As a person on the autism spectrum I can say that "the predator" doesn't handle autism very realistically. For me I'm great at drawing and fact memorization but when it comes to practical things, my brain is like a car that has extreme difficulty turning over. I also have difficulty reading certain social cues (typically the subtle ones), a short attention span if the topic doesn't align with my current interests, I occasionally act out funny scenes from movies or cartoons out of nowhere, and I have mild misophonia. For those of you who don't know, misophonia is a neurological disorder where certain sounds trigger involuntary fear, distress, and/or anger and the more you hear the sound the worse it gets. The sounds that trigger me are wet smacking sounds (like a dog gnawing on his foot or licking his junk) and sqeaking noises (like dog toys or the wet shoes of my a#&hole classmates who squeaked them on purpose)
I was diagnosed with autism 2 years ago, while watching this movie again, it honestly made me want to puke, everything is wrong with it. Otherwise I understand the sound thing, for me every little sound make me go to normal to defensive mode in one sec
@@hollowslayer9916 I was diagnosed since 10th grade at a meeting, so yeah. I also hate loud sounds and bright lights because it bothers my ears(and eyes) and it's hurting them so much that I cried, it's painful. But luckily I got headphones that'll block the noise, but I never got a new pair of sunglasses sadly.
I'm also a good drawer(in fact I wanted to be a cartoonist one day) but I'm very unlucky at having people who makes loud noises (besides my people don't even like quietness) but usually I have to fit in like everyone else (despite the fact that I'm having trouble communicating with people, I'm very sensitive to light and loud noises, and I do very poor eye contact).
Kind of how I feel about this movie's portrayal of Tourettes, People with Tourettes have some tic but Hollywood loves to rub in the public's face that the only tic of Tourettes is random vulgarity.
Alteori: *Gives a valid and hilarious criticism of a movie that's a mustard stain on a beloved franchise* Me: *Nods and completely agrees and get a chuckle from the jokes here and there* Also me the entire video: May I pet the fox?
Still laughing at a quote from another video about this movie: “So apparently it’s never been about trophies at all. Predators go all over the universe hunting for autism to add to their own DNA so they can evolve and survive harsher environments.”
Even better, they're going to get those survival traits from a species that's apparently not going to be able to survive in that planet's harsher environment.
Even the fan film "AVP Redemption" was better than this film, and that was made three years prior to this movie! Sure, it had a smaller budget when it came to the effects, but it at least had a compelling story and a main character we could root for! Just rewatched it, and it still holds up better than this movie. Would also recommend "Predator: Dark Ages" which also has a far more compelling cast of human characters, made the same year as "AVP Redemption". Both were made with heart and still manage to pay homage to the source material without it feeling ham-fisted or forced just to appease the fans.
No amount of alcohol managed to make this movie any better for me. I went in with minimal expectations. I defied my own gut reaction that was screaming at me, "Dude, just rewatch any of the last three movies, or even the first AVP instead." Urgh, everything about this film just sucks. The humor is like a vulgar tryhard attempting to recapture the spirit of the previous films, the Steroid Predator sounds like a cool idea until you see it, I don't know why the Hell the kid's plot was even included, and who in the Hell thought making Predators care about global warming instead of just being badass hunters was a good idea?
The actors name was Steven Wilder. The day after he filmed his scene, he was arrested. Then Black thought, "Fuck it, I'll cut him out of the movie." I told my family about this while watching the film on Christmas 2018.
Black was friends with Wilder and wanted him to get back on his feet. Unfortunately, he never told any of the cast and crew about Wilder's past. Thankfully, he only had a very minor role in the story.
Something that always bothered me about this movie is that we learn that the normalish predator came to Earth to help humanity, but the first thing it does when it crashes on Earth is kill and skin people... wtf. I think the concept of Predators studying other species and adding their DNA to their own to become better hunters is a cool concept, too bad the movie dropped the ball on that. I also hate that the super predator is bulletproof until he isn't for the plot. Predators are scary because they're cunning, not because they're invincible. The whole fight in the woods at night was just weightless action.
I dont like the dna concept at all. Predators are interesting because of their weapons to me, and i feel them altering their dna isnt a very predator thing to do. 1 if it was to happen that would be dishonerable as hell to do, and 2 the concept fits the alien franchise more than predator. You're welcome to change my mind.
@@DireNemesis Plus there is only two things they would really get from humans, first is eye sight thats not reliant on heat, and then use their helmets for that vision. second would be the ability to survive in none hot weather since they can only survive earth for extended periods of time on its hottest days. other wise they dont do to well in the cold.

Shane Black starred in the first one alongside Arnold...he directed this film and I was hoping it'd be as good as that first film was, but the mark was definitely missed
Saying Shane Black starred in the original is being extremely generous. His entire character arc was telling some shitty jokes and being the first to die.
1. Being an actor doesn't mean you can direct or understand the writing behind the movies you acted in 2. He didn't "star" in the first Predator, he was the first onscreen kill by the Predator while being comedic relief
@@Maxisamo1 1.i was hoping that by shear time spent on the set of the first movie he would've seen how it worked and been able to use some of that in his film 2. And he had several speaking lines and is shown in the credits right there with all of the other actors who starred in the film. I didn't say he was the protagonist or anything
When the predator uses the chopped-off hand to do the thumbs up to the driver, a possible reason for him doing this could be to trick the driver into driving him closer to his stuff. But we all know the actual reason for it was to make the audience go "ha ha" for the millionth time for this movie.
Oh dear Christ this movie pissed me off to the highest degree especially how they treated autism. Maybe the only thing that caught my attention that was fun was the big ass hulking predator
My son is high-functioning autistic and he DOES have that savant memory thing going on, but it's a VERY selective thing... If he's interested in something he'll remember EVERYTHING about it. Like he can literally tell you what every single menu item consists of at taco bell.. He even knows items that taco bell hasn't sold since before his lifetime.. but if it's something like a school subject he doesn't care about, his brain has no time for it. Lol He and I went to see The Predator at the theater and I was pretty disgusted with the whole thing because it really shat all over the established lore.. but it inspired my son to tell me he's next step in evolution for at least two weeks after we watched it.
I like what they tried to do but it was executed poorly and just a redesigned wish version of the Predators movie from 2010 both movies have the original predator and then a new more powerful bigger predator that single handedly kills the original then proceeds to try to kill the humans while successfully doing so instead of killing the main two characters
Some of the visuals were very beautiful and the alien dog was the highlight of the movie for me. Everything else felt so unearned. None of the human characters were memorable. I have never hated a movie, but this is the only movie I hate this one because of how autism is depicted. It is an actual conspiracy that autism somehow "unlocks or enhances human mind", which makes this movie even WORSE. It actively harms the people's understanding of autism. I despise it.
Sadly this movie will be remembered by me forever. I had promised to take my son to see this the day it was coming out and then unfortunately my wife had a still born that day. SO all my time was at the hospital and I felt so bad BC not only what the wife I had to deal with and our loss, but it was all my son's birthday. I ended watching the film by myself late at night a day later, BC I juts needed to escape life for just a lil while and then a week later took my son to see it. I still hated it, but my son liked it, but he was also still 11. Now when he watches this he just shakes his head, his almost 14 now. So, my dumbass paid twice to see this trash film and didn't help escape anything. IN a sense Shane Black made that week worse for me...
Fun fact: the game Predator Hunting Grounds contains audio logs from Dutch, Isibelle and Sean Keyes (a scientist from The Predator) with ones from the latter establishing the armor from the end of The Predator actually sucks; its brittle, it had enough power for 24 seconds and trying to use the plasma cannons caused the suit to overload
That lab scene pisses me off so much. An R-rated movie that pussed out of nudity. Really shows how lame movies have gotten. No wonder people choose to watch the older stuff and the new creators are so desperate they try to demonize retro.
The lack of nudity wasn’t really the issue here, besides many great movies have similar scenes. Plus, many actors/actresses are not comfortable with that kind of stuff being shown
@@peterstoric6560 yeah but it shows how movies have fallen from the all in energy they had back Ithe day to bloated TV tier. Also they are most handsomely compensated so can't really see them as the victim in that situation. Just comes with the job and should be sucked up by the actor/actress
@@aurahoneydew9607 but there was honestly no real reason to show her nudity in the movie, some films have nudity as a way to express how vulnerable a character is emotionally or if they were in the middle of sex. If you were offered 25,000 dollars would you appear fully nude in a blockbuster movie? Some would say yes and some would say no, different people have different standards
@@aurahoneydew9607 and many films that would rely on it are pretty bad, take a look at the Friday the 13th reboot. That movie was basically a porno and it was really bad
I'm ok with this movie lore wise cause the way I see it is the predators in this movie are from a badblood hybrid clan, Shane Black said that it may not be all predators that hybridized themselves but its definitely a specific group of angry predators that aren't above cheating. So when it comes to lore I'm ok with it cause that's how I see these predators.
@@aiiv7839 now what bothers me lore wise is the predator killer suit, predators do have weapons specifically for war but that suit looks like overkill, like something humans would make if given access to predator technology. Even the Rouge Space Tribe, a badblood clan of highly technology advanced mercenary predators, don't wear that much firepower. Another thing that bothers me is, I don't know if this is true, I thought the predator dogs were predators given some form of dog or wolf DNA turning them into what they are.
I also like that idea and it makes some sense for the movie's benefit and it stays much truer to the source material but that still doesn't save the movie for being terrible. That we have to rely on outside sources in order to fill in the gaps of what the movie should already have filled in.
@@BSM-vw6cf I figured they were the predator dogs from predators mixed with pred DNA. I also dont mind the using other DNA to enhance themselves, i mind the whole autistic angle they took with it. If they would have connected it to the whole they come during the hottest days of the year thing and had them want human DNA to help them survive colder climate better then id be fine, or even to gain Humans better eye sight since they could put thermal vision into their helmets when needed, as human vision would help much more during one to one combat with no helmets.
28:29* this was confirmed in an alternative ending that this was going to be Newt from ALIENS, having been cryogenically frozen, who would help McKenna figure out a way to fight the Predator species, but leaves us with a big question: Do Predators Time Travel!?😱 When Fox executives saw the movie, they hated that cameo, and gave us the IRON MAN/PREDATOR suit instead.
Shane Black has directed some good movies AND written a lot good ones, too. But I'm sure this is one of those cases where the studio basically told him to make a Marvel-style _Predator_ movie.
5:36 positive or negative stereotype is still a stereotype and can very damaging towards the people. With the positive is basically making a bar that some people just cannot reach or fulfill because of their own circumstance.
What’s also stupid is the fact that the predator who wanted to “help” the humans didn’t even think to use that predator killer armor to kill that assassin predator… and that Jesus guy didn’t even think to jump over the shield or even get under it, he just kept gawking and shooting at the shields…..
My god such a horrible damn movie!!! The new prey movie was redemption for this absolute piece of degeneracy. That seen at the end when they asked what the predator killer was and he said "that's my new suit" I wanted to deck him in the face.
This is the only Predator movie that I have not seen, and after seeing your review...this is really strange. I think I made the right choice by skipping it, and my father, a Predator fan, did not like it. Thank goodness for Prey! Also, I do like Keegan-Michael Key.
Purity of the hunt is a central part of the Yautja culture. They all despise the concept of genetic manipulation to recreate themselves and attempting to bring it up could get you exiled just for bringing it up. It feels like this was written by someone who did no research at all.
Fun Predator lore fact: Genetic modification on a Predator is a Sin in Predator culture. They’ll kill or exiled a Predator if they did that. So this movie MAKES no sense if you know their lore and culture.
Savant syndrome *does* exist in autism, but it is fairly rare. The numbers vary but it is no more than 1 in 10. Which, considering autism is only a small percentage of the population means that Autistic savants are very rare. So it's interesting that this has become such a trope. That being said, psychology is regularly misused in films and TV now. The idea that we use 1% of our brain is a total myth yet we have seen several movies/shows about it.
I was so hyped for this film for like 3 months. I even put the poster up in my room (very cringe now). I watched the movie and I got the exact some feeling I got when watching dominion, that being I was trying to convince myself that what I was watching was good, but then after leaving the theatre a deep feeling of sadness set in.
Here's an interesting fact, SeanKeyes is the son of Peter Keyes, and Sean Keyes is played by Jake Busey (who is the son of Gary Busey), also I was like damn when the small predator shot 5 people with an M16
My fiancé is an RBT that works with children, teens, and young adults with autism. She HATES this movie cause of them basically saying that people with autism have the highest IQ and photographic memory. 9/10 times this isn't the cause there is a small percentage that can do this but they don't have severe autism. I'm glad you pointed this out in this movie
I always saw this movie like it was written by someone that has watched the other movies and wrongly thought "you know what would be cool..." The Predators here have no personality and just kill people. I won't even get into the slap in face they give veterans with PTSD .
I'm gonna say for the autism part that you was talking about. The only reason why they can get away with it and why in terms its okay is cause there's many different sides to the spectrum perfect example for me is that I've got aspergus syndrome which is on the spectrum and my younger sister has echoailea ((dunno how to spell it but that was my shot)) and of course both of us are on the spectrum but we both work in different ways like she will remember and repeat everything she hears where as I cant remember a convo I had 10 minutes ago 🤷🏽♂️ so thats why I say it works in many different ways and you can't really compare autism 🤷🏽♂️ but yeeeee love the vid either way not attacking or anything just thought I'd share some knowledge

@@zzodysseuszz just because the death scene of prey is a bit off doesn't make it bad. It's actually something different from the other titles. The Predator (2018) is the waste of money film that exists for some reason.
The Super Autism thing is actually a condition known as Savant Syndrome. Savant Syndrome can apply to any mental disability that strangely produces extreme talent in one area like they may not be able to tie their shoes but they can play a piano like Mozart. It's mostly associated with autism due to the movie Rain Man and yes it's pretty offensive. In high school I literally had a girl asked me what I'm good at after telling her I'm autistic, it's kind of like just assuming any black person you meet is great at sports.
It's so surprising that Disney (under the 20th Century Studios logo) was able to make a better Predator movie with Prey than Fox did (who no longer owns the franchise after selling their IPS to Disney in 2019).
I absolutely despise the scene with the MC in uniform. Those patches and such, don't mean what they think it means. Some are correct, most aren't. BTW, that blue ribbon? doesn't exist plus it's on the wrong arm, same for the shields. Where his ranks should be, they aren't. The tie doesn't even look like it has been tied correctly. The pins are done in almost the opposite way. I hate that scene with all of my heart. Those shields don't exist BTW.
I am autistic myself, mild enough to come across as normal but something off to others. Was quiet when I was little but now I can't shut up so others can talk. Used to flap my hands, but still walk on my toes now and again. I have a somewhat better ability to remember certain things mentally and visually, but I have never heard of this level of memory.
A laughed at it. I have Asperger’s so I made these jokes after the movie about how I can now read your mind and instantly learn how to steal your bank account.
Very interested to hear your thoughts on the new Primal episode. I watched it early, and I won't spoil anything but I must say this episode is also something else.
As an autistic person, the kid pissed me off so much. He was annoying and was a walking plot point more than a character. Also, having autism just means you struggle with social queues and have a different method of thinking. I felt like I was being pandered to whenever he was on screen. I was practically begging the stupid super predator to kill him
it still amazes me that every youtube ranking of Predator movies doesn't put this movie as the worst of the series.. They usually put AVP requiem as the worst but as least that film had some horror moments and was consistent with the lore, and didn't try to destroy the franchise. The Predator is total garbage. It had a good general premise and casting, but every aspect of the execution was terrible.
Fun fact. You pointed out that the character Sean Keys is the son of the character who was in charge of tracking the predator in the 2nd film. But it's not just the film. The actor in this movie Jake Busey is the real life son of the actor who was in the 2nd predator, Gary Busey
I don’t know much about the predators but what I do know is they’re a post scarcity society and their hunting is recreational and a way to show they’re a worthy mate and female Predators are larger then the males. So when I saw the bigger Predator I thought it was female and the smaller one pist it off somehow.
Also I think they tried to portray Asperger's I have it and I have great memory but they really overdid it in the movie it's hard for me to explain sorry
I’d rather not be represented than have this drivel be how my condition is represented. Reminds me of the useless presentations teachers held at school on why you shouldn’t bully me. Instead of cracking down on the bullies. It’s humiliating
The things I liked about this movie: The scene where the fugitive predator breaks out of the lab, and the way they translated the Yautja language subtitles. The things I didn’t like about this movie: everything else
21:55 For awhile I think the female Yautja were supposed to be bigger. But outside of comics and some games we never have seen a female Predator/Yautja. There is an Aliens Vs Predator book that was an adaption of the comics, also called Prey (which many want a movie version of) where the main Predator/Yautja, Broken Tusk, goes to save the main human character, Machiko, who gets hit with xenomorph blood. He rips off her body armor and is kind of shocked when he sees that she has breasts cause he apparently thought humans were like them as he also recalls the female of his species being bigger including remembering how one was large enough to throw him around a room with ease last time he mated.
In reference to 5:00, many thanks for saying that :) As an otherwise average person w/Aspergers, I feel like a lot of media puts a lot of pressure on me to be something I'm not. Yes, some autists are geniuses, but some aren't. That's why it's called a spectrum. It reminds me of "model minority" stereotypes (E.g. All asian ppl are hard-working, good at math, etc). Honestly, the most relatable media portrayal for me personally is Morty from "Rick and Morty". Also, in reference to 3:50, the ending is the 1st thing that came to mind.
@@princestellabrown7430 that's rough, but don't worry, in the end they understand a bit when you tell them (I know it's not easy)
Kind of how I feel about this movie's portrayal of Tourettes,
People with Tourettes have some tic but Hollywood loves to rub in the public's face that the only tic of Tourettes is random vulgarity.

Still laughing at a quote from another video about this movie:
“So apparently it’s never been about trophies at all.
I defied my own gut reaction that was screaming at me, "Dude, just rewatch any of the last three movies, or even the first AVP instead."
Urgh, everything about this film just sucks.
They made them care about global warming to try and raise awareness unfortunately the rest of the movie sucked so…
Still I am more willing to rewatch this movie than AvP: Requiem xD
Okay i agree, i didn't know you were bubba jay from jeff dunham
@@Hadar1991 Agreed. Tis a slim margin, but at least this is Dude-Bro bad, not trashy, horribly unpleasant bad, like AVP Requiem.
The actors name was Steven Wilder.
The day after he filmed his scene, he was arrested. Then Black thought, "Fuck it, I'll cut him out of the movie." I told my family about this while watching the film on Christmas 2018.
Why would you rewatch it
@@Lancersilva It was on BLU Ray
Cause the plot was literally rewritten halfway through production
Just shows what a hot mess it is
I dont like the dna concept at all.
@@strenuousspider9525 I dont think cold affects them, they could be choosing the hottest times because then body heat will be even easier to see. Pretty sure they cant breath oxygen though, so they could get that.

Potential to weaponizing autism is a new low for the Predator, with a full on iron man suit knockoff to boot.
So was prey but that movie gets nothing but praise yet is equally as bad as this.

Shane Black starred in the first one alongside Arnold...he directed this film and I was hoping it'd be as good as that first film was, but the mark was definitely missed
It was missed, shot over, and horribly looked over
Saying Shane Black starred in the original is being extremely generous. His entire character arc was telling some shitty jokes and being the first to die.
Oh no he didn't just miss it, he shot something behind him and it ricocheted off of it hitting him in the head, absolute garbage movie.
1. Being an actor doesn't mean you can direct or understand the writing behind the movies you acted in
2. He didn't "star" in the first Predator, he was the first onscreen kill by the Predator while being comedic relief
@@Maxisamo1 1.i was hoping that by shear time spent on the set of the first movie he would've seen how it worked and been able to use some of that in his film
2. And he had several speaking lines and is shown in the credits right there with all of the other actors who starred in the film. I didn't say he was the protagonist or anything
Thank goodness that we have Prey, it felt like a breath of fresh air to go back to its roots.
Nahh, Prey's pretty darn shitty too.
Yk this is still canon
Lol
He and I went to see The Predator at the theater and I was pretty disgusted with the whole thing because it really shat all over the established lore.. but it inspired my son to tell me he's next step in evolution for at least two weeks after we watched it.
I like what they tried to do but it was executed poorly and just a redesigned wish version of the Predators movie from 2010 both movies have the original predator and then a new more powerful bigger predator that single handedly kills the original then proceeds to try to kill the humans while successfully doing so instead of killing the main two characters
I hated this film, but I don't blame the kid *at all* for threatening the bullies. If more bullies got smacked down, there'd be fewer of them.
It's so counterintuitive that the predator kills humans and refuses to communicate with them even though his mission was to save them lol
This movie needs to be classified as a hate crime.
But I’m the movie it was a pure form of survival and honestly it doesn’t need to show. And, actors do have standards that money can’t get past.
Honestly, if they included that in some way, then this movie would be somewhat more forgivable in terms of lore-building.
No the lore is stupid
It’s literally autism is my super power the plot.
28:29* this was confirmed in an alternative ending that this was going to be Newt from ALIENS, having been cryogenically frozen, who would help McKenna figure out a way to fight the Predator species, but leaves us with a big question:
Do Predators Time Travel!?😱
When Fox executives saw the movie, they hated that cameo, and gave us the IRON MAN/PREDATOR suit instead.
This movie sure is proof that even if you acted in a good movie, doesn't mean you can be good at directing a movie
Still can't believe someone green lit a project where it says "and the Predator wants to inject himself with autism" in it.

Purity of the hunt is a central part of the Yautja culture. They all despise the concept of genetic manipulation to recreate themselves and attempting to bring it up could get you exiled just for bringing it up. It feels like this was written by someone who did no research at all.
Thank God someone finally agreed
True. I've heard we use 10% but then some scientists say we use 10% at a time or of different places
I was so hyped for this film for like 3 months. I even put the poster up in my room (very cringe now). Hey Alteori I was wondering if you would ever do more jurassic World povs or continuing some of your old one?

Its been 4 years and i can still remember physically cringing at the "Predator Killer" scene. It was way too much 🤡😂

@@timothyhoenikker9641 I have mixed thoughts on Predator 2, personally I prefer Predators out of all the sequels.

Whenever I do watch this, it's purely for the special effects. That is all.
This movie made me die inside.
I was practically begging the stupid super predator to kill him
“A walking plot device”, it’s pretty damn fitting for a kid who has nothing else to offer.
That LITERALLY isn't "all Autism is" im so tired of people using Autism as a character trait 🙄
it still amazes me that every youtube ranking of Predator movies doesn't put this movie as the worst of the series..
They usually put AVP requiem as the worst but as least that film had some horror moments and was consistent with the lore, and didn't try to destroy the franchise.
The Predator is total garbage. It had a good general premise and casting, but every aspect of the execution was terrible.
This is unironically my favorite predator movie, its soooo bad its good. Bro really blew his own head off with the shoulder canon my g i was dead 💀 😂
It definitely is so bad it's good but I don't really consider it a Canon predator movie
Man thank you for saving me from watching this! I would have hated it but I always enjoy your recaps!
Prey was a big improvement
That isn't saying much. Lol

What happened to that dog? I thought it was going to attack one of the Predators but nothing happened.
The most abysmal movie ever, definitely a franchise killer
I agree, and to think it was directed by one of the cast of the original (and only the best Predator movie)
The things I liked about this movie: The scene where the fugitive predator breaks out of the lab, and the way they translated the Yautja language subtitles.

Will you do the AvP movies next?
AvP movies are awesome I hope we'll see em next
In reference to 5:00, many thanks for saying that :) As an otherwise average person w/Aspergers, I feel like a lot of media puts a lot of pressure on me to be something I'm not. Yes, some autists are geniuses, but some aren't. That's why it's called a spectrum. It reminds me of "model minority" stereotypes (E.g. All asian ppl are hard-working, good at math, etc). Honestly, the most relatable media portrayal for me personally is Morty from "Rick and Morty". Also, in reference to 3:50, the ending is the 1st thing that came to mind. I always thought it weird that he just claimed the suit for himslef :/
Fun fact, the actor who plays as the son of the guy from Predator 2 is Jake Busy, Gary Busy's son, who played as that federal investigator.
