Your comment about nightmares is on point-- the whole movie was inspired by James Cameron having a nightmare of basically the "robot walks out of the flames" scene.

    • @JoshMonreaux
      @JoshMonreaux ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh yeah! It wasn't just any ol' nightmare. It was a literal fever dream! Cameron was on vacation in, I think Mexico, and got violently ill. He was laid up in bed with a fever and had said nightmare.

Just before Sarah started to kiss Kyle, he turned away from her, and said that he shouldn't have said that (that he loved her etc.) . I always took that as him not expecting to become Sarah's lover / John's dad . After all, John giving him a picture of Sarah could have just meant that "this is the person who you are supposed to protect in the past" .
John never told Kyle "go back to the past and have sex with my mom" .

    • @timothyrenar5498

John knew that he would not exist unless he was created to exist so he knew how important it was for that situation to happen and I believe in his own way he was telling Reese that by giving him that photo without actually coming right out and saying that to him. Reese said "John gave me a picture of you" "I don't know why at the time" "But it was torn and faded" "You were young like you are now" etc... That was a hint by John to Reese.

There is a second bootstrap paradox that a lot of people miss:
At the beginning of the film, Reese says that the Terminator is a "Cyberdyne Systems Model 101", meaning the endoskeleton (101-600 series has/had rubber skin, 101-800 series has a flesh covering). At the end of the film, the sign outside the factory where they crush the the Terminator says "Cyberdyne Systems"

In addition to Lance Hendrickson playing Bishop the android in Cameron's "Aliens":
    - Reese was played by Michael Biehn, who played Hicks in "Aliens", and was also in Cameron's 1989 "The Abyss"
    - One of the three punks at the beginning is played by Bill Paxton who played Hudson in "Aliens", and is also in Cameron's "True Lies" and "Titanic".
    - Jenette Goldstein, who played Vasquez in "Aliens" also plays foster mother Janelle Voight in "Terminator 2".
    - Michael Biehn and Bill Paxton were both in "Tombstone"

It doesn't need to be a time loop. The idea of "parallel timelines" is that every time you go to the past it is like a tree trunk and things you do in the past set up new branches or timelines. So what happened in 1984 set up a new future which existed alongside the old one.

    1. Linda Hamilton ROCKED. She's really built in T2. Must watch next. You WILL love it. I promise.😎
    2. Lance Henriksen/Vukovich and Michael Biehn/Reese also played in Aliens as Bishop and Hicks respectively.
    3. The late Bill Paxton is the only actor whose characters have died in The Terminator, Alien and Predator series.
    4. If this weren't a movie the ammunition would not have been left on the counter in the gun shop.
    5. Ginger's boyfriend Matt must be a lousy lay if she needs her music when they rock and roll.

Kyle started from his parents. Sarah started from her parents. Kyle and Sarah came together to produce John. It’s not as bad as in sometime travel movies where an object has no inventor or creator. In 1982’s “Time Rider,” a man travels back in time Lesa necklace with a woman who turns out to be his grandmother who passes it down to him. But who actually crafted the necklace? It just seems to exist.
In this movie, the real question is where the computer tech for the machines to take over came from. In T2, it appears the tech actually came from the computers that emerged from the tech.

Kyle got the picture long before he went back in time. You can see it in his flashbacks. Kyle even said he didn't know why John gave him the picture, so it wasn't part of the mission briefing. He also volunteered because he was already in love with her. So why would John give him the picture way ahead of the time travel? Just handing out his mothers picture to some random soldier as wank material?

    "I'll be back."
Fun Fact: One afternoon during a break in filming, Arnold Schwarzenegger went into a restaurant in downtown L.A. to get some lunch and realized all too late that he was still in Terminator makeup - with a missing eye, exposed jawbone and burned flesh.
Juice Dodged Fact: O.J. Simpson was considered for the Terminator, but the producers feared he was "too nice" to be taken seriously as a cold-blooded killer. Ironic.
Director Cameo Fact: Near the beginning of the movie, when Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) receives a message on her answering machine breaking her date, the voice on the machine is James Cameron's.

While it's true that there is a tendency for scifi films to expect "too much" of the future, there are two factors at play. 1) The film makers wanted to portray the future, but not have it be so remote as to lack emotional effect. They wanted you to worry about the future by making it seem uncomfortably near. 2) Sometimes it seems like the rate of advancement has slowed tremendously. What have we really done in the last 20 years that's new, except for the smartphone? We went to the Moon in the late 60s. We had satellite communications, lasers, solar cells. We developed computer chips in the 80s. We had the internet in the 90s. Then things seemed to stop, about the same time jobs went overseas. Even so, we have some AI and some robot dogs and life-like-ish androids. So this future is maybe not that far away after all.

The loop is what makes the last scene so impactful because it gives the whole story a sense of destiny. I like the sequel but in some ways they undercut that tone from the first movie.

  • @asterix7842
    @asterix7842 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This was a very low budget film, so much of it was filmed using what James Cameron called "guerilla filmmaking" to avoid having to get permits. The cast and crew would show up at a certain location and they'd film a scene quickly and be gone by the time the police would show up. Some of the people seen in the background of some of the scene were just regular people who just happened to be there.

Hello. Let me disagree and help you better understand the temporal logic in "The Terminator": it's absolutely not a loop. Or, at least, not necessarily.
First we have to go back to the moment when Kyle Reese tells Sarah Connor (under the bridge) that John Connor is the same height as Kyle: how many people are our height? An infinity! So this isn't a feature that hints that Kyle is John's father (well, he isn't until that point).
John's fate changes the moment Kyle and Sarah have sex: at that moment John's father becomes Kyle, but up until that point in the timeline John's father was someone else, never mentioned in the film. From that sex scene onwards John will change (perhaps he will be blond instead of dark-haired, or he will have brown eyes instead of blue, etc.), precisely because the father will be another person.
In reality (perhaps) John's fate changes the first moment Sarah eats pizza in the pub: because until that moment her future is not changed by Kyle or the Terminator, while there she hears the news on TV and from that moment on she decides to run away and then take refuge in the club, while if things had continued normally maybe she could have met a man at the restaurant and that man could be John's future father.
So the question that many ask themselves when they watch this film ("but how is it possible that John sends his father back in time, who is also younger than him?", age difference that will be mentioned in the second movie) does not it makes sense to exist precisely for the reason just explained: at the beginning of the first movie John's father IS NOT KYLE.
For the "time loop" argument, let's say that there are two alternatives: either the future changes ("future is not set", which Kyle also says to Sarah, still under the bridge, in the sentence that John made him memorize) and therefore Skynet will never be created, the Terminators as well and there will be no "Judgment Day", with obviously the impossibility for John to send Kyle back (in this case maybe the two will never meet); or the war will happen anyway, Skynet and the Terminators will be created and John will have to send Kyle back in time: here a loop could be created, but without obligations (Kyle could have sex with the young Sarah, remaining John's father, or not and John's father will be someone else that Sarah will meet in her life; or again, Sarah will never give birth to John and he will disappear into thin air in the year 2029, that is, immediately after sending Kyle back in time (a bit like Biff Tannen in "Back To The Future 2" in a deleted scene, after stealing the DeLorean)).
All of this to explain that it's not a loop and it's all simple enough to make it "believable" (assuming time travel is invented one day; unless it's already secretly available to someone... somewhere).
    Hello from Bologna (Italy).

Time loop plots might make great action movies for writers but they're impossible because of the paradox they set up right from the start. This universe has a failsafe system to protect itself from being destroyed. If a technologically advanced species were able to go back in time and change events then what's to stop them from preventing the universe from happening?
That's the failsafe system the universe has built into itself because those who created this universe aren't going to allow some lower species within their creation to stop it from continuing on. You can observe past events all you want with advanced technology but you cannot change those events because the past is there to learn from, not to cheat life out of bad situations we cause.
