I know right Donald is one of the people deserved to live forever as a legend like other singers ( John Lennon, Freddie Mercury etc) but sadly after his death in 2007 he was forgotten by my generation same with Gene. Now if you were to ask me my personal favorite of the two I would totally say Donald O' Connor. I love his warm and caring nature, his smile is so genuine, his dancing is remarkable, his comedy is so hilarious, and his singing is some of the best I have ever heard. I just watched him in Out To Sea, when he was a lot older and he could still dance just as good as he could in Singing In The Rain and in others. He was still funny especially all of his expressions. He does not have a ton of lines but he has some awesome dancing moments considering how old he was getting for me anyway he will be my dancing star.

I disagree that age really slowed Gene. He was in Xanadu and was fantastic in that. He just did a variety of dances and I think when he was younger, he liked the fast paced stuff and could pull it flawlessly. But try to find a man that can do THOSE moves the way he could at THAT age. I think he just experimented with different styles and found that he liked to tell a story with dance more than a fast paced number.

Que de la nostalgie des années poétiques qui n'existent plus qu'aujourd'hui !!!.... Hélas ! que du regret avec ces belles années 1950..

BubbaTheBulldog Because back then it took real genuine talent, and years of hard slog honing their craft while working their way up through the clubs and theatre circuits before they made it. Today, people want instant stardom with just one appearance miming to a tape on 'The X Factor' or 'Britain's/America's Got Talent' 🙄

Has anyone observed that Gene Kelly's choreography is the forerunner to Bob Fosse's routines in "All That Jazz" "Chicago" and other dance projects? Fosse worked on musical films at MGM and became close with both Astaire and Kelly, who were making films like "Singin In The Rain" and "The Band Wagon", that had innovative dance numbers.

Must have been incredible to have been living back in those times. TV/entertainment is now 24 hours a day so it never goes off unlike the 50s and 60s. Back in those days, people must have had stuff to look forward to the next week. It's no wonder people say we only have 30 second attention spans these days.

TV was very different in the 50s and 60s. No recording devices at home. Almost no movies on TV. You went to the theater. If you missed a show you might hope it's going to be on during summer reruns.

Perhaps because of his stocky frame, Gene Kelly always gave me the impression that he had put a lot of hard work into learning to dance, and became really good at it. Donald O'Connor gave me the impression that he didn't need to learn; it just came naturally to him. Probably this natural spontaneity came from hours of hard practice.
