The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Back in the day, this was music the kids and parents could agree upon. Many a party thrown by the adults for the families had Herb Alpert & TJB playing in the background. Instantly brings back memories of good food, good company and good music.

Yes. My Dad bought all his albums and was pretty much the only music we could all enjoy. He couldn’t relate to Rolling Stones, let alone Pink Floyd. And can’t tell you how many hours I spent as 13 yr old trying to see thru the whipped cream and cotton on cover of Whipped Cream album...:)
I never wanted to listen to the music my parents liked. And, thankfully, they hated it when I blasted the Sex Pistols and Clash.

I'm from Tijuana. I am so proud that Herb Alpert decided to name his band The Tijuana Brass. This video has just reached 1 million views. It just goes to show not only the importance of Herb Alpert as an artist, but also of The Ed Sullivan Show as an archive of unique and historical performances.
Maybe you can convince more of your fellow countrymen to stay there. Or is Mexico really that big of a sh*t hole?

Grew up in Imperial Beach, used to go to the Bull fights with my parents when my father was not on a tour in the Navy. Grew up listening to Herb, great memories of both Herb and Tijuana. In the late 60's and all during the 70's, it was an awesome place to grow up and hang out. IB, Pacific Beach, just great times and memories...
In the 60s everyone was doing their own thing. Musically, culturally, fashionably and classily. Real classics 😎💎❇️🫶🏿
Unlike so many shows, Sullivan had real live performances, not lip syncing to a track. If you are familiar with the original records, you can tell this is a unique performance.
Yep. I could tell right from the beginning that this was live. I saw they had mics and was hopeful, but that in and of itself doesn't always mean it'll be live. Came here from a different video that was very obviously canned. You could see him taking breaths and relaxing his embouchure during held notes. He even gave a very faint smile at one point during a phrase, as though he was amused by it all.
Russian and Romanian Jew. I always thought he was Latin.
There is one video on TH-cam where it's plainly obvious Herb is lip synching. Another thing I learned a long time ago is these guys in this video did not play on the studio recordings. A session group called the "Wrecking Crew" played on all of the recordings. The gentlemen here did the tour stuff.

Talk about exposure to all different styles of music, we boomers experienced it all. My father was a musician and he loved Herb Alpert. I was taking piano lessons when this song hit the charts and my Dad bought me the sheet music for A Taste of Honey. I immediately learned it and could play it from memory. I loved This Guy’s in Love With You and learned to play the many Burt Bacharach songs . We were truly the lucky ones.
Yeah, I'm 62. My Dad would bring me to Drum Corps competitions every summer. It opened my eyes to how dedicated and eager musicians were. And every kid on the block was learning an instrument, or in a garage band. Great times!

Yup. He had to record a track and didn't have enough cash to pay the musicians scale. They did it anyway and then after it was a hit he paid them back what he owed them.

What's really important, especially for today's generation, is that back during those years, nearly every singer, pop/rock group, and/or instrumental band would perform their "hits" by syncing to their pre-recorded versions. This, my friends, was performed LIVE! They were that good!!!!!!
Another commenter said the lip-synch factor depended on where the bands were playing. Some TV shows were done in studios that had inferior acoustics, so the bands were advised (or required) to lip-synch. The Ed Sullivan studio had excellent acoustics, so everyone played "live" there.
Just wondering if you noticed that the electric guitars were not plugged in. Must of had wireless technology back then. It's prerecorded played in the studio and editing for camera angles

@@tabletopwarrior No way are those trumpets mimicking to the record....I've been a trumpet player and music teacher all of my life. The guitar players both have wire hanging from them if you look more closely...it appears the amplifiers are hidden and probably mic'd. They are all playing live in that band.

Ed Sullivan had all the greats and we'd watch him every week. Glad they are re-releasing them.
Alpert is the only artist to have both pop song and an instrumental number #1 hits at the same time.
Mr. A, Herb Alpert who would go on to start A&M RECORDS HOLLYWOOD in the old Charlie Chaplin building on LaBrea Blvd. with Mr. M , Jerry Moss.Thus began A&M RECORDS in 1962 and my Uncle was employed there from 1969-1999.
" The Carpenters were signed by A&M in 1969" ...and the musicians/singers A&M would sign would make Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss very wealthy, along with their talents on their record label.
I'm so grateful during the Summers spent with my Uncle and Aunt, I got to roam the studios 🎙 and meet a lot of great entertainers.blessed!
Hey Rhonda you're right about Herb co-founding the label with Jerry Moss but they did so in 1962! Starting with the Top 10 hit "The Lonely Bull" that year.

A&M was one fine record company...from giving garage bands a shot in the 60s to bringing over tons of great UK talent in the Island Records deal...and for one hot minute had The Sex Pistols, go figure (tho all that came out of it was one highly collectible 45). Not to mention bringing one of my favorite bands to the rest of the world, Japan's Yellow Magic Orchestra.

I’m pretty sure Herb just put out a new album (in 2023) - which is 58 years after this performance! And he’s sounding just as good today! Bravo sir!

The Tijuana Brass was a band that performed major chord, harmonious "pop" music. It was the "Swing" of their generation. They were jazzy, harmonious, unique in their genre, and cool. There was a uniqueness to their jazzy instrumental ballads that few Latin-tinged bands could mimic. I think nearly every song they performed came to be in the top twenty. Their crispness was sharp and always on the keys. I liked everything they did. Why they disappeared so quickly was disappointing to me. I'm nearing my eighth decade and I still run the LONELY BULL thru my mind.

My Mom was a member of the Columbia Record Club. I was ten years old in 1965 when "Whipped Cream" came out which my Mom bought. It still am a bit shocked when I see the cover...

We had a Buick Electra with an 8 track player. We were livin' the high life, lol. Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass was one of our favorite travel tapes.
Mom jad also bought Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band because she'd heard The Beatles "Michelle" and figured it would be music like that. It wasn't, but us kids loved it.
Mom and dad were classical, opera, "jazz" (like Nat King Cole) and musical theater musicians, so any "modern" or "contemporary" music was a sweet treat.
Herb Alpert was something we all could agree on and enjoy.

I still pass by, to this day , Herb Alpert's formerly owned A&M recording studios on LaBrea Blvd here in Hollywood, Ca on my way to work at Warner Bros.Television. I had many of his 45 singles and his Greatest Hits.
The old Chaplin studio bought by Charlie in 1917 and owned by him until 1953.
In his autobiography -
“At the end of the Mutual contract, I was anxious to get started with First National, but we had no studio. I decided to buy land in Hollywood and build one. The site was the corner of Sunset and La Brea and had a very fine ten-room house and five acres of lemon, orange and peach trees. We built a perfect unit, complete with developing plant, cutting room, and offices.”

I passed by "Terrytoons" cartoon studio that produced "Mighty Mouse" on my way to junior HS. I never knew what it was until I reached adulthood.

Definitely iconic; it seemed a bit risque at the time. As a kid, I remember looking at it and wondering how much whipped cream it took to cover her. 😂
I grew up on this kind of music, born in 1969. I couldn’t be more grateful to my mother for exposing me to music from the roaring 20’s, big band, jazz, Sinatra, the 60’’s, all through the 70’s and I took it from there on. Both of her brothers were huge music fans, and her youngest had to be the biggest Beatles fan in the family.
I learned so much, and listened to WLS / WCFL with Larry Lujack that I wanted to be a DJ when I grew up, but that didn’t happen. Herb Alpert will always have a special place in my heart. Such talent, and an eye for new talent as well. Thanks for your phenomenal trumpet ability, and your philanthropy! 🎶🎺🎶

My Dad loved Herb Alpert and the TJ brass and had every album they made in the 60s. He would come home from work and relax listening to one of their records playing on a big cabinet stereo system in the livingroom before dinner.
It wasnt until I was an Adult that I found out that Herb Alpert was Jewish and the TJ brass members were mostly Italian Americans , I thought they were Spanish - Mexican and they sold that image pretty well

"A Taste of Honey" was a 1958 British play. Americans Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow wrote this instrumental theme for the 1960 Broadway version. The song won a Grammy Award. Lyrics were not added to "Taste of Honey" until 1961. There were some minor hits and even a cover by the Beatles. The catchy melody also found it's way into the acts of many club performers, but the big hit for the song didn't come until this version in 1965. A single from their "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" album.
Herb Alpert arranged the song with a long intro, but even an elite crew of studio musicians had trouble starting precisely on time. Finally, drummer Hal Blaine suggested that he just count it off and then they take that part of his track out of the final mix. However, when the producer listened to the playback, he called Alpert over to hear it and they kept the Boom-Boom Boom-Boom in the arrangement. Blaine's count-off remains a signature for the song, even today.

That is Nick Ceroli here, not Hal Blaine. Blaine played on the studio version.

I am a kid again in the 60's listing to my Dad's music on our record player, Dad love Herb Alpert. I played Dad some of his music 🎶 the night before he died. This music will always bring a tear to my eyes. safe travels 🙏 💕 Dad, see you at Saint Peter's Gate.

I saw this on the Ed Sullivan Show in the 1960s. So much great bands and music firsts on the Ed Sullivan Show since the early 1960s. The Sunday night Ed Sullivan Show was the entertainment highlight of the TV week. Ed Sullivan had Elvis, the Beatles, Doors, Jacksons, Supremes, endless great groups on his show.
My grandmother had so many of his albums... And we all loved his music even though we otherwise had different musical tastes.
There is so much good music in the world - rock, folk, country, alternative, classical, jazz…
Certain music carries me back to a time and place. Listening to this reminds me of a happy time when I and the world were still young. Brings back memories of happy times with family and friends around the swimming pool on warm summer nights. I loved them then and still love them now. Thanks for sharing. 💕

Yes, Mr. Alpert discovered and signed the phenomenal Karen and Richard Carpenter and also the great Sergio Mendes for A&M Records. I still play all their fabulous records/cds today as I drive along the beautiful New Jersey shore.

My Mom was the one who introduced me to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. All these comments that I read here, I believe that I am in agreement with them all. It's just excellent music. Mom got a kick out of the horn on the taxi song. She's gone now, at 95, 4 years ago. That alone says something about Herb's music.

Oh, the memories. Herb Alpert was a boyhood hero of mine, and I think it was in 1966 my father took me to see him live at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. Looks like the same lineup of musicians. I played trumpet and by the time I was 12 I think I had half the TJB book memorized, all of the greatest hits. It was cool that a trumpet player was topping the charts, 'cuz I was a trumpet player.
We had a trumpet player in the family, and I always loved hearing him play those songs. There was a Tijuana Brass cover band in my town (circa 1968) called the Border Patrol that played in local clubs. I would have loved to see TJB live.
This was the "heaviest metal" music in my parents' album collection. Brings back amazing memories of lying on top of the stereo cabinet, listening to this and Tom Jones, the Ray Coniff Sungers. Thank you for this!

This Tijuana Brass version of A Taste of Honey was my favorite pop song when I was 10. I’d hear it in the morning on radio and it not only stirred my energy for school, it inspired me with its magic sound. Thanks, Herb, for all those great mornings

A classic from "Whip Cream and Other Delights". I remember my neighbors used to try to hide the record from me and their 12 year old son. We always managed to find it 😁. There's a utube interview out there somewhere with Herp and Lou Adler talking about the music 🎵 and the album cover👌. There's also an interview with Hal Blaine (rip) talking about his classic drum intro.

Who was that lovely and decidedly zaftig young woman on that album cover? She reminded me of the beautiful Nova in “Planet of the Apes.”
When we were kids (the 60's) my older brother played the trumpet and this song was on his playlist. Great song, great memories.

Man, America was so much better back then. I really miss those days growing up as a kid with my mom and dad.
I come from a small town in Texas and in those days all of the local businesses were people that grew up and went to school together and then hung out and had parties together.
Absolutely love Herb Alpert & the TJB! Mom used to play all of the vinyl LP's back in the day, cranked up on her little phonograph. She told me I was always movin' and be-boppin' whenever I heard this one! 😀👍🇺🇸
Herb Alpert and the Brass were the first albums I bought as a young teen and I still enjoy them 50 + years later.

I was 6 years old when this song became popular. But this song was everywhere! Herb Alpert is a really big deal. It wasn't music I listened to but you couldn't avoid this song once it exploded, Everyone covered it. And Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss formed the company that turned into A&M records. Alpert & Moss (so now you know what the initials mean). Yeah, he is a big deal. But not just this song either. Just about everything you heard with a horn in it back then was Herb Alpert. His music was show themes and commercials and in movies. Until now, I really hadn't realized the extent of his influence.
No auto tune, reverb, tapes...just pure music.

I think most people think of this group as 60s kitsch-pop elevator music. As a brass player myself and a music teacher of some 34 years I marvel at how tasteful and musically they played as an ensemble. So technically sound and tight with their rhythmic feel. They swing. Superb intonation and tone. 2 trumpets, 1 tbone, and a rhythm section. No distracting stage choreography. Just simply elegant and superb in their stylistic interpretation. Timeless.

I miss her but when I hear the music it takes me back to my teen years & how simple life was & how much fun we had making up dance routines. Thanks for those cherished treasures.❤😊🎉
I was six when this came out - I remember my mom & dad having the album - they also had THE LONELY BULL album (still one of my favorites). I wore their records out, playing them so much! Fantastic stuff! Did you know that Herb Alpert was the one who discovered the Carpenters? Originally, Karen Carpenter only wanted to play the drums. They played one of their songs for Herb Alpert, and he asked her to try singing it in a lower octave. The rest is history.

When I was a kid, the radio played all of the hits. So everyone heard Herb Alpert, Jim Morrison, basicay whomever was a hit at the time. How wonderful it was. It introduced us to all types of music.

My parents had their albums. I remember hearing these songs on the record player.
Those who follow the album charts know the significance of this recording. It launched one of the most impressive album chart runs as the album, "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" would peak at #1 and achieve the #1 status into 1966. The Beatles and Herb Alpert had a fierce battle on the album chart in 1966 where each act had three #1 albums during that calendar year..
