Jimmy Barnes, the singer you said had spent some time in a Black church, has definitely been influenced by Black gospel and soul. He named one of his daughters after Mahalia Jackson, and he has also been very influenced by the likes of Sam and Dave and Tina Turner. He actually did a duet version of Simply the Best with Tina in the early 1990s that manages to be better than the original. He and Tina go toe to toe vocally in it. It's worth checking out. 😊
Thank you for that - now you have dipped your toes into legendary Aussie music I hope you listen to more - 'Cold Chisel' great Aussie band and Jimmy Barnes legendary singer - (my fav all time singer) been listening to him with the band and solo from my teens to 60's - You could try a cover of 'Wild Thing' live version with Cold Chisel - or a more recent song by Jimmy Barnes featuring Joe Bonamassa (US guitarist) - 'Stone Cold' - fantastic song
It’s funny you say he’s been in a church…..he’s no church folk but his daughter is named after a gospel singer who played a slave he watched in a movie! He resonated with her character! 😀
Jimmy Barnes who you compared to Little Richard is an Australian Legend a song of his that I know you will really enjoy is Jimmy Barnes Stone Cold featuring Joe Bonamassa. Joe kills it on the guitar.
Jimmy Barnes loved the soul/Motown scene of the 60s. The vocal style was a huge influence on him. He did a song with Tina Turner in the 80s called “Simply the Best”.
The one you need to watch is them doing wild thing the last stand version live and amazing guitarist Ian moss who you just herd singing ans Jimmy barnes is the main singer who went solo later on this is them in earlier day as a group mossy and Jimmy both match the guitar to voice and you'll hear someone screaming and mossy matches with guitar 🎸 Cheers for playing our guys 🦘🇦🇺👍 Ps Jimmy from my home town was born with it With a lots of scotch 1 to 2 bottles and hard pub rock He was a wild man not adverse to get into a middle of a brawl Played in bikie pubs held his own going by my friends
You really should react to Cold Chisel "Khe Sanh". Thanks for playing this. A very under rated band on the world stage, but every Australian loves them. I just subscribed.
Jimmy Barnes definitely was a huge fan of James Brown and black soul music generally. Many reactors have observed how rare it is to see a white man with these pipes!!
Australia has a wealth of bands and singers like this that the US just never heard of during the 70s-90s because whenever they DID go over, they were told to change to "fit" the US sensibilities. Cold chisel told the Label that brought them over for a try out to F%CK OFF and wrote a song about it called "You got Nothing I want, You got Nothing I need". Same shit happened to Sky hooks, Angels Ice house, Midnight Oil, etc. The only ones who were able to keep their "sound" were AC/DC and INXS, and INXS were only able to do so because David Bowie told the record label to back of and don't touch them or else.
Fascinating seeing your reaction to this, and glad you enjoyed it. Jimmy Barnes is an excellent singer and Cold Chisel an excellent live band. From the same tour, there is a video on TH-cam called ‘When The War Is Over’: this really highlights the talent of the band doing a stripped back version of one of their popular ballad songs. Also, Jimmy’s high/restrained backing vocal really highlights the control he has over his voice and highlights his skill/talent as a vocalist. I’d highly recommend watching it - even if you don’t do a ‘react’ video of it (though would love to see your reaction to it!) Thanks for the video!
Jimmy Barnes, still going strong well into his 60s, recently did concerts here in New Zealand. He's world famous in Australiasia. He's Scottish in case you're interested.....those Aissies claim everyone as their own !!
Lol, New Zealand is in our constitution too! Seventh state of Australia? 🤪 Jimmy came here as a kid and grew up here. You Lot have Neil and Tim, who made lots of money in Australia…😉 Just kidding of course, I love our cousins across the ditch!
You want to hear some real soul music check out ,When something is wrong with my baby , a duet with Jimmy Barns and John Farnham and a little Johnny Diesel thrown in .
So many musicians in the UK and Australia adore the music that came from Black 'Americans. Blues, Soul, Gospel, there's no question it heavily influenced Rock n Roll, and the subsequent Australian Pub Rock.
He is aussie, listened to Sam and Dave, on long car journeys between gigs. Went solo and did 2 soul albums. Recently did a duet with Sam Moore, called Soothe Me.. it is on yt.
Cold Chisel did a version of "Wild Thing " which is better than the original, I swear. It is the best of Aussie rock and is fire. They do so many different styles and have a back catalogue of music that satisfies everyone's taste.
Should be famous worldwide but when they were about to break the US market they didn't like the way the business was run. So like good Aussie boys they told them to f off and came back home and wrote the song you got nothing I want 😊
David Blight the guy with the harmonica, built his own Distortion Box, you might have seen how guitarists tap that box on the floor with their foot while playing
Great that you mentioned little Richard and James Brown both big influences on Jimmy although perhaps his biggest idol and influence was Wilson pickett
We may not have had a lot of soul music in Australia, but at least our greatest artists were being inspired by the songs from america that were popularised here, we had some really fascinating mixes of genres that all revolve around the importance of live performance, some of the greatest live acts in history came out of Australia in the 70's all the way through to the late 90's.
I'm going to bow down to Bow River and Cold Chisel. These guys have somehow released my shadow rocker. Never listened to this type of music when i was young, but OMG am i a fan now. Especially of Jimmy Barnes. Still love my Bee Gees, but these guys here have a special vibe. Thanx for the reaction
Sydney in the 80s had about 160 live music venues, and maybe 100 or more Aussies bands. We went out literally every Saturday night to different pubs all across Sydney for raw, brutal and beautiful music. It was the best time of my life. This concert was much later, about 2005-6. I saw this concert at Universal Studios in Sydney.
Yep, they definitely got influenced by soul and rnb. If you check out any other Cold Chisel, you'll hear the way the lead singer (Jimmy Barnes) sings hey, yeah, and his squawls (screams) to sound like James Brown 🤎
@@PickpocketJones with that harmonica, in this specific song, for sure. But vocally, and generally speaking, much more rnb, soul, and gospel.

I used to go to the pub every weekend before chisel got huge here, great times, pub was packed every weekend, then went to every one of their big concerts too and last stand, when they broke up, chisel were the best 🥰🥰
Hey man I'm from the same town as these guys and Jimmy Barnes, the singer is influenced by Little Richard and Mahalia Jackson and he learned to sing in the church choir so you're right he spent plenty of time listening to black gospel music...good call!😊
The lead singer is Jimmy Barnes, have a read about him, he is a Scottish Australian. I just looked up where bow River is, I'm Aussie I thought I should know this! haha Bow River is a 148-kilometre (92 mi) long tributary of the Ord River in the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia. The river was named by pastoralist Michael Durack in 1882 after the Bow River in his family's ancestral home of County Clare, Ireland.
Not sure if its been said already but Jimmy (the dude with the big voice) went on tour with Aretha Franklin across the U.S back in the day. This band is in the dna of every Aussie. Same for John Farnham, Johny Diesel, Crowded House, Screaming Jets, The Angels and i could go on. Also 90% of our rock bands started off in pubs, even AC/DC did. Always great to see our American cousins discovering and enjoying what is part of the life blood that runs thru our veins. Great video man.
Nice observation about Jimmy's style being reminiscent of Little Richard. On reflection, I can hear that. Thanks for pointing this out. Regards from Sydney Australia.
Don't make assumptions i.e. "He definitely been around some black church folk." because you look silly when your are way off the mark. Jimmy Barnes was born in Scotland, migrated to Adelaide Australia when he was young and he has been singing this way since he joined the band at age 17. He didn't visit the USA until Cold Chisel toured briefly in 1981, eight years into the life of the band, when Jimmy was 25. He picked up his style from listening to his older brother's and sister's records, not from people singing in church (there are very few "black church folk" in Australia), though he may have heard the odd gospel song. Also the lyric you liked is "the money I've saved", not "seen".

Absolutely. I’m a bit perplexed where the whole “gospel stuff” is coming from. He probably could have been a damn good “gospel singer”, but by self admission, he was more of a sinner than a saint. Thank God for that. Aussie music would have been robbed of a legend if he had followed the straight and narrow path. I very much doubt that Jimmy was sitting at home as a youngster, trying to mimic “Gospel Music”. 😂
