My sister worked on the Tonight Show and was invited to the Tokyo Drift premier. Upon leaving in her automatic BMW Z3 she was pulled over and arrested for “street racing” a Miata. From what she says is that the Miata pulled up at a stop light and revved so messing around she did it back. Light turned green and the Miata took off. Cop pulled her over. Arrested and car impounded. She fought it in court and won. That was the last time she accepted a invite for a F&F movie.

Craig is right here I have been over 180 on public roads to many times to count but only on highways when there is little to no traffic around preferably at night...ive been on gold rush 2018 and 19 and have had a blast and you certainly get rowdy on runs like that as well and when people are acting as a group and get each other worked up that's when bad things can happen you don't know the other drivers capabilities and that can lead to bad things I it's not me I'm worried about it's everyone else I try to get away from everyone and ride on my own I feel better as I am much more in control.... another problem is if your going fast and just cruising like 120 or so not necessary reckless like heavy weaving and riding on the shoulders etc. you'll often get someone dips**t in a genesis v6 mustang or even an accord trying to keep up with you trying to race you I'm in a 720s my car is made to do those kinds of speeds like its nothing and can stop in short time from high speed and maneuver quickly the likely hood of them doing something and getting you tied up with them is very high in that case it pisses me off to no end just be careful car friends and don't overestimate your or your car's capabilities it likely won't end well...

As a bonus what seems to happen most often is the guys doing the takeovers get away free and clear and what happens after that is police issue loads more "47 in a 45" or "your (stock) exhaust sounded loud even though I can't measure it" tickets to people who had nothing to do with the takeover to prove to the community that they're taking the problem seriously.

The police here in Charlotte just did this recently. They apparently had been monitoring "organized street races" since Feb/Mar collecting evidence. In June, they showed up to a bunch of houses at 6:00am and arrested them and seized their cars. In total, I believe there were 50 arrests and 60 cars taken.
I have personally always avoided any meets or events where idiots start racing, swinging, or doing burn outs. However, being involved in the car community here I do have two friends who did have their cars taken. Both are unsure whether they will ever get their cars back.
Its a hard lesson, especially since we are in the NASCAR capital and have racetracks all over the place here...everyones excuse is "they are expensive to race at". Probably a lot cheaper than having your brand new MK5 Supra seized by the police and still having to pay for it regardless.

This is what happens when the police run everyone out of empty parking lots at 230 am. They move to the street. Nobody is going to get hurt that didn't choose to be there. Nobodies car is going to get hurt if it isn't in or near the intersection. It would be better if there were giant empty paved spots that people could use at night... charge admission, make it more for a car than a person so the ones actually using the pavement up are paying more for it.

My street racing days ('07-'08) were always like this: Meet up in an industrial park chosen that day, meetup time was around midnight, we pick the drivers, we pick the spot (typically a highway race), and do a rolling start at 70kph, and race til the designated overpass. Rarely did standing quarters, but they happened on a specific bridge in a specific industrial area. I won a couple slips back in the day on that bridge. Good times. People today are 100% stupid for doing street racing like they are now.

So, here's the situation for where I live.
We had a track, not just a drag strip, but circle track and 3-ish kilometre road course, setup on 60 acres. Was built in the 1960's, on land leased from the municipal government. When it was built, it was 20 minutes OUTSIDE the city limits (and more from the nearest municipal community). Of course, fifty years later, there are now houses being built right up to the fenceline of the track. Complaints from people too stupid to look at a map and see the track came flooding in. Cops chimed in and said that having the track encouraged street racing. Then the city 'needed' a new landfill and denied the lease extension. Entire property was turned into landfill, which ran for less than five years before being closed due to lack of use. Next closest track is four hours away. After the track closed, street racing SPIKED, and has continued to get worse as time goes on. Even on private property, cops will push property managers to prohibit car meets of any kind.
Plans were drafted about ten years ago to build a new track about an hour and a half away, but so far, its not even passed the development phase; Simultaneously, a second track was designed. This one faced pushback from the community it was originally going to be a part of, so it moved to a different site. As far as I know, its under construction, with the first phase set to be open this year BUT it was specifically prohibited from including a drag strip of any kind. So, we STILL don't have a drag strip for those who want straight-line racing. We have cops actively ticketing people ON PRIVATE PROPERTY (yes, its illegal for cops to do that here), kids who want to speed/show-off/be stupid with no place to go, a large community of older enthusiasts who can't be assed to get to know the younger generation, and the larger public actively villifying enthusiasts just for existing.

The problem is Gen Z. The zoomers are ruining car culture for social media clout. Not just takeovers, but even just the way they "modify" their cars.
Last summer I had an interesting experience. My friend wanted me to go to a Hyundai Genesis club meet in an unused parking lot. We went with his gf and my brother. Spent about an hour to an hour and a half walking the lot, talking to the people about their cars/builds, etc. Super chill. Then, I'd guess about 50 cars of various makes/models showed up out of nowhere. They revved their stupid burble tunes, bounced the limiters, etc. on their entry.
These guys all got kicked from wherever they were at prior, found out about this meet, and crashed it. My group decided we wanted snacks/drinks & a bathroom break at the nearby gas station. Walked there, did our thing over maybe 10 minutes tops. Walked back, and what do you know? There's 10+ cop cars breaking the meet up. Thanks clowns. Thanks a lot.

I'm 62, and have been a hot rodder and amateur drag racer for more than 40 years. I race only older, pre emissions American cars. My first hot rod/race car was a 1964 Chevy Nova at age 18. I've been through a lot of cars since then, my current street legal drag race car is a 1964 Ford Fairlane. I don't know if I will ever build another race car or not, considering my age. I have ALWAYS raced on the track, and have been an NHRA member forever. None of this crazy new technology will ever affect me. I have had all kinds of daily drivers over the last several decades, from Corvettes to pickups. My current daily driver/ transportation car/cross country car is a Mercury Grand Marquis. And I have connections that will ensure I will have either a Grand Marquis or Ford Crown Vic to drive for the rest of my life. The last model year for these cars was 2011, though many were made long after that to fulfill orders placed by both civilian and government fleet departments across the country. I have spent my entire life as a government fleet department mechanic, and I know these cars inside and out. Unless it gets wrecked I can keep the same car going for a million miles by replacing parts. I do drive the speed limit. And stay in the right lane. And because of that I have been rear ended twice during the past 5 years by serious speeders (20-25 mph over the limit) who were not paying attention.

I think the reason a lot of people are turned off by the track is not necessarily lack of availability but lack of open use. All too often the track is dominated by sanctioned events which certainly are a moneymaker for the track but without opportunities for open racing it makes it more difficult Uber drivers to get wild and cut loose in a safe controlled environment.
Certainly officially illegal but short of legit track racing I think more of the better options would be to limit such things two areas where entrance and exit are if not completely controlled such as a proper track the available path for doing any activities that would be considered illegal street racing is sufficiently controlled where no one could easily find themselves in the path of it such as the back of a industrial park with a sufficiently straight and wide path and adequate room for safe return to the other end.

I don't know of a single instance of someone getting hurt or crashing amongst anyone I knew. But then in the local paper a CRX raced a Mustang and somehow crashed and all you heard for weeks was that street racing was the worst pandemic ever. They even tried to spin a Mecury Mountaineer racing some grandma Oldsmobile as a street race because two idiot 16 year olds decided to drag race and somehow managed to crash.

    Couple important things:
It's not that the govt should provide race tracks, but the Nurburgring business model should have more examples. Circuit race tracks are stupidly expensive to join as a club member and per-diem events are pricey and you have to run your car hard for a couple hours on track to get your money's worth, which is hard on your tires, brakes, engine, etc.
If there were more (hopefully safer in design) Nurburgrings scattered around with pay-per-lap "tolls" where someone could drive over on a Tuesday, turn and burn for 20 minutes, then drive their car home, it would be way more accessible and affordable. I'm not a fan of the exact track design of the Nurburgring (too little runoff, too many blind turns, etc), but having driven it and experiencing how easy it is to just drive up and hit the track is something we need more of.
That said, there are some that will always street race because the "f you" to "the man" is what they want. Those people closing down intersections are trying to be anarchists that think they're too cool to obey any laws, they're exactly like the wheelie clubs in motorcycles that love to wheelie down a busy street instead of in a parking lot at a closed business. These people won't do sanctioned events no matter how cheap or accessible they are, they're there for the chaos.

      @nunyabusiness896 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@craiglieberman I don't know if it would necessarily exist in California, or at least not in prime LA area, but I have a feeling if you just had some basic pavement with lots of runoff and a line of cars ready to drive it every day, you'd do OK. Rental kart tracks do just fine charging $25 for 10 minutes and they have to maintain the karts, with a basic track you just have to maintain a road and that's it. Sure, you have to keep emergency services nearby, but if you have 100's of people going through a day, that's trivial. The Nurburgring had to be bailed out by a billionaire recently, but that was technically because they made a bad business decision turn a race track into an amusement park that is nowhere near any major cities. It doesn't have to be anything special for people to support it, it doesn't need fancy elevation change and interesting complex corners, it just needs to be a place where people can drive their sports car without endangering the public.

In 2007, Ontario Canada introduced stunt driving legislation that meant your car would be impounded and license suspended for 7 days immediately at the side of the road. Go to court, find the ticket thrown out or reduced to something minor, but you were still 7 days without a license and car. Who needs roller coasters when you can run cat and mouse races on Hot Version's touge course, or the Akina downhill complete with the 5 consecutive hairpins, even Pikes Peak inspired tracks. Add in restaurants, concession stands, and music venues along with your standard drag, drift, and circuit tracks to add up into a one stop shop of motorsport adventure and community. Hold auto salon events for all the showcars and crazy tuners regularly, free wifi for the gram crowd, all available at a reasonable price, even a discount for season passes. Such a chain of gathering locations would blow up the scene and get it off the streets, improving public perception and adding an approachable atmosphere where any and all who want to show up and give it a go can do just that at their own pace and level while learning from more experienced drivers in a safer setting. Wavers would be required due to liability so the parks don't get shut down, but what amazing times could be had by all.

The place I grew up at had a highway behind my house it was almost straight for about a mile, there was a red light at one end and there was a bridge about a quarter mile from it so they used to race every friday and saturday night till dawn the cops were afraid to stop them.
It all came to an end the summer of 73 just before I turned five. On a friday night about 230 am two cars were racing with four people in each one, they both wrecked into a car coming the opposite way. The crash was so loud it woke me up, I thought the house blew up. My mom was up doing dishes waiting for my dad to come home from work, she saw it from the kitchen window. All 9 of them died what was scary to us was the innocent bystander's car was the same as my dads and he was late, he stopped at the club to have a beer, that cars front end was ripped off and it looked like it was buried in the road.
My older brother who was 13 at the time ran to see if he could help, he reconized the racers cars and when he got there one guy was still alive, he was in the front seat, but because of how smashed the car was only one of his hands was visible above the dash. He was screaming for his mother over and over each time quieter than the previous time until he died, my brother couldn't help him, he talked to him until he died my brother still gets all emotional when he thinks of that.
My dad got home a half hour after that and since he put together the volunteer fire department when they developed the neighbor hood, they came and asked him to help out because some of the bodies where torn apart and they were looking for the pieces and they couldn't find one of the passengers, they had these trucks with spot lights that lit everything like it was day time. When they found the body it was up in the v of a tree and my dad said the guys skin was wadded up around his ankles like a pair of un fastened pants.
That night was the last time they raced because everyone realized how stupid they were plus the state police started to patrol that part of the highway along with the local cops.

The intersection takeovers are fucking stupid. If you’re dumb enough to stand anywhere near that or in front of cars racing then you are full well knowingly that you are in possible danger if the cars lose control. And these takeovers are the reason why we are losing everything for our cars, especially California. I’m a motorcycle rider, I used to be in the car scene heavily. And we would go out and race, drift whatever but we were way out like 15 or 30 miles away from ANYONE, yeah we were scared if someone got hurt we were fucked but we went out anyway and we understood the risks, and we still went out. Being a motorcyclist, I like stunting so we go out to a lot and keep away from everyone else, like we even get permission from owners of property and they don’t mind as long as we are cool and no one dies or damages property intentionally or if we do we pay for fixes. I’m all for having fun but being safe while doing it too.
I’ll tell you right now, they are not going to be able to add speed limiters, breathilizers, etc to these cars. It’s going to cost too much. The people will fight back, and we will win. It’s a violation to our privacy, once you’re a convicted felon or proved to the justice system you are a liability then your rights are stripped, but to impose on people who have nothing to do with it, is not going to fly.

I despise street takeovers. Just bring it to a fucking parking lot. Quit blocking traffic.

It's not about the cars, it's about the attention. They also seem to get off on pissing people off.
      Really nice group of people.

@@Weimerica8841 I know it's not about the cars. I don't understand why they don't do it in a parking lot. Bothering no one but themselves. Highway takeovers are even worse. Yes because everyone on the road has amazing breaks at 70mph.

@@JonesBrothersProductionsiac Because doing it in a parking lot means no crowd (even though half of the crowd is usually just trying to get home lol) and no clout. It also doesn't upset anyone, so there are no "haters" to complain about.
Doing it in a parking lot would make them realize how sad the whole thing really is. Just a bunch of guys who didn'y get enough attention as children.

Used to street race in late 90s and early 2000s. Now I'm 40 and I do all my racing on the track. Safe and fun. These intersection take overs just stupid.

I like prepped, timed tracks. You don't need to have anything fast to have fun, you just have to try to improve your time slip. Plus you get to hang out worry free and see what other cars run.

  • @siraff4461
    @siraff4461 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have never understood why this is so difficult to sort out. The government don't need to build tracks - just set aside some ground and let people make their own. Give them some basic rules like no spectators after the line and let them get on with it.
Then to go with this any purposeful infringement on the street should be jumped on way, way harder.

Glad you are raising these issues Craig I commented on another vid you did sometime ago and it’s timely, I have a few cars and while I’m a bit younger than you Im still closer to your end of the spectrum than these kids today with names on there cars and accounts on every social media platform.
I follow quite a few YT channels because I am an avid car and bike scene ( I still race track, MX for fun, bit of off-road again fun, no longer pro, still race MTB, do the odd track days in car for fun, I am owner driver rider and adrenaline junky, that said, I use my head, a friend asked me the other day why I don’t have radar detector in my cars and I said I prefer to trust me instincts and when I am taking some liberties on those rare occasions on backroads (canyons, country roads ) which are abundant where I live, I prefer to be on my game focused and use my brains, still a risk,, not my points though re the vid.
My point is like you have said there is allot of activity that’s been regularly streamed uploaded by many tubers some of which I sub to won’t mention anyone or where, but it’s like it is ingrained in them that this is only a thing on a California that rules don’t apply to them because they have a big TH-cam channel or Insta, more so it’s the modifications, like straight piped dump piped venting to air and while Id like to be able to do some of that stuff to my cars I can’t if I want to legally street drive them on weekends, track only no problem, but my JDMs are mostly street, I have cars ranging from 20k to 150k (not USD) I regularly get pulled over but not for infringing, sometimes because they are car people and just want to check out the cars, but every-time they are shocked when my drivers window comes down and ai take my glasses off and they see a mature adult not some tweenie (20s man /woman child) I say anyways most can’t afford cars like this, why would you think that, but of course there are plenty who have nice cars like mine or others, some have good income jobs I guess, it was def harder for me when these cars were new and ai was late teen early twenties co pared to US many of these cars were 70-130k when brand new here in the 90s, how where they get the money I don’t know, guess money comes easier today for younger people.
I understand youtubers state side can make allot and many channels I follow are very financial have worked hard to build and it’s not easy, but reality is life ain’t easy in regular jobs (pointing at you TH-camrs who say this) be thankful you work hard at working on your passion, not a dead end 9/5 and good on them for that. I celebrate success of these and myself or others.
My point is they are also successful marketeers, probably most influential as shown by the many sponsors they promote and are attractive to once the channels have enough traffic or subs likes etc, but some regularly go too’s eg builds are mostly for illegal mods that are promoting indirectly to build their channels, their brand almost at the car scene expense, it also like an example of young girls who get plastic surgery to look that mode, they constantly see in magazines or today online or insta channels, they want what they can’t have it’s marketed to them constantly.
As you have said, these commie states and commie governments are coming, these guys don’t care about the environment, that’s just a hook for everyday common people that are sheep to society to believe in, my country imports more coal now for energy supply and crisis management than ever in history and we promote ourselves as 100% pure.
it’s commie, propoganda, it is about control, we need laws and we need governance but for all and for rights of all and freedoms, but that does not mean we can do what we like to hell with anybody, as you say there are consequences, life and death it’s part of life, you still have to make informed decisions even if you are facing wether it’s on a track a closed circuit or street life is about choices risks, it’s this basic do unto others that you would want done un to you!
If we want to keep our cars out investments and our passions for the long term, we can’t be giving these woke, commie, cancel culture neo nazais any opportunity excuses and BS rhetoric about saving the plant pet that they fckd up and we are paying for,
abut we have to get out shit together, these kids seem to have just thrown out the bath water with the bath and said we are gonna lose it, let’s use it while we can and to hell with anyone or any thing.
I watched a video this week, a car which I have followed the build and enjoy the channel and he cars, he drives it main down town city, boosting through lights drifting around corners where built up traffic is on every lane and is laughing at pedestrians and other drivers reactions and it’s all over youtube in road daylight, not the first time. He’s just laughing enjoying it like it’s an everyday thing which it almost is with him, that side of his channel ai don’t like, seeing him in Mexico no problem if he hurts himself ok but dpnt out others at risk, don’t expose yourself, he’s very recognisable by his cars alone, he needs no name on his car, though his plate is always shown in vids.Old saying be a thinker, not a stinker!
I have seen a guy with over 1 million subs he buys dirtbikes and him, his posse of riders which can be huge sometimes ride daytime and night time on dirtbikes (motocross bikes essentially , unregistrable, these are not street bikes they are close course off road race bikes 10” suspension front and rear, 450 4t MX weapons doing wheelies for days through red lights in main street built up cities him and his posses are everywhere night and day, a couple of years ago one of those riders was killed being hit by a car legitimately driving thru the intersection where they collided the guys have no helmets on, no dirtbike gear, just GoPros.
I’m not a fuddy or some rat, I have never called on anyone, unless at an accident scene which ai have been at twice randomly driving so,eh were and had to help on scene it’s not pretty nice and you never forget. I still as said earlier take my liberties at times but where the border is beyond mexico, still risk, someone random could come out of a hidden drive way on a back road most risk is from stock, a sheep, cow or deer or wombat, pig. even dog, etc have had some neat misses, But id never blow a red light or a stop sign, even in back country. know one intersection that is stop sign only where a number of deaths resulting in jail for offenders that survived has occurred.
Anyways good topic keep up the fight and the educating. information am behind you 100% I hope I don’t live to see the 40lm restricted car commie neo nazai scene before I die, my casket will be my MK4, Im taking it with me.
Lastly what is almost absurd is while u mention Government’s pushing the EV green and restricted future, the EV manufacturers are making all EVs more easily powerful for the generation of people who may be law abiding but who are in general the worst drivers with the lest amount of skill behind a wheel and proof of that is the sheer amount distractions in the car from infotainment systems to crap for kids in the back seats and to prove it even more the sheer amount of abS technology that’s supposed to make them and everyone else safe, the safest person is the person who knows there limitations is trained as well as possible, makes good decisions and is aware of theirs and others on the road or any environment not some programable POS technology, if it’s not bad enough we suffer cyber attacks on almost a per second basis now our future cars will be devices they can also hack, track and control. I’m not in and hell will freeze over before I buy into it, they’ll have to pull my cars from my cold dead hands. I still like to let my hair down, I am prepared to follow common sense laws for all, not widely poor future unsustainable Bas rhetoric regarding our rights and abilities to drive, I have always paid my taxes, I have always insured, certified and registered my cars and bikes for road that were to be used on public roads, I will not support any Government that takes away my rights when I have paid my dues for me and many others, I don’t have any car on the street without it’s cats mufflers or any other std emission equipment, It may have been improved eg OEM plus. So that’s my other side of the coin.
Anyways Mav out, cheers for the vid and I hope the street shut downs and these groups wake up and smell the bacon before the burn the toast for all of us. peace out 🤙🤘

It's just going to make it worse on reasonable car enthusiast who will suffer long term from this idiotic acts and hastened restrictions aiming to stop that. I myself drive in more spirited manner from time to time wherever its safe, and i dont speed in any excessive way, but this just goes on to kill more and more of the fun in cars on top of everything that ruined most of the more pedestrian cars in last 10 years. Even if i grab myself an older car i always wanted to have they will probably prohibit me from driving it in 10-15 years

    Government funded brothel?
    Give that some serious thought.
-people are being employed, possibly with benefits (not that kind 😄)
    -it's regulated
    - safer than standing on a street corner.
I think you know my stance. Change my mind!

I remember when I went to jail for littering, no one wanted to associate with me. So I included 'creating a nuisance' and things got better.
