      Ooh yeah! Cool you're going ahead with the rear steer axle. It steers nice and tight.
      I'm sorry if iv'e missed it but could you tell us the make and model of the tractor and or the make and model of the axle?
      Would love to get a hold of one for myself.

    To check the actual engine compression it's best to disconnect the valves to eliminate the decompressor it if has one. If the compression vastly improved if you put oil down the cylinder then the rings are worn. I didn't see much smoke coming out of the exhaust so I'd be surprised if the bore and rings were badly worn.

  • @themeparkkieran4573

    You have got so far with it so surely it deserves a restoration even without the deck just as a lawn tractor or turn it into a hot rod mower

  • @coltonbaird7037

    Those engines have an automatic compression release so when you are starting the engine it has low compression for the starter to turn it but when it starts running the compression release disables and then it will actually have compression

    • @MachineryRestorer
      @MachineryRestorer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I mentioned that as a consideration in part one however these don't have the compression release on the camshaft like the OHV engines. Are you sure they have one?

    • @coltonbaird7037
      @coltonbaird7037 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They might not have them personally I haven’t ever taken apart one of these flat heads i just asumed they have the one on the cam because I don’t think it would even fire with 12psi of compression lol

    • @ronashbaugh4351
      @ronashbaugh4351 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn’t have a compression release just has a grind on closing intake valve late. Also the reason for the low leak down test and compression test was most likely stuck rings and valve stuck or a carbon build up on valves

    • @Revoku
      @Revoku 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MachineryRestorer all I/C flathead 12hp briggs have decompression, they either have the cam lever, or they have a special cam grind that causes a tiny leak while the engine moves slow, but not enough to be a problem at higher RPM

    That is fantastic! You inspired me to find a mower just like that old rusty thing. I would love to see a professional (yourself) restore such a far gone mower. I also have a deck like that Swiss cheese deck. Again, that would be great to see you use plates of 12 gauge steel and butt weld that deck back from the dead. That is such a cool mower. It was a zero turn before there were zero turns. I am just guessing but I am thinking it may be worth a keen bit if restored to almost pristine condition. I am also looking for a Yanmar diesel 10 horsepower to swap into a mower. You are such a great inspiration . thank you.

    The emergency tyre leak fix (the latex stuff) I find works really well on lawn tractor tyres and other things (like wheelbarrow and sack cart wheels). A single can can usually do a whole bunch of things. Wouldn't trust it on the road, but for a garden tractor good enough.

  • @TestECull

    11:36 Yup. That's a flathead Briggs for ya. 30 pounds and it flashes right up, runs like a swiss watch. It'd be interesting to see it on a dyno(I'd almost guarantee it's making a mere fraction of the power it's rated at; my bet is 10hp) but they just do not die. Hell it'd prolly still cut just fine if the deck was operable.

    Air leakage through the breather tells a leaking intake valve. Compression test isn't accurate because of the compression release at cranking RPM.

    • @mikespain8655
      @mikespain8655 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If this engine does have an ACR (automatic compression release), owner says it doesn't, it would be reading 50-60 psi for running and low compression. 30 psi with no ACR and running is unheard of. It is crazy.

Good video though and it was cool seeing a 4 wheel steer mower in action, especially one that anyone else would have simply thrown away.

    That rear steer axle/gearbox is not the best for a front axle due to not having constant velocity joints on the drive shaft. Would do a lot of scrubbing on the frontwheels if allowed to turn more than what it does as a rear mount. if used as is, turning circle would be big. but that can be sorted if one was going to do this 4 wd thing.
