True story:. Sergio Mendes heard Lani Hall singing in a Chicago coffee house one night. As soon as her break came, he went over and offered her a contract. She told him that he had to get her father's blessing. She was only 19, and the age of majority was then 21. For some reason, Daddy told her she was free to take it. Shortly afterwards, Brasil 66 got a recording contract with A&M Records, which was owned in part by Herb Alpert, who married Lani shortly afterwards. After 50+ years, they're still together!
Clark Weber, WLS radio program director and original DJ, was offered 1/2 of A&M records for 30000 dollars. Weber was very savy and knew they would hit it big. But, his contract with WLS forbade him from being in another business revolving around commercial music. So he had to decline. A&M was eventually sold for 60 Million years later. Last I heard Alpert was doing sculptures for 100k apiece.
Everytime I enjoy Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66, I am appreciative that I was here to experience their unique and exciting music. I'm so happy that I got to experience them in my lifetime. ❤
lani's voice goes right to my soul , fantasic ! its as if it must have took her many life spans working at her craft to become so great ! and sergio's piano , wow greatness !
Absolutely brilliant ... takes me right back to fond memories when I was a young woman, and the world was a kind, intelligent, wonderfully fun, beautiful place. Cheers very much indeed.
These girls are awesome singers and I haven't heard anything like it in my 66 years...I had 10-12 when I heard them and played drums along ...best music ever..Sergio is a genius.
@@timdippel7517 In fact Janis Hansen, who was a great singer, isn't even singing on the recording - this is from the first album and she didn't join the group until the album was already finished. I believe Bibi Vogel, her predecessor, left just as the recording was getting underway, and Lani Hall wound up doing all the vocals on it herself, including the double tracking. Janis sang on the Equinox and Look Around albums.
Lani Hall e Janis Hansen, ecco il simbolo perfetto di Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66! Nessun'altra accoppiata, negli anni, le ha eguagliate. Janis indimenticabile,un grande talento: riposi in pace
As a long time fan of this wonderful group (Equinox was one of the first albums I bought), my lips always sink each time I watch them lip syncing to their brilliant catalogue. Oh, and so do my ears. That is so not the sound of me applauding at the end. And break it to me gently if even the applause is canned.
@@pasqualemuzzupappa8596 Her full name is Leilani which could be Hawaiian Pacific Islander American, she is exotic looking and so beautiful. I have been a fan of this group since they released the first album and her husband and band TJ Brass They will always be part of my favorite catalog of music. I always thought Herb was Hispanic but he said in an interview that he is Jewish American. Just love them both.

Lani Hall ( next to the tambourine player ) lasted the longest. There was a mutiny on Sergio over hotel accommodations. He stayed in nice places, they ( rest of the band ) stayed in lesser places. He fired them all. Lani didn’t want to leave and got advice from Herb Alpert. He suggested she apologize and work out any problems she has. That’s what she did, and so it was her and Sergio with a new bunch of Brasil 66 folks. Janis Hansen was out and Karen Phillip was in. Karen left to work on her acting career and was cast as Lt. Dish on the first season of M*A*S*H. Later she played the girlfriend of coroner Quincy on the Jack Klugman lead show. Karen was also featured in Playboy magazine.
I think as owner of A&M Records he told (or lets put it nicely "convinced") Sergio to hire her back. If the owner of your record company tells you to do something, you do it
@@GeeBee909 If that were the case, then Janis, and the rest would have returned. According to Lani, in an interview with 60 minutes back in the day, she apologized to Sergio.
I think you are referring to Bibi. Lani left because she was to marry Herb. They had the story of it all on PBS. (and we remember some of what happened back in the day) but they never really talked about the other female singers on that show except Sergio's wife.
@@LAwoman1956 Nope, I'm referring to Lani. Sergio fired them all (including Lani) BEFORE Lani and Herb were an item. In fact Herb didn't really know Lani well at the time of the firing. They became "an item" during and after the success of Brasil 66. Yes, it's true Lani LATER left the group to marry Herb, BUT that was later. The late Janis Hansen explains it all in the liner notes of that Carnival CD they released. She was one of the ones who was fired, so she had first hand information. I believe Bibi left and returned to Brazil.
@@MarineCorpsSergeantTollens Sorry, I must disagree with you. The rest of the group would not have returned, BECAUSE Herb apparently only showed "interest" in Lani (plus he liked her singing voice). You noticed later on they got married??? Clearly, he liked HER (for several different reasons). There are a million bands out there who have broken up when a record company shows interest in only ONE member (usually the lead singer) and not the rest of the group. I know one group that I read about where the record company told the lead singer straight up "we only want to sign you, not the rest of the band". Clearly, they saw potential in Lani and apparently not the other members of the group. Did you notice that when the Mickey Mouse Club broke up that Walt Disney only kept Annette on the payrole and fired everyone else???? This is exactly what I am talking about. Companies pick and choose who they want. That is how business works, fair or unfair.
Lani and Janis’ voices are so close, delightful high pitches. After Sergio fired everyone, shortly after this, Herb Alpert recommended he rehire only Lani. This is version 66.1, then 66.2, then Lani left and it became 66.3. They were never as good again as the two female singers had lower pitched voices.
