9 months ago I was told to extract two upper teeth and it was one of the worst decisions in my life. It caused my face to look sunk in, have no support, my upper lip disappeared and my nose looked bigger.
Today I had a consultation with another specialist orthodontist and I was told extractions was not necessary.
Worst mistake of my life getting extractions but I’m so happy I found a good specialist orthodontist to help fix this damage.

I’m so glad that I did my research! I went to one dentist and he immediately wanted to pull out all 4 premolars of my daughter, one never came in. I ended up finding you guys after calling about 10 orthodontist who didn’t take our insurance. My daughter started her treatment with you guys and will only need to get the 1 premolar out that never came in because it has no root. I am so glad I did my research because I was so against pulling any teeth out! She didn’t even have any crowding, she has gaps in all her teeth. It's not about "looking beautiful" - if you've had extractions and retractive orthdontics, that beautiful smile will fade quickly and it will show in your face and body. It's about the function of the jaws, the consideration of the airways, having adequate tongue space in order to function, rest, swallow.... The list goes on. That's exactly what the majority of orthodontists are, teeth beauticians - it's a beauty therapy which will affect your health. If they have a straight set of teeth, their job is done. They just aren't trained to look at WHERE those teeth are positioned in relation to the structures of the skull, spine, airways, tongue.... It's absolutely insane - it's like going to get your nails done at a beauticians, and them chopping a finger off because society says they "look better" that way, regardless if your hand can function properly or not.
Chinese foot binding still happens to this day, that is also wrong. Just because orthodontists still extract teeth for braces now - DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT.

I am 28. My upper incisors are slightly in a protruded position. My confidence to smile has always been an issue because of this. Recently I also felt like my face is becoming longer. I consulted an ortho and he instantly advised me to extract 4 premolars. He explained stuffs like my side profile issue and straight line alignment of face etc. But still, I was reluctant to remove my perfectly healthy teeth. I later went to another orthodontist and he did a scan of my mouth, cbct. He told teeth extraction is not required now, instead what I require is MSE expander as the upper palate of my mouth is smaller while compared to the lower one. That's probably the cause for my face getting slightly longer and also the reason for my mouth breathing. The orthodontist also told that after the removal of MSE, I will be given braces to fill up the space. If teeth extraction is still required, it could be considered way after that.

Just to share my own experience. I had four teeth extracted and traditional braces installed eight years ago . I underwent this procedure of pulling teeth backwards after extractions because the ortho explained the results would be best for my Protrusion. After five months of retraction, I suddenly hit a point where my jaws clicked, I felt foggy, my whole body ached and I cannot fully enter a restful body mode. I almost cant sleep with all the pains. It was chronic and nonstop. I had the braces removed immediately and though no one will believe me, I was all over my thoughts that it was due to the extraction and retraction that was done in my mouth. Although it was a relief that the spaces were not fully closed (my left extraction spaces almost halfway from closing), it was eight years of chronic pains that never went away fully. Aside from the elongation and flattening of my face (as per my observations), the chronic pains were the biggest toll for me. The first year after removal was the worst because I lost my ability to enter full sleep (even after drinking sleeping pills). I just prayed at night. Whenever I sit and stand, there is heaviness in my shoulder blades that is irritating and exhausting. I am always gasping for breath. I had my self checked by various doctors including a cardiologist just to hear I am perfectly fine when I am NOT really. Fortunately for me, the symptoms waned slowly over those 8 years with the help of massage and bone realignment (so your teeth is not JUST TEETH as my previous ortho pointed out. Your teeth may go a long way beyond just eating and smiling and I brag that it goes to prove the biggest link between beauty, the scientific measure of beauty if there really is, and your health/well-being). I was really thankful I believed in my guts to have it removed (though I really resented the damage I have done to myself with having consented to the "treatment"). The Biggest lesson in this is, BE CAREFUL. We have to evaluate carefully what we want done to our bodies especially when it comes to having ourselves possibly mutilated in the process. Some of our body parts never grow back and our lives, however it may seem pitiful to our own eyes or to the "better judgement" of others, is a responsibility we hold for our creator. In retrospect, I really am not sure if extractions were ever necessary since I am not yet a dental professional. However, If it ever will be, I am 100 percent sure it must take a lot of evaluation and planning before having it done to any living being. Personally, I want to avoid this things looking back because in my case, it really disrupted my dentition and caused full-on TMJ problems. Now, I am hopeful to have my dentition fully restored by a carefully chosen ortho/dentist. I made sure I agree and understand the plan (and guys, I have a messed up dentition now including a problem with my jaw joint and my neck spine. I cannot conclude that it was all due to what happened to me way back 8y ago, but well, I may not find the other reasons for my military neck in the xrays) and it required reopening my extraction spaces to accomodate teeth replacements as well in order to allow a proper TMJ disorder-free bite/occlusion. I am just a month in this treatment and am happy that I feel really positive both physically and mentally that I am in the right direction (I am in self ligating/damon braces by the way). The differences of my previous treatment and my treatment now is great. People around the net will say different things about these braces but as always, do your own research and never compromise on your well-being.

@@Rice413 Thank you for the trust in sharing your own experiences in this post. Before anything else, I would like to clarify that I am not a dental professional in any aspect. However, I do sympathize deeply with your concerns. If I may give my advice, do think it through before having any other teeth extracted for any cause. I have this idea gained from jaw hacks that any sort of extractions are amputations because in theory, God put all your body parts for a reason (I suppose?). In my case, It took me 8y from my extraction-retraction ortho to find another ortho which I am comfortable with the treatment plan. In my case, the key concepts I really looked for in my new ortho was TMJ ortho, no retractions,no extractions, with CBCT or full Xray analysis prior to any treatment proposals (If your ortho is just eyeballing your case, I suggest runaway especially if they boldly suggest additional extractions). Remember, our teeth does not grow back. They are also vital structures which means that the treatment must be gentle enough. As for your facial and bone structures, that is the biggest reason you must be careful. If the ortho does not show considerable knowledge in your jaws (not just your teeth alignment ok), I suggest you pass. Your age is also important since modifications in bone structures are no longer possible in theory when growth ends. However, there may still be reason for hope if you find the right ortho or professional. In my case, I was really lucky that the same ortho that I am having now also exprienced the bad effects of extraction-retractions. She is able to understand me and my case. Just do more asking and comparing before having anything done. If you have doubts, clear it first. Forget about easthetics. It will come if you have the right treatment. Focus on what the next ortho can do to your jaws and your airway. If, the doctor will do an assesment of your airway during your CBCT (without you asking especially) I really think this is a major plus that you are in the right hands. In europe and the US this is more avaible. Above anything else, ask God for guidance and provision. Ill pray for your healing. Good luck.

If only I could afford the treatment, I would be overly contented to have a feature (mouth/lips area) like hers (original). I look quite normal from the front, but from the side my protuding teeth look so sticking out. Even if I zip my lips, my mouth and lips look protruding from the side. Always feel self-conscious and incomfortbale. Would not think twice to go for premolar extraction (especially the upper jaw).
Edit: i'm glad i never had any orthodontic treatment, i still have a full set of teeth (32).

Recently i compared my old and recent pictures I was quite surprised to find out my facial simmetry has improved, my protrusion is less pronounced and my smile has become less gummy (which implies my maxilla has moved up) and i have no more breathing difficulty. I never knew that being a mouthbreather (i used to be) can cause all sorts of problems. Now I can only be thankful i was not able to afford any orthondotic treatment in the past. I like the chin and prominent nose look though. I would prefer that look than the non extracted case with the protrusive look. The non extracted girl is more likely to develop a double chin. I can already see it happening, but the girl with the extracted teeth has a stronger jaw line because her chin is big enough to support the rest of her neck line and jaw, therefore the fat under her neck is tight and supported due to the teeth being positioned the way they are and pushed back, giving the chin more size/space to support the rest of her jawline and neck. The smaller the chin and the smaller the space between the chin and the lower lip, the more weaker your jawline will be. I think it is all opinion on what you find is more aesthetic.

    • @theboyjames3065

If an orthodontist suggests premolar extractions, you have a problem with your jaws, not your teeth. Removing healthy tissue and retracting teeth is only going to exacerbate your problems.
The tongue is connected all the way down to your toes. If your tongue and your jaws aren't functioning properly, this impairment will travel throughout the body.

After 4 extractions, is it possible for the ortho to align the teeth where the front row teeth stays at a normal satisfactory position where it doesn't pull back too far back towards the molars to fill the gap causing the whole teeth to be set slighty backwards creating the lip dip and facial alteration? I ask this because everyone has a different size teeth and I found out that mine are just too large to NOT be extracted and if I don't, I know it will cause flaring. I asked my ortho this and he agrees as well, he wants to save them but my situtation is just too complex. My ortho wants to remove the first premolars on the top and second premolars on the bottom. Hi i have just had two teeth extracted two pre molars at my top, and I never knew it could cause a sunken face.
i got my teeth extracted for the purpose of braces because I had an openbite. But my open bite was caused by another orthodontist who I went to for braces and she didn't want to remove teeth so this caused my teeth to all pull forward giving me a slight protrusion (not to the point it affected my side profile) and it gave me an open bite to the point my bottom and upper set of teeth did not touch at all so I couldn't eat properly. Now I got braces again and have to get two more teeth extracted and they recommended I get my wisdom teeth extracted so 8 in total I am sooo scared I don't want a sunken face. However I have a rare case where I have four sets of wisdom teeth on my top and bottom so 8 in general my wisdom teeth have already come through and luckily they came in straight however I have another set growing in . what do you suggest? i have already extracted two pre molars at my top set I am hesitant about my wisdom teeth I think they are unnecessary and I feel like the less teeth I have the more likely for a sunken face to occur.

Look at the thinning of the upper lip and the enlarged lower lip from the girl with teeth extracted, she is forced to use her lower lip to keep her mouth shut which causes it to get bigger

    • @ESOrthodontics
      @ESOrthodontics  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Anytime you extract 2 teeth on the top, you are going to get a thinning of the upper lip for a flattening of the facial profile. As a result, the upper lip in comparison to the lower lip would have less volume. This is because the upper teeth are retracted and there is less tooth and bone support present.
I don't follow the logic that her lower lip is bigger because the person is using the lower lip to keep the mouth shut. I have never heard that before.

The right side of my face has a structured jaw because i used to chew only on my right side. This has made my face look more asymmetrical than normal ppl. Other than that my front teeth are really forward which also makes my mouth duck-like (i dont know how to explain that lol) and my side profile looks even bad. My dentist suggested for removing four of my premolars, i had a thought that it would make my facial structure better as my jaws are really broad and uneven. After watching your video im confused. So should i believe that removing premolars isnt bad for everyone and some ppl might benefit from it? Because 2/3 of my friends did and they had no negative effect on their faces or even their smiles infact they look better.

As you state in your question, in some cases extractions are necessary, but in a large majority of cases it does negatively affect facial profile. Have you seen an orthodontist? Specifically an orthodontist that specializes in Facial Driven orthodontics.

I have an orthodontist that suggested me an orthognathic surgery because my lower jaw was apprently a bit too small, then the girl that with her told that it was something they were forced to ask to everyone when they are adult in terms of teeths for doing an orthognathic surgery (I'm 17 y-o) So he said that I needed the 4 first premolars extracted. So I don't quite understand what they want??? I know my teeth are a bit crowded on the bottom jaw, that's all. Top jaw doesn't need to get teeth extracted as far as I know (every teeth here is at his place except two). But to be honest, I already have a dentist phobia, so I don't want to pull those teeth out, I was already crying and hyperventilating while the orthodontist was putting me the braces, I already bite him twice, so it's going to be worse for me when I'll go to the dentist on friday to get two out of the 4 teeth removed...
I was wondering if you could give me a second advice about my teeth?
Here in France there's not many orthodontist who wants to take adults for orthodontics treatments so I can go pretty much nowhere to get a second advice in real life...

I had an issue of dracula teeth ( high canine) majorly in the upper teeth. There was only little space under them but they couldn't fit in there so my dentist extracted 2 teeth from my upper jaw/ teeth and now they're completely down in that space and the extra space has almost filled too due to continuous tightening of wire. But I've crowded canines in the lower jaw/ teeth like the canine in my lower jaw are crowded. Like the teeth mostly are crowded not in the proper alignment and my dentist said to me that there would be 2 extractions here too. Should I go for it.? I don't want anything bad happen to my face structure. This video got me super worried. Please reply.

I feel extremely skeptical and nervous about having the final 3 adult molars out for braces. One has just been pulled surely I don't need that much space opened up at each corner! I have an overbite and my wisdom teeth haven't come through, but one tooth beside my front teeth 'underlapse' my bottom teeth. I'm beginning to correct my overbite naturally by moving my jaw towards slightly (which immediately makes my jaw look a little better) my mouths small as it is. I don't have much overcrowding, can't they perform without extracting? I don't fancy suffering more with breathing problems and I don't want my face to get any worse :( I've told my dentist about this and they're simply like 'dont believe everything you read on the internet' My dad just thinks facial structure is all down to genetics and thinks I'm talking nonsense. Well, I was given 2 options: with extraction and without. I have time to choose until 26 Nov. Dentist told me my bone is thin and my teeth are big and crowded, so doing braces without extraction will stretch my gum and I will have to wear night teeth guards/retainer to prevent them from turning crowded again. I was also told that extracting 4 of my teeth is a better option because it will give more space for other teeth to align and not have problems in the future. What I am trying to educate people on through these videos, is that in many cases extraction is not the only option. While there are cases where extractions are needed, I do believe that a lot of extractions are done unnecessarily.

E&S Orthodontics yes. That would be cool. I'm going in for a consultation on Monday and I'm curious as to what he's going to suggest to fix the overjet on my upper teeth and I feel like I'm going to be needing a secondary opinion.
Both of my upper and lower teeth kinda "jut" forward at an angle but my upper teeth are the ones that really need correcting and I'm interested in knowing how they would fix that? It's also what's causing a gap between my teeth. If you're teeth are slightly overcrowded and you also have an overjet would the extraction be a good option? I'm in my early 20's.
