- This is a movie reaction to my first time watching The Terminator, released in 1984 and directed by James Cameron and he certainly delivered us an epic 80s sci-fi action film that ended up being such a cult classic and holds up so well to this day! Arnold Schwarzenegger is terrifying, but oh so good in this role. I loved Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor's relationship and how they worked together. The score was the best kind of synthwave music that I love so much. I'll be back for Terminator 2: Judgment Day - coming in February because I am impatient. The transport process from the future will only carry organic material. That's why they showed up Naked with NO weapons. The flesh surrounding the combat chassis of the Terminator was enough to bring it along.
The terminator is not evil, it's a machine, It has no concept of evil. Only people can be evil, nothing in nature can be evil. Snakes, bears, rocks, hurricanes can all kill you, but they are not evil.
There are numerous Terminator cash grabs in the franchise but T2 is the only one of historic acclaim, and seeing this one is a must to get the full effect of T2.

The original star trek series from the 60's had numerous boot strap time episodes. The most well known would be "the city on the edge of forever" .. The fourth star trek movie in 85 with the original cast from the sixties also had a boot strap time theory as well.
"The Picture" is one of my most favorite setup-payoffs in cinema. Reese says he was wondering what Sarah was thinking at that moment. She was thinking about him. 😲😢

@@rodentnolastname6612 even more tragic, since she never saw what the photo was that Kyle was referring to, she’d take a while before she realised it was that one. She may never have been able to remember what she was thinking.
Luckily there was a film crew there to capture it all.

I joined Columbia House (at an age younger than was legal, heh heh) specifically to get The Terminator on VHS back in the day ;)
I saw it on release. I'd had a few pints and decided to check it out . I was sober in 10 minutes.

Thank you for enjoying the “Hey you can’t do that! WRONG” dialogue. No one ever picks up on or mentions the low key humor of that line. It’s both a serious and funny response at the same time.
Unfortunately most of the banter between Traxler and Vukovich was cut out. Those two have great dialog together.

Sad fact: When Kyle speaks about the photograph of Sarah, he always used to wonder what she was thinking in that moment. At the end of the scene, when the picture is finally taken, we found out in that moment she was thinking of him all along.
Before Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast as the titular character, OJ Simpson was considered, but James Cameron changed his mind saying, "He's too much of a nice guy to play the role of a ruthless killer."😳🤦

Not really. The Terminator was supposed to be an every man, with Lance Henriksen slated to play him. Arnold Schwarzenegger was interviewed for the role of Kyle Reese because he was pushed on the director by the studio.
James Cameron had lunch with Schwarzenegger where he decided to have a fight so Schwarzenegger would opt out of the role. Arnold then expressed his interest in playing The Terminator instead of Kyle Reese. Though it substantially changed the image of the terminator, the idea interested James. He redid his concept art of The Terminator with Arnold instead of Lance, and history was made. Lance was then cast as police officer Vukovich, and was ultimately able to play a robot in Aliens.
Actually, Arnold didn't want to play the Reese character, but wanted to play the killer Terminator instead!
I had also heard that Arnold wanted to play Reese, but Cameron told him to think about Star Wars. In Star Wars, the most iconic character is always Darth Vader. Luke Skywalker or Han Solo were just afterthoughts. This was what convinced Arnold that the Terminator role would be better.

The remnants of those thoughts came out in what must be dialogue left over from the original script, when Reece describes the Terminator as an infiltration unit.
In a world where the humans are starving, it’s be easy to spot a human so beefed up as what the Arnie Terminator was. There’s no way you’d have Arnie as an infiltrator in that situation.
La Jetée (1962) which is a strange experimental French "photo film", using only still images, that examines the chicken and egg paradox of time travel. It was basically remade by Terry Gilliam as "12 Monkeys" (another great film worth reacting to).
I love 12 monkeys. That's one of those movies that I talked about with friends for weeks afterwards.

@@patrickflanagan3762 I saw that one years ago. The ending was unexpected to say the least. "Primer", I hear, is one of the most well thought out time travel related stories but very complicated to follow. It made $840,000 dollars on a $7000 budget. That 120 times its investment!
The best time travel story ever is the Outer Limits (1996) episode A Stitch In Time, in my opinion.
Fun Fact; Arnold practiced shooting guns so he could fire them without blinking. He also practiced fast reloading and stripping the guns blindfolded. Guns and Ammo magazine gave the film praise for realistic depictions of gun use.

Fun Fact; they built the dance club scene set in an empty retail shop. While filming, a bunch of people thought it was a real dance club and got in line to get in 😲🤣🤣

For some reason, one of my favorite little "trivia" things about the Terminator itself, is that Arnold's eyes "scan" like a security camera. If you look a scene or two, you can see him turn his eyes completely to one side before his head starts moving, and then he does it again in the other direction. I never really thought about that until I heard them (either Cameron or Schwarzenegger, I can't remember) mention it in an interview/documentary.
This film could be seen as an example of a causal loop. John Connor sent Kyle Reese back in time -> John Connor was conceived -> John Connor is able to send Kyle Reese back in time. Based solely on this film, it’s unclear whether Kyle Reese was always John’s father or if he became such only because he was sent back. Either way, his being sent back allows John to eventually send him back.

So... I'm an old guy. Grew up in the late 60's, early 70's. I saw this when it came out in 1984. And, as it happens, I had just moved out to LA, so it was kind of fun seeing places in the city.
What I like best about the movie is what seemed to underwhelm you. Once all of the human flesh had been burned off the terminator, and you could see the hyper alloy combat chassis underneath, I got the dreadful realization that there was nothing that they could have done to this machine to have stopped it. It's just an evil, robot skeleton bent on destruction. Of course, back in 1984, the effects were okay, but not great. However, having grown up on stop-motion horror movies, I do find stop-motiony things to be very unsettling. And, the animation of the terminator's endoskeleton was... unsettling to me at the time. Nothing like the kind of stuff we have now. But... I didn't see this for the first time now. I saw it then.
I don't know what the first bootstrap paradox movie was, but I do enjoy time travel movies. The Time Machine (1960) was pretty good. 1985 was the first Back to the Future movie, which I loved immensely. (Still do.) But... it's a different kind of movie. Now, time travel is passe. Been there. Done that. Again. A long time ago.

Another great reaction. I always enjoy the after talk. Oh, I've watched a few other Terminator reactions. You're the first one I've seen that made the connection that Sarah started turning into what she was about to become as she pulled Reese up and started ordering him as if in combat. Great realization on your part.
Nostalgia is definitely the feeling I get when watching this. Remembering the late 80s going into the early 90s, this movie is definitely a part of that. Watching it on VHS and the quality not being able to show certain details like his iconic spikey hairstyle was actually his hair burned away and not noticing his eyebrows are also burnt off. lol
My favourite behind the scenes trivia is that both Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron where going to argue with each other at a meeting to get out of the movie, because Arnold was cast as Reese, but he didn't want to play that character and Cameron didn't want him to play him either... and also, OJ Simpson didn't get cast as the Terminator because nobody would believe him as a cold-blooded killer. lol
Terminator made Arnold a big star, but I would recommend his first real big hit, Conan the Barbarian, from 1982. It's epic, great soundtrack, and it popularised a whole movie genre that I won't say in case even that spoils some things. 😎
Roughly 31:50 It’s a deleted scene in this movie, but right after Sarah is loaded into the ambulance, we see the name of the factory: Cyberdyne Robotics. Thus setting up important details for the sequel.
Like Obi-Wan Kenobi once said to Luke, that depends on your point of view. For some people (myself included) there are only two Terminator movies; for others there are more, and even a TV show.
And for that homesick feeling that 80s movies brings to you, I highly recommend for you to watch The Goonies. It's a fun kids movie with some faces that people would recognize later on (one of them you'll see... Soon™).
They actually made a mistake on this film if you notice . When he says "' I'll Be Back " and comes through the door with the car , his lights are turned off coming through the door , but the lights are shining bright in the police officers face behind the desk .
Reactions like these are just like getting to watch the movie for the 1st time all over again!

Revolutionary. Changed the Sci-fi genre forever. It mixed elements of sci-fi and horror genres and blended them into one seamlessly. James Cameron was a visionary in that way. And the fact that he directed this movie with a grand total of $1 million is something really.

This movie is a classic! One of Arnolds most famous roles. Strong female lead in Sarah Connor. Tho Terminator 2 is by far my, and mostly everyones fav, this movie still holds up pretty well with the make up and practical effects, and still worth watching every year.

Then I have anemoia real bad for about a few years before I was born. I was born in 1981 and sometimes long for the seeming simplicity of the the mid to late 70s. But I don't remember anything from before like 84-85. Nothing clear anyway. But it's not a perfect time either. There was a lot of things about back then that wasn't very great either. The 2020s will be "the good old days" to some future generation and we'll all wonder why. And around we go and go and go. I do not get the recent nostalgia for the 90s or early 2000s. Anything from 1998 on still feels new to me. I remember every summer the movies came out and everything and everyone complained about the unending CGI fests in the late 90s. In like 1997 we were already there. "Just a bunch of computer graphics." Now everyone is like "oh yeah, back when they made real movies and used CGI well." But nobody really felt that way at the time. I actually feel like they use CGI better now...or at least in the last decade because most people are over it. Not as wowed as they used to be..

To answer your question: There are only two Terminator movies. There are some people who will tell you there are several more but they are wrong. The ONLY two Terminator movies are perfect storytelling and doing another would have been ridiculous so obviously Hollywood stopped at two.
My favourite fun fact about this movie has to do with the terminator character. The producers wanted OJ Simpson to play the terminator, but James Cameron didn't think Simpson looked like a killer. I hope you get the irony.
I was born in the very early 80's and watched all these R rated movies when I was still a kid. I think we all did. Sometimes mum would record the movies to VCR but cut out the raunchy scenes. A lot of people somehow think you don't remember the decade you were born in but I remember catching the bus and all the older kids asking the driver to play hair metal constantly since I was 5. When you are that age, you can soak up so much information like a sponge - its how we learn and probably this early formative exposure is what differentiates generations. There were a lot of really good movies made in the 80's. I'm surprised how so many reactors have only got to some of the headline films and they're missing out on some truly golden nostalgic content. There are some great teen flicks. The one I often turned to replay most often as a kid was Teen Wolf - classic Michael J Fox that everyone ignores for some reason. For me, the first reactor who takes a risk to cover this deserves an accolade...

When discussing what characters know or don't know, what information is an isn't available, et cetera, it's taking this movie by itself.)
This movie is an example of predestination, also called a "stable time loop"; two, actually. There isn't a paradox, as they make perfectly logical sense. John exists because he sent Kyle back, and John was trained to fight Skynet because Skynet sent the Terminator back. Things happened because they happened. It makes perfect sense if you think of it geographically instead of chronologically.
For the loop with Reese: You're Kaiielle in your living room, and when you walk into your kitchen, you're still Kaiielle. Your objective location changed, but your subjective existence did not. Similarly, Reese was Reese when he fought the H.K.s and ran from the Terminators, and he was still Reese when he stepped into Los Angeles. That the objective chronological location changed didn't mean his subjective existence changed.
John was aware of the loop; he gave Reese the photograph, knowing Reese would fall in love with her, and he sent Reese back, knowing they would create him. He did it because he did it; if he didn't send Reese back, he couldn't have sent Reese back.
I think most people's problem with the idea is the notion of free will. We want to believe we can change reality, and the idea of predestination throw that right out the window.
Interestingly, there's some debate about how much Skynet "knew". Was it aware of the time loop? We don't know. Reese said it became "self aware", but what does that even mean? Not only does this term come from a military grunt (Reese was an intelligent man by all accounts to be sure, but due to circumstance incapable of having any real experience with or knowledge of robotics as a field), it comes from a movie released in 1984. The closest thing to "robots" the public was really aware of was Teddy Ruxpin (not that I'm dating myself or anything...); the Internet was only a thing in a very strict, strict sense (in 1983 ARPANET split into to distinct networks, the military MILNET and the civilian Internet¹)
Two time travel movies I *heartily* recommend are "Predestination" starring Ethan Hawke and released in 2014, and "Primer" starring and directed by Shane Carruth and released in 2004. "PRedestination"--what can be said about it? It's one of those movies where nearly *any* attempt to describe either gives the whole thing away, or seems utterly nonsensical. It's a movie about time travel taht explores the idea of predestination. I think that's about all I can really say.
"Primer" is an independent film; two engineers accidentally discover a method of time travel. The film explores ides like causality and ethics. It's complex but does a fair job of explaining what really needs to be explained.

1. "Civilian" in this context refers to the fact that it was not primarily used for military or government purposes, but rather for scientific research and communication among academics.
2. For my fellow Internet nerds: During the late 1970s to mid-1980s, the Internet was still a relatively small and closed community. It was not until the development of the World Wide Web in the 1990s that the Internet truly began to be accessible to the general public.
Incidentally, 1983 was also the year the Domain Name System (DNS) was introduced and the first TCP/IP protocols were fully implemented.

Kaiielle, I've seen this movie a hundred times (well, you know what I mean), and I never caught the glowing red eye when Arnold is driving the tanker truck. Good job!
Terminator getting his eyebrows burned 🔥 off by the fiery explosion just prior to punching 👊 through the windshield to grab Sarah was a brilliant idea.
It gives the vibe that the Terminator is not quite human. Not unlike an unstoppable Frankenstein monster after you! -OG
Funniest line in this movie to me is when The Terminator scrolls through his list of responses when the landlord asks about the bad odor coming from the room and he chooses to say "Fuck you, asshole." 😅😂🤣☠️

There is a lot of irony in this film. Kyle's photo of Sarah gets burned in the apocalyptic future but gets taken again in the past when the boy at the gas ⛽️ station snaps her 📸 picture.
Kyle says he always wondered what Sarah was thinking about in the picture. Little did he know that she was thinking was thinking of him as she made her recordings.
Kyle tragically dies in the past, only to be born again in the future. It's a vicious circle. An unyielding time loop. This is a very creative story. It's such a great movie! -OG

Only living things can travel through time. That's why they come through naked. Not even their clothes can go through much less, bringing back futuristic weapons. And is one of the reasons why the Terminator has human flesh to go back in time. -OG
The earliest "Stable Time Loop" film listed on TVTropes appears to be "La Jetée (1962)". But I think it's been done many times in print during the golden age of sci fi.
One of the best in print is the short story "By His Bootstraps" by Robert Heinlein
Ahhh La Jetee! Classic French 60s Sci Fi! A must watch for all serious Science Fiction Cinephiles.

To answer one of your questions, namely. why the Terminator doesn't just kill everyone he meets, and just goes after Sarah. Think of it this way, if you have an ant infestation, what makes more sense? Killing each minion ant one by one (keeping in mind that there can be millions of them), or taking out the queen, and thus ensuring that no more ants can be created?
No more Sarah means no John; no John means no Human resistance; no Human resistance means an easy takeover for Skynet/Cyberdyne. It's the most efficient, logical solution, and we all know that machines are all about logic and efficiency.😅

Regarding your bootstrap question, the movie Somewhere in Time (1980) was James Cameron's favorite movie at the time he made Terminator. That's enough said to stay spoiler-free. I can say Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour, and the location are fantastic in that movie. Watching that might even make you want to watch Christopher Reeves Superman movies for more of his smile

In 1994 i was 8 years old and my father showed me Terminator 2 and i enjoyed it so he put a vhs tape of THE TERMINATOR in the vcr and ever since then THE TERMINATOR has been my favorite movie.

The Bootstrap Paradox concept was first introduced by Robert A. Heinlein's Sci Fi book ‘By His Bootstraps’ (1941). The 'bootstrap paradox' is a derivative of the 'bootstrap' phrase with the addition of time to the concept.
The 'original bootstrap' concept of 'pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps' basically means accomplishing an impossible task. It's been around since at least the 18th century with ‘The Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchhausen’.
There are several movies from the beginning of cinema to show the 'bootstrap' concept. As for the 'bootstrap paradox' concept, it had to be after 1941. The earliest movie series I know to have both the 'bootstrap paradox' AND 'alternate timelines of reality' concepts was from the original Planet of the Apes series starting 1968.

Late 80s baby checking in. I saw this movie and the second one as a kid and they were a couple of movies that I regularly asked to rewatch over and over again. I loved this reaction video, it’s so fun to feel that first time reaction over again as it were. I hope you enjoy T2 as much if not more. It’s my favourite movie of all time!
The actor who played Dr. Silverman is VERY famous in the gaming community. He did all the voiceover narration for all the characters in the original World of Warcraft game, Vanilla, The Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King, etc.

This was essentially James Cameron's first movie. Not a bad start. I think he may have a promising future.
If you go back and rewatch the Terminator's fight with the punks, that punk he killed, the Terminator actually lifted him up, immediately upon punching him. He didn't reach in, or tear anything out. The Terminator just straight-up punched THROUGH the guy. What Kyle was saying, (in the police station) was that the Terminator would be able to do anything it wanted to kill Sarah, and nobody would be able do anything to stop it.
Great reaction. I really like watching when people legit don't know what's going on. You piecing together things in the beginning was my experience seeing it the first time.
I can't believe there's only two Terminators and the studios didn't want to capitalize on T2's massive success , even if it meant ruining a perfect ending. Also, I advocate watching the theatrical version of T2 and not the director's cut.
I'd recommend the directors cut. It has some nice character building moments and some great (REDACTED FOR SPOILERS) in it
to answer your question: there are only two Terminator movies. A shame really that they never did anything more with the franchise; no more sequels, no tv series, no nothing. Dont let anyone try to convince you otherwise. Just like they only made one The Matrix movie, they only made two The Terminator movies

Having read Arnold's book Total Recall my Life story I had a much better understanding of how he and James Cameron approached the character and how separating him from Linda Hamilton and the actor who played Kyle made the other actors trying to get away from him seem more real.
I crossed time for this reaction to say past Kaiielle you will have better reactions but this reaction of truly one of my all time favorites is a futuristic 10 out of 10 and I'll be back for part 2 again next week. But will continue Spiderman later.
I think this is the greatest sci-fi movie 🎬 of all time. (And it was shot on a relatively short budget) Cameron used guerrilla movie making to flim a lot of it.

Many Terminator fans say they love the sequel best, Terminator 2. When I first watched Terminator 2 in theaters, I was in total agreement that this was the best!
But now that I'm 48 years old, I have since rewatched these films. And I gotta say, as much as T2 was the bomb, my heart goes out to the original Terminator. I love the 80s nostalgic moments. Even the music soundtrack played in the Techo something club where Sarah almost dies.
While I love T2, I just don't get the same feelings of nostalgia. It's still considered too new to me, I guess. Even though it's over 30 years old already. Ironic. -OG

If you want to see more of the "Future War" I highly recommend Terminator Resistance a solid FPS inspired heavily by Terminator 1 from the synth soundtrack to the 80s neon lights etc. Terminator 2 is a great film but I always loved the tone and feel of Terminator 1 slightly more. It's a case of what you prefer I guess similar to how people look a Alien and Aliens two great films with their own directions. There also making a sequel to the Terminator game this time open world and hopefully higher budget as I will admit the first time is limited by it's budget but you can tell it's got the heart and love of the series. The studio are also making a Robocop game as well which I cant recall if you watched so I'll hope off mentioning anything about the game.

It is truly awesome to see someone see this for the first time with little or no knowledge of the movie prior to reacting. There is almost nothing that is not explained to those who wait. Born in the early 60s for me. And for the budget the social effects are very good for the time. Hold on for the effects for T2.
24:25 Alas, Sarah's mom is almost certainly dead. The Terminator would have to have met her in order to copy her voice. We saw that it was able to impersonate that police officer earlier from only a few seconds of hearing him so presumably a brief conversation at the door of the cabin would have been sufficient. It would have then killed her and simply sat waiting for Sarah to call.

By sending the Terminator to eliminate Sarah, thus removing what it saw as the cause of its defeat - John Connor - it instead unwittingly created the events that resulted in John's very existence).
