I love your videos. They bring a tear to my eye. I grew up near East L.A. and you remind me of my dear friends and families. I "adopted" an abuelita next door who fed me beans and tortillas in the morning (when I dropped in as a five-year-old) and taught me to make tamales. It was a wonderful part of my childhood. When she died in her nineties the family asked me if I wanted something of hers. I took her very old and well-used molcajete and keep it on my kitchen counter.
I've never heard of champurrado and I'll be honest, i had to google piloncillo and i feel ashamed i have never really looked into mexican/latino recipes, but i would appreciate if you would let your mom know how grateful i am that she has 2 beautiful daughters that have graciously shared their love and knowledge of the recipes of their heritage. Thank you.
There are so many variations on this. There are varying thicknest, I like it like a Hot, spiced, thick hot chocolate, no thicker than pepto bismol. And as you leave the masa or flour? sitting in it, it gets Thicker. I have had it where it was almost like "thin" cream of weat" and they gave me a spoon with my cup. Sometimes used a breakfast to at work in the morning. I Don't want my champurdo that thick. (still tasty though, just the "wrong" thickness for me.) There are Varying spices and amounts of spices/blends of spices used, (some can get too strong and throw things off. Like too much star anise, or to much Clove.) Clove is So strong, I'm thinking of using only one "stem" and only in boiling "water" for 5 to 15 minutes and then removing. I used 1 "stem" in 5 quarts of hot drink, And You could totally tell it was in there. Not too strong but you didn't miss it either, it was good, but I also had left it in simmering for an hour and a half,(longer?) and never removed it and that one clove gave 5 quarts of drink Plenty of good flavor. Clove is so strong and "liquorice flovored" star anise is strong too, I think they could quickly take over, I think that was a problem with one batch of champurrdo that I had?) You can Often/Usually get the Pilloncillo, the "masa flour" Our I guess "unusally the wheat flour" in the recipe, And the Mexican chocolate discs "usually used" in champurado at a dollor store/99 cent store and often even some mexican cinamon sticks, (tasty!) if you do not have a "mexican market" by you. I have not been able to get down to the border the last to seasons to get my champurrado while walking around the cold, high desert. I will be making my first batch here soon. I will be taking ideas from several "internet recipies" and my own ideas. I just hope I don't make it too thick. Too, Bland, or to out of ballance with the strong seasonings, (like the Clove, or maybe the star anise could get too strong and "off balance" fast, or maybe No star anise. :-)) I recomend you give it a try. Come up with a good batch and you, your family and friends should love it. Well at least if they sometimes enjoy hot chocolate. Good Luck. And if you try buying a cup while you are out. remember, there are all kinds of versions out there, some you will love, some might disapoint you, (especially if it is not like the one that you "love") Try it from a few different places.
Thank you so much for ALL the recipes you teach us. My mom didn’t have the patience to teach me much in the kitchen because I was always afraid of fire (gas stove). I would whine alot so it was my fault. My sister was more aventada and she learned 😂. I live out of state quite far from my mom, sis & family. Been married 3 years now and you have saved me. My husband is very happy with what I cook. My secret weapon is your TH-cam channel. Mil gracias, I’ve been following all this time.
I imagine you've probably been asked this before... But... Cook books? To have all these recipes be put on record to never be lost would be so wonderful. So many of these recipes I've seen being made from scratch is very valuable. Let alone a recipe like this being passed on from your great grandmother. I have very little recipes like that myself. Thank you very much for sharing your family's recipes. It means a lot. :)
My daughter asked if we have all the ingredients. I said “yes”and she said “yes”. Thank you for sharing your recipe. I can’t wait to make it for my family.
When I started watching this video a few minutes ago I weighed 130 lbs now I weigh 136. Cannot imagine what I’ll weigh went I actually drink it. You ladies are amazing. Thank you for your hospitality, warmth and most of all your recipes.
Thank you for bringing back the memory of my grandmother making champurado. I tried finding the recipe but only found the one with corn masa. Even my mom did not know my grandma used flour and toasted it. I knew because I spent countless hours with her in her kitchen and saw her cook. I love watching you cook and I am a 72 year old born and raised in San Antonio, Texas and you have shown me how to cook foods I grew up eating. Covid -19 has made me self quarantine and I found you by serendipity. I love how you interact with your children and I share your love for KDramas and countless other things.
Original champurrado uses nixtamalized masa or corn flour instead. In the north of the country we brown the corn flour the same way. There are other regions where pinole is used as well. 😊
I made it last night after my kids cane back after going out truck or treating. It got cold here in Texas last night. I warmed up my kids with your drunk and they where so happy. My mom was so surprised how good it came out. That you for all your recipes fir this single dad with full custody.
hi from austin texas 🤘🏼 i still can't find a restaurant nor taco truck that serves this. was told closer to christmas... we shall see. thank you single day, for making these memories for your babies!
My daughter is 12 and made this for her virtual culinary arts class. The topic was favorite recipes from her culture. We are learning together and this mama is loving it! Thank you for sharing your recipes. 🥰
My kids are half Puerto Rican and half Mexican and for the longest they’ve been asking me to make champurrado like their (Mexican) grandma (RIP) but we kept searching and couldn’t find anything similar. That is, until we came across yours and I’m like guys! I think we found a winner! I can’t wait to surprise them with this recipe on the weekend! Thank You for sharing your amazing recipes!
I’ve never followed any recipes before. Since the quarantine I’ve been looking up recipes (especially for Mexican dishes and drinks) and I have begun trying them and keeping the ones I like. Thank you guys for taking the time to show us your cooking step by step.
Looking forward to try. Been about 40 to 50 years since I've had this. My grandmother use to make it for us! I love the banter going on between you two girls! Thank you! My grandmother was from Michuacan,Mexico. Lived in Illinois.
Can I make a suggestion.......can you try changing out the light above the stove from a yellow bulb to a white bulb. It's hard to tell the true colors of the food your cooking because the yellow light distorts it. I'm a novice chef and I need to be able to see things in their true colors to be able to judge what I'm cooking. Most of the restaurants I have worked in had fluorescent lighting so it allows everything good white light to properly see. Just a suggestion, not a big deal if you can't, but I just wanted to throw that out there.
1) If you're relying on light bulbs to help with your cooking, your problem isn't with the lighting. 2) This is a home kitchen, not a professional one, and the yellow bulb is standard to home kitchens, as it probably is in yours. 3) Even if you really are a "novice chef," you're probably making this at home, not in a professional kitchen run by an actual chef with his own menu, so the whole flourescent lighting thing is irrelevant. 4) The lighting in the rest of her kitchen, and in all home kitchens, isn't the same as in a profession kitchen either. How do any of us manage to do anything but boil water? 5) But, if the bulb above your own stove isn't the same as in the video, and if it's really that important to you, how about you change it to match the one in video? Why expect someone else to exert more effort than you are just to make your life easier?
@@susangarland6869 because it's a cooking tutorial channel. Steph asks for suggestions all the time to improve her channel. This is a small suggestion that could yield big results. Posing over a small lightbulb is silly.
@PQSusan SD and now the trolls come out. If you dont like my suggestion you can shove it. That's all it was was a suggestion. Yellow lighting in home settings is ok for cooking because our eyes can easily adjust but when your watching a video with yellow lighting it throws it off. It was a harmless suggestion. Geezus people get so butt hurt over the stupidest sh**. Are you really trying to come after me over a light bulb?! Lol
First and most importantly Please tell your mom we are praying for her. Gods in control hun. I love how you put family first. Your mom raises you well. Thank you so much for this recipe can’t wait to try it , you girls rocks! Your sister cloud is so funny and sweet. You both make a great team.
Those small mesh strainers are so helpful in the kitchen. I have four different sizes one for any job. I think they are underated. Like you I make a lot of homemade food and they really are one of my favorite tools in the kitchen.
Ok, update today Sunday 23, I made your champurrado recipe. Those who tried it loved it, I loved it too. So now because of your great grandma and you this will be the way I make this. It will be one of the holiday traditions served for those who love a good smooth treat! Gracias por todo.
This look greats. My grandfather's family is from Mexico city. As kids we grew up drinking Atole, and Champurrado. But we make it completely different. The Atole is more watery , a thinner chocolate, super good. I make Atole through out the cold months for my kiddos. But Champurrado, i save for days like Christmas Eve, and Christmas because I make it super rich. As kids my Abuelo always made it with cornmeal. I never cared for the cornmeal. So he started making it with grounded oatmeal. So yummy and so rich. We use cannela as our base. Our chocolate is very cinnamon base...super good...
I bought champurrado from a restaurant here in my small town and it was so good. I'm so excited to make this sometime. You made it seem easy and the dialogue between you and your sister was so sweet. Reminds me of my family. Thank you for sharing!
I'm so excited. I had this as a kid and couldn't remember the name. We happened to find the name, so I ran to my favorite lady for all things Mexicano. ❤❤❤woo-hoo. So excited to try yours.
Thank you to you and your mom for sharing this recipe. I've been needing this in my life! This is officially my first pregnancy craving, I can't wait to make this for my family. Sending prayers your way.🙏
Taste just like my mom made this for I n my siblings back in the 60's n 70 ' s. Now i always make it my self for my family. Grandkids love n my vietnamese hubby loves it.
My mom always made este chocolate we all love it but she passed away and we never got the recipe, but I remembered she made it with flour, and now that I’m watching you toast the flour it just came back to me that this was exactly how she used to make it!! Thank you for sharing,,
Thank you so much for the recipe. Tastes just like the champurrado my grandma and great grandma used to make. They were from Sonora. Brought tears to my eyes and great memories of them. Thank you!
I’ve been off since Thursday feels good to just kick back and flipping Chanel’s as I try to keep busy cleaning and finding something to eat for me and my adult son from Fresno California
Thank you Stephanie for sharing your family's recipe. I've always wanted to, but other people never cared to share their recipes. Now, I have an amazing one....Yes!!
Delicioso! Thank you for sharing. Champurrado was mom's lure to get me to church LOL this was a fun memory. (i no longer need food to lure me to church)🙏GOD BLESS you girls. Feliz Navidad🎄🎄Will try this recipe and report back
I'm so excited to try this, I have wanted to try it for a long time, but wanted an authentic experience. You are so sweet to share your families recipes with us!!!
I have had it made with the corn flour and now I have to have it with regular flour, omg the nutty goodness that comes with toasting the flour! Def going try it now! Thanks for sharing your great grandmothers liquid love!
Sooooo you just saved me from having an argument with my 80 year old mother. I made champurrado tonight with maseca per usual when she had the audacity to say it wasn’t champurrado bc it wasn’t made with flour. Me very confused searching all over the internet’s y nada de champurrado con AP flour so this is gonna make her extremely happy when I show up next week with the real deal champurrado ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Omg I made this this morning 11-28-2019. My husband loved it and so did my family. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. Now it’s my family recipe. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I'm proud of you too amiga. It takes a little time at the beginning of everything. with patience and step by step, you'll build the confidence to just roll with it. Happy holidays 💕
My children and I cooked champurrado for the very first time. We was watching your video over and over and over. It's done and I put the cups to cool off. I wish to thank you for putting up this video with the flour as the ingredient and not the maseca. My dad tried teaching me how to make it. But era muy burra and I guess I am a visual learner. I can't ask him for the receta anymore as he no longer with me. So I turned to TH-cam for some solutions on cooking. I just found your video yesterday. So again thank you for putting this video up. It's 2020 while the world is going through this crazy Pandemic. I know I will learn to cook authentic Mexican dishes as long as I follow a video recipe. We here in Glendale, AZ bout to enjoy this delicious champurrado.
thank you for this video. My mom used to make this and I couldn't remember how she made it. I only remember she would toast the flour. I've looked for it and finally found it. thank you so much!
Nothing like a little love to make something fun. I love this recipe. People forget the many uses that brown flour can do. It give's off a nutty flavor.
This looks delicious 😋 It reminds me of a drink my great grandma made to settle upset tummy aches, I think it had nutmeg as well in it. She was the first generation to come to USA. She was a laborer at the Wright Farm in New Mexico. Unfortunately as she assimilated to citizenship she never shared the language or recipes. How time has changed, I would love to be able to speak and share recipes. You and Cloud give such appreciated history of the woman who gave life to this country. Prayers to you and your mom.
Ever since I started watching your videos my husband notices the difference lol! I couldn't cook para nada lol! Now I can press replay to get it right. I made your menudo and posole dam I was impressed! Thank you so much bc my grandma didn't teach me and my mom was always working.
I made this on Saturday morning. I decided to use oatmeal instead of flour cause I try to keep away from it. I blended it after it boiled with all other ingredients. It was delicious. Thank you!
I made this and it came out so good!! I wanted to test it out, because I’m planning on making this for Christmas. My family loved it and it was so smooth. My brother said it was like a hot smoothie. Lol, but he loved it and was dipping cookies in it. Definitely going to make this for Christmas. Thank you for sharing.
Just an FYI- Cloves are dried, unopened flower buds, rather than sticks. This looks yummy. Thank you for the recipe and another informative video. If you mix just a bit of hot liquid into the cocoa, mix to melt, then add into the rest of the pot of hot milk. This will prevent lumps.
oh so yummy...I had forgotten about this recipe until my daughter-n-law reminded me of how she loved this as a teenager at my house...lol...Thanks for sharing your love of food and recipes!!!
Thank you! My great aunt made this every Christmas till she couldn't. She passed away before she shared her recipe for champurrado and besos. Besos were meringue type cookies I still haven't found a recipe for.
Thank you so much for your recipes. I find myself looking you up for any meals ideas recipes. I love following/ listening to you and your camera buddy. I will click onto your channel just to listen to your voice or just listen to you talk. I really cant stop thinking and thanking you. Your recipes came into my life when I needed the most. Thank you so much.
I tried this once at a party and it was terrible it had no flavor. and never tried it again but you are a master in the kitchen so I'm going to make your recipe I know it will taste awesome. thanks for sharing your love language with us blessings to you and your family.
WOW !!! Wow !! Every time I pick something if yours to make, it’s ALWAYS SO YUMMY. I don’t know how to cook on my own, but I can follow you so easy!!! And I know it will be yummy!!! Thank you!!!!!
Omg! I was just talking about wanting to make some homemade champurrado.. thank you for the video!!! Haven’t watched it yet but I know it will be amazing 🙌🏽
Had to share My husband asks me what I'm doing. I tell him watching Stephanie make champurrado. He gives me a weird look, apparently he has never had or heard of it. I asked him, what do you think it is? He said, "Mexican shampoo!" Lol So apparently you have graduated to making hygiene products. Lol Enjoy your evening and prayers to you all. ❤
I love your recipe it is just how I remember when I was a child, I see many recipes and all have masa and personality I don’t like it, but now I have your recipe 😃thank you so much you are my fav 👍🏼❤️
Yes!!! Thank you I was searching today for a recipe didn’t find one that some to me. I can’t wait to make it ❤️❤️ also I’m sorry about your mom god is good and I pray for fast and safe healing!!🙏🏽
I hope your Mama is doing well. You two are making her proud❤ Can't remember if my son and daughter that are in Missouri with me liked champurrado. I know their brother does and their father did. Trying to bring them good memories since they lost him and this will be their first Christmas without him.

Delicioso! Thank you for sharing. Champurrado was mom's lure to get me to church LOL this was a fun memory. (i no longer need food to lure me to church)🙏GOD BLESS you girls. Feliz Navidad🎄🎄Will try this recipe and report back
Filipino champorado is different. We use sticky rice. I’m excited to try this for Thanksgiving 😍
U should make a video n show us how to make it that sounds yummy
I’d like to see Stephanie make that kind of champorado🌸💛
Filipino champarado is delicious. My husband's mom made it for breakfast. It's like A smooth, lightly sweet creamy rice porridge with chocolate.
Like arroz con leche or is it different
Verenice Flores same but we used sticky rice, sugar and cocoa powder. Then before you serve add evaporated milk
Thank You Views in the road for teaching me how to cook. I never had anyone that taught me. Much love ❤️
Mmmm I LOVE Champorado ☕👌
I'm so excited to try this, I have wanted to try it for a long time, but wanted an authentic experience. You are so sweet to share your families recipes with us!!!
Made it tonight with my sixteen year old daughter! Nice bonding time and came out BOMB! THANKS GIRLS! YOU ROCK AS ALWAYS!!!😘
I actually went to the store today and bought all the ingredients to make some champurrado yeahhhhh! 💗💯
Don’t worry! Be happy! Be happy now! 🎶 🎵
This is amazing now I must try! 😍💯❤️
I have had it made with the corn flour and now I have to have it with regular flour, omg the nutty goodness that comes with toasting the flour! Def going try it now! Thanks for sharing your great grandmothers liquid love!
Thank you for sharing & thinking of ur momma!!!! Hope all is well
Sooooo you just saved me from having an argument with my 80 year old mother.
I LOVE champurrado, but I’ve never heard of it with flour, only mazeca. Thank you for sharing this. I have to try this!!!
My first time making tamales by myself and champurrado and it came out good ! Proud of myself thank you !!!
I'm proud of you too amiga. It takes a little time at the beginning of everything. with patience and step by step, you'll build the confidence to just roll with it. Happy holidays 💕
Views on the road yes everyone was amazed on how it came out! Happy holidays !
You should be proud of yourself🤗 THANKS for sharing your family's recipe with us😍
thank you for this video. My mom used to make this and I couldn't remember how she made it. I only remember she would toast the flour. I've looked for it and finally found it. thank you so much!
Oh yeah it's champurrado weather 😍🫖☕️
I ❤champurado ☕my mom 👵makes it on Christmas 🎄🎁🎅🤶🦌 it is so good 😋😊
Nothing like a little love to make something fun.
Tell your mom thanks because she read our minds! I cant wait to make this! Thanks!
This takes me back to my childhood and watching my Mother make this with the flour.. but she called it Atole,❤️
Thank you!
Omg we have the same champurrado recipe. I got my from my grandma. Everybody love my champurrado. THE BEST.....
I love cooking in the kitchen with my family. You give me new foods to cook with my family. I love this beverage and excited to have the recipe.

I love how you make your food with so much patience and love.....it really shows and I bet all people who try your food can taste that.
Thanks for sharing your recipes and moms recipes with us ...
I learned how to do tortillas from u girls with my grandkids! So know I’m trying this Thank you sisters

My husband asks me what I'm doing. ❤
