Man I felt for Alaska, I lost my wife in 2017 and our 18month's old Lurcher was exactly the same to the point he would only sleep with his head on my chest or shoulder until very recently, we took a long time to heal. Stopping the build was the right thing to do, and it obviously was the right decision. Enjoying the content so far. A lot more polished than your first adventure.

as a vehicle dweller/nomad, I found that there's more interdependence between my family and I, for example I just had surgery, and recovering on the road wasn't a great option. So I've stayed at h my mom's house while recuperating. So grateful for parents, they are the best!

You have made the right decision but also the conversion of the van has allowed you having a beautiful quality time with your parents that will be in your memory forever. Even if you both have to cancel the expedition forever or just skip some countries and take the van directly from EU to Australia is a win win. Keep the dream alive but adjust it according to the most important things.

Love the idea of using the vinyl(!), but it would have scared me to bits doing that. I would have been afraid it would come out looking awful because it was so hard to do and all the mess-ups I'd make. You guys did a great job!! I'm glad it was easier than expected. When you were talking about it before you did it, I was actually feeling nervous about how many problems you could run into trying to get it on right! Eek. As far as standing in the van, a lot of times you will probably be barefoot, I think(?), so that will give you a tad more room. :)

My Korean wife and I go to visit her family every year in Korea. Just once, in 2013, I sent her alone to visit the family, while I stayed here in the U.S. The three week separation almost broke me, emotionally. I can't imagine how hard this months long separation must be for you two. Wishing you well, and a happy reunion.

Lots of pain but lots of gain. We are going through the same thing with our T3. We are now at the engine replacement part of things. We are installing a replacement Subie EG33 as the one that came with has blown head gaskets. Loving your journey and the Vinyl looks epic mate !
Ben, you have done the right thing. Relationships are the most important thing in our lives. Who we share our lives with and how, shape us and make our lives complete. Ok I get it ! Yes travelling around in an early camper is " cool " but what a price you are paying to do it ! If like me you had a T5 or even a Cargo you would be on your way already. Its not as if your playing at it given how far and how you have coped with problems. That's a very understandable decision. Don't worry, no one here is going to be mad about it. We're all here to see the two of you (+ Alaska) happy and excited to face the adventures ahead of you, so of course we'll support you when you seek those adventures out together, even if you don't do it the same way you usually would. :) We're not going anywhere, so take as much time together as you need! There's an old saying, "the perfect is the enemy of the good". Sure, on your first trip you underprepared. On this one you're overpreparing. At this rate you'll have a beautifully restored bus you can sell after everything else falls apart. Get it good enough and get going, or you'll never leave the dock. it's a common problem with sailors, happens all the time, guys spend years prepping for the big voyage, then the boat goes on the market.
After 5 years of living in a tiny and somewhat underprepared van - I'd like to ensure it is more comfortable for the next big adventure. Which will happen, mark my words :)

Make it safe and drivable, then enjoy it and play the long game on making it pretty. Give yourself a plan of action involving a project or two, then a trip or two! That's kind of how I'm approaching mine - 84 Westy - but it's tough actually going, lol.
Putting the van on hold is the right decision. You guys have to do this together. We've followed you both on this journey for so long and I cannot imagine how heartbroken you would be if you lost Leah.
I know the van is complete, but others may like to know , standing under the fan vent gives you 1-2" of extra standing head room. I placed mine where I stand to cook. Stratigicaly place it where you need the standing hight.
Exactly my point,....you will be driving, and then when you park,....pop up the top. Why do you need to stand up while moving?? Anyway,...the journey is as important as the destination, so wrap it up for this year, it's too late to beat the winter, have fun and relax.

Great stuff as always! Not sure how long ago this was recorded but wrapping the van up in that tarp will make it rust aka deteriorate A LOT quicker. The tarp makes it so that whats underneath can't breath as such trapping condensation build up. Combine that with a bit of sun and the heat up and cool down during the day in our humid climate and you have a perfect recipe for growing all sorts of fungus plus the trapped moisture will attack any and all sort of metal real quick. A cheap party tent would be my next best cheap option. If nothing else even just leaving it out in the weather would do less damage then the tarp. Just a heads up even though you might have found that out by now..

Putting the van on hold is the right decision. You guys have to do this together. We've followed you both on this journey for so long and I cannot imagine how heartbroken you would be if you lost Leah.
I know the van is complete, but others may like to know , standing under the fan vent gives you 1-2" of extra standing head room. I placed mine where I stand to cook. Stratigicaly place it where you need the standing hight.
Exactly my point,....you will be driving, and then when you park,....pop up the top. Why do you need to stand up while moving??
Anyway,...the journey is as important as the destination, so wrap it up for this year, it's too late to beat the winter, have fun and relax.

Great stuff as always! Not sure how long ago this was recorded but wrapping the van up in that tarp will make it rust aka deteriorate A LOT quicker. The tarp makes it so that whats underneath can't breath as such trapping condensation build up. Combine that with a bit of sun and the heat up and cool down during the day in our humid climate and you have a perfect recipe for growing all sorts of fungus plus the trapped moisture will attack any and all sort of metal real quick. A cheap party tent would be my next best cheap option. If nothing else even just leaving it out in the weather would do less damage then the tarp. Just a heads up even though you might have found that out by now..
