    As a student at ASU in 1989, I worked security and was at this game. I remember this game well. Cold day in Tempe and Denver Broncos fans everywhere. I patrolled the endzone seats in the open end of Sun Devil Stadium (south). Made $50 a game.

      Cardinals should have worn their red shirts. Weather, playing surface and having all their fans around them already made the Broncos feel at home. At least a white jersey would have disturbed their routine and rhythm off somewhat.

    This game was blacked out on KPNX in Phoenix, KNAZ in Flagstaff (part of the Phoenix market) and KVOA in Tucson.
    As the vast majority of the state of Arizona is in either the Phoenix or Tucson markets, this had the effect of keeping the game off of television in the entire state of Arizona, except for Yuma County (El Centro-Yuma market) and northern and central Apache County (Albuquerque market).
    This would be a consistent problem for the Cardinals in their 18 years playing at Sun Devil Stadium. Only 12 Cardinals games in the stadium ever sold out:
    September 12, 1988: VS. Dallas (aired on ABC's Monday Night Football)
    November 22, 1992: VS. Dallas (aired regionally on CBS)
    September 19, 1993: VS. Dallas (aired on TNT's Sunday Night Football)
    October 23, 1994: VS. Dallas (aired regionally on Fox)
    October 30, 1994: VS. Pittsburgh (aired on TNT's Sunday Night Football, first non-Cowboys sellout, first season with multiple sellouts, simulcast on an over-the-air station in Phoenix, can anybody tell me what station aired this game as well as the 1993 Cowboys game?)
    December 25, 1995: VS. Dallas (aired on ABC's Monday Night Football, used as filming location for Jerry Maguire, last of four consecutive years a home game against the Cowboys sold out)
    November 15, 1998: VS. Dallas (aired regionally on Fox)
    December 27, 1998: VS. San Diego (aired regionally on CBS)
    September 27, 1999: VS. San Francisco (aired on ABC's Monday Night Football; was game that ended Steve Young's career; first sellout against NFC opponent other than Dallas)
    November 21, 1999: VS. Dallas
    September 17, 2000: VS. Green Bay (the final sellout at Sun Devil Stadium)
    While the September 23, 2001 game against Denver did not sell out, it was allowed to be televised in Arizona, as the NFL lifted all blackouts that week as a reaction to 9/11, which postponed week 2's games to occur in the first weekend of January, 2002, as week 17.
    The Cardinals would not get a sellout in the 21st century until moving into State Farm Stadium in Glendale in 2006; all games have sold out since then.
    A huge reason there was so many blackouts of Cardinals games in Arizona is because Sun Devil Stadium has no way of shielding spectators from the intense Arizona heat, which made many fans skittish about seeing a Cardinals game (in contrast, State Farm Stadium has a retractable roof, which usually only opens up for night games, and this is not a guarantee). In the team's defense, it was intended as a temporary measure. But a new stadium did not get off the ground until the early 21st century.
    By contrast, Arizona State plays many of its home games at night, where it is cooler.

      I don't know how the Cards could stand playing at Arizona State for so long with the lack of night games, especially early in the season. I don't blame fans for not wanting to sit in that heat all day even without the humidity we here in Florida have to deal with.

    • @LogoAttitude
      @LogoAttitude 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marcus813 The NFL has for a long time not permitted teams to sell their own TV rights outside the preseason. If NFL on TV was more like CFB on TV nowadays, there'd be far more national TV games especially at night.

    • @marcus813
      @marcus813 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LogoAttitude I've long known that the national networks have the regular season and playoffs on lock, but with the way things have been set up for so long, an NFL club having an outdoor place in the desert was never gonna be sustainable due to all the afternoon games. The Cards wanted a stadium with a roof soon after they moved to the Valley of the Sun for a reason and I can't believe they had to wait so long to get one. Also, I can't see the NFL's TV setup changing that radically even after the new TV deals expire.

    • @LogoAttitude
      @LogoAttitude 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do give the NFL credit for suspending the blackout rule, which they did starting in 2015 after the first ever blackout-free season in 2014

    • @LogoAttitude
      @LogoAttitude 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      However they still need to completely eliminate the no opposing games rule, to allow people in a market to choose not to watch their team's game if the team is struggling, and instead watch a more compelling game on the other network.

    I was a St.Louis/Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals fan from 1983 - 2001. They always had some talent but they were just overmatched especially back in the eighties - early nineties.

      You stopped being a Cardinal fan after 2001? Smart move.

    • @thomasnee270
      @thomasnee270 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, 2001 was the last season that I really followed football in general. IMHO, the NFL has become complete garbage the past twenty years. Although, I do watch it occasionally, I no longer consider myself to be a “Rabid” fan of the NFL. Lol....

    • @thomasnee270

      The Cardinals were actually decent In 2001 (7 - 9). They upset some really good teams that year mainly the Raiders.

      Bill Bidwell and Bob Irsay are probably the two worst owners in sports antiquity. Both of them were complete jackasses, who sabotaged their teams (Cards & Colts).

    This game also began a regional rivalry that has only been seen officially when the teams' respective divisions were paired in interconference play, for the most part. It is currently guaranteed to be play in seasons which share a calendar year with the Winter Olympics and World Cup.

    Wow the Cardinals QB’s in 1989 with Neil Lomax out for the season and eventually he would retire after the season were Gary Hogeboom, Tim Rosenbaugh & Tom Tupa (much more Remembered as a punter years later for the Patriots & Jets). OUCH

    • @crgray1979
      @crgray1979 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom Tupa scored the first 2 points conversion in nfl history

      Rosenbach has a pretty good year in 1990 and actually so did the Cardinals considering what was expected of them. Although they finished 5 - 11, they should of beaten the Giants in the Meadowlands and Green Bay in Tempe. I remember they were riding a three game winning streak toward the end of the year and actually had an outside chance of making the wildcard. They were 5 - 8 and were playing the Cowboys in Dallas. It was actually a huge game for both teams as Dallas was still in the playoff hunt as well. In typical Cardinals fashion back in those days they came out flat and got waxed 41 - 10. Pretty much ending any hopes of a postseason. Although, they did play the Giants & Eagles very tight in the last two weeks of the 1990 season.

      Lomax’s injury definitely hurt them in 1989 but so did JT Smith’s season ending injury in week nine. He was on pace to have an even better season than his record setting (87-88) seasons. Yes, I was a huge Cards fan back in the early eighties to mid nineties.

    Love that 89 Broncos team, cool to see Rosenbach first start. Trumpy should have been reminded you are color commentary not play by play, keeps blurting out fumble! The other teams recovers! Or the guy is open! Color commentary is after the play bozo....ugh!

    So the Cardinals tell the rookie QB the day before the game that he is getting his first NFL start even though he hasn't been practicing with the first team, they throw him to the wolves against a first-place team where he predictably plays terrible, then you yank him out in the second quarter in favor of a washed-up veteran QB that he was in there to replace to begin with. That's how much of a joke the Arizona franchise was back in those days.
