I'd say the *Demi-Friend* from Digital Devil Saga 1 can come as a surprise seeing as there's a new scene in a room on NG+ and the said scene somehow transports the player to a new boss fight which will probably obliterate them before they can understand why they're hearing the battle theme from SMT 3.
Heisenberg's monstrous creations look like they came straight out of the film 'Frankenstein Army' and I'm all for it. If you haven't seen the film and like Resident Evil I recommend it. It's like they just took the monsters straight out of the film and slapped them in the game. That section of RE Village was definitely my favorite.
Kind of the opposite to that giant bird thing in GoW 2018 when you go to Hel the first time. Was really expecting it the be the guardian i was meant to fight but just ended up fighting another , only slightly different troll.
I never finished Bloodborne because of number 1. I had been fighting my way down through the area before that, and it was basically one of those amazing times in a Souls game where I was at the end of my rope: I was hurt, out of healing items, super deep into enemy territory that I'd never been before, just pressing my luck and hoping for a bonfire (or whatever they're called in Bloodborne) soon since I didn't want to backtrack. The classic Souls experience. And I got to that door, which seemed like it would just open to a new area and probably have a bonfire shortly after, so I went to open it, and then got grabbed by an invisible monster and instantly killed. I was so pissed. I wouldn't have cared if there was a fight and I died, since that's part of the game, but an invisible giant monster that grabs you when you try to open a door and kills you? The idea of redoing that whole slog back down to where I died to get my souls back was just too much and I uninstalled. It was frustrating, because even with traps and stuff, Souls games are normally pretty fair (you can see a pressure plate or other trigger, etc.), and that just seemed completely unavoidable, and at the end of such a long and tough area. No thanks.
I know I'm late but just wanted to say, coming from the cathedral lamp its not that far. Also once you beat the two hunter's in that area they don't respawn. Could also be you went to early because there's several areas to do first that are easier. You may know all this but thought I'd comment because it's easily one of my favorite games of all time. Also when you get grabbed and have a certain item it teleports you to a new area. You get through the door (well to the opposite side anyway) after some other different areas
Having the Tonsil Stone, the Amygdala that grabbed you will take you to a completely new optional area. Frenzy also takes off 70% of your HP instantly, so as long as you're above 70% or at full HP you'll be fine.
The Rancor on Jedi: Survivor definitely deserved to be on this list, lost count how many times I died before saying "Screw it, I'll come back to it later."
Not a boss appearance but in the original Resident Evil when the dogs first jump through the windows scared the crap out of me. I remember my dad just laughing hysterically when I screamed. Good times.
yeah, the thing about Majima is at some point, he hides in a giant traffic cone.if you don't go and find him, he'll just appear as a boss when the story needs him
I’d like to acknowledge the first Dragon in the Hinterlands in Dragon Age Inquisition. Replaying the game for the first time in almost 6 years and CHRIST does it just slam dunk your team out of nowhere
I remember how awesome it felt to encounter Former, and how that feeling faded into frustration with each fall off the platform. God, Control is such a good game.
Sonic Frontiers actually had a surprising one on the games final island. Where, in certain spots, there are these interactive pillars. Even turning color when using Cyloop on it. But given everything up until this point, I just thought it was another puzzle. But nope! Turns out the ghost guardian is hiding inside, and caught me completely off guard! Concerning Tears of the Kingdom, and after pumping in SOO many hours into it. I can definitely agree on the Master Kohga boss fights! Unexpected, but hilarious at the same time! I can think of two bosses from the Souls series more surprising than Amygdala and The Penetrator Asylum Demon from Dark Souls 1 and Flying Dragon Agheel from Elden Ring
I remember being so terrified of how Clayface was introduced in Arkham City sure it wasn't surprising, but it was pretty damn scary to my 7 year old self
During the Rancor fight in Jedi Survivor, you can pick up one of the bones on the floor with force pull, then use force push to shoot the bone out and get it stuck in the Rancor's mouth, giving you time to do a lot of damage, this is a really cool Easter egg of the scene in Return of the Jedi.
Regarding the bonus: You do get to hear this creature beforehand, Heisenberg converses with it, then he kicks you down and you run away from it (I believe). There's also many notes telling of its creation.
Number 8 is WAY MORE mentally terrifying in jedi academy as a kid. I genuinely found it hard to play through that level. Mentally fucks with you way more than a simple jump scare anyday
Master Kohga is by far my favorite Zelda boss, because he's super goofy and in my opinion, really fun to fight. Honestly, I'm looking forward to fighting him again in TOTK when I finally get the game and play it.
Doom 2016 had some cool ones, one grabs you while opening a door and throws you. Doom eternal had awesome ones like the Marauder, Succubus had some scary stuff, Devil May Cry 5 had many amazing ones. So did Turok 2 and I seem to remember the Duke Nukem reboot having some cool bosses but gameplay was not so satisfying.
The Giant Ape bossfight in Sekiro. Took me so long to get past the first phase and then all of a sudden WABBAM there's a second one that made me cry when I realised I wasn't done
Number one is the main reason I remember bloodborne...I remember when I found that guy first time, playing late night in a dark room...was running around trying to lvl up, see this one by surprise just shockingly see my character be grabbed from the ceiling of the room...that was more of a, "what the hell just happened" but then fighting him was actually easy surprisingly
In Ace Combat Assault Horizon, you actually get to meet the main boss in a fight during the very very first mission and it kills you.....only for it to be a dream-nightmare sequence. Bit of a twist tbh for an ace combat game. Also, fun fact about the Rancor, the roar was made from the growls of a person who was the neighbor of the sound engineers, little dachshund....
The sudden appearance of Cynthia in Pokemon Undella town in Pokemon Black/White made me almost throw my 3ds when I thought it was just a random conversation and suddenly challenged me to a fight when I wasn't even prepared. Didn't go to the Pokemon Center, and didn't save for almost a couple of hours.
Kwolok x corrupt vine from Ori WoW. You're asked to find kwolok who went ahead of you, you meet him but something is weird. I remember thinking was he in a trance finding the universe answer or something but then he tries to eat Sen and things starts to get suspicious. I never expected that the vine you ran from earlier would be attached to him. I screamed a really confused scream. I never thought something like that would happen in the game and I was starting to get attached to him. I still get sad thinking about it
I haven't played 4 in a while, but if memory serves, when Nero faces Baal, immediately after the nymph thing runs it's course and he lunges at you, You can punish him with a well-timed Buster. 👊
I’d like to put forth the Ur-Draug boss fight from the first dungeon of the MMORPG The Secret World/Secret World: Legends. Long story short, you fight/defeat what you think is the final boss and board a helicopter at the extraction point. A cutscene plays, showing you and your party members looking relieved and happy to be leaving… Only for STORE BRAND CTHULHU to fly up to the helicopter and swat it out of the sky, killing everyone on board in the subsequent crash (the PCs are immortal though, so it’s okay, they get better) and then the real final boss fight begins! Still holds the top spot as my all-time favorite unexpected boss appearance, which definitely inspired confused, panicked screaming!
that god damn blob baby from RE Village. Asylum Demon from Dark Souls 1 and Flying Dragon Agheel from Elden Ring
I just love how you see the player take a screenshot of Propeller Man when the fire-breathing starts 😂
Take a shot every time Falcon mispronounces a name.
Passed out before the second minute.
He looks like he belongs in a NIN music video.” Line of the year. Love your content as usual Falcon!
Regarding the bonus: You do get to hear this creature beforehand, Heisenberg converses with it, then he kicks you down and you run away from it (I believe). There's also many notes telling of its creation.
Correction on Kohga : He himself says that you casted him into the Depths in the previous game 3:20
Number 8 is WAY MORE mentally terrifying in jedi academy as a kid. I genuinely found it hard to play through that level. Mentally fucks with you way more than a simple jump scare anyday
i think marguerite baker is more of a "shit myself" scream than confused scream.
"He looks like he belongs in a Nine Inch Nails music video" well that was a great line and also very true!
Spawn of oggdo was much more surprising and terrifying than the rancor for me
Master Kohga is by far my favorite Zelda boss, because he's super goofy and in my opinion, really fun to fight. Honestly, I'm looking forward to fighting him again in TOTK when I finally get the game and play it.
It's a fun fight. He's a wacky, fun fight. . .didn't need to be difficult. . .just needed to be fun and he is.
Off topic but god I love gameranx so damn much
I still remember the confused screech i was making the entire fight with the propeller man from Village. Cant say if i was more scared or confused.
What led to confused screaming the most was NOT finding Majima everywhere.
3:50 he's basically just a tutorial to show you the kind of things you can build. Clever.
I need more *confused screaming* videos, plz and ty.
I'm too early, i want to say something funny, but i don't know anything, so here this is
Thanks for the time stamps. They help me skip a lot of games I dont care about.
Hearing falcon say goofy ass is my new favorite thing
I still get sad thinking about it
I haven't played 4 in a while, but if memory serves, when Nero faces Baal, immediately after the nymph thing runs it's course and he lunges at you,
You can punish him with a well-timed Buster.
The way you say Majima my lord
that god damn blob baby from RE Village. House Beneviento is unsettling enough with the doll factory, but when the lights go out and you walk forward and that damn Baby blob monster starts chasing you. that is the definition of "confused screaming" Why is it there? where did it come from? I need a change of underwear!!!
I swear you guys uploaded this one and I've seen it already, maybe I'm tripping tho lol I just love watching the new videos everyday
