The studio version of this has James Taylor doing the 2nd voice, Mark does Dixon and James does Mason. Danny Cummings who is on drums here was the percussionist on the reaction you did before with "Calling Elvis" live. If you want to see Marks guitar style even better you should see "Song for Sonny Liston" from the AVO session 2007, it was really filmed well there.
The band he has now began forming in 1996 and has really only gained members since. Much longer than any iteration of Dire Straits. And as far as studio musicians go his bass player is generally considered the best in Nashville. Just love it when they get together every few years and gift us mere mortals with some great tunes.
This is such a great storytelling song. A bit of a history lesson about the two English surveyors Mason and Dixon. I like the studio version with Mark singing the part of Dixon and James Taylor singing the part of Mason, but the live versions are extra special with the pairing of Mark's guitar and John McCusker's tin whistle? Like you said it sounds straight out of the Shire :) and I always think the brushes on drums are like waves against the hull of a ship as it sails.
Aah, thanks for correcting the name, I actually happen to know this terminology from playing in a Irish/rock band when I was younger, but didn't realize it during shooting the video.
You have to listen to the official studio version. It’s a duet with James Taylor. The album has great tunes on it : What It Is, STP of course, Silvertown Blues, Speedway At Nazareth…
A very beautiful performance of a great song, you should read up about the lyrics too, because there is a true story here that has written a song about. Here he proves yet again why I think he is the greatest, you don't need to be playing lots if notes all the time, but when needed he plays more for the outro, he always leaves you wanting more instead of giving way to much.
Do try a 2019 version (Last show of his final tour). Richer, more elaborate, more instruments, more solos, (more "mature"): th-cam.com/video/-vJNc01MnPs/w-d-xo.html
Hey, I’m just starting to play and am deciding between a Fender Strat or a Telecaster. I know you’re not a Strat guy. I love both equally and am curious as to why you prefer the Telecaster? Mark Knopfler is a Strat guy and his tone is brilliant. I essentially want to play like him which will take about 70 years. 😂
Hey, I think both guitars are great. I'd say strat is more versatile, tele doesn't give you so many options, but is very reliable. Go for Strat if you like it, it's a great guitar! Let me know if you want some lessons. 😉

You will love "Postcards from Paraguay".
Mark Knopfler es fantástico, verdad?😊
É tão bom ver Mark cantando e tocando...imediatamente meu corpo ,minha mente e coração entra numa espécie de relaxamento...ele é maravilhoso! ❤❤❤❤❤
The flute - reflects the Northumberland Pipes. Smaller and more delicate than the well known Scottish Bagpipes.
I would recommend watching Speedway in Nazareth, the live version with Emmylou Harris. I’m sure you would love that one.
Whith a great "Crescendo" on the final part of the song.
Masterpiece as many other of the Maestro.
Another great video to watch on a Friday after a hard weeks work. Calling Mark Knopfler hobbit-like was a great chuckle. 😄 thanks!
It's actually a low whistle rather than a flute.

Спасибо!
Thank you! 🙏
