  • In this video jeweller and diamond setter Niels van Dooren setting 2 mm (0.03 ct) white loupe clean diamonds in a yellow gold wedding band. The diamonds are all exactly measuring 2 mm to create this smooth pattern. The use of Micro Pavé Technique creates a unique ring.
    The diamonds each weigh approximate 0.03 ct and are hold with shared prongs. By creating seats with a carbide round bur you can see the distance from another. Afterwards a bright cut is created with a 60 degree carbide graver which was high gloss polished. These are polished with ceradent polishing wheels. Furthermore tiny prongs are created by removing excess metal with a flat graver into the seat. Then, gently the diamonds are put in place into the ,relatively soft, yellow gold. With a tiny prong pusher the golden prongs are bent over the diamonds thereby holding tightly two diamonds at the same time.
    The ring was later polished with high gloss diamond polish.
    All in all this was a beautiful ring to work on.

    I have been a professional diamond setter for over forty years and this is not pave it is in fact called bead setting. Why don’t you drill through and azure the back of the holes? How can the diamonds get cleaned without the holes being drilled thru? Just sayin.

    • @heinikendude
      @heinikendude  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Joe, let's agree to disagree. I think this is micro pave and as for the holes through the back, this is not necessary. As I believe grease and moisture can only get trapped between the finger and the cullet of the diamond that way. As for Azure.. I would love if there was time for that. Also it does something with the strength of the ring. Therefore I would not recommend it.

      He uses a beading tool, the only reason the diamond sticks on is because some setters will lick the tip of the beading tool to pick up the diamond. You can also use a beeswax dop stick, it's just a little messy, but you can clean it up after

    Are you only using a ball burr to cut the seat for the diamond? I normally use a ball burr to get the hole close to the size then use a heart burr to cut the seat. I see a lot of videos where it looks like just a ball burr is used. It seams like you have more control over the height of the stone with this method. If you are what size burr compared to the stone? TIA

  • @apeople
    @apeople 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I notice that in this video you drill to a shallow depth where most videos I see drill all the way through the metal while paving, what are the pros and cons and when should one drill or not drill all the way through the material?

    • @heinikendude
      @heinikendude  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi A people, that is correct, I do not drill completely through the metal.
      Main reason is because a good cut and high quality diamond shines and reflects light in itself. So there is absolutely no need for a hole. Also I believe that these tiny hole cut through are just a place for dirt to form and pile up. And on a side note these solid rings are obviously a bit stronger and will last longer ;-)

      Hi Kajfasz, You're correct! The hole should be no bigger than the diamond itself.
      If you do flush setting start with 1.9 mm burr and be very careful.

    How secure is pave setting compare to prong setting?

    • @heinikendude
      @heinikendude  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rico, pavé setting is definitely more delicate compared to prong setting. As the tiny prongs are relatively small compared to the traditional prong setting. However for some types of jewellery it can be very beautiful and also safe. So it depends a lot on the design ;-)

    So I must ask.... Is the reason you skip over your hole in the beginning to get the set going? Then pressure takes the rest of the way?

    If i may ask
    Whats the measurement you take between each mark before you set 2mm stone here?
    Also what is the size of the prongs before 'curling' it ?
    Im trying to figure how tiny it is;)

    • @heinikendude
      @heinikendude  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Cornball, the marks are 2mm. So the same size as the actual diamonds. As for the prongs I estimate that these are 0.3 to 0.4 mm each
