HUGE upset in the Arc! Torquator Tasso wins Europe's richest race for Germany at 80/1!

- Torquator Tasso gave Germany a third victory in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as he caused a seismic 80-1 upset in the ParisLongchamp showpiece.
The Marcel Weiss-trained colt pounced late in the hands of Rene Piechulek to emulate compatriots Danedream in 2011 and Star Appeal in 1975.
Torquator Tasso got up close home to score from Dermot Weld’s Tarnawa and the Charlie Appleby-trained Hurricane Lane, whose stablemate Adayar was fourth after leading for much of the way.
Mojo Star and Hurricane Lane broke well from their inside draws, but William Buck soon hit the front on the free-running Adayar.
The Derby and King George hero entered the straight a few lengths to the good, but he tired in the final furlong. Tarnawa and Hurricane Lane came on strong towards the inside - but Torquator Tasso was the last to challenge and nabbed the pair in the dying strides.

That was THE ground for Torquator Tasso! He is a very good Group 1 racehorse otherwise, but childs of Adlerflug excels on soft or heavy turf. My family and I have been following this horse since the German Derby last year and of course we bet on him😍. I hope he will follow Adlerflug and be a super breeding stallion to pass on this stamina. Child of Adlerflug always starting to fly in the last 200-300m, last year In Swoop almost won the Arc (also a child of Adlerflug) if the race would have been only 100m longer.

Must have been underestimated. I have never heard of him.
@@countbelalucozade last years runner up „In Swoop“ was also a progeny of Adlerflug. Adlerflug only started to get international recognition this year, but sadly passed away this spring.

Great horses are so easily overlooked because people focus on Irish/GB/French/Australian/US and Japanese horses too much. If you look at this horses breeding and race times over distance/ground it was a real contender. Great Champion, brilliant ride by Jockey. #German #Arc
It’s never raced outside Germany so hard for people to get behind.
Irish bred horses win a huge percentage of races all over the world but especially in the UK and that’s probably why people focus on them too.

Take nothing away from the winner, but I am GUTTED for Tarnawa, won and contested at the highest level on every ground going, absolute superstar mare in my eyes.

The winner was positioned perfectly the whole race

I remember the last German winner in 1975, ridden by Greville Starkey and winning at 120/1, Star Appeal. He burst out of the pack to win, a bit like this horse.

Me neither. It leaves the taste of whiny loosers, who just can't accept that their star couldn't win against an outsider on my tongue. If René would have ridden TT in a way that would have distributed the other horses and made it impossible for them to go past him on purpose or used the whip more times than allowed I'd understand it. But none of such things happened and so the only thing left to say is "sometimes unexpected miracles come true and that's the magic of any sport and even life itself. Get over it."

Strange tactics from the boys in blue I thought.
Adayar has never front run in any of it's races - seems to prefer getting a bit of cover and stretching from 2 furlongs out. Buick obviously goes for home far too soon here.
Hurricane Lane should have been up closer to the pace and has to use a lot of petrol just to get in the race - every time I have seen it run it's always been on the wide outside, never seen it in between horses like that.

David, I haven't a clue what Buick was thinking to be honest. OK, he was slightly hamstrung in the fact that Adayar broke too well from the stalls whereas Deep Bond completely missed the break. Broome did get out in front and was supposed to make a decent pace, however Yutaka Take was useless as usual. I don't know how for the life of me, he is so popular in Japan? I have never liked, nor rated him as a jockey. I can still remember the almighty cock-up he produced on White Muzzle in an Arc many years ago. In a sense, Buick had no option but to lead. Where he did go wrong however, was to kick for home that soon. He would have been better off going at the same rhythm till the last 250/275 metres. Even if a couple of horses went past him, he could have pulled out to the outside and then kicked on. Would have had better chance. And yes, I am partly talking through my (much emptier) wallet.
Adayar and Buick were forced to hit the front after the 1st 4 F , the 2 front runners did not set up a decent pace , very messy and really , Aidan should of advised the jockey on Broome to burn up a bit more in front , was never gonna be good enough to get placed anyhow . Would of helped Snowfall , Tarnawa , Hurricane Lane and Adayar much more , as these were the best classy horses in the Arc. But fair play to the winner .

Why lead in a 12 furlong race on soft ground? I don't get it.
Sunday's racing began at Tipperary and one runner fell at the last as Purple Mountain took control and won one of the Graded races on the card. Saldier and Gin Lime were the other two winners. So to Longchamp for a top quality card. Zellie took the Marcel Boussac under Oisin Murphy who had high hopes with Chrono Genesis in the Arc De Triomphe. Frankie Dettori guided Angel Bleu to pip the Goldophin runner, Noble Truth in the Lagardere. So to the Arc De Triomphe featuring Adayar, Hurricane Lane, Snowfall, et al. It went to Germany, Torquator Tasso, 80-1. Massive upset. It is like Mon Mome winning the Grand National. Sent shivers down punters spine. Ouch.

Great ride, great race. Jockey had best position throughout, but all credit to the horse. this was a class group one, and the horse was going away , at the line.
I don't think longchamp drains as well as it used to before the refurbishment . But in saying that you could say the same about Ascot that gets heavier than it did before there refurbishment in 2005.
Looks like the ground was better further from the rail on the final straight. But deffo a race for stayers.

Winner won after getting perfect trip on better ground. The real winner for me was Taranawa stuck on inside heavy ground all the way. His effort from way back on ground that didn't suit was exceptional. Taranawa was best horse in race and clearly now number 2 horse in world after St Marks Basilica.

This was the best Arc I have ever seen, so competitive and the winner was just outstanding. German racing snubbed once again as being inferior. Surprise!

The the greatest Arc was when the British horse Dancing Brave won it in 1986.
Some of the commentators mentioned that he was a lighter framed horse and that helped him cover the heavy ground. Regardless, it was a great race! I was up at 6 AM MT to watch all 4 races that were on TV and they were all great!
Glad I enjoyed it. The Arc is the best flat race in Europe this horse just loved the ground and surprised everyone.

Winner won it well but can't help feeling that Tarnawa probably would of won with a more troublefree ride. She got a little blocked coming from the bend into the straight, and even when had daylight, used up ground to switch to the rail. Preety sure she was closing faster than anything else.

Matt I feel your pain. I think some of the regular French based jockeys were horrendous this week. Soumillion wasted a good draw here, I think Colin Keane would have done better. Barzalona was made to looks like an utter clown today on Audariya and yesterday Peslier got the Revenant beaten when it should have won well. A few times Doyle and Frankie schooled them yesterday.
My only thought was for a couple of seconds Tarnawa was hitting a flat spot ir maybe would have liked it slightly less heavy but I think she should have won 🏆

How am I being a sore loser? I clearly stated that the winner won well. I just personally believe that Tarnawa did not get to run to her best, was blocked off, and lost ground switching to the rail. You could also say that Hurricane Lane had trouble in running too.
I have news for you…the best horse doesn’t always win. The winner got a clear run on the outside, exploited the better ground and also stayed away from traffic. I am not denying that it won, I am simply saying that another horse probably would of if given a better setup.
It’s not ifs and buts. Tarnawa was blocked off and the jockey probably shouldn’t of switched her to the rail, thus losing ground. If that doesn’t happen, she wins.

The Oaks winning distance flattered her, but she is a good horse - not a great horse. She ran well in The Arc, but the heavy ground didn't help her or many of the others.

Sophia, I think what has confused you is the fact that he has number 1 on his saddlecloth. However, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is NOT a handicap. Therefore, he and all the other 4 and 5 year old horses carried the same weight (apart from the female ones of course).

Well, if it wasn't for the high odds psychologically putting punters off for win purpose, on paper you would have given her some sort of chance. A horse that has hardly been out of frame in big races forgiving one of her races, the odds were bit disgraceful to her talent.
My win selections eventually was Hurricane Lane over Tarnava, however with extra places, my EW selections 1. Sealiway 2. Torquator Tasso. , but for win purpose on form Hurricane Lane certainly had the slight nod over Tarnava... and by far against others.
On the day it was a very good positional ride from Rene Piechulek on a horse that was underestimated by most. I think jockey himself didn't expect the win. Almost like a fairy tale story.. well deserved Congratulations to Torquator Tasso and all her connections!
You're right about the last part. In a video in German TT's trainer said that he doesn't think they'll make a fool out of themselves, but they have to go into this race with realistic expectations.
@@yami-no-kami3586 Took me ages to land a selection on this meeting. In general, like most, i would concentrate on the principles in the market for win purpose and ignore outsiders in most cases basing it on reputation and odds. This is not always wise, but does save time, however I do have a quick glance at outsiders form especially in big meetings. After long and thorough form reviewing between the principles, i narrowed down to two of them, going back and forth between Hurricane Lane and Tarnawa. Though Adayar beat Hurricane Lane, was the only race he lost with excuse on the day.. plus he seems better than Adayar on soft ground.. but Tarnawa form looked a close match.. but was very hard to split them, but with 3lb weight allowance and overall form, very narrowly landed on Hurricane Lane.
Ruling out the obvious ones, I went through several previous racing clips of few horses in this field which also included Torquator Tasso. Since online firms were paying on 5 places, at the odds i thought Sealiway was value for a place chance who was not beaten far by the talented horse St Mark's Basilica (recently retired) as Tarnawa was second to..though at different trips. Torquator Tasso was another i thought had place value (at the time 66/1) who recently beat a horse called Passion and Glory, who beat a good horse on his day called Euchen Glen in a Group 3 race.. and few other factors based on seeing her previous races.
Did I expect her to win? Not really, but i certainly thought had the talent to be in the frame.
This was my eventual punt.
*Hurricane Lane to win
*Hurricane Lane x Tarnawa reverse forecast as well as extra on straight forecast
Sealiway and Torquator Tasso Each way (place) at smaller stake.
At times no matter how much time you spend on studying and reviewing form, its always how the races pan out on the day, plus we all can easily underestimate potential talents.

Yeah, underestimating a horse for whatever reason is fairly easy, but that doesn't mean these horses can't perform miracles and honestly those are the most beautiful victories. And there're a lot of horses who proved that even underestimated outsiders can be champions. I mean, Kincsem, the most successful racehorse, ever is a prime example of this. No one wanted to have her because of her average and ugly appearance and even her own trainer didn't think highly of her before she began her career and beat some of the biggest names of her time. Today, approx. 150 years later, her record still stands.

Adayar was the pacemaker then.
He shouldn't have been. It should have been Deep Bond (who missed the break), or Broome, who did get out in front, but was ridden by a very useless Yutaka Take who just doesn't have a clue.
@@jameshopkins3059 cant disagree with any of that. He just set it up for the three behind. Hes a nice horse but trying to make all in that ground was not the best decision.
i tell u he ran one hell of a race he was in business all through as Buick blew up Adayar coming in to the final run.
But it was Tarnawa along the rails with that champ christoffe and Doyle who timed their runs to perfection.
But it was this long shot TT who was simply special as he went past Tarnawa and Hurricane Lane leaving them to fight for the placings.
The Arc 21 was simply special the more I follow this wonderful sport and European Racing i simply love it.

@@maxryder6649 you’re talking about horses trained in Germany. But Germany has bred several winners in the last decade or two: Danedream, Waldgeist, Hurricane Run… and going back to the Schlenderhan mares, Galileo & Sea the stars wouldn’t exist without their broadmare line. Perhaps not the best breeding in the world but definitely up there for the small amount of progeny each year

James Doyle made a rip roaring arse of his ride. Hurricane lane should have pissed that.
I know it's in hindsight but the result makes sense now....Adayar missed prep race, Hurricane Lane not the best in training will GENERALLY find one better at top top level, Tarnnawa ground all wrong wasnt gonna stay, mojo star not classy enough, Snowfall always gonna find two too good at top top level.....so who does that leave that's won at a top level? Chrono Genesis ground always wrong...Broome not top class......So that basically leaves Deep Bond and Toquarto Tasso and Rabibah and Sealaway. So you basically had 4 horses to choose from who realistically had a chance in an Arc that was always going to throw up a winner that was an outsider... We (nearly) all always predict these big races with our heart and dream of superstar champions winning and don't look at the hard facts of the race on that particular day in those conditions. Congrats to German team but I feel disappointed the last couple of Arcs have been somewhat gone tothe best mile and a half horse in Europe....which this year I believe would have been Adayar, although he's no Montjeu.

I've watched enough Arc races on my phone to know that only a super horse can stay on the rail throughout this race and be able to win. This horse stayed outside like Dancing Brave and won handsomely in the end. Really think Godolphin should get Frankie back in the camp. Buick and Doyle together are not half as good as Mr Magnificent 7.
