Wow...been hoping to see this. The first game I can remember watching as a kid. Pittsburgh pulled a big upset and nearly did it again five years later.
Despite the quality, I love these old games. This was the first Steeler playoff game I saw as a kid. Watching videos like this helps me get through this pandemic.
Wow does this game bring back memories. For about a year or so before this game we were pestering our dad to step up and join the world with a VCR. He finally came through days earlier for X-Mas. Not sure if it would work, but this was the first thing I ever recorded. Must have watched this game 40-50 times during the 80s. Haven't seen it since. Thank you!!
I remember watching this as a teenager.Unbelievable effort and win by Pittsburgh.To beat the 13-3 Broncos at home.I remember no one gave the Steelers much of a chance.They could have easily fell apart at beginning of game with those fumbles by Malone and game and momentum could have got away from them but they held fast and fought and pulled out a great win
Elway's first playoff appearance. I remember the massive hype when he was drafted in '83 along with the other quarterbacks like Marino, Tony Eason and Jim Kelly. Elway was one of the big, strong physically mobile quarterbacks back then which was unheard of at the time. 6'2" and 215 lbs was big at the time when other quarterbacks were 6'0" and 195-200 lbs.
That was Myway's first start, he was the backup on the wild card in 1983 Broncos who lost the Seahawks but he played in that game when they were getting crushed early.
This game showed everyone that the Steelers were better than their 9 and 7 record indicated. You also have to remember that they beat the Raiders on the road near the end of the regular season in order to get into the playoffs. And they even had an early 14 to ten lead on the Dolphins in the AFC championship game but then Dan Marino proved to be too much for that revamped Steelers defense.

As a lifelong cowboys & NFL fan. Since the mid 70’s. Chuck Noll was a great coach. Until he retired his teams were always competitive. Didn’t have the super stars in the 80’s like he did in the 70’s. But good solid teams. Love watching these games from my youth.

Actually one of the great upsets of all time. A 13-3 team playing at home doesn’t lose to a 9-7 on the road just every day. Even more rarely during this era when huge playoff upsets of home teams was rare.

Dan Marino was the obvious pick in the first round that they didn't make, but that's just the start of it. Look at each round of that draft, and look at the talent they passed up in almost every round. If they would have picked the right people, that team would have been set up in the next decade before the cap era even started. I'll give you four names off the bat that they could have had on the same team had they just picked the right people. Mark Clayton, Richard Dent, Charles Mann, and Tim Krumerie. And that's just the start of it.
I remember seeing this game at a restaraunt on Grand Cayman Island at a restaurant when there was no other tv available to see at the time on the island at that time that I knew of it was a pleasant surprise to see when the Steelers upset the Broncos in the playoffs

Chuck noll favored these like Greg garrity Paul skansi and it hurt the steelers teams of the 1980s. Rick woods was another noll favored. Goodman Dunn Beasley started over more talented and faster players Willis Gary and Nelson. When bill cowher came along that changed. For instance Barry foster over merle hoage. Hoage another noll favored.
Doubly sucks that the guy they drafted literally crashed and burned his career. He seemed like a player on the d line but we'll never know. RIP Gabriel Rivera.
Well sort of yeah, technically the Steelers beat the 49ers but there was a horrible phantom pass interference call late in that game that gave them the win. Otherwise the 49ers would have went undefeated in 1984.
I didn't bet this game, because I didn't have a bookie as an 18 yr old lol. But I would have loved to bet Pittsburgh pre game. However, I'd have lost whatever I wagered once this game got started. I would have definitely bet on Denver in live betting....I still can't believe the Steelers won once they fell behind 17-10. What a great game.

The 84 Steelers were better than their record. They lost on a fluky final play at Indy and by only 2 points in the 4th quarter at Cincinnati. They were basically an 11-5 squad IMO. They were good enough to beat in the same season, the defending SB champ Raiders and the eventual SB champ 49ers and were the only team to to beat SF all year. They just couldn't matchup with a prime Marino in the reg or post season. Had they found a way to upset Miami in the AFC title game, you know, one of those fluky wins where you get tipped interceptions and special teams TDS etc. they would have had a chance against SF in the SB. Not because they had beaten them in the reg season, but because they just matched up with them well.
I agree if they would have drafted marino, or Bradshaw's elbow didn't blow up in May of 1984? I think this team would have won the afc, at least I've been watching Steelers football since I was 5 years old in 1975, this is still the best run defense I have ever seen from this team. And that was with Jack Lambert hurt all season. Imagine how they would have been had he played healthy?
Not really, this was a young team in transition. Only Donnie Shell and Robin Cole remained from the 70's defense. A lot of rookies made the team this year and was basically a rebuild from '83. Only Webster and Stallworth remained on offense. Amazingly, Stallworth might have had his best year ever this year after losing almost the entire '83 season to injury.

Even in my beloved Steelers worst years we we're still the shit. Born in 82. Never new they were still competitive in early 80's
Not to mention a very young defensive assistant for the Steelers Tony Dungy who would later become a Super Bowl-winning coach and a Hall Of Famer.

Steelers dominated this game on both sides of the ball... only turnovers and special teams mistakes kept Denver in it... Malone was pretty good.
