The Tenant of Wildfell Hall Chap 30 Domestic Scenes

Arthur finally comes home and he is wasted and sick. He doesn't eat any food. He drinks alcohol. He sits at the meal table and says the food is horrible and will make him ill. He says abusive things about the servants. When the butler, trying his best to hurry out of the dining room, trips on the carpet, Arthur berates him severely and Helen can't stand it. She kindly excuses the butler and Arthur complains she took the butler's side over her own husband. It turns out Arthur really is sick. He gets angry when Helen spends time with her little boy who gets sick, himself. Her husband wants all her attention to himself.
Helen wonders if she is becoming inured to the shocking speech and habits of her husband. Also, Walter Hargraves is becoming a frequent visitor to the house. Helen appreciates his intervention because he is a good influence on Arthur. Hargraves is happy to confide in Helen about matters of her husband, but Helen is on her guard. Walter is a little cloying in his ways, and seems to want to be too close a friend and confidante to her.
At the end of the chapter, Helen and her baby go to visit her elderly uncle and aunt. She is so happy to be back in her childhood home, but her happiness is mixed with pain in how she now realizes her aunt had been right about Arthur. He aunt can see through her happy talk of her life. Her aunt seems sad and Helen feels like she has disappointed her. She leaves after a short visit. When she gets home, she is happy to find that Arthur is in better spirits and healthier. He has been on a hunting trip to Scotland, which seems to have done him much good.
