- Full step by step tutorial. Learn how to prepare your strips of fabric, how to start your basket and finish with a circular ending.
If you don't want the raw end look then this is the method for you. One side of the fabric is folded over and all strips are sewn together.
If you want a really solid firm basket with no raw edges on the surface than this method works great!

If you find a #8 rope. That is equivalent to 1/4".

Supply list:
- 1/4" (.6cm) cotton clothesline rope. I used about 52' (16 metres) for the basket in this video.
- metal clips that will fit over 1/4" (.6cm) rope
- fabric scissors
- lots of sewing thread that will match the color of your fabric
- lots of bobbins with thread that will match the color of your fabric
- 1 metre of quilting cotton fabric in your choice of color
- sewing machine
- cutting mat
- rotary cutter
-omnigrid ruler
- piece of cardboard to wrap up prepared fabric strips
- 4 sewing pins
- needle and thread for sewing the last circle to the basket

Just starting my rope basket! Thanks for the excellent tutorial. I would say, however, this is not for beginners or those in a hurry to make a project! It takes patience and some prior knowledge of sewing, and a good, heavy-duty sewing machine sure helps.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, this basket is more time consuming then my other rope bowl tutorials because of the continuous fabric strips. But this technique sure makes a super solid strong basket.
That's a really, cute bowl/basket! I think I will make a piece the size of the bowl opening to use as a lid to cover the top of the bowl. I can attach it to the top by joining the two pieces together with about 3 inches of stitching on the edges. I'll make a small side loop on the edge of the lid so that it would hang down over the side of the bowl. Then add a large toggle or flat button to the side which will allow me to close the container. It would make a great house warming gift if made in the color scheme of the recipient's kitchen. Just roll up some dish towels, bar towels, hand cream, jewelry holder, etc., then put them into the bowl and present it to the host. I love all the projects I've seen since subscribing, but this is my favorite so far. Thanks for sharing!

Many ways of doing it. But this method will make a nice firm basket with no raw edges.

I love your teaching and I am going to use this method but do it in an oval shape start so I can end up making a Doll bassinette, If I understand right to make the hood of the bassinet I would build up by that particular end in the same wrapping method. Your awesome. I would love to see a video of you making a Doll Bassinette if you could just for fun. God Bless
Cute idea to make a dolls bassinet. Once you have the height you want you could just go back and forth just on the one end until you have your partial hood. Lots of ideas to add to my list. I’m back into painting for a bit. You never know what I will be up to next.

Thanks for showing this! I learned to make the raw edge type a number of years ago and have to say I didn't keep the basket. I like the look of the finished edge!
Perfect! Lots of different ways to add the fabric for different looks. Cutting the fabric strips on the bias works really well too! I have a video on that as well.

So much work for a Beautiful bowl
Yes, this type of wrap for a bowl is the most labor intensive but it creates a very sturdy durable bowl. I have other rope bowl videos that show different ways of cutting the fabric and wrapping the cord.

Thank you for sharing your expertise. You are a wonderful teacher and your videos are so easy to follow. I’m wondering why the strips for this project aren’t cut on the bias. Is that because you’re folding the edge over?
The strips are folded so no raw edges are shown so I did not cut these strips on the bias. For single strands not folded over than I cut them on the bias.
This technique foe the basket makes a real sturdy basket.

A lazy Susan is a life saver in this type of wrapping.
I’m not sure where the lazy Susan would help with this type of rope bowl made on the sewing machine but if it helps you then by all means.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts You put both the “balls” (cord and fabric) on the lazy Susan and turn it around. It “unturns” the cords. I used one when I was knitting a jacquard sweater.

Do you mean how do I line the inside of the bowl with fabric? If so, than I don’t usually but lining on the inside of the bowl. I like to just see the rope design.

Jelly rolls are 2.5” wide and I cut my strips 1.25” wide so you could just cut your jelly strips right down the middle!

This type of fabric wrap makes for a very strong bowl. Glad you love it!
I am excited to make these, however my first needle broke and my replacement needle won't go through the cord easily. Should I use a heavy duty needle and thread? Or is my machine not sturdy enough to sew through it? My cord is standard craft cord from Joann's. 6mm, 95% cotton and single layer fabric strips.
Note sure what type of craft cord you are using. I use laundry sash cord. 1/4”. Denim needles will work the best.

In the video I did not but soon learned that it is best to cut your fabric on the bias. So much easier when you have some give with the fabric.

Thank you so much for the excellent video! I have this picture in my head of using just the rope at the bottom of the basket and finishing the top with outdoorsy-colored fabric-covered rope. The idea is to be able to stencil bear silhouettes around the bottom of the basket. What would be the best way to transition from plain rope to rope covered with fabric?
So many wonderful designs and ways to decorate our rope baskets. I think If you want to leave the bottom plain for stencilling then I would add fabric to the rows that are starting your sides at the bottom and then leave some rows plain with no fabric then add fabric again and leave your handles plain with no fabric to match the bottom. Just an idea for you.

I’ve seen a few videos bfor I jump in to my project , most of them tell you to cut fabric on bias . I noticed you didn’t or did I miss that part ? Seems to me it would stretch better on the bias what’s your opinion?
Yes you are correct. I didn’t do that in my first videos but all my other rope bowl videos talk about cutting the fabric on the bias.

You can use a regular needle if that is all you have but I like to use a leather or a denim needle for a little extra strength.

As long as it holds the two ropes together you are set to go.

How do you stop the fabric from fraying , I used a cotton fabric,, you have ni frayed edges.
On this particular rope bowl I have sewn all the strips together as well as folding the strip so there are no raw edges on the surface.
Patti, Great tutorial. A question for you could you use leather? It would add a great look.
You could try and use vinyl that looks like rawhide. It’s thinner than actual leather and easier for wrapping with. Real leather will be thick for the sewing machine to sew through. That might work better with a hand sewn bowl.
Can you use these for hot pads when cooking?
Yes, you could place a dish of food in them to serve at the table if you wanted.
so the fabric strips do not have to be cut on the bias?
This method of wrapping uses quite a bit of fabric and easier to cut the strips with the grain and not necessary to cut on the bias. But cutting on the bias does give more stretch and makes it a bit easier to wrap your rope. This wrapping technique makes a real strong sturdy basket. Being as there are no raw edges open you have a clean edge with no ravelling. If I am doing a basic wrap with fabric then I will cut bias strips to help reduce frayed edges.

Hi Patti, Have you any tips on preventing the twisting of the rope and strips of fabric, I have done the fabric strips as you have and put it on a cardboard but I am having to sew a bit, take it out of the machine to untwist then do a bit more. I have a ball of rope on a spool at the top of the machine at the moment.

In each of these videos have tips and tricks.
I like to unravel the cord first and then wrap into a ball. I place it in one of my rope bowls on the floor at my feet. It’s much easier to wrap the cord that way. And you can turn the bowl on the floor to keep the cord from twisting.
Can you use flannel strips
In my opinion they would be too thick. A thin cotton material is best.
I'm new to this. Is this kind of sewing hard on your machine? I have a baby lock machine, however, I have an older brother. Do I need an industrial type machine?

Did you bring the basket straight up when you are happy with the bottom for did you go up more gradually like you did with the rope basket?
I did bring it straight up but if you want a more rounded bottom than you can go up gradually.

I figured it out! Use 100.
I generally use a leather or jeans needle.

I have done a few different rope bowl tutorials. The first ones I did I just cut basic strips and that works fine but it is much better to cut the fabric on the bias as the material does not fray on the edges very much and there is more stretch to the fabric and easier to wrap the rope with. So yes, cut the fabric strips on the bias. I now have a video showing how to cut fabric strips on the bias.

I use polyester thread because I find it stronger.

Hi Patti... I stated a basket, got the bottom nice and flat, thanks to your tips, but when trying to get the sides to actually form, I’m having a problem. I’m holding the base up next to machine but I’m only getting a very slight change. I think I’m just going to be making placemats at this point. Any suggestions? Oh dear. Once you get the hang of it you will all set. Trying bringing the cord that is in your right hand a little higher than the bed of your sewing machine until you see the sides forming.

Any sewing machine. Doesn’t have to be a fancy machine. As long as it will do a wide zigzag stitch and you can raise your presser foot high enough for the rope to fit under.
