In one of the "Yesterday Today Tribute" videos, they show a BW photo, taken in 1963 or 1964, of a woman who is said to be "the girl from Ipanema." I'm pretty sure the woman in the photo is not the woman shown singing in this video, but I'm going to search for the photo. I must know if maybe it is the same woman! A woman who is that beautiful can change her appearance quite a bit with a change of hairstyle and a little makeup.

Me too - I suppose it was at the peak of my vinyl-buying phase in the '60s. I've got a lot of Astrud's recordings as well as Stan's. It sparked an enduring love of Brazilian music, now carried in for me by Eliane Elias. I'm twice your age and it still enjoyable!

No one has ever been so enchanting singing that song. Her seeming a little shy just amplifies her charm. (And it doesn't hurt that she was a sweet, warm voice with perfect pitch and phrasing.) The words depict a 2nd person narration, but nobody but nobody could BE the girl from Ipanema more than Astrud Gilberto. She embodies that girl by the way she walks and holds herself and sings - all the mannerisms you'd expect in that girl on the beach. Astrud certainly makes me go ahhhh....
Her voice is so complementary to the sax and vice versa. Im always fascinated about the shape of the structure of a singers nose and mouth and throat when they have a unique instrumental sound in their vocals, shes a human clarinet. Beautiful voice!!!!!!!

mr. straw blessings to Cherub for giving us the beautiful timeless lyrics to this lovely classic. I send this to my new Honey. She is of Latin descent and every word and melody fits her. She is Gorgeous!😍
RIP Astrud Gilberto. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen. I thank God that Astrud leaves behind her recordings so that I can continue to enjoy her vocal stylings.
She was such a lovely person. Her artistry has been one of it's kind. Do y'all know she wasn't paid anything for this song? Also, Stan Getz abused her and underpaid her while being on tour with him. And she became a global sensation thereafter. Will miss her! Rip Astrud 💔
While Helô inspired the song, it was another Carioca who carried it beyond Rio. Astrud Gilberto was the wife of singing star João Gilberto when she entered an NYC studio in March 1963. João and Jobim were making a record with tenor saxman Stan Getz. The idea of cutting a verse on “Ipanema” in English came up, and Astrud was the only one of the Brazilians who spoke more than phrasebook English. Astrud’s child-like vocal, devoid of vibrato and singerly mannerisms, was the perfect foil for her husband’s soft bumblebee voice. Jobim tinkled piano. Getz blew a creamy smooth tenor. Four minutes of magic went to tape. A year later, the song was casting its quiet spell of sea and sand on the charts, washing past the Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand.” It peaked in mid-June at No. 5, selling over two million copies. “The Girl From Ipanema” went on to become the second-most recorded popular song in history, behind “Yesterday.” Covered by an A-Z gamut of performers.
*Only the 'Beatles' knocked down' the 'Beatles'...in 1964, they out-sold every recording artist(s) COMBINED!* *At one point, they held the 'Top 3' charting positions according to 'BillBoard' with three different tunes taking turns at the '#1' position* (Am I discrediting your 'Comment?' No, but to give the impression that "Ipanema' somehow eclipsed "I Want To Hold Your Hand" is pure fantasy)
@@gerrynightingale9045 You missed the point. Bossa Nova preceded The Beatles And also totally different sound of music from a totally different area of the world. And it was all in Portuguese originally.
@@machtschnell7452 *Okay, 'Rapid Fast' or whomever* *I wrote nothing that wasn't true, and never stated the 'Beatles created the 'Bossa Nova' nor the 'back-beat patterns'...so what is YOUR 'Point?'* ( *I don't care WHERE it originated from, including Mars, because it's completely immaterial with respect to the 'point made by someone else that the song 'eclipsed sales' from the Beatles, and it DID NOT* ) *You just wanted to 'piss on my comment' and you've FAILED*
@@euumapessoa5427 I respectfully disagree. The best singer for this song was Astrud's ex-husband, João Gilberto, sitting by himself on a simple chair, singing and playing his acoustic guitar. He was able to use his voice and the guitar's sound in a way that the listener wouldn't be able to distinguish between the sound of the instrument from that of his human voice. Tom Jobim was the composer and interpreter of that. He wrote it jointly with his friend, the poet and diplomat Vinicius de Moraes.
I started listening to this song around last year, and it became one of my favorites, it's so comforting that it makes me think "I don't want to leave here", it somehow conveys that something.

This song gave me comfort as a child being passed from foster parent to foster parent. I heard it on the car radio, I had to be like five or six. Her voice and the smoothness of the song really lifted my mood. RIP.
I love Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Buffalo Springfield, The Band...but this takes me back to the 60's perhaps more than anything else...it baffles me that there are some that don't like this. It also makes me long for ballads that had a starring role for the sax (in this case the incomparable Stan Getz).
*Ray Manzarek and Morrison were both 'Cool Jazz' and Sinatra fans, as well as 'Klezmer' and 'Three-Penny Opera'-type music and German 'Sturm und Drang' tunes from the 20's and '30's* ( *Morrison considered the 'Doors' tunes as 'Operatic' rather than 'Pop' and more 'Wagner' than 'Beatles'..."I like songs to tell a story, to mean something than just melody and instruments...I like making people think about what they're hearing from us, whatever it means to them"* )
In the mid 60s we would stayed at my grandmother's for the summer in the Va. mountains. I woke up listening to this as my uncle in the next room who was home from the Air force on leave would be playing this song down low and the whole album on his record player. Imagine a cool breeze coming through the window, birds chirping and a rooster crowing in the distance with this playing.

Just a pure, untrained voice. No pretention or unnecessary frills. The perfect voice for a song about a pretty, natural girl walking by the seashore .

She was such a lovely person. Her artistry has been one of it's kind. Do y'all know she wasn't paid anything for this song?
Also, Stan Getz abused her and underpaid her while being on tour with him.
And she became a global sensation thereafter.

She was paid ...120 bucks !!! .... WHOOPEE !!! .
Great insight. Thank you!
*Only the 'Beatles' knocked down' the 'Beatles'...in 1964, they out-sold every recording artist(s) COMBINED!*
*At one point, they held the 'Top 3' charting positions according to 'BillBoard' with three different tunes taking turns at the '#1' position*
(Am I discrediting your 'Comment?' No, but to give the impression that "Ipanema'
somehow eclipsed "I Want To Hold Your Hand" is pure fantasy)

Its is a brazilian song, and the best singer of that is Tom jobim, look up there
One of the most covered songs in history. The good singers all sang it well. The beauty of the song is its utter simplicity.
Sarah Vaughan.

*Ray Manzarek and Morrison were both 'Cool Jazz' and Sinatra fans, as well as
'Klezmer' and 'Three-Penny Opera'-type music and German 'Sturm und Drang' tunes from the 20's and '30's*
( *Morrison considered the 'Doors' tunes as 'Operatic' rather than 'Pop' and more
'Wagner' than 'Beatles'..."I like songs to tell a story, to mean something than just melody and instruments...I like making people think about what they're hearing from us, whatever it means to them"* )
Bosa Nova days. And my wife and I saw Jimi at Woodstock in 1969...after we got married in March.
