- Bon Appetit's Andrew Knowlton works a 24-hour shift at Waffle House. The first Waffle House diner opened in Atlanta, Georgia in 1955. Today, the chain restaurant has more than 1,700 locations in 25 states, mostly in the South. Waffle House is known for being open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Knowlton's full day on the job starts a little before 7 AM. All Waffle House employees must be either clean-shaven or wear a beard guard, so Knowlton decides to shave the beard. Once Knowlton has his uniform, his on-the-job training an orientation begins. He gets to work making bacon, eggs, waffles, Texas toast, and hash browns.
During his down time, Knowlton sits down with Waffle House co-founder, Tom Forkner to learn more about the eatery's history.
One of the daily tasks at Waffle House for employees is mixing waffle batter using a power drill attached to a whisk. From there, Knowlton powers through the lunch shift into the evening hour dinner rush and well into late night.
As early morning approaches again, Knowlton has lost all track of time but has gained appreciation and admiration for all Waffle House employees.

CAN I PLEASE GET A WAFFLE
🤣🤣
fun fact: the guy in the vine wasn't actually at the restaurant when that happened and he just recorded his voice over the video. still funny tho.
He looks like idubbbz mixed with johnny knoxville after shaving.
He kinda looked like Steve Carell with the beard and glasses
Walt he looks a bit like kylie Jenner imo
That's what I though
Katie Hatton gggg
Walt to me he looks like John Mayer mixed with John Oliver after shaving
I did 18 hours straight at Waffle House back in 1998. It was Christmas Day and there was nobody to show up for work except myself who had been on the job for a month, and one waitress. We managed to make it work, even though we were completely slammed. I have so much respect for these people.
respect!
omega tipshare
That sounds like as hard a day as you can get, but I bet you made a lot of money that day too
Respect for you too. Someone got to eat on Christmas that might not've figured things out thanks to you. Bet not many people will know that kind of gratification.
Same scenario I was at Dennys tho
"If you see a Waffle House, it's open". Damn right. Filled my belly many times at 3am.
I thought he said, "If you see a Waffle House, it's OLD."
Minority Nomad I thought he said, "if you see a Waffle House, pull over"

I thought he said, "if you see a Waffle House, pull OUT "

I lost it at "I'm Shorty"
Vendzor that’s messed up
I wonder why they call him that
ItchyButtCheecks grow up man
That sigh of relief when he gets in the car, I think every person whose ever worked in a restaurant knows that feeling.
Yup. And the day you sigh your last restaurant sigh will be a great day.
omg yes
I legit just went to Waffle House and shorty was my server
Walker H aaaand then everyone clapped
its true I was their left shoe
Thanks Brian Williams
@@misskwannie Because nobody lives in Atlanta or goes to waffle house
Griffin F I live in Atlanta lmao
shorty wasn't having his shit tho
Respect for everyone who works 24-hour shifts!
it's illegal so it's their choice in the end.
*Respek
+Kristovq i've had a 14 hour shift thats as close as i have ever had to 24 hours
+Gabriel Rosales I did 15 hours at domino's, worst day ever lol
Carl Clark Me was at a mexican butcher shop or carniceria on a sunday
Just gonna let him drive himself home after a 24 hour shift? Sheesh.
+Jack Walsh thats what I thought
I worked a 24 hour shift a couple weeks ago. My car smelled like WH for a good couple days and almost fell asleep while driving. Even after just 14 hours its hard to drive
In the UK employers aren't allowed to make you work longer than 14 hours per day. It's dangerous. Only police, fire brigade etc can work longer..or self employed.
They probably had someone drive him home. You can hear he still had his microphone attached so at the very least they would have needed to take him out of the car to remove it before he left. They just wanted a nice final shot.
Jen Dark Energy 384400 you do realize this is a show right? It’s not a normal shift
once I went waffle house eating bacon and a worker came behind me and said you better eat that bacon miss.piggy didn't die for nothing
Twenty one Panic potato lol
I once had a drunk at 2 in the morning literally walk up behind a police officer who is eating his All-Star with bacon and ask isn't that cannibalism?
Heyyyyy Danny Devito. How are you doing. You are such a great actor. I loved you as the father in Matilda, Penguin in Batman, Twin in Twins, the husband in that movie where your wife was taken for ransom, and so many other movies.
@@freeandblessed8500 It isn't actually him
@@Kendicklame-ar yes it is
It ain't a waffle House without the ever present police sirens
Or if the cook isn't smoking a cigarette when you arrive
Worked at WH for a year. Its hell behind the counters. Especially weekend nights (drunks)
I work at a bar on the weekends. the struggle is too real.
Yeah its a factory job but pays double so can't complain
Restaurants are only hard in the kitchen...unless you are bad at handling people....being front end at a restaurant is like being a cop without any authority...think about that lmao
they pay less even though its a tip job and plus its so dirty
Belatorius i used to work there for close to a year was fun as a server and a cook
1:28 i just wanted to bring attention to how he introduced himself with a subtle shoulder touch and a handshake. Such a simple yet effective method of introducing yourself to people and making them instantly comfortable with your presence. great job.
I worked at Huddle House as a cook for a few months back when I was like 19 years old. I worked lunch and dinner (never breakfast, my manager knew i wasn't experienced enough for that insanity). It wasn't that bad of a job, i could easily handle about 5 different orders on the grill at once, but one calm evening, about 8pm. My older brother and my friend was up there chilling wit me and then a fleet of cars filled the parking lot up (12+ cars). It was a rush of family members dressed in black attire from a Funeral coming to eat. my brother and friend started laughing, while i was sweating bullets of anxiety knowing that it was about to be the death of me R.I.P. I was the only cook and the waitresses did not cook. I called my manager and told her the situation, she said "just do what you can, good luck". Every single set of eyes in the restaurant was on me (fuck). I handled most of the orders with ease, but when some waitresses write sloppy, ALL hell breaks loose throws you out of rythym quickly. So much noise, people gossiping, music in the ceiling, phone ringing off the hook, loud dishes clanking, custom food orders, waitresses saying they need this, they need that. Every sq. in. of the grille slap full of All kinds of food, 7 new tickets always appearing above your head, door bell ringing from MORE hungry fucking people coming in. There were people standing because ALL seats in the whole building were taken. ALL eyes on me (people confused, with only being 1 cook there, as well as people knowing that I was screwed). Cheapskate owners not willing to pay 2. It was any cooks worst nightmare, a fucking warzone. I had an applause from a few people with people cheering me on, and complimenting my neat plates and good food which gave me a bit more confidence. (good crowd of people). i was an organized cook by nature, neat sandwiches, drain oil off food before plating it, neatly sliced veggies. While I would smile at the customers from time to time, crack a quick joke with a waitress, The only true thing I kept thinking about was the clock because I knew my replacement cook was to show up at 9pm. And she was a veteran cook. After i knocked out all of the funeral crowd, cars still continued to pull up. The clock went 15 min past 9pm so we gave her a call and she said her car wouldn't start. (probably lying). I had to be the hero (again) and cover her shift, worked 16 hours straight for a low $8/hour. cleaned a shit load of dishes, scrubbed the grille shiny clean, restocked everything, so much cleaning all around afterwards. Dead tired, I quit after my shift ended. Told them straight up, that I wasn't coming back. Wasnt gonna wait around for a potential .50 cent raise later or anymore of that place. That night ruined my nerves for cooking jobs. i havent had one since then. The money did not equal the labor/stress. I have a lot of respect for people who can handle it though while still putting out quality food in a timely matter. Don't matter how quick you are, if the plate looks messy, food don't taste good or is cold, you aren't worth shit as a cook remember that. With all being said, it was an experience that I'll always remember, and I still enjoy to cook as a passionate hobby.
Zach K I’m just not gonna read this
I worked at waffle House and you don't get tickets they call it out to you
Who ever read all of that 👍🏼 good for you
Wow reading that was intense.
What u do now as a job
I don't think he's in any state to drive, wtf??

Waffle House in Atlanta: *like grandmas house*
Waffle House in my city: *frat house mixed with meth trailer*
I worked at Walmart for a time never in the food industry but man if your working with someone like shorty or if you’re working with a good friend you just genuinely have fun with your shifts will absolutely fly by
honestly when the people are good, and the work is enjoyable, working long shifts like this goes by so fast and can actually be fun?? Like working 8 or 9 hours with no one there is terrible, but once people are there it goes by so fast
how is that a question??
I believe they are on mobile and just accidentally put question marks as opposed to exclamation points...
Same in retail - when it's dead you're watching the clock/bored out of your mind, when it's busy it gets fast & fun
As a former grill Op at a waffle house in Northern Louisiana i have a couple of issues with this.
1. He got a break (there are no breaks at the waffle house unless you smoke.)
2. He was sitting waiting during the shift
3. He used a drill whisk to make batter (its all in the forearm burn)
4. The waitresses were nice when they asked for their food a second time
5. Empty seats during a rush?
6. Why aint he cleaning? Hes gotta brush the floor
7. He got off on time???????????????
otherwise pretty accurate. Hes lucky he got out of there without a meth addiction.
LOL I’m a grill op in Virginia and I relate
Actually depends where you are you do get breaks
Just like some restaurants have a single employee to go do prep
I like Waffle House once in a while. But overall the place is a mental institution and depressing so I’ll go like once every 2 years
It clearly showed him cleaning though...
waffle house is the best place to go when youre high as hell at 3 am
hahaha

He looks like the love-child of Mark Ruffalo and Johnny Knoxville. As a GA native, Waffle House is one of our gifts to the world... You're welcome, drunks!
Jester JLay there was 100 likes on this and I didn’t want to ruin the perfect number but I had to make it 101 likes because it is such a beautiful gift
I moved to MD and I miss it so much
I honestly think he looks better without a beard
Yassss hitting up Waffle House after the club is a must!!
Thanks Daddy
"I've seen a gun 5 times in my life and 3 of them were at the Waffle House." Jim G.
I've never been to a Waffle House where they loved their job and did their best to put out quality food. I wish I had.
Amocoru I have! They were sooo nice. And they liked to make conversation with the customers.
With a 24h shift I would hardly put a smile on my face and do my job with enthusiasm, physically is almost impossible.
The cameras rolling too...so..
hahaha this is exactly what i thought when he was talking about that near the end of the video
I always see junkies at chik fil a
5:37 exactly how i look at customers after I’ve pulled a double shift 😂😂😂
Can I get a waffle?!, CAN I PLEASE GET A WAFFLE?!??!!
“I just need my chocolate chip waffle” oh okay
fact that could save your life: Waffle houses are some of the best places to go during nuclear war, zombie apocalypse, a large scale war, and any natural disaster because waffle houses are in fact stocked with extra food and water because the CEO of the Waffle house company says each Waffle house must have extra food and water. STAY ALIVE
Danny N but we can’t lock the front doors sooooo.....
Alex Winchester barricade them
The front doors have locks on them😂idk why bc they’re not used but we have locks on our doors
Oh not to mention we are open 365 no matter the weather, date or time if a hurricane happens the waffle house will be open the next day, I have been told there is a team or they will get a team to drive down there and get the waffle house in working condition unless it is not standing or is under water then they will find another waffle house to fix to help that area.
@ Bon Appetit's Andrew Knowlton,
Is driving after a 24-hour shift really a good idea?
I was about to laugh but I realized how serious this is.
ive fell asleep in traffic too many times. overworking is a serious issue
when I had to do mine my manager told us we had to have someone pick us up
No, it;s the equivalent of driving having drunk half a bottle of scotch (or something like that)
No lie. I LOVE "The Waffle House". I grew up poor in rural Arkansas and we used to go to our local Waffle House for a treat.
My favorite item was the salad with chilli and ranch dressing.
And the pecan waffle.
And the patty melt burger with hash browns and chili on it.
And the hash browns. Scattered, Smothered, Chunked, Topped, and Diced.
Jeez. No wonder I was a fat kid.
Lol I feel ur love... btw, don't need to call ur self fat :)
I was born in Arkansas where are you talking about?
Hugh Mungus i’m from benton right here😂 definitely my go to 2 a.m drunk food or hangover food
you have good taste in waffle house cuisine
Make sure you ask your server to stir the chili or gravy before they put it on your food. Some don't care and will get you half a ladle of dried top layer chili
Waffle house... Where you go in the morning when you're drunk
I've been to Waffle House, and only known that I was at Waffle House because I found receipts in the morning. It is Mecca for the inebriated.
*af
Been working as a server at a Waffle House for a little over a week now, I can say out of my three serving jobs this one has kept me focused and busy more than any other. I love it.
Are you still there?
I wouldn't mind seeing a series like this again... This is cool. Much respect.
At 0:44 did anyone else here a lady say "hot digidy dog?"
I watched this one and the Katz's deli episode and I thought it was so nice how his wife and daughters came in to eat and be part of the experience. Lucky guy.
I went to my local one this morning and they were talking about how things might get rough for them and my waitress was worried that she might have a job soon. Waffle House workers keep the world turning. They deserve to get paid good wages and benefits. People in food service deserve more respect.
A reason I love watching these videos is seeing so many different people come together!
Damn he looks SOOO effing cute without the beard!!! From hobo to cutest guy in town!!! Yee haw!!
Death note

I've had several years experience at Waffle House and this video perfectly encapsulates my entire experience. Well done
"They love their job. And they care about the food they're putting out."
Definitely NOT the Waffle Houses I've been to. Not that I don't like Waffle House....
PK
Even when I go to a waffle house where they dont care about what food they are putting out, it still tastes better than a lot of other places. Cleanliness is not a part of the Waffle House experience though, sadly.
I work at Waffle House and I love my job
TINY_TIGERS the people at WH that I worked with were incredibly rude. I believe me and my cook were the only ones who really cared.
Genesis Aguilar how
Love this series!!! Please continue to make more or a spin-off similar!!!!
He scrubbed the metal with the grill brick lol...

this show is such a brilliant idea and it's so fun to watch.. I wish BA would shoot more episodes with Andrew!
Bring this series back!!
Never been to a clean Waffle House
same here
Not much a chance to clean it when it's open 24 hours
If you ever walk into a clean Waffle House, turn around and walk back out. Don't trust that shit.
? kind
Tina Perkins only clean it because they want the views to think it as a good appearance
Love the music in this clip
WE NEED MORE OF THESE....
Wish there were more of these videos!
Thank you Bon Appetit for this series!
hard working people deserve a better quality gov't.
We all need to know our nation cares more about lives than profits (don't hold your breath).
The sweet tea was named after my grandma.
This was a fantastic video.
Love the series
Longest WH shift I ever took was 18 hours. Not sure I'd be able to get 6 more in! But I didn't take any breaks either, probably because I would fallen asleep
everyone seemed so nice ive never been to one but i want to go
Shawty ain't playing! Great vid...great team.
Mmmm 😋 smothered and covered hasbrowns ... I love how they serve hash browns with everything on thier menu 😋
"I made $30,000 making this video and Shorty made $180 and he won't even acknowledge me"
If you find a good waffle house their food is really quite good. Love the pecan waffles and the smothered hash browns.
Oh man, I do miss the pecan waffles.
I've taken a few long driving trips through the years and I ate some meals at the Waffle House. I loved the chili and the smothered Hash Browns. To the WH employees, thank you!
Great video!
"If you see a Waffle House, it's open." That is is their key. Plus, the butter.
Wow, he looks much much younger after shaving!
Man first Waffle House I've seen where the cooks where gloves lol. 😂😂
Wear*
Actually you're not required to wear gloves in the kitchen at food establishments based on US law. The only time you need to wear gloves is if your handling raw meat and switching between multiple stations. Otherwise you are allowed to wash your hands every time between stations without gloves. I worked at Five Guys and we had to wear gloves based on company policy. Some restaurants, like Waffle House may not require it since it's up to the company to decide yes and pay extra for disposable gloves or no.
Andrew has grown so much seeing his newer videos
Can we get this back I loved this series. Bring it back.
I stumbled across this video again and I hated working at Waffle House I worked there for over a year and a half
It wasn’t Waffle House as a corporation it was really my coworkers and the people who came to the one I worked at
That probably felt so good when he got in his car lmao
I always loved sitting at the bar, it was like dinner and a show!
another great video!
Waffle House was the first thing I saw after leaving the airport my first time in the US (Dallas) and I insisted on going there, having no actual idea what it was.
Now it's a thing my dad and I do every time I visit.
They even sold me a coffee mug!
I wanna see “Working 24 hours straight “ at Checkers
Look at how nice the employees are to each other; that’s dope
Me and my family always go there when we go on vacation and need an early breakfast!
I miss my nigga shorty 😿😿
What happened to him?
WAS CROSSING THE ROAD AND A 18 WHEELER DROVE RIGHT OVER HIM LIKE CLEAR OVER HIM DIDNT EVEN TOUCH HIM...THEN A SMART CAR BEHIND THE 18 WHEELER HIT HIM.... R.I.P SHORTY

I am a salesperson at Waffle House and work 10-17 hour shifts on a regular basis. Yes I stay exhausted but the work is rewarding.
+Katherine Fuqua good for ya
It's so relaxing to watch this episode 😌
this is such a cool restaurant to work in. workers are socializing and everything makes it a cool enviroment
"I can't hear you" says it 3 times... Last time shouting uses same voice as 2nd one...
2:56 well you can only account for two of the three sir
what was the 3rd thing.. what did he say
Cleanliness
Its fun That shorty wanted to give him a high five and he gave him a low five🤣🤣
So this is where y'all got the idea for 24hrs at a place. Its fantastic series, and Andrew the perfect person to do it.
