- Ford Australia developed this impressive SUV from its Falcon BA platform, including the legendary Barra engine (turbo an option, but not in this one). I was very pleased to subject one to a road test. Recorded in February 2020, in Victoria, Australia.

I own a 2009 SY TS AWD, bought it in 2010 and still own it. 13 years on and 385,000kms still drives exceptionally well. Always a pleasure to drive. Showing a few wear signs in the interior but who wouldn’t at 385,000kms. She’s had a hard life as we’re on a farm and it hasn’t had an easy life. Shame ford stop building these.
Bought one in 2006 when I moved to AUS from the UK and kept it for seven years. One of the best cars I've ever owned. Still miss it.

In Australia, the "back back" seats (3rd row) are occupied by kids on the way to sport on the weekend, or Adults on a Winery tour weekend. Great size for kids, and on a winery tour, those in the back back row usually don't care based on the amount of wine consumed at a day's worth of tasting. :D
Our twins 'owned' the third row until they were about 15. Like a frog in a saucepan... We thought about updating a few years ago and found many seven seaters are quite cramped in the third row. A Kluger/Highlander or Hyundai or Kia would be the best to replace like with like but get a better third row. Hyundai and Kia don't have the same view out, though.

Thanks for posting!! The Ford Territory was the "last hurrah" for Ford Australia; they had a target segment (Australian families) and went all out to design, develop, test, build and market a winner for that segment. By contrast, the Holden Adventra was an insipid response, adding AWD and some cladding to their existing station wagon / estate wagon. Ford walked away from that market success when they closed local manufacturing, they had nothing else in their global portfolio that came close to the Territory.
You've been a life saver with your videos over Lockdown, for our 7 year old son. He is obsessed with you and HubNut! Cheers dude. Gives me an hour, when I can keep up my guitar practice! (I'm a classical guitarist, with calendar wiped obviously with Covid, but still need to do my 3 hours!)

Ironically, the model Territory reviewed probably had the most colours available. Several shades of bright green and blue, orange, red, the copper colour reviewed, and the usual champagne, grey, silver white and black.
The colours choices became less bold as the Territory progressed through the years.

I have an 06 territory Ghia, AW D, best car I've ever owned
178,000 sold seems fairly successful in a country with a population of 25 million. That's one Ford Territory for every 140 people.
They were sold in other markets too not just oz
When Ford AU design team went to Dearborn HQ with a large clay model of the first prototype with cap in hand begging for the money to build the car, apparently the Ford HQ team clapped after the presentation (apparently that was a VERY rare occurrence) they were very impressed with this car.
In the US they had the Ford Freestyle from 2005 - 2009. Very similar styling, but completely different mechanically.
@@batguano6 they definitely liked the Territory styling in Detroit! But it does seem like something was lost in translation. Toyota styled the original Toyota Fortuner off the Territory. Basically a Hilux with a Territory rear end. They used the Toyota Australia designers, so it does actually look right!
Steven Lyndon Hi Steven, I had not heard of the freestyle before your reply. I see the styling is very close on the rear 3/4 . I know the Duratec 3.0 is a good engine (its in almost everything from Jaguars to UK Fords -(Mondeo ST220)to many US Ford products so it must be good) but the Aussie 4.0 L straight 6 twin cam is an awesome unit.

The Ford FLEX is fairly popular in my area, and when I was passed by a FLEX this morning my thought was that the car would have been a bit more interesting if it had had a longitudinal instead of transverse engine so that V6 and V8s could have been offered. The Territory seems to be quite close to what I was thinking of.
@@howardkerr8174 We rented a Flex on a US visit, It was much longer! The Territory is a fraction shorter than my Magna (Diamante) sedan.
I had two Territory's as childhood cars, first a 2004 TS RWD in gold, and second a 2014 Titanium petrol RWD. I hated riding in the back of them, but my parents loved them.
2007 SY TS AWD, 240,000km. After 13 years of ownership it's still going strong, drives very well, no major reliability issues and we love it. There is nothing on the market now that combines all the virtues of the Territory. Space, performance, ride, steering and smart design features. We'll hang on to it until it dies and that won't be for a while.
When it does fix it. Or sell to someone who will. Try to save it from a scrapper

Very popular car in Australia long production run so right for Aussie families and very comfortable cars have family & friends with territories all happy with them very heavy on suspension components especially bushes and the seats like you were having trouble with are very user unfriendly I say that as I’m a car detailer and cleaned many territories not all were seven seaters as it was an option there was the territory turbo option for a while too loved to have one of them some have been converted to V8 I’ve been enjoying your Aussie car reviews so many memories all good ones too,
pete smyth I should I’m imagine I had a 2009 FG g6e it needed suspension work just before i traded loved the car though,
@pete smyth I had a 2007 that handled like a pig out of the showroom, it spent more time at the dealers than on the road in the six months I had it, ended up swapping it for a new Subaru at the same dealer. A pity because I really liked the styling but my kids could not travel in the second row seats without getting carsick, on a straight road. I think there was eventually a recall to replace front control arms that changed the geometry somehow.

Thirty-five percent of the Territory's equipment came from the BA Falcons of the day. Mostly the engine and gearbox equipment and some of the interior gear. It has a better turning circle than even the Falcon, and holds the road better in AWD form (I've owned a BA Falcon wagon, BA Fairmont Ghia sedan and an SX Territory Ghia [my current driver] so I know). This vehicle was NOT designed to be a serious off-roader. It was meant to be the replacement for the Falcon wagon (which, as it turned out, didn't have its production stopped for a few years yet) and so is really an all-wheel-drive crossover wagon, not really an SUV.

We had a 2008 model for many years and sold it after 330,000 Km. Still drove and ran like new but we did service it regularly.
Red cover for turbo, green for lpg and silver for n/a!

Not sure if you would test one but Citroen nailed the rear seat arrangement in the first generation C4 Picasso. Totally flat load area when the seats are down, scissor lift middle seats to get in the rears, three independent middle seats that can be moved to any position and all a doddle to use 👍

To be fair, I think a lot of design work had gone into the practicality of these. Great option for camping trips.
Good vehicles and a positive review. Thank you. One thing they were widely used for was towing boats and caravans. An old rough rule was for every 10 cubic inches of engine equated to 1 foot of towable length. Braked trailer is rated at 2300 kg for this model year and 2700 for the 2015 one.
i know Im digging up a old post, the 2.3T towing was standard for all models bar the AWD diesel territory which had the 2.7T towing limit

I know the Territory well, my dad had a white one in South Africa with the 24v Barra, it was really cool! I loved it, very popular there too. Great video, definitely a Ford version of the XC60. Great test!

Bit of body roll.
Ball joints and suspension bushes need to be maintained fairly regularly, but it is a fairly sophisticated rear end.
Plenty of usable power.
Good ground clearance.

When i visited the UK last year I saw a Ford Territory on the M25 near Heathrow much to my astonishment. God knows how it got there.
Maybe the Australian embassy (high commissioner) given it was on the road to Heathrow;; Australia for many years had a policy of using Australian made cars for its embassies in countries that drove on our side of the road.

3:55 The introduction of the ZF was one of the reasons I waited to get an SY series, as the SX series used the four-speed across the range. 5:10: at launch, the tray immediately below the HVAC controls was sized to fit a tissue box; sadly, that size box is no longer available. 😢 5:35: may be a few spare fuses stored there! 🤣 6:15: ah! INXS! After the foreshadowing. 😁 6:25: the orange plastic case in the glove compartment contained the owner's manual and service book. 6:50: Ford must have agreed - pedal adjustment was deleted later on, at least for the base models. 7:35: handbrake level was originally plastic, but it started to disintegrate and was replaced with a used leather one from a Ghia. 9:10: Hill-descent was an option I didn't tick, but it would have meant removal on the one blanked switch on the dash. 10:40 third-row cubbies later got deleted in favour of open holes that were less comfortable for elbows. 11:25 this is the side one would normally use in our market where driving is on the left. The seat stops at half tilt for entry and exit and the seat position lock is also disengaged at this position. 12:00: firm seating pays off on long trips! 12:10: did the 12V socket ever survive from having its cap broken off? 14:10 so glad that Ford allowed both the glass and the tailgate to be open at once without touching the antenna! 14:40: those seat runners have not coped well with years of dust accumulation! (To say nothing of the plastic Ford used for the release handle.) 15:10 flappy panel is meant to spring down but the plastic underside has separated slightly from the fabric and catches in the centre. Didn't mention that; wasn't expecting Ian to succeed with folding the third row! Flatness is good with second and third rows down. Removal not an option per design intent. 15:50: had to confirm the mystery switch. It isolates the reversing sensors for when towing. Forgot it was there, and just put up with the beeps! 17:05: rear wiper has skipped since new. 😩 17:25 hill descent obviously not fitted! 22:35: door card - plastic welding fails internally. Extra screws only helped for a little while. 🤦
I take it you've had the car since new? Mine was a one-owner but I never got to talk to the first owners about their experience with it, I'd be interested to know how it's treated you over the years. I imagine it's done alright if you've kept it all this time! :)
@@Wolf1ekun I tend to hang on to my cars... Drivetrain hasn't skipped a beat and feels like it shall run forever. Front suspension has been redone recently (never had any recall action) and rear shall need attention sometime soon. Interior has more concerns with one tailgate actuator failing, power window window switches needing de-pitting, door card plastic panels separating (plastic welds failed), handbrake lever disintegrating (replaced with leather one from a Ghia) and seat release handles failing from brittleness. All four tailgate hinges also replaced! Package is great, especially for a 2004 design; just the implementation is a letdown. My Magna has a similar mileage (170,000 km) and feels like its new inside and out.
Stephen Dixon sounds like it’s done fairly well! I’ve had a few Falcons, never really had any drivetrain issues and I do love the old straight 6. Same thing happened to my handbrake cover, and I’m unsure what was done before I bought it, but the tailgate glass hinges have dropped a little and I’m mindful that they may need to be replaced soon. I bought mine with 227k on it, and the interior was immaculate - when I had it roadworthied I was told the front diff bushes had been done and the front suspension had been looked after as well. It’s now sitting on 276,000km and has given me little trouble. I’m hoping to keep it for a fair while longer, and it should see 300,000 by the end of the year.
@@Wolf1ekun Strongly recommend closing the tailgate by pushing in the centre, not to one side! 😋 And perhaps make sure the main tailgate hinges are greased.

The ZF transmission was offered as an option on lower-spec Falcons & Territories from around 2006 onwards, and was standard on the high-spec Ghia models. It wasn't until 2010 that the ZF was included as standard equipment across all models.
the 6speed RWD with the Barra wasn't offered untill the SZ model in 2011, all previous RWD Territory's only had the 4 speed auto.
Well that seems a very practical vehicle. Lots of toys and fixtures to play around with...

I've been thinking about buying one of these old Territorys. This is the only video I need to watch.
Alpha Omega do so at your own caution: the SX and SY models can have catastrophic front suspension failure at the ball joint, and if that happens while driving at speed then you might have a very bad accident. I suggest buying SYII and up, but if that isn’t an option, fitting SYII suspension to an SX/SY is a good alternative. SZ/SZII suspension also can be retrofitted (it’s the same as SYII but there is a slight difference somewhere), but it’s just easier going for the SYII route. I do highly suggest buying a TTG, though - even if they only came out in the SY years - just replace the front suspension and you’re good. Great SUV, loaded with a Barra Turbo, and it’s AWD! Perfect for the road and decent off-road if you know what you’re doing.

SUVs aren’t generally my thing, but I like this. Neatly styled, great sounding engine, decent handling and performance by the looks, very practical. Much to like and this looks a well cared for example. Yes, to colours on cars! My two are blue and orange. Like you I’m tired of seeing 50 shades of grey on our roads (at least here in the UK). Thanks for reviewing the Territory. A massive success for Ford Australia, yet very underrated by many in their market.
We have a later model 2015 Territory TX AWD 5-seater with the 2.7 diesel (second last year of the Territory), and our family loves it. The diesel engine produces power so quietly and effortlessly, and is well matched to the 6-speed auto. I'm looking at replacing our other car, a 13-year old Toyota Aurion, with another Territory soon, theyre excellent value for money IMO.

Nice work HubNut. The "Tory" was exceptionally smart use of plant. I loved the RHD UR Explorer, but the Territory is the whole package. Edsel Ford II always wanted Ford worldwide to zone in on a Range Rover style SUV. That car was the Early Bronco, 66 to 78, which Ford failed to develop. The Tory is a four door Rangie close coupled. It has the same dynamic excellence. Spen King led the way others were to follow. Lovely report Sir!

When Ford announced its closure, it was like something entirely unimaginable to our generation. Soon we realised. The game was up, and soon Holden and Toyota followed.
Yes, and the Holden brand was killed off while I was in Australia. Not pleasant news.
The decision was in part based on the exchange rate aud usd 1/1.30 now it 's less than 0.70/1.00 and at the end both Holden and Falcon were really good cars.
After multiple Falcon I was looking for a SUV and decided in 2019 to buy a 2006 Territory. Because you can repaire and service a Ford and a Ford 6 Zylinder in Australia all over the place cheap and easy, the technic is unbreakable (from the weight the front ball joints break often), and the 2006 modell has a few beginning problems fixed, and has still not all the modern stuff who makes only trouble. Finally Ford realised coil springs on the back axle. Falcons with leave springs are in a bad situation if you want to tow something like a caravan. So I got heavy duty springs for 350 bucks include installing. Typical Ford permanent small things break like the lock on the flap on the dashboard. You get cheap a Bluetooth modul to plug in to hear music from mobile. Wiperwashers (typical Ford) are not to adjust and the water sprays useless on the front window frame (you can adjust them with sticking something underneaths). The rear wiper often doesn't works because the back window hinges gives up often and the wiper is controlled from the central locking system. Is the boot door or the window in the boot door not proper adjusted the rear window won't work and Ford ask for 700 Dollar for another wiper motor you don't need. Typical Ford. BUT FINALLY you have head lighst you can see the road. The Gearbox is like in the falcon anoying. The germany gearbox is good for the german autobahn but not good for the australian roads. It change gears to late up or down so you'll drive always in the wrong revs searching for power. The engine loves low revs and the german gearbox loves high revs. It never fits. Power is anyway such a thing with the 6 Zylinder. A lot of Power on paper but you have to search for it on the road and often enough you need run off to come a hill up if you tow a trailer. But if you drive normal and be carefull with using the speed (stay between 1500 and 2000 revs) you can drive (I do) the car with less 10 Liter per 100km. estrem economical for a 2 tonne heavy SUV. But if you speed up .... you have to pay for it with double usage. The later Turbo Diesel was a nightmare. Big problems. And the later Territorys had head lights you couldn't see the road (like the Falcons) and had a lot of modern electronic that was always not working. Driving a Ford is like walking with a stone in your shoe. You never break down but there is always something. The later Territory models are bad. Too much technic Ford couldn't handle. Usual problem with territory is water in the car after rain, coming in at the rear windows left and right collecting behind the driver seat on the floor, and the window on the boot door, collecting in the door panel and splash on your head if you open the boot door.. Ford ...... The car is build like a tank - indestructible. But in details ..... it's a Ford and there is always something broken or rattling or .... "only" not working. I love the car and I'm happy to get a 2006 modell.

Reminds me of our beloved Territory again with what may be a feature on other cars but I haven't come across it.
After using washer function that uses 4 or 5 sweeps of the wipers, it then pauses for about 3 seconds and then does a single wipe just to clean up the inevitable dribble!
The Territory is probably the most appropriate car for driving long distances in Australia. The first several years did have a lot of issues with ball joints, but otherwise a tough car
Love our 2015 Terri which is also very Falcony on the inside.
2.7L turbo diesel is the one to go for.
Great for towing our van and very torquey and can go like a scalded cat.
It boasted 27 separate storage areas.
Ours is a 5 seater with cavernous rear boot space.
But don't ever try to raise the underslung spare back into place!
In Australia, it is commonly referred to (and not just by owners) as the "much love Territory". Sad that they don't make them any more.
I can definitely see a relationship between the styling of this vehicle and the current model US Ford Explorer, so popular with police as the Police Interceptor Utility...
I'll bet this felt more composed on the road than your current Delica, which is basically a van plonked on a Shogun chassis...

Been thinking of picking one of these up to replace my BA XR6 recently. They're very cheap these days, and it would be nice to be able to go more places than the Falcon can go. You mentioned in the video about the engine cam cover colours, Red = turbo (forged pistons), Green = LPG (forged pistons and slightly different compression ratio), and Silver = standard Barra (no forged pistons).
I’ve been waiting for this video! I adore my Territory, I also have an SY TX AWD (sadly in boring silver) but I’ve swapped out the interior for a later model black leather one. The 6-speed gearbox is a gem, and as you said it feels very different to the 4-speed and I think it’s much better suited to the engine. The Barra 190 has a nice muted growl that I really enjoy - it’s a tad nicer sounding than the BA engine (different compression ratio and different exhaust). That curvy road is one of my favourites in the area, it’s a good bit of fun! Glad you enjoyed your Territory experience.

6:19. The One Thing, by INXS. I was a fan - still am. I was never into SUVs, but I was given a Demo Territory to drive around in for a week, while my new Falcon ute was having the tray and ladder racks fitted. Ended up liking the Terri, and being not sure about giving it back. It was a candy metallic red colour.

I can tell you that the pedal adjustment is worth it for short people such as myself, that along with the seat height and steering wheel adjustment makes ot a much smoother ride for someone who is 5'3"

Glad you like it HubNut. The Territory was a game changer when released and was purposely engineered to give SUV practicality with the driving/comfort level of the classic Aussie sedan. It absolutely murdered the Landcruiser/Prado/Pajero in terms of sales as they were fantastic suburban SUVs. Unfortunately Ford never further developed the platform over it's lifespan, the final 2016 variants had evolved little from 2004. Note third row was never intended for adult seating, they were for pre-teens so you correctly guessed it's for kids back here..

I have owned my 2005 SY TS ( Middle of the range ) 2WD only 4speed since 2007.
My prior vehicle was a 1992 Commodore VP Berlina.
As i am on the large size at 1.9M tall and 140kg i need a roomy car, surprisingly most large cars dont have any head room and the doors are not that large.
current fashion of a very slopped back windscreen and doors that are "rounded at the top" are actually smaller, and harder to get in to , also you tend to bang the top of your head o the roof line.
A good example is when yo compare the second generation commodore VN-P-R-S to the next release Vt, the car is on the outside similar, but in effect smaller on the inside.
When i was buying the car, i just gave up and had a small tape measure and the first thing i dont was measure the seat base to the top of the door opening, most large cars was about 28 inches, the teritory almost 36 from memory - more room than a land cruiser and pagero
Anyway , enough of me. My wife is more smaller in size and she has not problem driving the car.
From the seat forward you will never pick that it is a larger car, it does drive as simple as a normal sedan, the seat position is upright and you have a excellent field of vision, you can crank back the seat for a more relaxed ride in you like.
Steering / ride / handling is 99% falcon, but the extra ride height gives is a better larger pot hole smooth ride.
I actually wanted the burnt orange / mango colour and the 7 seater but it was sold at the time, the only other 7 seater was a ugly green and yuck lemon colour.
I ended up with the normal 2wd and 4 speed auto TS middle of the range in black.
The TS has colour coded bumpers, 17 inch mag wheels, 6 stacker CD , and climate control., the heater controls are different to the one shown here.
So what is good about it - everything.
What has gone wrong in 15 years - almost nothing, drivers regular went wonky in year 2 ($300)
bonnet release cable ugrade to revised version @ $30
front brake pads changed at 80k
front tyres at 90k
all 4 tyres are 150k
passenger window went wonky but that was fixed with some plastic horse shoe clips @ $40
front tie rod ends - yes the passenger snaped in 2019 $ 350 for both
I service the car at least 3 times a year
Interestingly i still "brag" that the brake fluid and radiator coolant has never been changed, from day 1 the temperature guage sits at about 40% hot normally and in the hotest summer it hits 49% - i have never seen it hit 1/2 mark
The car is outside working hours and garaged or under the carport at home, it has zero rust and the paint is as new, headlights crystal clear, interior is still as new, but the headliner is starting to sag as it is only glued to the cardboard roof backing - typical of cars @ 1997-2010 in australia parked outside the sun bakes and dries the glue
Braking is excellent and even in the wet at 70 kph it can stop in its own lane in about 2 car lengths
At this stage i will probably never sell it, and will keep it as a spare car, for a replacement i will probably buy one of the last 2015-2016 and hope that lasts just as well for 15 years.
I must say the turbo diesels for me are a dog, i dont drive fast or race every set of light, but the 2 territories that i have drive that were diesel drove yuck, very slow on take of and take a long time to spool up for be any where near as responsive as the petrol engine - actually my wifes 2005 Lancer auto is faster, they are so sluggish that you need to wait for a break in traffic if you want to merge lanes from standing start or drive across a intersection that only has give way or stop signs.
Fuel economy on the main roads is good, non-traffic i get 450-520k's per tank , and in city start stop traffic is get 350/380/400 if lucky - i average 9-11 litres per 100 k's in express road, and 13 litres per 100k's in traffic. Generally is is about 24mpg and it does not drink that much stuck in sydney traffic - the prior XD 4.1 litre 6 that i had was as firstly as a V8 is gave about 280/300 k;s per tank ( 60-65 litres ) and never done better than 16/17mpg, the same as the 2 x 4.9l 302 V8's
As a note the first cheap fuel 6 cylinder i had was a VL commode with the nissan 6, next came the VP commodore with the 3.8 buick based V6 - both of those cars were @ 22-25mpg, the territory has a larger engine and much heavier car, and more power yet has almost the same fuel economy. 250 HP and 24mpg is amazing, 60's and 70's v8's has the same power and if you used all the grunt you got 10-12mpg
My son did buy one 3 years ago, and sold it 2 months ago, but unfortunately his was a bit of a lemon, but most of the problems were the prior owner who only ever placed fuel in the car - this is a major issue that some cars are so reliable that people dont look after them, they will still run great 5 to 8 years then start to fall apart

Sounds good, George. I'd suggest making sure the transmission oil is changed regularly, and there may be some rust beneath the tailgate rubber seal. I didn't mind the burnt lemon colour (Blaze), but all of the out-there colours were gone by the time I got the SY. I was prepared to get one built to order rather than go for an example off the showroom floor. A nice luxury to have if you can wait! Probably gone now with no more local production.
@@steved3702 Hi Stephen. n the normal service i have the fluids checked, brake fluid is done with some gadget - i think it checks for moisture - not sure.
Auto was drained at the 80k major service or then the tyres or brakes were done, the oil came out beautiful blood red, as the car had about 12k on the clock and i have known my mechanic for a long time we knew it was factory, it was checked due to age and also in case of the radiator issue with collapsing and mixing water with the radiator coolant, but touch wood all good.
Rear tailgate is good, but there the 2 parts of the rubber join on the base there is a rough scaly patch, but it was like that at 2 years old and has not changed.

The press kit I have for my XV10 Camry has both a Mac formatted 3.5” floppy and a 5.25” PC floppy. It amazes me that a press kit that recent (in the grand scheme of things) still had a floppy disk within!

The "mysterious button" mentioned at 15:56 is likely a disable switch for the reverse sensors when towing a trailer, it's a common issue known to Territory owners, plenty on Google if you want to look it up.
I like how un falcon like this variant of the platform looks. It's good that Ford Australia got the chance to build it. I bet Holden was envious.
From what I recall, the Territory is the reason that Holden rushed the underdeveloped Adventra (jacked-up Commodore wagon) into production. It failed (though I wouldn't mind picking up a V8 version now as a bit of a future oddity of growing rarity...). The supposed failing of Ford with the Territory was its refusal to offer a diesel until the later series - meanwhile it was increasingly overlooked by suburbanites wanting better mpg from their soft-roaders. Personally I can't fault a company for refusing to offer an oil burner...
@@johnphaceas7434 I was assigned a V8 Adventra as a duty officer unit (ambulance). Tried to drive it hard, but the suspension was too sloppy for high speed suburban (stop-start, turning often) response driving.
@@coover65 What state was that? Surprising choice for the Ambos non-meatwagons and I certainly don't recall seeing any here in WA (I think they used Subaru Foresters and Falcon wagons). And yep, they were a total flop - rushed out before they were ready. But I still like the idea of one (bad as it may be) as a collectible oddity. And shouldn't be too hard to upgrade the suspension to make it a bit more competent. However it will have to wait behind about ten other cars I have on my "gonna get one" list....
I think that mystery switch in the back is the "Self Destruct" switch, best leave that one be... :P
LOL, I think it's a fuel pump cut off switch but who knows.
@@nakoma5 so you can accidentally knock it whilst changing a tyre. Then spend 3 hours at the side of the road trying to work out how the hell a flat tyre breaks the engine?
An override to deactivate the reversing sensors for trailer use. The factory towing loom had this switch built into the trailer plug. These sensors were aftermarket.
Did you mean "self destruct" as applied to Ford Australia?
The switch in the back by the jack is to deactivate the rear parking sensors for when towing a trailer.
Unsurprisingly it reminds me of my Freelander 2.
I will be buying one in two weeks, the same but white and fitted with LPG
That whole back seat set up spoils what seems to be a decent car and a good alternative to the Volvo XC90, seems really relaxing to drive.

Great review Ian, have driven both the Barra and the V6 turbo diesel version, both powerful and torque engines, believe it or not these things weigh near 2.5 ton in AWD format. Know both those roads real well Glenfern rd Upwey, then right into Lysterfeld rd going toward Napoleon rd, when i was young was a favorite test track for our cars, back then was a narrow tight pot holed road mainly used by the local farmers for moving farm machinery between paddocks.
Napoleon Rd is the extension of Glenfern Rd after it crosses Lysterfield Rd. The
road that runs parallel to Glenfern Rd to the South is Wellington Rd where Ian turned right,

I was once "on a mission" coming back from Frankston in hurry. Coming around a bend there were linesmen and trucks everywhere and a very surprised flaggie. I did manage to pull up the Fuego right next to him...just facing the opposite way to the direction of travel! Bloody rear drums!!!

Very similar in appearance to the mid-2000s Ford Escape.
I too like those two tone colour schemes. Gloss grey plastic against a bright body colour is rather pleasing.

The Escape was called the Maverick or Mazda Tribute in the UK. The earlier Maverick was based on the Nissan Terrano.

SX used BTR 4 speed on all models. ZF transmission was introduced to AWD vaiants with SY update to reduce fuel consumption. Diesel came with the SZ in 2011 and use a Chinese 6SP transmission as to later model petrol in common with XGF non turbo.

Ian trying this in the video reminds me of my first inspection in a dealer showroom! I'm much more proficient now (and replacing the handle in the third-row backrest also helps!).
You could specify them without the 3rd row of seats which left 2 underfloor storage bins, one of them waterproof.
Also a hard folding luggage cover at window sill height.

Barra engine continued to evolve through to the final Falcon/Territory in 2016. In highest output guise, it maxed out at 325kW / 435.5hp in an FGX series Falcon XR6 Sprint.
My father bought one of these in 2011 to replace his shabby and worn out XF Falcon. The Territory has aged very well both inside and out. Very little wear and tear is evident despite having covered 156,000 km.
He is toying with the idea of purchasing a later model diesel Territory, but he's a lazy car buyer, and will probably put off the purchase until his current one is near death.
I had one of these a few years ago , there a bit heavy on the fuel consumption but overall a nice car

Love the headlights. Standard halogen bulbs, but they get a nice result. Probably necessary when you live in a country with kangaroos on the highway!
The third row of seats was an optional extra. Ford Australia closed their factories but kept the dealer network to sell and service cars. In comparison, Holden closed its dealer network and only provides some servicing facilities through other franchises.
I have been looking forward to this and was already surprised but also disappointed at myself for not seeing the Falcon front end...I also didn't know it was also based on the Falcon However also very sad that in the end it wasn't enough to keep Ford alive in Australia, maybe because not much was invested into by Ford itself to update the design as it should have...
Sadly ford had lost hope on the Australian production and was the first to pull out on it's own accord, even WITH government assistance....
Good thing though is that I've learned alot more about Australian cars than in 20 years living here....
Interesting car , I hadn't heard of before. Manufacturers should definitely bring back more colours 👍
