My brother brought it from Germany before it was available in the UK. We changed a couple of the rules. When starting, instead of first settlements being put on in the order player 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4, we changed it to players 1-2-3-4-4-3-2-1, made going first less of an advantage. We discount 7's in the first round, this saved the last player having the chance of losing a "road" if he had wood and brick from one of his settlements. We play to 12 points as 10 is over too quickly. AWESOME GAME
I want this game, but currently have nobody to play it with. I have been playing the iPhone version for quite a while. Another issue is that the game's title and the fact that you have "settlements" and "trading" is likely to sound nerdy to people who are quick to judge, and so I might have difficulty getting friends to play it if I do buy it... GREAT game though.
Depends on the amount of luck and how much you can mitigate it. 7 Wonders is a card game that has some luck because of the card draw, but the 2 player version is one of my favorite games because of how much tactics are involved in spite of the card draw. Last Night on Earth has both cards and dice, but I love that game because of how much it creates the story for you.
Just got this and flash point today... Now i got my eyes set on stone age or pillars of the earth for my first worker placement game. Any suggestions on which of those two is better... Feel free to let me know.
Yes, I am familiar with it. It seems like the kind of game my gaming group would like. I might pick it up in the near future. Right now my goal is to learn, teach, and play Here I Stand with my gaming group.
the older version of this game had better ocean borders. all hexes, allowing for greater customization. did someone say a lake in the middle of catan with ports in it?
@VideoVerifying Not in this case. If the cities are the same colour as the road (same player), then it still counts for longest road. If, however, one of the cities belongs to another player, then he/she does not get the longest road.
I love Catan. I know some people who dislike it. I don't know how you could ever dislike this game. The expansions make it interesting. I own an older version of the game.
I love this game as well but, ironically, I can never people who want to play it, let alone have heard of it. I try to play the Xbox live version but I rarely find others playing the game.
You forgot to mention how this game ruins friendships since whomever is close to winning 10 victory points immediately has all their attempted moves thwarted by the other three players. lol.
smoothcriminal88 I'd go for stone age. I personally own Pillars, and our game group just about solved it. I haven't played stone age, but looking at the design, I can only assume it's a tad deeper!
to whoever wants to give their opinion: given the fact that catan is a cornerstone in boardgaming, what is the game which could be designated as its successor?
love catan, its the easiest game to play with people who think they dont like board games. to add to the review, my favorite component is that everyone plays until the end, unlike monopoly where someone can loose and the game still go on for hours...
hm me and my friends finished a game in 15, we were just speed running it though. Our very first game did last about an hour of trying to figure things out haha
I don't know why is Catan so highly regarded as a trading game. Simply saying "you can trade" is not enough to me. It should have rules and mechanics for deals, not just an allowance. I like the game, but we never trade when we play it. In my opinion it is not a trading game.
This is a game that is fast and easy to teach and play, in fact I played this with the young girls I was sitting for and pulled it out and they loved it (btw they are all under 8). Worth getting and has plenty of expansions to change the game up in many ways. If you do get this spring for the 5-6 expansion to go with it. I do not recommend the histories versions of the game, the board does not change and the replay-ability is low.
@hoss7753 I also find this to be the case. I've never played a 4 or even 3 player game that didn't last about an hour and a half. Though a lot of the people I play with tend to try and force people to trade with them and draw out their turns much to long.
i forced some friends to play it, and they all got addicted to it, i think 2 of my friends disliked it. all in all it is a great game a must play for anyone who has ever enjoyed a bord game ever.
I just played this game last night for the first time and the luck part killed it for me. The trading and card management parts, which I used, were undone by bad dice roles that undid my tactics and that was all I needed to convince me the game isn't for me.
Well i feel like: I offer 1 wool and 1 wood but i need your 1 ore. Or at a dice of 7 with the robber - I give you one wood if you put this to the third player's number 9 ore! Than he plays a knight and asks: And now what do you offer to not put on you? Um i don't know... and so on, so on :D - L0l Many of good hours with Catan :P.
Thank GOD for your video overview, man. The instructions included with this game are ASS. It's a shame because it's a really great game - but the makers need to do some basic beta-testing of their instructions! Seriously awful and not up to the game's excellent standard of play
I must be missing something here. I've heard great things about this game for so long, I usually "get" what Tom's saying in his reviews, but something here isn't connecting. It just doesn't look like anything interesting can happen here. I'm not putting down the game (or the review), and I'm going to have to try it for myself. But after watching this review (several times), I just wonder where the entertainment comes in. Seems like you place houses, roll dice, and hope for the best.
For this game, the correlation between fun and this game, is the people you play with. Be careful it can take up to 4hours + not to mention the expansions for even more fun @.@
@InMemoryOfUs I thought it was funny, if you didnt like it, all you had to do was just ignore the message. But no, you decided to be inconsiderate and rude. I was not trying to be "badass" i mean come on, i play Settlers of Catan. How "badass" is that!? Telling me to shut up? Sounds like you are the one trying to be this "badass". Your words mean nothing to me and i have no masters.
almost any game that uses dice or cards is going to involve some luck. you must also hate Monopoly and a few hundred other board games that use dice rolls.
My brother brought it from Germany before it was available in the UK. We changed a couple of the rules. 5th-most-watched Dice Tower review (as of November 28, 2016).

So can you place a settlements anywere on the map in the beggining? Or do you have set places?
Strangely, one of my closest friends won't play board games with me in person, but loves playing Settlers and Carccasonne on X-BOX 360.
Ticket To Ride is great too--especially the European map!

Hi I read in wiki that mr vasel reviewed 5000+ games and his first was settlers, is this it ?
i dont get the roads...do they only give you the longest road bonus?
Watching this in 2024. Catan is still excellent😎
Yes, I am familiar with it. It seems like the kind of game my gaming group would like. I might pick it up in the near future. Right now my goal is to learn, teach, and play Here I Stand with my gaming group.

That development card is the Borgund Stave Church! :)
6 of the most experienced players play this to see how fast a 6 player game can be won... 17 minutes.
I love this game.
@VideoVerifying Not in this case. If the cities are the same colour as the road (same player), then it still counts for longest road. If, however, one of the cities belongs to another player, then he/she does not get the longest road.
@Logicfray it says on the box 3-4 players
I love Catan. I know some people who dislike it. I don't know how you could ever dislike this game. The expansions make it interesting.

Is this same idea with the game in PC , Settlers ? which now is already 7th
Thanks! This was extremely helpful. Good on you for such a helpful video.
Cheers!
You forgot to mention how this game ruins friendships since whomever is close to winning 10 victory points immediately has all their attempted moves thwarted by the other three players. lol.
If you can get a better camera, then I would definitely watch more
smoothcriminal88 I'd go for stone age. I personally own Pillars, and our game group just about solved it. I haven't played stone age, but looking at the design, I can only assume it's a tad deeper!
How many players can join that game??? answer pls.
The Game Plays 3-4 officially, but has expansions to 5 or 6 and with slight modifications can play 2. all levels play as a great game
to whoever wants to give their opinion: given the fact that catan is a cornerstone in boardgaming, what is the game which could be designated as its successor?
Ticket to Ride
Really any strategy game that involves resource management. Hell, Lords of Waterdeep comes immediately to mind.
very much appreciated, thanks
can you fight with the knights? or are they just useless
@AnimaP0L I know it does, but you could play two players but IMO it just doesnt work well if one person gets to far ahead.
Find some folks that have the game. The interest is all in the trading (in my opinion). That can't be simulated without a game group.
Very helpful. Thanks!
Should do a video on Settlers of Catan: Explorers and Pirates Expansion!!! That would be good!!
great video! I can't wait to try this game for myself!
love catan, its the easiest game to play with people who think they dont like board games.

Trading is really vital to Catan, that's how you get your resources to build things. Otherwise it is just a luck game.
@siw1800 1-2-3-4-4-3-2-1 is how it is written in the rulebook.
Excellent review, thanks a lot!
This is a game that is fast and easy to teach and play, in fact I played this with the young girls I was sitting for and pulled it out and they loved it (btw they are all under 8). I've never played this but am interested, anyone know if the Xbox Live version does it any justice?
Came striaght here after watching this new college humore vija!
@hoss7753 I also find this to be the case. I've never played a 4 or even 3 player game that didn't last about an hour and a half. Though a lot of the people I play with tend to try and force people to trade with them and draw out their turns much to long.
I just watched Paul plays minecraft, got straight here after he mentioned it
Catan is a phenomenal game.
SoC is great game. I love the add ons like Sailors, which introduce a lot of interesting rules, and make it really time-consuming.
240p how far we have come
You should try Lords of Waterdeep, excellent dice-less game
45 minutes? I've played this game about 5 times and I haven't played a 4 player game in under 2 hours yet.
Jahkno Star... 11yrs later (spongebob voice)... lol!
@hoss7753 You have to play with people that play frequently.. I almost always end a game in under an hour.
i forced some friends to play it, and they all got addicted to it, i think 2 of my friends disliked it.
all in all it is a great game a must play for anyone who has ever enjoyed a bord game ever.
good summary!
great review! :D
I just played this game last night for the first time and the luck part killed it for me. The trading and card management parts, which I used, were undone by bad dice roles that undid my tactics and that was all I needed to convince me the game isn't for me.
Reupload please...
The game is called The Settlers of CATAN (KA TAN not KA TON) >....
@killerkid00 yea, and they help you get to the ocean
Well i feel like: I offer 1 wool and 1 wood but i need your 1 ore. Or at a dice of 7 with the robber - I give you one wood if you put this to the third player's number 9 ore! @GreenJanuary i like turtles...and candyland
-zombieboy
This is less of a review than it is a tutorial.

@sigilant this game does not work well with only 2 people.
i like mouse trap
Cool.

@DimitriGoryenko Math.
GET OUT OF HERE, KNIGHTS! @ 6:42
collegehumor is always making fun of this game so I figured I'd YT it and see what it actually was.
this game is sickkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
Its better than ark nova to be fair
For this game, the correlation between fun and this game, is the people you play with. Be careful it can take up to 4hours + not to mention the expansions for even more fun @.@
Blue got all the brick and wood lolll
hehe, 6 and 9.
it sounds boring but its actually so fun and competitive
@cristiungurianu Or you can sit around a table with a group of people and goof off.
@InMemoryOfUs I thought it was funny, if you didnt like it, all you had to do was just ignore the message. But no, you decided to be inconsiderate and rude. brick for wool xD
wen i first played this with my friends we were laughing so hard becuz it sounds so stupid to say "ill give you 2 wood for a sheep"
this comment, we meet again...for the 36,522 time
Sheep is wood.
Hardest game in history.
you remind me of angrynintendonerd!
this game is way to simple....
2-4 players? I was sure it's 3-4? meh, even if it can't be played in 2 I bet it won't be very fun and tradings would almost never happen
Bro, tradings ALWAYS happen and it's actually better than you think it is.
Or you can play Age of Empires...
almost any game that uses dice or cards is going to involve some luck. you must also hate Monopoly and a few hundred other board games that use dice rolls.
Terrible game. If you want to spend 6 days waiting for the other players to finish their turns then play this trash game.
minecfaft :
I hate this game. I hate it.
i have wood for sheep LMAO
Did you know, if you remove the C from Catan and replace it with an S. It says Settlers of Satan. Maybe this is why the game is becoming famous LOL
240p? No thanks... I’ll go elsewhere
