  • A tribute to Ray Bolger, hosted by Donald O'Connor. A music/dance treat culled from the 1954/55 T.V. series, "Where's Raymond", retitled "The Ray Bolger Show" for the second season displays the versatility of Ray as he performs solo and with numerous guests. In addition to his partner, Sylvia Lewis, who served as choreographer for the series, delightful appearances by Verna Felton, Muriel Landers, Chick Chandler, Larri Thomas, Maurice Kelly, Georgine D'Darcy and others round out the hour.

Awww what an adorable, wonderful tribute to the greatness that is Ray Bolger. I absolutely loved him when I was very young. Come to think it I still do.

What a remarkable hour of entertainment! Seeing Mr. Bolger and Mr. O'Connor reminds me of better times: happier, softer, simpler and more smile-inducing. No multiple music video edits, special effects, dance-ins...simply a man sharing his talent and love of performance with the viewer. Hopefully TCM might see this and share it?

He was a great vaudevilian, dancer, singer, and a consumate entertainer. Showbiz run in his veins. Sylvia Lewis who produced and directed this video, is a wonderful dancer, and choreographer. I am very happy that she gave us the opportunity to enjoy all these great clips with Ray Bolger. She is also beautiful. Thanks for the downloads.

Ray Bolger is/was my favorite dancer of all time. I just discovered this gem. It shows how wonderful he really was. I love Astaire and Kelly, but Ray could do things they couldn't even begin to imagine. What a wonderful talent. Thanks for posting

Verna Felton is hilarious and best remembered for the film PICNIC and the TV series DECEMBER BRIDE. Georgine D'Arcy played Miss Torso in the classic REAR WINDOW.

I worked on this production shooting the Donald O'Connor segments on the Television stage at the USC School of Cinema-TV (Now called the USC School of Cinematic Arts). I operated the open-reel Ampex VTR, stopping and starting it when cued to, to record each take.
I never got to see the finished product till today, June 10, 2015, nearly 30 years after we shot it in 1987. Interesting how it indicates it was copyrighted 1990 at the end. Post-production must have taken a LOT more time than I had any idea to expect it would!
Wish I could post a picture here. I have a photo taken of me between takes, sitting at the machine. I fondly recall meeting Donald O'Connor. I remember being told that Ray Bolger was still alive when we shot the O'Connor segments, but that he wasn't doing well and may not be with us much longer. I was told the production would run on PBS.

Roger Speakman Good to read your coments. Yes, it was intended for PBS. Jac Venza wanted it for "Great Perfomances" but negotiations ran afoul over $$$. (what else is new?). I assumed ownership in '90 so the copyright was changed at that time. Nothing to do with post production. Ray was still alive when we completed it and was thrilled with the finished product, as was his wife. it did air internationally but never in the U.S. That 's why I posted it here, so at least it would be seen by anyone interested. Happy to hear from you. You were part of a great and talented young crew, beginning with Steve deSatnick whose help was invaluable.

So nice of you to answer, Sylvia, isn't it? Who danced in so many of the clips with Ray? It's unfortunate it's intended means of broadcast never was achieved, and I had been disappointed over the years not to have seen the finished show! But it's great you wound up owning it! And you directed it! Would that mean you were at 'SC when we were shooting D. O.'s segments? If so, I must have at least had a chance to meet you, as well, even if that didn't happen. Maybe it did and it's just that that day, or days, were a blur to me!
I was the school's video tech from Sept. of 1984 to June of 1989. I was asked to operate the VTR for the shoot "out of the blue" and it was a nice break from my usual duties! I, of course, knew most of the students who crewed out on the stage on the shoot. I even acted in some of their projects during the years I worked there!
I am SO pleased to learn, after all this time, that Ray Bolger got to see the finished program before it was too late! I went looking online for it last night on a whim after seeing Ray with Bobby Van in an episode of Battlestar Galactica on the new Blu-ray set (which I had originally seen when it was on ABC in 1979). The new HD version of the series looks wonderful and the two show off some dance moves in their episode, in which they play androids! Another episode guest-starred Fred Astaire!
I will have to re-watch the dancing clips with the special knowledge that we interracted here on TH-cam!

Yes, we did meet, I directed alll the scenes shot at USC. My friend Richard Erdman was supposed to direct the "new" material, but he got an acting job which he couldn't refuse, so iI stepped in and directed the scenes with Donald. It wasn't a task for which I was prepared. Relieved it worked out.

oldgypsytap And I just remembered some minutes ago that the Steve deSatnick you mention was my supervisor for a year or so back then! Since you and he worked together on this, that would explain why I wound up being asked to operate the VTR!
My memory for details is poor, which is one reason I love shooting personal video, to save those memories in a way I can relive them! I have a good deal of personal video shot at the film school during the 1980's on Betamax Tape, but none from that production.
I know we must have met, but it must have been brief. I sure wish I remembered it now! I really don't remember the details of meeting Donald O., only that I did, and the feeling he was a nice and friendly guy.

The Apache Dance was danced by Delores Graham who, along with her husband Don, worked as an Apache Dance team in those years. Don was the guy who intervened at the end of the number and did the tough lifts with Delores.
