Chapter 29: A year has gone by. Little Arthur is now a year old and has a sweet temperament. Helen worries she is apt to spoil him. Her relationship with her husband is not good, though. She feels they have reached new lows. She feels it should only get better, or stay the same from here on. Arthur decides to go to London but won't allow Helen to come along because she will bring the child. He stays away for an excessively long time. He writes fewer letters than before, and the correspondence is terse.
Walter Hargraves, her nearest neighbor's son comes to see her one day when she and her son and Rachel are outdoors. He tells Helen he has seen Arthur in London. He intimates Arthur is up to no good. Helen gets defensive and says she doesn't want to hear it from a "stranger". Walter is hurt and asks if they could please be friends. Helen relents a little, but has suspicions about him nonetheless.
Walter finds Helen and little Arthur alone in the park one day and approaches them, bewitched by the beaty of them both. He says to Helen, much to her surprise, that Arthur is coming home from London this coming week. Helen wasn't aware of it. When Walter avers that he had always fixed that date for his return, Helen realizes that Arthur had been lying to her all along in saying he'd be home soon and that he wasn't sure when it would be.
