Canceling my plumbing appointment because the universe helped me find this video. Plumber said he couldn’t remove the cartridge and need to replace pipes+tiles for ridiculous amount. Decided to give this a go. I failed trying by myself but with two people (one pushing pipes, one pulling nail in cartridge) WD40 + patience + elbow grease , it slid right out.
Plumbers and other service people try doing this garbage all the time. I was quoted an hourly rate upwards of $300 and really hopeful to get mine fixed myself too.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I thought it was gonna be an easy process because I watched all of the TH-cam videos. However, when I took off the handle and saw that the stem had broken inside, cold sweat ran down my back. I was lost. Somehow your video popped up and it came out slicker than snot. I wish I knew who you were so I could treat you to lunch. Thanks again.
Subbed! My fiance broke the handle off while giving our son a bath and I thought I was screwed. Cost me $63 for replacement and other things I needed. Good to go now!
Hey, thanks for the video. Another person you saved with this technique! I have guests coming from far this weekend, staying at my house. I would have paid a plumber a lot to sort out that mess. Very happy and proud to have sorted out that mess myself. To pull the cartridge I used the plank technique instead: pieces of wood against the wall to protect, and nail-pulling side of a hammer. Worked great, and it didn't seem to pull the whole assembly sideways.
Great trick and the video was easy to find and I got that cartridge out easy now I gotta go get a new one. Thank god for this video because the one thing I don’t know how to do is plumbing. 10/10 👏🏼
This was an awesome find. Followed your instructions and got the cartridge out. I really like the idea of using the hammer like you did. I wasn't looking forward to yanking it out and possibly breaking something in the wall. Thanks for sharing this
The decking screw did the trick…I did modify your technique. I used a crowbar, and a block of wood to act as a pivot, and protect the wall. The screw pulled out a couple of times, but each time, the valve came out a little farther, until enough was out that a pair of vice grips, and a little back and forth rotation while gently pulling outward freed the old cartridge. I then cut up a piece of sponge, soaked it in lime remover, and used that to clean the mineral deposits out of the valve before installing the new cartridge. I used a couple of other pieces of sponge, one soaked in water to remove the lime cleaner, then a dry piece of sponge to dry out the housing.
Here to say that this technique totally worked! I didn’t have a screw gun so I just used my power drill, bored a 9/64 hole and drilled in a sheet metal screw. Used a wood block for leverage and some vise grip pliers to get it halfway then used channel lock pliers and wd40 twisting to get it out completely. Awesome! So proud of myself and thankful to your video!
Thanks dude, I got it. I have about 30 of those 4 inch screws from Schlage deadbolts. Just hitched my vise grips to my ball peen hammer, and used a pair channel locks and kept re-adjusting until it it came out. and lots of penetrating oil
Our faucet just broke tonight and every video I came across wasn’t giving a straight answer. That or their handle didn’t look like mine, anyway, I’m going to try this! Thank you for this!
Great work! My handle core just broke trying to take off the handle. There was so much mineral build up that the handle is stuck to the handle adapter. I'll do something similar to what you did to get the core out.
Thank you for an easier way to try to remove....the Moen and Danco removal are impossible. Well going to attempt your way. Just need to go through my drill bits and screws and the lubricants or get Nano. Thanks!
@@checkitout2468 I ended up using a Phillips screwdriver in lieu of the hammer (mirroring everything else you did). I simply placed the end of the screwdriver inside the against the plate mounting holes (Not sure if that was a bad idea, but it worked). It worked like a charm (I went through two screws). In my case, the interior portion of the cartridge came out with your method, leaving the outside stuck inside whatever that thing is called. Another TH-cam video had a guy who used a tap set to remove the rest of the cartridge housing. However, when I talked to an old timer at Home Depot, his solution worked perfectly as was far less expensive. He sold me a short threaded 3/4 pipe (just about four inches long). I threaded that into the housing and pulled/turned/pushed the housing until it came out.
Thank you for this video, saved me a service call. The tip about the hammer bracing the pipes was key. Mine was stubborn and needed the support on the pipes. I used a screwdriver because my space was tight but same effect.
I just spent the day trying to fix the same problem. Mine was in a seldom used bathroom built 25 years ago so that may have been a factor. I finally had to use a 1" hole saw to get the plastic to release. The center piece that I drilled as you did would turn so I couldn't get the screw threads to engage. Why do plumbers not put shutoff valves ahead of shower/bath faucets like they do sinks?
I am curious why the cartridge needs replaced for a broken handle? Mine broke off way back 7 mos ago and I had to leave it until I finished all my classes. Been looking for only replacement for that broken handle and everyone brings up the cartridge but I thought that’s only replaced when water has been leaking not just for a broken handle. Please advise.
Great idea but did you spray lubricant outside the brass metal or inside the metal around the cartridge plastic part? I wonder how the lubricant would go around such a tightly fit cartridge which is horizontal. Also did you drill into the metal stem part? I see a black plastic around that stem in center.
I knew i couldn't be the only person this has happened to. I hate hiring pros and asking for help. The videos about this that don't cover a snapped cartridge annoy me. What a guy.
Great video. Rather than the multiple tools you could have placed a piece of wood across the hole and used the nail remover portion of your hammer to pry out the screw in your old cartridge.
@@checkitout2468 Good tip. Unfortunately did not work for me, the carriage was stuck really bad, the top ended up breaking so I had to replace the entire shower valve 😞
I wanted a certain shower handle when we redid the bathroom. The contractor used a different, ugly one. He claims that in order to switch it to the one we want he would have to open up the wall behind the shower to resolder it. Is this possible? I see tons of TH-cam videos of changing the handle and the faceplate yourselves in matter of minutes I think he's lying. This is just purely aesthetic there is no leak and the shower is in the exact same place it always was.
This is a good video because any thing can happen when you start to take apart plumbing. Remember the Murphy Law. Good idea using the screw , hammers and pliers. (Hey what ever works.)👍🧰
3 years ago you made a video that saved me a lot of money today, you are an ally of man brother

God created the universe! Jesus is Lord!
I ran a screw straight into the plastic body of the cartridge. worked.
Dude you're a hero I had literally the exact same problem and used your method. It worked great! Thank you!

Thanks so much for all the tips, I don't know how I would have done this without , especially some of the tips on leverage.
Thank you for the every little detail, your trick using leverage, and the awesome camera views!
Wow. You have saved me hundreds. Thank you! I had no idea what happened when my shower handle broke off! Ugh

Found this today… 2024. It worked perfectly and you saved us sooo much. Thank you!!!
Thank you! This worked perfectly for me... I used the hammer, channel locks and a vice grip for the same outcome.. Saved me time and $$
Glad I ran across this, didn't even have the foggiest idea what to do and this worked super slick! Thank you so much!
Drilled out and a 3" screw is exactly what worked for me. Thank you!

How did you get that screw in with the busted part of the valve still inside the cartridge?

Amazing!!! Spent half an afternoon trying to pry it out and 30 mins with this technique.

You are so right! A shut-off valve there would be amazing! Maybe add to the list if one ever has a house built from scratch.
Exactly what I needed thank you!
Absolutely helpful.
Thank you so much. I did exactly same way you did. Really appreciate your video.

Thanks for the instructional video. I have the same problem.... 😀
I do the same except I use a small half inch piece of wood and lay it across the opening and use a hammer to pry it out against the piece of wood

Is there a way to still use the shower temporarily?
Nicely done. I will definitely be using this method as old cartridges almost always get suck due to calcium and grease weare.

does it matter how u get the handle off? mine is super stuck
Good tool form this would be a small slide hammer or a 2x4 and a flatbar to go with the screw in.
What size bit and screw did you use
Maaaan i was about to take a shower and the shit broke off 😭😭
Mine happened tonight
@@MrPlayParty mine just happened man f
Same yo
Had that happen to me last night. Turned it and BAM!!! I had it in hand 😂😂
I drilled a coarse thread screw right into the plastic, pulled on that screw with plyers and cartridge slid out
Thanks bro 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
What if I accidentally broke my shower cartridge in half with it half of it stuck inside the pipe? 😅
You gotta turn the water off first right?
YES!
@@checkitout2468 I figured, but I'd worse off not to ask.

forgot to say SHUT OFF YOUR WATER to the house
all 4 showers in my house have broken within 3 years, this is ridiculous, all from lowes(not all the same model)
Thank fuck you posted this. Home Depot tomorrow wooooo

I’m guessing my landlord is the cheapest in the game. Everything is plastic.. smh.
