    Saw this production, notice the use of darkness in the staging it adds emphasis to the pure evil of Scarpia. Quite outstanding Tosca was the first opera I saw aged about 40 (71 now) at the ENO I was looking to move on from Rock and Roll, Folk and Jazz. That was all it took love at first sight and still very happy together.

    I really like Alexy Markov's voice in this clip because he can be clearly heard over the orchestra and choir. His tone is gorgeous, deep and melodic, the voice bang on the notes without the ambiguous warbling around them that so many other "Scarpias" do. This is the best Scarpia I have heard in ages.

    One of the most brilliant passages of music in Puccini's Canon.The rising intensity backed by the chorus never fails to excite.

      The evil toughts of Scarpia and one of the most solemn Catholic prayers, the "Te Deum"... together by the use of an ostinato of two notes. Indeed some of the most genius music pages ever written by Puccini!

    Masterpiece Opera so bloody so passionate so romantic, I think guys today should learn to love this fine musical art, I think the world would be better if Opera and classic music was brought to everybody in every country. This powerful piece of music and theatre should bring to tears everybody...and everybody should consider himself lucky for the priviledge to hear this music. Simply Powerful...thanks for the outstanding performance!

      Bryn Terfel - sorry - "Sir" Bryn Terfel might be a nice person but he can't sing Scarpia. His voice is lost in the orchestra and can't be clearly heard. He warbles around the notes, completely ruining the tremendous melody that Puccini wrote. His version of Scarpia seems to consist of looking ugly and grimacing! I was very disappointed in his performance.

    Bryn Trefel is the better actor... amazing how good he really is... But Still, one of the most amazing moments in all of Opera! Mr. Trefel played a slimy, evil toad of man whom it was easy to hate. When an actor can do that... just, wow, amazing!
    Glad I found this, what a contrast.

    I got to see the encore performance in cinemas, and it was wonderful. I hope they make it available on DVD like they did with the Bryn Tercel recording.

      You can purchase the DVD from the Royal Opera House online shop already ordered one starring Angela Gheorghiu as Floria Tosca with Sir Bryn Terfel as Baron Scarpia and Jonas Kaufmann as Mario Cavaradossi.

So, if we must endure another, it'd be nice if it had a fresh look or take. Unfortunately, this looks to be another status quo production of a tired classic. Pardon me for yawning.

    Don't like his Scarpia. I want a fuller baritone as in the old recordings such as Cornell MacNeil, Piero Cappucilli, Sherill Milnes and others of that ilk. My grandparents have all of their Scarpias and Alexy simply is not a good fit for me! Too light weight~!

  • @rosemaryallen2128
    @rosemaryallen2128 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    🎉This is always a difficult scene to stage, and whereas this set looked effective, the visual focus was on the celebration of the Te Deum, and not on Scarpia. This was made worse by the lack of light on him, which was realistic at the expense of the required dramatic focus. A pity, because it ought to be a shattering conclusion to Act One.
