- This ride on lawn mower is rusty and rotten. It has been left outside for many years. The engine won't turn over and the whole thing looks like it's ready to be scrapped. Will it run?

Gotta love when an "American John Deere" sticks a Kawasaki in it because they know the engine is vastly superior to things that they don't make anymore.. Amazing life cranker bud. I love watching these old machines get life back into them.
America engine quality went down once the flat head engines were no longer allowed by emissions. Kawasaki OHV engines are literally bulletproof and were an awesome reliable replacement for those reliable flathead engines.
Briggs and Kohler OHV engines just aren't built to last unfortunately. Chinese parts and poor build quality.
I bailed out (left the USA) in 1965 and at that time "Made in USA" was equal to "cheap and dirty." Americans who could afford them bought German cars, radios and machines. My dad's 1961 Chevrolet rusted out by 1965. My mom drove my 1959 VW until the early 1970s.
All fun and games until John deer throws in a Vtwin 22.5hp Briggs made in the US. I mean yeah Kawasaki’s were good but ever since the new Briggs V twins and Kohlers… Kawasaki gets to sit on the back burner making 2 stroke pit bike motors 😂
John Deere still uses Kawasaki and Yanmar in their premium models such as the X500 and X700 series and they are both Japanese made. Their budget Home Depot models get the Briggs Vtwin engines.

Holy shit.... So I randomly stumbled upon this video after doing some small engine repair research. As soon as I heard that voice I knew who it was, and a quick scroll revealed I was correct. I was both shocked and excited. I've been watching daggerwin for years to scratch my FS itch, and never knew this channel existed.... Super stoked!

Sounds like your carburetor needs a cleanup/tune-up.
@@netts2315 Yeah I cleaned it up (it was full of shellac) and it runs better but still stalls once in a while. It does need a throttle adjustment because the idle begins to surge so I don't know.

I junked the single cylinder version of this machine a couple of years ago. I should have sent it to you, all the fenders and everything were complete.

For cleaning out the varnished old fuel use acetone, eats it really well.

You definitely got lucky with this machine, theses engine can become huge money pits when they get older, primarily the ignition system and the parts are not cheap.
I’ve never seen an older John Deere rust out this bad, the newer ones yes but not these ones.
Just worked on one the other day, had tan oil in it...blown head gasket. I informed the owner and left it at that. I Not doing a head gasket job.

I've taught high school here Sydney Australia for 25 years, also Industrial Arts, Metalwork, Woodwork, Electronics,Physics, Chemistry and Science. I've been repairing small engines since I was 12. I repair most things, they generally are simple to repair. i am a Material Scientist.
Your style of presentation is excellent. You do not go overboard when the engines start , as they generally should start when given the correct requirements. You are comprehensive as evident by your success.
I use white vinegar to remove ALL rust , requiring wire brushing say every 6 hours. I do not us rust remover. White vinegar cost $1.20 for 2 litres and I keep using it for a along time. It is the cheapest way to derust, but it take s time.
A suggestion. You do not need to be emotive about the parts. They either are dirty or broken. You are repairing metal, plastic and rubber. But I have to admit, at times some machinery has it's own character, and simply can be difficult to play ball and start. It has hapened to me when an engine has fuel, spark, air, and timing all correct and the engine refuses to start.
after sitting for so long im sure a bit of run time will seat the rings again and then there will be no smoke but im sure you already know that greetings from holland :))

Next time you can put the pickup tube in a ziplock bag fill with evaporust. This is good for odd shaped items. Plus less evaporust is used. Great video.

How on earth is it that rusty? Was it washed with salt water daily? I've had one sit outside for years and never seen that much rust
What amazes me is this guy does this kind of work in a shed that most Americans wouldn't use for more than a push mower, holiday decorations, and some garden tools that will never get used.

The smoke could be due to stuck piston rings, and after being running for awhile they might get lose again. Did you do a compression test?

Good question. He probably buys/find them online or in scrap yards. He probably sells them for profit or keeps it’s for fun.
I have a John Deere 185 (Predecessor to the lx178 I think) and I payed 400$ for it back in April and it has been a very reliable lawn tractor. Great video! 👍

Great video again thanks! The commercial here in the states says nothing runs like a deere lol. Should say a deerasaki lol. I’ve been a fan of Kawasaki for years, always had good luck with them except for my current one. My kx250f likes to eat valves lol, but that’s always inherent in this engine. Cheers!

А про відео ролик - забагато балачок, якість робіт треба розширити, рульове -змастити, фари, проводку частково. Автору - респект! Молодець, що у техніці розбирається.

The fuel pump is cam-driven. The seal or diaphragm may be leaking fuel into the crankcase.

I've never seen anything rust that bad.
Good video. When I encountered engines in that condition when I was doing a lot of this work, I would mix 30 weight oil with kerosene. About half & half. As long as you don't run the engine at high R.P.M.'s and for just long enough to get some heat in it, it doesn't hurt anything. The result is quite impressive in regard to the crud that drains out.
Never seen a riding mower rusted out like that.
I’ve got a lx176 with the Kawasaki single cylinder engine (14 hp). It’s been all maintenance, never have had to replace a single thing ever since I got it about 12 years ago.
those kawasaki 14hp engines are perhaps the best lawnmower engines ever - extremely reliable and just don’t die
New subscriber. She certainly is a runner thanks to the engine being a Kawasaki. Superb, premium small engines. These videos are long but are interesting the whole way through kind of like a good movie. You really have a way with sorting out issues and not wasting time but doing the right things first to remedy a problem. Not many people have your abilities which seem to be fading rapidly in western societies. In the US, mechanics have become parts replacers or scrappers more than fixit people but in the age of designed obsolescence it is entirely their fault. It has become cheaper and overall more cost effective to simply replace an entire thing than to repair it.

Wow that’s really rusty! I have an LX188 very similar to that and it had a 48 inch mower deck that had basically nothing left. That model has the 44 inch piranha deck. They were great little mowers. The Kawasaki liquid cooled engines did have some cam failure problems with a plastic cam gear but other than that they work nice. I work at a Deere dealership. My lx188 sat for two years outside in a cold environment with the battery unhooked. Hooked the battery back up and it fired right up. I put a 42” mower on it and have been using it daily. It’s beat up, hood is shot but it works great.
