my simple rules for 2P catan: both players play 2 colors simultaneously the best that they can, and their two colors cannot trade with each other. seemed to work well
That was my thinking too for a simple 2 player variant. Victory Points are still separate but your 2 settlers can conspire to help 1 win, but cannot trade between themselves. My other idea was to have 1 neutral settler, that does get its own resources, and on certain rolls of the dice you can build with the neutral settler and trade with it 1:1. I didn't establish it fully.
Wow! Thank you so much for posting this video. I just played 2 player Catan and it was great. Your video really explained things well. I have reviewed many board game instructional videos over the years and this was by far the best. Can't wait to see what you post next!
Thank you for the video! My boyfriend and I wanted to play this game and could not figure it out…this is WONDERFUL! Finally we get to play in our vacations, thank you!!
Thanks for the nice simple explanation of 2 player rules. My SO and I play 2 player all the time but with no alteration of the base rules and unlike others dont think its "broken" on 2 player, just sometimes very 1 sided,oh well, the next game will be better!I look forward to trying the 2 player adjustments. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
Oh,and I kinda like the way you leave in the slight stumbles in speech that everyone makes everyday when communicating...Most others would have edited them out.
Thank you so much! :) My boyfriend and I enjoyed this version a lot! However, in the beginning you say, that building on the coast gives you 1 token, in the last example you say it's two. I'd be great if you can tell me which one is correct ^^
Sorry I missed this question. Here's how the comm.chips work: For every settlement placed near the desert, a player receives two chips (this also works in the establishment phase). For every settlement placed on the coast, a player receives one chip (this also works in the establishment phase). Also, the player can earn two chips for disbanding a soldier. When the player chooses to disband a soldier, he discards one soldier card previously played. The soldier can be disbanded from the reserve at any time on player's turn, and the player can discard as many soldiers on his turn as he/she. The biggest army should then be recounted. If the player has less than three soldiers, he loses the biggest army card.
Lol, if you watch the video, has anyone ever noticed that at 0:17 he stops, and rephrases his sentence, and rolls his eyes. Lol, just was wondering if anyone ever noticed it…
I actually think 2 player is a lot of fun. We never play more than 3 because 1 of 4 players will be so handicapped with 4 they can never build anything. We also play to 12 if we play 2 players
In the beginning you say you get 1 trade token when building on the coast. Then at the end when you gave an example you gave yourself 2 trade tokens for building on the coast. Which is it?
So....do I get trade tokens when I have to build for a neutral player and it happens to be next to the desert or coast? The rules say "when you build"....🤔
Hi there! Q: In a 2-player variant and a random-tiles setup, are the starting resources given according to the 1st settlement placed by each player during the setup stage, or the 2nd settlement?
I have Star Trek Catan and I am looking for the best 2 player rules for this game. I think that tokens would not be necessary because of the Uhura card, but should the players play the dice twice in a row also in Star Trek Catan? Thanks for your video.
I know, Im a year late on this. But I was just wondering... when you roll the second time, and you cannot have the same number value, because the ghost player does not collect twice..... what happens to their original bit of resource that they get? DO they not use those resources?
How do you pick the exact starting positions for the neutral players? Where do the numbers start in relation to the neutral players? If the numbers always start in the same spot, then the neutral players will always (or often) block the same numbers.
i dont get WHEN can i play the trade tokens? can i remove the robber before throwing dices? i also dont get if i build a settlement, do i MUST to build also a settlement (if there is a possible place for it) or can i build a third road for example? also this extension makes the robber pointless, since its so easy to be removed :/ even the knigh cards are pointless too besides the 2 points
We love many versions of 1V1 The kind we like most is where both players play simultaneously. You still take turns rolling but you go through the turn phases simultaneously, when every there is a conflict then whoever rolled has priority. There is never dead time, no neutral players. It is wonderful
I play normal rules while 2 players game. The only differences is 1. no trading between players, 2. we play till 15 points reached, 3(optional) we start having three villages instead of two. Go on and try
Superb and very easy to understand. Can you clarify whether the 7 rule of applies in the 2 player version i.e when a player rolls a 7 and if either player has more than 7 cards, do they have to put back half of their cards into the bank ?
So what are all the things that can get you tokens? I've noticed how in the end he also remembered that building a settlement on the coast gives you two tokens which made me think maybe there's more he's forgotten to mention?

So you need 20 victory points? or just 10, and if the points of each color are aded or are separated "games" (?

Thanks for this! I wish I had the transcript, though.
Great rules. I just played 2 games with my wife and we had fun!
SO FANTASTIC!! I love Settlers of Catan but always found it was a bit boring with 2 people. I'm excited to try this new way!
It's way more fun to play by these rules! Either this or find more friends.
Thank you for the video! My boyfriend and I wanted to play this game and could not figure it out…this is WONDERFUL! Finally we get to play in our vacations, thank you!!
3:28 is spooky, how did he manage to roll 7 at his own will?
can you please tell me how to play monopoly twister edition
What happens when someone builds a settlement and the ghost players don't have a legal spot to build one?
Jacob Aldrich If no legal placement of a settlement is possible, you build a road instead.

What if when you place a settlement, none of the neutral players have a valid spot to place theirs?
You place a road then
The sound... My ears!
This is excellent! Thanks for sharing
Thank you! Playing with my 7 year old and loving this variation
Lol, if you watch the video, has anyone ever noticed that at 0:17 he stops, and rephrases his sentence, and rolls his eyes. Lol, just was wondering if anyone ever noticed it…

Can you build/trade between the first and second roll?
This is what I would like to know as well
In the beginning you say you get 1 trade token when building on the coast. Then at the end when you gave an example you gave yourself 2 trade tokens for building on the coast. Which is it?
great video me and my girlfriend really enjoyed playing with these rules!! :)
Where have gone?
This is awesome, thank you!
Not doing a retake at 16 seconds is crazy
So....do I get trade tokens when I have to build for a neutral player and it happens to be next to the desert or coast? The rules say "when you build"....🤔
Great video, well explained. Thanks
Thanks! More to come!
Hi there!
Q: In a 2-player variant and a random-tiles setup, are the starting resources given according to the 1st settlement placed by each player during the setup stage, or the 2nd settlement?
Well in regular catan it’s the 2nd, but i wouldn’t imagine it would change in this version
Didn’t answer the question. So are any resources initially given at the beginning of this 2 player version?
@@racsop70 Yes, there are. Same as in regular Catan based on the adjacent tiles of second settlement plus the tokens mentioned in the video.
Really helpful video! Thank you!

Thank you so much! can't wait to play!
Great video! Thanks!
Thanks for the rules! But, just some critical feed back. The video is very hard to get through.
Just played my first game of Catan and it was this version with my boyfriend. He has played a few times with 4 players. He tore me a new one. Goodbye!
Do u get trade tokens from simply building settlements?
Also, any 2 player variation of Cities & Knights?
0:15 Glitch in the Matrix
Awesome video
nice explanation
Why did u quit
the shane dawson of Catan
thank you.
Thanks
Do the neutral settlements necessarily have to be placed on those exact hexes at setup?
That's how I understand it - There is a pdf rules reference on the BoardGameGeek Catan-page
@@ernstfourie7662 Link?
@@alexamylon5847 Here is the link for the rules: boardgamegeek.com/filepage/21616/klaus2playerpdf

My boyfriend and I play it 2 player it’s not that hard.
I know, Im a year late on this. But I was just wondering... when you roll the second time, and you cannot have the same number value, because the ghost player does not collect twice..... what happens to their original bit of resource that they get? DO they not use those resources?
Neutral players do not collect resources on any die roll
Hey if your playing with one other player that means only 2 players how do tou action cuz the other player is the only one who can bet or u can too?
Hi, do players start with any tokens or only gotten through methods you describe?
You better review the tape at 01:50
Yup, sorry.
😱😱😱
Saw this in a thrift store for 1.25 like new. Left it there.Complicated and no fun I'm.

Good video, but I think you forgot to edit some parts.
Where he restarts lmao
Erik I think he did it on purpose. I don’t believe it was
A mistake.
@@sO_RoNerY but he could just edit it out he restated perfectly so it would be easy to edit out the mistake he made in the script…

Fantastic video! Thank you!
if both players has 4 points, how many tokens do i use to force trade?
absolutely loved this video, thank you!!! you are a great speaker and great at explaining :)
I bought 5th edition not this king it was 3plus players. Glad I found it works for 2. Great video thank you

thank you for the video, it was easy to understand
