When I worked as a history teacher in high school, I used to play Sabaton often and we had large historic battle presentations using Warhammer fantasy miniatures during classes. Really helped making my class popular

Honestly, as a high school student myself, anything like that will get kids into history. Make it fun, make it interactive and high energy. The glorious rise and bitter fall of empires, the coming of new eras, the brutality of battles etc, you have to actually set in the reality of the fact that they are learning history. They are learning the world and the reality people just like them have faced in the past.

    • @kumich5
      @kumich5 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

@@isaiahwelch8066 Yes, sure. The games are not the point, since we did not play Warhammer. I just used miniatures to visually depict historic battles. When I taught WW2 I used tank models I collected and painted from various manufacturers in combination with Warhammer Empire handguners and Dwarf thunderers since those are the only miniatures I have with guns... Tabletop games and miniatures are irrelevant, anything can be used

@@sayaphantom6385 Thank you very much. It means a lot. I have always loved history, but hated history classes, so I decided to do something different as a teacher. I created a completely new class called "Military history" where we learn about tactics, equipment, most important historic battles etc. When the topic was the Battle of Agincourt I dressed one student into my plate armor as a show piece to demonstrate how difficult it actually was to kill an armored opponent and the student had a chance to try holding various longswords, arming swords, maces etc. and draw 80 pound longbow so they would appreciate what those people went trough

"Crowned by God, not but the church, as my power is divine."
Carolus Rex basically bypassed the church and said that his power was given to him by God, making the church's power significantly smaller.

Mind this is less about the power of the Church per se than the fact that in Swedish Protestantism the King of Sweden was Gods representative on Earth basically the same as the Pope in Catholicism. Hence why he, King Karl, viewed himself as above all oaths to the church.

Many, many years ago, when Persia came ashore
Heeding Leonidas' call, the Spartans went to war
Joined by their brothers, a few against the fateful horde
      Hellenic hearts are set aflame,
The hot gate calls their name
A final stand, stop the Persians, spear in hand
Form a wall, live to fall, and live Forever
      Sparta! Hellas!
Then, and again, sing of three hundred men!
      Slaughter! Persians!
Glory and death, Spartans will never surrender!
Morning has broken, today they're fighting in the shade
When arrows blocked the sun, they fell,
      Tonight they dine in Hell
By traitor's hand, secret passage to their Land
Know his name, know his shame will last forever
      Sparta! Hellas!
Then, and again, sing of three hundred men!
      Slaughter! Persians!

Charles XII was a Swedish king who inherited the empire while he was still a teen. He quickly got involved in a war with Denmark, Poland and Russia, all of whom though he'd be an easy target. He went about to kick the rear end of all three of them repeatedly for a while. But he made the same mistake as Napoleon and Hitler; he went deep into Russia. That massive mistake ended up costing him his elite army, a leg injury and being stuck in Constantinople for a while. When he came back to Sweden, all his enemies returned for round 2 (including Poland and Denmark who had dropped out of the war)... This time, the king was not able to push them back and died when besieging a Norwegian fort/city... The Swedish empire would go on to loose most of its lands outside of Sweden per say as well as its status of regional power. Russia would go on to establish St-Petersburg on one of the territories gained from Sweden.
The battle of his defeat against the Russians on the fields of Poltava is also a Sabaton song from the same album. The song is titled "Poltava"

For anyone that will see this: This song shows why he's considered one of Sweden's greatest kings, aswell as one of the kings with the worst case of hubris.
King Charles XII of Sweden (Karl XII) was put on the throne at an age of 15. People thought he wouldn't last long, that he was just a boy. Early on he bypassed the church and said he was crowned by God, making him hold the most power in the land, the church had no more saying in most things. he had a unique and utterly terrifying way of waging war.
The Caroleans (soldiers in his army) would march as one, until they "could see the whites in their enemies eyes". They would stand as one, aim, and fire of a volley. This would decimate the enemy ranks, and completely destroy their morale. Imagine this: a huge army marching as oen towards you. You shoot at them, kill one. They do not break ranks or even acknowledge that they lost someone. They march at you, because in their head they know that if God wants them dead, they will die, otherwise their enemy will die. Then they all stop, aim and just unleash a horrible wall of death at you, killing most of your brothers in arms and wounding many others.
During the Great Northern war Denmark, Saxony-Poland and Russia delcared war against the Swedes. Within a week Denmark surrendered when Charles XII marched across the frozen Sea and surprised them at their capital.
Saxony-Poland would last another month or so(can't remember exactly).
And then only the greatest foe in Europe stood left. Russia, like they ahd before, used the scorched earth tactic as they fell back into their land, burning everything to nto give the Swedish army any food. At Poltava the Swedes suffered a great loss with many dead and the rest of the army on full retreat. Once back in Sweden Charles XII ordered the remaining army to march on Norway. But outside of the fortress of Fredriksten he was shot in the head and died. No one knows to this day if it was an enemy or friend that shot him. And the army marched back to Sweden, to bury their king.
He is by far the most known swedish king, and my personal favourite to learn about. It's up to each and one of you to pass judgement on his actions, Heroism or Folly? Was he a great King, or a king filled with hubris and madness?

He became king at 15 and before that he was partying like Mötley Crüe, so people were really worried. But as a king he became an exeptional war strategist and leader. But he fought three neighbouring countries at the same time, Denmark-Norway, Sach-Poland and Russia. They were allied against Sweden because they thought it was an easy target with such a young and inexperienced king. Karl took Denmark-Norway and Sach-Poland and held off the russians for a long time. But he emptied Swedens resources to finance the war and eventuelly lost a battle against the russians in Poltava 1709. That is considered the end of Sweden as a Great Nation. Karl was eventually shot to death in Norway.
But the king who made Sweden an empire was Gustav II Adolf, also known as Gustavus Adolphus - The Lion From the North. He is considered as the creator of modern warfare. Sabaton has a song about him aswell.

King Karl XII was 14 when he took the throne yes. And he and the Swedish army won battle after battle throughout Europe. Even though he was just a kid he showed amazing leader skills and had a brilliant mind for tactics as well and he was an able politician. He pretty much butchered his way through the Great Northern War and non could stop him. On the 11th of December, 1718 he was shot in the head and died, age 36. Who killed him is still not known.

One of the craziest things about the video is when they show the Swedish Caroleans (what the soldiers were called) advancing toward the enemy position in squares and when they are hit by artillery and something like two fifths of the formation are knocked down (presumably killed). What do the rest of them do? They just close ranks and continue marching until they are told to stop, drop to a knee, aim and fire at the enemy with their muskets. I'd wager that it takes an insane level of conviction and discipline not to break into a rout and flee the battlefield in sheer panic in that situation.
This is true for modern soldiers seeing their fellow soldiers die in front of them too of course, but it's still a different thing to calmly and in complete concert advance in formation, seeing the enemy fire their muskets and cannons at you, killing your friends and still keep the same pace and discipline.

Crowned king at 15. At 17 (AD 1700) he went to war as Sweden was attacked by Russia, Saxony - Poland and Denmark - Norway. Fifteen years later (1715) United Kingdom and Brandenburg - Preussia joined the enemies of Sweden. 30 November 1718, he fell at the Norwegian fortress Fredriksten. All those years he spent with his troops in the field. Imagine if George W. Bush had LED the assault on Afghanistan, spent 18 years there sharing the hardships of the US soldiers, and then died in combat. Something to ponder while philosophizing over our times "moral superiority".

Try Sabaton - 1648. This song is about end of The Thirty Years' War from siege prague. Or Sabaton - Aces In Exile (Battle of Britain). Or Sabaton - Far from the fame (But I think you don't know who is Karel Janoušek). Or Sabaton - Primo Victoria (Original music video),
because it's funny to destroy WWII tanks with Centurion.
    PS:

You can watch the Sabaton History episode on this if you want but I can give a quick explanation. Carolus Rex means King Charles or Karl in Swedish. He became king in 1697 at the age of fifteen. Sweden was surrounded by a tripel-alliance with Denmark-Norway, Poland-Saxony and Russia. They sought to reconquer many previously conquered lands. Charles father, Charles XI had defeated the Danish previously. Russia wanted to open up to Baltic trade. They wanted the lands connecting Finland and Estonia (modern-day Saint Petersburg). Charles faced a Russian force three times as large as his at the Battle of Narva and decisively defeated them.
He later pushed Denmark out of the war and defeated Poland-Saxony. The Swedish campaign in Russia would end in disaster at the Battle of Poltava with losses up in 7000-9000 and almost 3000 soldiers captured. Charles would flee to Turkey and later return to Sweden to invade Norway. It would all end in 1718 during the Siege of Fredrikshald, a Norwegian fortress. One night, Charles was inspecting the defences of the enemy fortress and stuck his head over the trench his forces had dug. Then a shot was heard and the King was dead.
No one knows who actually shot the King as many of his own men were tired of fighting this long war but most likely was shot by Norwegian defender. The death of Charles XII would end Sweden's great era of war and empire (Stormaktstiden in Swedish).

if you find you got some time for it.. PLease react to Within Temptation, an other netherland band with amazing female front figure.. Start with "Stand my Ground" from "Within Temptation and Metropole Orchestra Black Symphony Full Concert HD 720p" it should be a good warming up song so you can feel what you can expect. After that you can move on to "The Cross" (same video, there is a timestamp comment in the comment section). You should have the feeling by now so we can move up abit to "The heart of everything" (this song can even make a rock get goosebumps, Same video). After here on pick whatever it will blow out your brainholes whatever you pick. "Angels, Mother Earth and Ice Queen" will feel like a nuclear blast to your brainholes.

Since close quarters combat was deemed obsolete at the time we Swedes got a little innovative. We developed this tactic called "Gå på" which means "Go on" or "Walk on". This meant that under no circumstance should you turn around and retreat. This was backed and proven very effective due to the strong Christian faith in the Swedish ranks which made them believe that all deaths was already planned by God and thus you will die whatever happens. So the Caroleans marched on through the hail of enemy musket volleys and cannon balls until they were 30 meters from the enemy ranks. Then the first row got down on their knees. The second aimed above the first rows heads.*Drums go silent*..."*GE FYR!*" The enemy fired first at around 80 meters. Not effective. Then at 50 meters. Not enough. Swedes fire at 30 meters. Deadly. As soon as the first rows had fired they switched places with 3rd and 4th row. Same procedure. "*GE FYR!*" Now hundreds of enemy soldiers lie dead on the front lines and the ones still living are demoralized. Swedish command: "*ATTACK!*". The entire Swedish regiment charges at the enemy line. And due to hand to hand combat was obsolete, the enemy rarely had a rapier or sword to fight with. But the Swedes were armed with bayonets and swords. Cavalry was commonly armed with pistols in some cases but always had a sword. The Swedish cavalry tactics were also very effective. They wee so close to each other that their knees were touching. And then that group of cavalry charges through your lines in a spearhead formation. One horse weighs 500kg. Imagine that, but 500 of those at the same time at 50km/h. First two rows shatter and mot die on impact. Then the these elite Caroleans cut their way through the routing enemy soldiers. And no one was specifically trained in only one field of combat. An artilleryman was able to ride a horse and was armed with a sword and thus was he able to become a cavalryman. They were also trained with muskets and bayonets and thus was an infantry unit as well. Infantry cold ride horses and load and fire cannons and cavalrymen could fire muskets and load and fire cannons. This proved especially effective during the Battle of Fraustadt in 1704 where 9400 Swedes stood against 20 000 Russians. Cavalry charge the flanks. Boom! Musket volleys. The Russians had artillery but the Swedes didn't so when the Russians were routing and retreating the Swedish infantry turned the Russian cannons around and fired at the retreating Russians, Poles and Saxons. The cavalry caught up to the retreating Saxons and tool them as hostages. Same with the Russians and Poles. The Saxons and Poles were let go. The Russians were executed in masses by Swedish bayonets. The Swedes suffered 700 casualties (deaths) another 900 wounded. The Russians suffered 8000 deaths during the battle. Then 7000 more were killed after the battle. A total of 15 000 Russians died. Only 5000 survived and the majority weren't even Russians.

He invaded Denmark at the age of 17. He lead his troops to his real first battle at the age of 18 at the Battle of Narva where 10 000 Swedes fought against 40 000 entrenched Russians and won with less than 1000 casualties while the Russians suffered 18 000 casualties (some hundreds by the bridge over the frozen river collapsing and the panicked troops in the rear pushed on and the ones on the edges fell in and froze to death). He died at the Siege of Fredrikshald 1918 where he got shot in the head just seconds after being warned by a French officer that the top of the trench is no fit place for a king. The soldier next to the officer: "Don't warn him. He'll just expose himself even more if you do" and *BANG*... *thud*...The king is dead and no one knows who killed him, friend or foe.
Edit: From the year 1699-1709 he didn't lose a single battle. In 1709 though the Russians won their first battle at Poltava where they outnumbered the Swedes 2:1 and with the Russian elite forces making up the whole army. Had the Swedes been provided proper rations and gotten rest after their march, and had half the army not been sick, ill, exhausted or starving, they would most likely have won.
