As a new tabletop gamer I will say this game is extremely easy to pick up. After a few turns I fully understood the game. It is now one of my favorites
Heard about this game a few months ago and wondered how to play. Only just now thought about looking up for a video on how to, and I'm glad I did as I found this. :]
This was a great video. I was on the fence about this game until I watched this, now it's on my must play/buy list! Definitely need more videos like this!
Don't know if this has been pointed out but at 7:30 there are 6 cards showing and you say that since the robber was activated one more card and you would have had to discard half your resources when in fact that's only when you have more than 7 cards. Enjoyed the video though.
7:26 Blue roles a 7 and you say, "Close call, blue! One more card and you would have had to discard half your resources." But Blue has 6 cards and one more card would have meant 7 cards. The robber only robs half your resources if you have MORE than 7 resource cards.
Nice catch! I face-palmed myself in this error only after submitting it to Sir Vasel. Kinda surprised to took this long for someone to call it out. hehe
The example provided on page 8 of the rulebook does not support this. A player's Cities and/or Settlements do not "break up" one's own road sequence ... unless it is a City/Settlement from an opposing player. (Which, in the example on page 8 of the rulebook, would be location C)
I was thinking the same thoughts, actually: how to get to showing a game's end without having it be a monotonous, hour-long video. I think I'll continue to utilize my "fast-forward" technique like I did for my Inn-Fighting how-to video. Thanks for the feedback! :)
Thanks a lot! My school has a strategy club that might play this I wanted in. Now I don't have to be the hopeless guy on the side who the players have to explain every rule too
You can't place the number chits wherever you want. You can start placing the chits wherever you want but you always have to have them in alphabetical order (letters on back) going counter clockwise around the hexes.
Playing this with my teacher and friends after school in middle school. good times. A game would definitely take longer than 30 minutes. Depends on the circumstances
I was expecting a How to Play video about a newer game. Is there any reason to watch this when there are dozens of games out there for many years that do the same?
Just finished watching this video. It was very helpful. I'm making a Java based version of this game that is played on a computer with (hopefully) smart AI opponents for my third year university project and I needed to know the rules of this game properly and this video has been very helpful. Just wondering, is there anything else I should know about this game that you may have missed out on explaining in this video? Thanks.
Flip dogmas is wrong i read the rules, and nowhere does it state that you may not have settlements/cities on your road in order to be eligible for longest road.
Well, I thought the presentation style was kind of cheesey, but the content was great. I own the basic Settlers game and the 6-player expansion, but have yet to get anyone interested in playing. I've read the rules, watched reviews, etc., but it just never seemed interesting at all, just seemed like a tedious roll/collect/place sequence. This play-by-play actually shows how it might become an interesting game. Now I just have to convince a few other people to try it.
AmRFuKYaH Yes, exactly. I have friends who I play games with, but haven't been able to get anyone interested in Settlers. I bought it because I was able to get a really good price, and it's on so many must-have lists. But except for the (famous) clip of Sheldon playing it in Big Bang Theory, I've never seen anything that made it look interesting or fun.
Evac156 It's an extremely addicting game. My friend group has played it for about two months straight when we have the time. And if you have the real version of the game (not the plastic pieces) you can create a different board every time. Trading resources with players, the bank, collecting development cards (waiting for the right time to use that monopoly) it's really an amazing game.
From a gameplay persepctive, it stops the entire start of the game being solely road building. If you could build anywhere on your road, then whoever started with the most brick and wood could simply strangle everyone else. This way, you can still play agressive and land-grab, but at the expense of your own expansion, and having a lower income for your spending.
The video got pretty repetitive extremely fast because of the same voice playing all the turns, a co-host would have been good to break up the monotony, also, red and orange could not be distinguished. Also, it would have been good to show players how to -win-, probably skipping some turns from the beginning to near endgame, so players can see how the game ends up looking like.

Having just started playing Catan online with buddies a few days ago and having literally no idea what I was doing this helped a bunch
thank you for this! i can tell how hard you worked on it
I just want to say that your voice is silky smooth!
Heard it was super confusing, but that video doesn't look bad at all. Definitely will be getting this for tomorrow night, thanks!
eric george Heck yes. That's my reason for making this video. Hope you're having fun (probably right now?)!
Hell yes more Jake Wylie! we need so much more
Instructions start at 01:14

so if u have more than 7 cards u have to discard half your hand for the robber?
Good job of using humour and clear video to make this game appear fun. It's on my list of wants.
I wish I could play Settlers of Catan with Dracula and Deputy Dog.
Keep up the good work Jake!
Thanks Dice Tower again for another amazing How To video!

Jake Wylie
Sir Vasel could add an annotation around 7:26 regarding the mistake?
Nice vid. I just bought the game and wanted to get a feel for the gameplay before my wife and i actually try playing it. thanks.
thanks, this helped SO much! and your voice makes it so much better hahha

Very helpful. Thank you! Can’t wait to play this!
I am playing this game since 1995. I even have my old copy that didn't have the "Spiel des Jahres" Badge on it. :)
Very good and fun, thank you! I learned things i didnt pick up in the app tutorial. Recently bought the game
Simple and informative! Thanks for explaining!
thank you for the video. clearest explanation on the net
Love this tutorial! My wife is hosting a Catan night at our local gaming/comics shop :)
Because Settlers is a very popular game and we like promoting good games on our show. We'll make videos about newer games. You'll see!
Best tutorial of them all if you are searching

Jake how come you don't do any more videos? did you do the one for Colosseum?
Playing this with my teacher and friends after school in middle school. good times. A game would definitely take longer than 30 minutes. Depends on the circumstances
Probably even an hour @.@ it's all worth it though lml
Yeah no way anyone could play in 30 minutes haha. Kind of like Ticket to Ride. That game takes like 2 hours minimum.

+Tymoor Rahman Sounds interesting! Be sure to tell me when it's done! :D
Tymoor Rahman aye let us know how it goes
Well done. Clearly explained.
so, every two adjacent roads, you can build a settlementat the end?
the settlements can be built anywhere? not only in one line?
Thanks for the good explain , since im gona be trying to play it soon with some friends.
But can I bring my dnd figurines and dice to the game?
Loved this, thank you 😂
Really helpful! Thanks a lot!!
Thank you, very concise.
I was wondering- why cant you place a settlement between roads?
this game seems boring and not my style but i still enjoyed watching this video, thanks jake :D
Flip dogmas is wrong i read the rules, and nowhere does it state that you may not have settlements/cities on your road in order to be eligible for longest road.
Totally gonna get!
i love this game!!
Vary helpful, thank you.
So, does this tutorial teach how to play Catan with Jake Wylie? Is it that different than playing with other people?
Kinda seems like someone combined Monopoly and Risk, just my opinion. Seem interesting enough, I might buy a set eventually.
Kimberly Carlson it's a hell of a lot more fun than it looks
That’s exactly how I described it
oh this is the type of game i want!!!
is there a Hand Limit for Catan?
The other voices got distracting and the intro was too long, but this helped.
14 seconds was too long? american
No I think he meant the bit about Japan and anime may have been overkill ;)
Nice video!
Forever alone Jake
Longest road example is incorrect. There should not be any settlement or city between the connecting road.
cool! wonder why i thought this this game was star trek related, spin off maybe?
It's my favorite game!
What do I do with say the "Monopoly" card after it's been used?
you leave it face up. you can't use it again and you can't put it back in the development card deck.

Wish there was a way to fight/declare war on an opponent
my best game
great video ;)

such a cliff hanger
gr8 tutorial
lol when you realize this game is basically cones of dunshire from Parks and Rec
Really? Did you read the title before you clicked on the link?
Apparently the white player is a vampire. :)
i just heard about this game recently but it looks rather confusing...
At*
as a guy who loves board games, this game looks ridiculous.
Its actually pretty cool
best game ever

Tryed to glue the edges on a bord but then the hexes dident fitt , not worth the money.
elizabeth banks brought me here
Who got wood for my sheep?
Rear one point you started playing against yourself...
too fast
He's a Eugene
It took us 2 hours
easy does it red LOL
My game worked 4-5 games then the bord was uneven.
Over 300 million Americans!
I was trying to learn how to play settlers. Your introduction made me not learn.
