Makes Toothless look identical to his animated counterpart. Makes Hiccup look identical to his animated counterpart. Apparently can't find a blond-haired and blue-eyed girl in all of Hollywood to play Astrid. Not that I really care. I wouldn't watch this crap if they'd found the perfect actress for Astrid. It's just funny how the director is all "we weren't shooting for total accuracy" when they've taken no liberties elsewhere.
there is nothing really great and soul-filled after 2 movies, only this + episodes fill my storage and have my respect. (3rd has cool visuals and lovestory, but is already has weird scenario (+draconic side) and is already started the downfall)
I’m a black woman and I’m a lot less excited about this movie now. Why can’t Vikings just look like Vikings? I miss escapism in film. It’s hard to escape when you know modern day DEI is inserted into a movie like this.
@ I mean, not really. If she plays Astrid well then she will be nothing like hiccup, especially in the first movie. As for why no blonde wig? Well, idk really. She doesn’t exactly command Star power to look “like herself”, so maybe it was the director’s choice?
Blond hair is banned from this movie. The original blond hair of Astrid, Fishlegs, Ruffnut and Tuffnut was changed to brown or a dark reddish color. I guess the director does not like blond people.
Jews don't like Europeans to have a cultural identity.. Look up how and why the European Union formed.. Jews don't do well in a society that values their own people..
Yea seriously just have them dye their hair blond. Again not a big deal or really big request or expectation to see actors playing preexisting character to try and look as close to them as possible.
@@aclevername7613 True. I mean, just look at the Targaryens from GoT or HotD. Or Legolas. None of the actors have the hair color of their roles and they still made them work perfectly.
As a blonde girl with blue eyes, have I always had “representation” in media? Yes, princesses and (stupid) mean girls. But blonde, kick ass, tomboy, adolescent, not super girly, characters that were still “one of the girls”? Not so much. You have Astrid, who got changed. You had Annabeth from Percy Jackson, who also got changed. Lyra from Golden Compass, also turned brunette. I struggle to think of any more honestly. I don’t care much about skin tone but let them keep their blonde hair, blonde box braids or Afro if you please, but I’m tired of only seeing myself as a the girly princess, a dumb blonde or a bitch. It makes me sad because I remember loving these characters as a young girl because I felt they sorta understood me. Edit: Buffy has been added to the list of kick ass blondes. Eowyn (and Galadriel) have also been added to the list. Elisabeth Swan is kinda halfway making it on the list
If you're looking for one, check out Buffy Summers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Probably one of THE kickass blonde tomboys who's also one of the girls.
If you want black characters, just make a film based on African mythology, there are plenty of interesting stories to work with. This is just a deliberate humiliation ritual.
Y’all say this like we just don’t try to tell our own stories. We do. 9 times out of 10 they either flop or only take off within our own community, or we’re some type of animal for most of the movie (Tiana). Very rarely do we get one that blows up. That being said, this is not black people doing this. This is Hollywood doing what they know will make them more money.
If they had gone down the route similar to the one avatar did of introducing other tribes to the film from other parts of the world who also were also aware of dragons and had evolved to living with dragons, who had gone in search of their now "lost" dragons only to end up in burg where the dragons were last said to have been seen It would have made for a far more compelling story and would have respected both cultural backgrounds and maybe even introduced some more types of dragons that we had not yet seen in the previous animations. If the diversity still isn't enough and the plot required inter racial relationships why not establish that between hiccups children and the new tribal leaders children to really drive the point home, erasure can only do so much, people of color need to be represented authentically and correctly as do every other ethnic group or culture.
The only thing that Hollywood is trying to tell us is that black people are thieves that have to steal everything because they can't come up with their own ideas. Fuck Hollywood.
Book Gobber had a wild red beard, Hiccup in the books has red hair and Astrid’s book counterpart, Camicazi, has long wild pale blond hair. It’s an adaptation, not a remake 😭
I think it’s funny how the people who support the black annabeth choice conveniently forgot about the fact that there was an outrage over annabeth being a brunette in the movies that shall not be named. They’re trying so hard to make it about racism when it really comes down to wanting the characters to match their established description in the story
Yes! Like I was so confused by the choice to make her black. Her being blonde was one of the driving factors for her, because she was stereotype to be stupid because of it.
They also were furious that tv Percy didn’t have black hair and green eyes. Asking why they didn’t just dye his hair. And then people had to defend percy’s blonde hair. And ppl who drew fanart of blonde percy had people fighting in their comment sections. Fans always want the visuals to be exactly what they remember. They already feel insulted that these remakes dare to exist in the first place. Changing the appearance just makes them even more upset.
I think the argument is that complaining about it is harmful because black representation is too important. People getting mad over hair and eye color is fine because that doesn't involve the representation of a minority.
Which is hilarious, when they're portraying the one ethnic group in the world renowned for their blonde hair and blue eyes. Even in modern times, after Scandinavia has taken in millions and millions of refugees from Africa and the Middle East, 60% of our population is still blonde. But every single time they portray our ancestors in their glory days, they minimize blonde hair and blue eyes, and they always swap out a handful of the characters with black or Asian people. It doesn't bother me on a personal level at all. But it feels so wrong story-telling wise. Wouldn't you want the locations in your fantasy movie to feel exotic? You're building a fantasy world based on real people (the vikings). When every faraway location in every movie and TV show looks like downtown LA, no place ever feels different or exotic.
@@hylianchriss And even with that 60%, 20% of our current population was born in another country, so we're still 80% blonde and blue eyed if we're counting actually Swedish people, which is pretty much the same statistic it was in the 70s and 80s, before mass immigration.
They always get super upset at people pointing out these inconsistencies because it sheds light on the fact that these singular characters being changed was a conscious decision. Then people want to know why the decision was made. And the reason is shallow, they know it, that is why they get so defensive.
@wrenithilduincats Vikings were not a race, they were a lifestyle. So the braid types dont matter. Its a fantasy movie with dragons, not a historical movie. Y'all act like the people are the only reason you watched the movies when in reality we didnt give a damn about them, we just watched for the dragons.
No seriously. Actors HISTORICALLY have dyed their hair or worn wigs to better fit the description of a character in plays or movies BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT THE CHARACTER IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE
Let us take a moment to remember our fallen gingers and blondes.... Wally West Iris West Barry Allen Ariel MaryJane Heimdall Catwoman Starfire April O'Neal Annie Triss Merigold Sarah Miller Bow (She-Ra) Astrid
Wally West ??? If you want to talk about CW version. Wallace already existed in comics so it's not a race swap. There is Wally and Wallace (way too complicated to explain but there is the original white ginger version of Wally and the newer version. Black Wallace got introduced like 12 years ago in comics)
Wow you guys are just loud and wrong. Other races of people have plenty of diversity not sure what kind of crazy yall smoked. And this weird obsession you WS have for Black folks too is strange.
"Why are you making Hiccup look like Hiccup and not making Astrid look like Astrid?" This right here is my exact problem. If they had changed up every character in some significant way, none of this would be an issue. They're picking and choosing what to carry from animation to live action and it's unfortunately going to cause more nitpicking than they probably want.
Wrong. Had they changed every main character in a similar way, it would be a huge issue. It would be a complete box office BOMB. It's already gonna do shit numbers, going how it is now, but even worse then.
@@stefankroon4615 I meant none of this would be an issue in the sense that if they'd changed every character in some way and made it all completely different, nobody would have a legitimate reason to complain about things like Astrid's hair color but because they're picking and choosing what's directly carried over from animation to live action, suddenly the complaints are valid.
At this point, I bet it was on purpose. Plan was: We put mix kid in role of blond character, so If this ludicrous movie won't be well received and lose money, we put a blame on racist, and so we keep our cushy jobs.
I hate when they say "why do you care, they're just fictional characters?" When these are the same people who preach that representation in media is important. What about the mountain of ginger characters that have been changed to black? Do little ginger kids not deserve to "see themselves" in media? These race swaps only ever go one way.
People forget that gingers have faced a lot of prejudice and oppression. In medieval Europe, they were accused of witchcraft, especially if they were women. In the 19th century, gingers were accused of being promiscuous (especially the women). In ancient Greece and Rome, red headed slaves were fetishized and fetched higher prices (especially...eh, you get it). I think people tend to overlook this because most gingers are white. But its small wonder they are the ones who are more likely race swapped with black characters because gingers are a minority, so its only natural we swap them with a different minority!
The other thing I didn’t appreciate about this casting of Astrid is how different her actual features are. Astrid in the movies has big ears and thin lips, which are features you don’t see much representation of because they’re not considered beautiful, but she is beautiful with these features. Then they cast someone with full and pouty lips and very beauty-standard-adhering features that we see on most chosen actresses these days. I miss seeing more characters with diverse and atypical features be considered the beauty of the film.
The thin lips is actually a reflection of classic European beauty standards, plus us Europeans evolved to have thinner lips then the other races for a reason. As someone from north-west Europe, it very much is beneficial. I mean, winters? Hello? Do you know just how freaking cold it can get? Your lips get way less chapped when they're thin! This is one of the ways why I disagree with the actress looking 'white passing'. She doesn't have thin lips or an upturnt nose, features we developped because it's more beneficial in a cold climate. I'm of mixed heritage, as I've got some Indian heritage a couple of generations ago from my dad's side. I look like it and wouldn't be a correct fit for Astrid either but at least I have the nordic features I listed. If the story was even a little faithful to the climate, the actress' lips should be badly chapped looking because that's real life. But alas, this movie was made by someone who clearly never had to smear vaseline over their faces and ears just so you wouldn't be in pain by the time you reached school.
Bruh, nobody thought Astrid was ugly in those movies. Finding an actor that's good and looks enough like that is probably not the easiest thing done. I'm not saying I agree with their choice of actor, but you're making it sound like other people consider Astrid ugly with how you worded stuff, but nobody thought that. The difference is, Astrid is fictional and not proportional in any fashion, and therefore "finding an actor with those features" isn't easy.
Every actor looks different, why call out just Astrid? Hiccup went from chubby faced to chiseled jawline, Ruffnut and tuffnut lost their long hair and ruffnut lost her long face, Gobber lost his moustache and blonde, hell I’d say the only character that hasn’t changed is Stoick
@@heehee845 She also just doesn't look Nordic. Like you said, her features are not like Astrid's. And even though her skin color isn't very dark, you can still see her ethnicity in her and it's not Viking. At LEAST making her hair blonde would have helped, but they didn't even do that.
To closely connected to a fiery personality and Tors rage... and to the Irish people😅 @somecallmesenpai9710 so none remembers that vikings/Scandinavians can also be Redheads.😂
This whole movie is like swapping out the Black Panther cast with people of Asian or Indian descent, or giving Black Panther a red wig. I don’t understand why we can’t just keep culture culture anymore. They constantly scream about cultural appropriation yet consistently do it themselves. Also, I agree, why did they not do casting calls saying they want a specific look anymore?
THIS! They always complain about people "appropriating" black culture but turn around and to it to other cultures. It's so annoying. Like just leave the movies and books alone if the "lack of represention" bothers you so much or whatever.
You see they keep doing this to female leads and co-leads because they want to indoctrinate young women and girls into their ideology and thus they target that demographic more than most others.
I may be venturing into conspiracy theorists territory, but I wonder if that's being done because a certain president-elect does seem to show a preference for blondes?
"Gaslighting" perfectly sums up everything about the live-action, thank you! Like they clearly didn't bother to cast people who look the part with some few exceptions cause Gerald Butler is just perfect for the part providing authenticity, this trailer even feels like it's tapping into people's nostalgia of the og movie and it just misses the point with things like this crucial scene of Hiccup trying to kill Toothless, they just didn't get the atmosphere and tone right, this moment is supposed to have tention and be very serious, and the live action just didn't get this tone with the expressions being really out of place, this scene in live action gives me the vibe "oh are you really going to kill this cute innocent animal?" meanwhile Toothless in the og movie atp was supposed to be a wild animal who wasn't tamed and feared Hiccup and thus we get the famous line of Hiccup "I wouldn't kill him because he looked as frightened as I was"
"We're crafting a fantasy, not a historical fact." Worldbuilding 101 is that if you can't maintain believable consistency, you lose the audience's willingness to suspend their disbelief. Therefore your craftmanship is shoddy garbage and belongs in a bargain bin.
As a black woman…. CAN THEY PLEASE STOP BLACKWASHING MY FAVORITE WHITE CHARACTERS?! Astrid was strikingly beautiful in the movies and her platinum blonde hair in the last one was breathtaking. DEI needs to die and give us our characters back. They would get triggered if Tiana from princess and the frog was white or Asian instead of black, and they know that! Also girl pop off at the end😂
No but Disney's Princess and the Frog was also completely changed to be its own version 😂 but they did it kinda tastefully (like change almost everything except the concept of the cursed frog prince and maiden's kiss) so people liked it as it was... But afterwards.. these people do sloppier jobs with time and we simply can notice it almost immediately.
@@JaxBox1 u don't get it. its not the fact that she's mixed its the fact that they chose her black heritage to show Astrid as a character, she has black box braids. if she is also white, why didnt they put her as a blonde, she had blonde hair before? it just doesnt make sense.

This! One of my favorite childhood books (Woodwalkers) recently got a live action, and they also made the protagonist's first love interest black, who was initially white. The funny thing about this tho is that the actual love interest he ends up with is Inuit, but her actress (while luckily being native at least) is now a lot more white passing since she's blonde, not black haired like in the books. Them casting all love interests as non-white just looks like a Cho chang moment atp... Also, when the author of the above mentioned books introduced the black actress, the first thing she wrote is that "she's happy the cast is so diverse". Talking about reducing that poor girl to her skin color...
Everyone talks about Astrid but nobody talks about how the rest of the cast don't look anywhere near to the original characters. The twins ain't twinning and ruffnut looks fat, snoutlout looks skinnier than hiccup, fishlegs also doesn't have the right hair color and the "twins" too ! Like is it that hard to do costumes and pick the right cast ? They just look fan made
I mean it makes sense. Have you seen the costume design for the Minecraft movie?...... Literally looks like they went to a Kohl's and bought the cheapest piece of clothing they could possibly find because they spent all their budget on animation......💀💀💀💀
They did that with "Ol' Sourpuss" as "Sue Storm" in "Fantastic Four" (2005) and "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" in 2007, and she _still_ looked lousy. She was just plain miscast, pure & simple & so's this girl. She may be a nice girl, she may even have some talent (though you have to wonder, if she got the role without an audition).... _but she's just plain wrong for this particular role._ There's nothing wrong with saying that, because it's true.
if they gave her a blonde wig it would fix everything right? So how come fishlegs has black hair and his casting is fine, how come the twins have orange hair and their casting is fine, if Nico Parker's race isn't the problem and its only the costume design, how are all the other characters different but Astrid is the only controversial one? Stoick's beard is more realistic and his costume is different to the animation but it still resembles Stoick beyond the changes, hiccup doesn't have green eyes but still resembles the character beyond that fact, astrid's costume still resembles her costume in the animated films, all that is different (assuming race doesn't matter like you said yourself) is the hair
@@jjeteuati264 people do have a problem with those things tho. Fishlegs can be excused, but the twins look nothing alike. Tuffnut looks exactly like how I would picture him but Ruff looks nothing similar to either her twin or her character as a whole. None of the blond characters are blond in the movie despite the fact that a. they're blond in the antimated, and b. Vikings are typically blond haired and blue eyed. If you looked for half a minute you'd find hundred of people pointing these things out.
I’m bloody pissed as well. How to drain your dragon animation may be amazing movie but it’s not appealing to me. The idea of Vikings that manage to pet Dragons is unreal.
Normally id 100% agree, because acolyte was oure dog 💩 But honestly iv read alot of racist comments, its actually just sad people still talk and act the way they are.
People call it representation but it’s not If you want representation make it! Come up with new stories, new shows, new movies. Recreating things that have already existed but changing a characters race is not good representation, it helps nothing, it doesn’t give you anything or add anything And also it’s only ever making characters black, where’s the other races? I’m really bad at explaining my thoughts so maybe this doesn’t make sense
As a history major in collage, I loathe that the How to train your DEI director tries to cherry-pick and justify that the Vikings were so racially diverse, since they "supposedly" sailed everywhere, and therefore must be racially inclusive. no they weren't, they actually were largely racist themselves, they enjoyed raiding Russia and taking Russian Slavs as slaves( that is where we get the term slave from, Slav.) They also took Angelo Saxon, and Celtic slaves, and conquered England and most of Ireland, till Brian Boru kicked them out. They also settled in Northern France and intermingled with the Gauls, there that is where we get "Normans." a people who are a mix of Vikings and Frankish Gauls. They establish the duchy of Normandy. Also it there is no historical documentation that they raided Sub-Sara Africa, if they had it would have been noteworthy like Leif Erikson's travels. they did raid a few Northern African Muslim Berber Colonies. There is even a Muslim explorer who went North into Scandinavia and gave a written account of a Viking funeral. Some Vikings even got employed by the byzantine empire in Modern day turkey as Elite units, Snake from Vinland Saga is an example of Byzantine trained Viking. they did however go to North America, and named it Vinland, which is today Canada. My ancestor Leif Erikson actually went there, and had contact and trade with Native Americans. You see that also done in Vinland Saga, which has some historical accuracy. but just because Vikings had contact with Native Americans, doesn't mean we will start having Native American Vikings, that is not how that works, the Vikings in fact left after they felt Vinland wasn't an inhabitable place to live.
That's what I was thinking and what everyone was taught. As badass as they were they were also basically danish/scandinavian pirates. They're trying to use the fact that they found genetic diversity, but it does not negate the fact that the majority of Vikings were not ethnically diverse. Their genetics and cultural and linguistic identity is mostly of Norse heritage. Not all of them had blonde hair and blue-eyes obviously, but I don't know why people are pretending that they were a mixture of people that look like Manhattan. Were there some tribes that were? maybe. But the burial sites are the exceptions to the rule and not the majority.
The thing that pisses me off about this movie and even the original movies is that the characters are all American. It takes place in Scotland, Scottish people get shit all representation so if they wanna change characters ethnicity and make it "historically accurate" then maybe make the Scottish vikings actually Scottish? Just peeved me as a Scottish person myself.
It’s honestly crazy how they are trying to rewrite history for their own narrative. They tried this same crap with AC shadows and the whole black samurai nonsense. I’m so sick of DEI in film, tv, video games etc. it’ll be interesting to see how things change and what the woke media does now after recent events.
I completely agree with you! I didn't like the idea of having a live action of httyd because the franchise is still fresh in everyone's mind as a wonderful emotional animation. Why did they to do a live action? Did they hate animations? Really, what's the problem with animation? Why they didn't make a movie about Stoick and how the dragons become such a danger to them? Or better, why they didn't take some characters from the serie race to the edge? Like Dagur and Heather, or the other clans? It would be amazing and would make the universe even bigger, but noooo, let's make a live action to compete with Disney.
4:22 that girl is a literally a perfect example for her to play as Astrid Hollywood really need to do better looking for look-alike people for the character or at least turn them into them
@@kaijuzilla2357 XD just thinking "have you seen some cosplay nowadays? They go crazy good with those." and most are all on a budget or hand done with probably only $100 worth of material. Then you look at these hollywood versions and it's like it was bought at spirit holloween.
I recall a line in the original movie that Hiccup said "In a place like this, anyone would have left, but not us, We're Vikings, we have Stubbornness issues". There were two kinds of vikings, the Norse pirates that moved out of their lands plundering and pillaging to find greener pastures, and the Stay-at-home vikings those who stayed behind living simple lives making due with what they have. From that line Hiccup said, it's safe to say the Berkians are the latter. They didn't go out as much or "MIX" with people as much. It took TWO and a Half MOVIES and AT LEAST TWO SERIES before they decided to move after the threat of Grimmel from The Hidden World. Maybe he is going some more things about this movie in regards to that, but honestly I hope he is cohesive with his worldbuilding because the audience is going to see right through it.
Not sure if your comment about two types of Vikings is about the movie or real life, but in real life there were by definition only Vikings who went on raids, as the word 'viking' was just the Nordic word for pirate, it was a profession, not an ethnicity.
I've seen the entire franchise. Movies, short holiday films, and tv shows. I think I'm the only one who's gonna say this but I never liked Dean's writing skills in Riders and Defenders of Berk. It was boring, except for a few choice moments in episodes, but overall, pretty bland. I didn't like the logic of the 2nd movie either. The only way for them to save everyone from Drago was to get Toothless back by letting Hiccup (who was nearly blasted to death but saved by his now dead dad) to talk to him again. The 3rd movie is worse, but I'm not going into that now. I love HTTYD but not when Dean is writing the script.
As a mixed woman (black American/Caucasian) this thing with blackwashing characters is so f'ing annoying. If black characters can portray original white skinned characters, then the other way around should be fair too. But people will scream racism, and say "ItS DifFerEnT ThO". People don't want to be treated or seen as equal, they want to be treated superior. They are above all the rules that they made themselves for others, above all sense and logic that a commoner would have, above questioning and incapable of bigotry. They want the innocence of being a victim while also having the strength to be superior. Its absolutely embarrassing and shameful. Which is ironic, since most of the hate and racism I've received in my life were from other black people. This movie isnt looking good, and it sucks because I was hoping it would be a decent re-imagining with a slightly altered story. A more mature, grittier version. But oh well, people will see it anyway and we'll keep getting more of them.
You as a mixed woman should know that Nico Parker is not a Black woman. When you get with a white man and have a kid with him, your child will be white just like Nico Parker is. Lol and “the most hate I received where from Black People” as if there aren’t White folks referring to women like you as mulatto rats and every other slurs. Kinda funny considering Mixed are considered the beauty standard in Black spaces and placed on a pedestal stone and given more acting opportunities made for fully Black women. I mean women Zendaya all made their career taking roles form fully Black women.
You as a mixed woman should know what Nico is not Biracial like you or Black. Shes a white woman with a white dad and biracial mom. So doesn’t look Black so not sure why you keep pushing that. Also Black People being racist to you as if mixed women are not the beauty standard in Black spaces and the main ones taking acting roles from Black Women. Take Zendaya and Amanda Strindberg for example. You act like White dolls aren’t racist towards mixed historical and even today calling you slurs that starts with M and ends with latto. Get out of here throwing Black folks under the bus to appease with racists.
@@joshuacr they will never be financially ruined.. people are acting like this stuff is going to hurt them greatly and impact them in a big way but this movie is still going to make a fuck ton of money wether you like how it portrays httyd or not.. maybe this is why Hollywood has so many issues, the bad parts of it are not punished.
@Kyjack1556 actually, the last several movies didn't. Including The Little Mermaid remake. Changing the characters look like this is just obviously intentional and there is no reason. They act like it's impossible to not change something...

@DracoPlaysYT It happened, always received hatred. Nowadays they don't dare do it cuz that means they would receive death threats for sure and way more bad stuff happening to them
As a European, I hate their arguments. It might not be 1:1 historical fiction but fantasy properties very clearly set in a culture DOES influences what outsiders think of that culture's history. Vikings raided and traded with plenty of cultures, but not sub-saharan Africa and neither does them engaging with other cultures mean they married them and started a family with them. Respect our history, especially when we know they wouldn't pull this shit with non-European cultures. It's offensive.
I was going to the comments to say this same thing. I am not a European, but any one who does any significant research on "vikings" know that they didn't really mix that far or wide, definitely not into Sub-Saharan Africa. In fact, beyond the Mediterranean there was almost no mixing at all with very few exceptions.
Ya keeping order fans with the 15 year history but also bringing in kids of those same families to have bonding moments of or they age up older characters for the same bonding experience
How would they recycle old assets with a texture pack update though? Its cheaper to use real people than it is to mocap and animate, just put em in costume and save the budget from having to hire mocap and voice actors while lessening the load on the animators.
I do agree with you on your points, especially with the hair. I really don't think many people would have a problem if the movie makers just decided to give the actress a good looking wig or dye her hair. I mean, doesn't Hollywood have great make up artists that can do the job?

I knew they would do this to Astrid. For some reason, Hollywood seems to have a weird fixation on race-swapping female characters. They did it to MJ, Ariel, April O’Neill, Annabeth Chase, and now Astrid. At this point, she may as well not even be called Astrid. Wouldn’t be an issue if she was a different character entirely.
Nico Parker is a white woman with curly hair so I’m not sure why it’s called race swapping? And Ariel is a fish anyone can play her. April was originally Black in the old comics. Do your research before spilling racist WS talking points.
@@Joivviey You haven’t refuted anything I said. Nico is not white, she is biracial. Ariel may have been a mermaid but she was also white in the original film so my point still stands. April was not originally black in the comics; she was a white woman with a perm. And if you’re gonna accuse me, an African-American gay guy of being racist, perhaps YOU should do your research and not make foregone conclusions about people on the internet. You do not know me. Never speak as if you do.
I like your candid commentary on this a lot of people are too afraid to even touch the subject in the way that you have and are attaching some extra analysis that’s just doing too much. Great video!
Fun Fact: People also complained that Fishlegs is no longer blonde, but no is out there making articles saying why it's ok that he's not blonde Second Fun Fact: Voice acting is different from live acting. People are hired for their voices, thus do not need to look like their character and why it doesn't bother people.
100% agree on the second fact. Idc if a black guy voices a white characters. If his voice fits and he can do the job people will not care. Also i assume people argue less about fishlegs because its a less popular character. Clearly doesnt mean it should be okay to have him not be blond when thats how he was depicted but at least that also means less articles trying to argue about this. Plus i assume the actor might be european so they cant pull the race card
Voice acting is great because the only thing that matters is your voice. It doesn’t matter what your sex is or your race. All that matters is that you can voice the character properly
@@someone-qc4dkHalle Bailey as Ariel still makes me wonder how any person with red hair that actually looked like her, who had a dream of playing her must have felt. They could’ve done the original character justice, due to how close she looks and portrays the character. But no, all for the sake of *representation*, the writers of the remake did something that one one would have thought to do to tiana.
@@barneyerror4561 I understand your view, but to be as unbiased as possible, Ariel's story didn't revolve around her skin colour like Tiana's, hence why it's sort of understandable that they casted Halle Bailey. At least they managed to make her look similar to the original's. Astrid on the other hand, it's a situation that is CLEARLY avoidable. Nico Parker is actually a great choice for Astrid IMO, but it's the costuming that pisses me off. For some reason, the blonde characters aren't blonde at all, either becoming brunettes or gingers. They don't even bother to keep their original colour palettes for their clothing either. If the characters aren't going to share a similar physical trait from the original besides their names, they are basically not the same characters anymore. I can only hope that their personalities aren't butchered like their designs now...
It's not that there weren't mixed-race vikings, and if they wanted to have those in the movie, they could have. The problem is that astrid is white and blonde, and the actress playing at her is not.
That's even easy to do since it's not Black Panther's ethnicity that makes him a super hero, but the juice of some plant. So anybody can drink and gain his abilities lol
I laughed so hard with this. Oh man! Might as well, There are white Africans. That's how they are going to shut me up. If they put the Black Panther suit to a white man. I'll shut up and just accept it.
You are missing the point, it's the not the fact that there are or aren't white Africans but the fact that black panther is originally depicted as a black African man but in his first cinematic appearance he's played by a white actor, use your brains guys
Um, issue is it’s mainly the white female leads being black washed, but you definitely don’t see that with white male leads to include live action Little Mermaid 🙄
Hollywood seems to hate blonde haired, blue eyed girls/women these days and its ticking me off. Astrid was a character I looked up too growing up. I had a phase where I wore my (very BLONDE) hair exactly like hers and felt strong for it. They did it to Anabeth from Percy Jackson, too. Anabeth and Astrid are two girls/women that I wanted to be like. They were some of my biggest inspirations and admirations growing up. They were my role models. And yeah, they're fictional. But who cares?? They're characters that make little girls be excited about who they are, to be happy in their own skin and own who they are. They exibit great qualities, morals, and values. Why would you change that?? There's a war on blonde haired girls and Hollywood is the one who instigated. And red heads! Justice for the red heads too!! If you want more representation, create original works that focus on those groups. And/or take inspiration from the stories, myths, and experiences from the people in the groups. Stop trying to modify beloved characters to fit the system. It's insulting to both parties!
They don’t make original stories about us because they’re not gonna sell, and this is coming from a black woman. Can you name a single black fantasy that’s going to be as popular as Game of Thrones or HTTYD or PJO? Books like Legendborn, Children of Blood and Bone, etc. take forever to get recognize on screen, if they ever will at all, because not enough people outside of our minority read them and actually care about them. And when films do try to tell stories with black leads, like Wish for example, they half try or it bombs. It’s not that we don’t try to make our own stories, it’s that they don’t get picked up much outside of our community. I never hear anyone talk about books that I love and represent me. And then there’s also that group that likes to sit around saying black fantasy is inaccurate because we wouldn’t have been able to do certain things that ruin the chances of books too. Whether y’all like it or not, white people are the majority, and Hollywood only cares about dollar signs so the only diversity we’re going to get in films like this is by them fitting us in in stories that don’t revolve around us. Things will likely stay that way for a while because most people don’t care about it otherwise. Is it fair? No, absolutely not, but the “create your own stories” argument is null. We have, and we have been trying, and it just doesn’t work out.

If any movie needs live action I think movie likes Disney Hercules, Treasure planet, Atlantis, The Hutchback of notre dame, & The iron giant as prime examples granted I know most I named are Disney movies but I genuinely believe those movies could be great and heck Disney is already making most of their classics into live action minus well.
@Donovan_oryx924 Yo we have the same name but spelled differently yeah I know they working on Hercules but it’s taking mad forever which I understand because you want to get it right. Also yeah I do know The Iron giant is not Disney but that’s another example of a animated movie that I would be okay with getting a live action treatment.
@@toongrowner1 Yeah but Hollywood tends to not have original ideas sometimes so they look at what could draw money so that why Animated movies turn into live action movies. I’m not against animated movies turning into live action movies it just ultimately depends on what movie it is like for example the lion king shouldn’t had a live action movie but a movie like for example The jungle book I was personally okay with so I personally didn’t mind.
People seem to not understand that white people are not just white. That as long as one is white it’s fine. We have blonde, brunettes, red hair, black. Nico chould be 100% white but she’s brunette and Astrid is blonde so she whould need a wig. It’s just that simple. I am blonde I can’t be for example Belle if I don’t put on a wig ATLEAST. I though characters was supose to look like characters. Atleast when we already know what they look like.
Their thoughts are probably like "we love diversity, we just hate diversity in white people and can't fathom anyone who isn't brown haired". It's funny because Nico is a great actress and a beautiful girl, but what does it cost for them to actually make her look like Astrid and maybe put a blond wig on her if they don't wanna dye her hair? They just love to piss people off and create controversies. The saddest thing is that the actors are the first victims of their bs.
"What does it matter!!!???" they screech as they insidiously corrupt whatever they touch. If they care. It matters. You must deny them whatever they desire no matter how small. Because it matters to THEM.
They ask why does it matter yet it mattered enough to them to change it. They always try that kind of questioning to distract and shut up people when they're doing what no one wants.
Why does it matter if they are not real? Well these clowns have done this to real women to like Anne Boleyn, so how do you justify that. This was not done to show creativity and uniqueness, but rather ideological politics which hopefully will soon fade away.
Now I haven't seen these series of shows but it was pointed out to me that on one of the Vikings shows they race & gender swapped one of their historical characters.
I disagree with everything you just said I think it's becoming a point where people are going to have to stop using identity politics as an excuse for some things they don't like why does everything have to be a woke issue don't you think this is getting tired some already besides there is no hard evidence that this has anything to do with identity politics I think pretty soon people are going to stop caring about what certain people think anymore especially if they keep complaining about identity politics as far as some people are concerned they're no different than the woke people
Fun fact: people DID complain about hugh jackman being Wolverine - he was too tall. But he nailed the part and now people love him. Edit: I’m just pointing out that people did complain, but he looked enough like the character and did a good enough job that people overlook the height. I’m of the opinion that if it is a visual to visual or if the character has a description in the book, you should do the best to match the look. So yes, Astrid should be blond and same goes for ruffnut and tuffnut.
True. He also LOOKED like Wolverine, although taller than in the comics. Put a blonde guy in the same spot, even if he nails the role, much less likely to have it be a commercial success. Is it going to ruin the movie? No. Is it necessary to make this choice and start off with a divided audience? Also no. Better to play it safe and adapt the humans as faithfully as they're adapting the dragons if they're going to go for such a lame cash-grab as this.
Second, beyond editting/camera angles you can change height. Wigs, contacts, makeup and wardrobe are completely doable. Those can adjust an actor to resemble what's expected.
@@Halfkin Perfect example: LOTR and The Hobbit hobbits and dwarves compared to everyone else. Lots of drastic camera angle play and actors sitting on their knees and post-shot editing. There's a whole documentary on that alone
At this point can we say that they are discriminating against blond people like why did they remove every blond character in the series and all of them are main character
THANK you for continuing to talk about this situation. I'm against race / ethinicity changing ANY characters from any story. I would be LIVID if they changed Miles Morales from being latino black into being white or asian, as he's one of my favourite super heroes ever and so much of his character comes from his upbringing of his father and mother's cultures. But of course they are fine with changing our blonde viking girl into a half African descent person?? I related to Astrid so much as a kid, being a blonde tomboy growing up who wasn't into girly things. How would they like it if a black character they related to heavily as a child was changed into a blonde chick for a live action?? HOW is this okay?? It's wrong and it needs to stop. Why is it only ever okay when it's done to white characters turning them black? But if the reverse happened, people would be outraged. It's simply racism to be okay with one but not the other. NEITHER are okay.
I think Hollywood sometimes has something against blonde people. I have nothing against Nico Parker or any black people, in fact I’m black myself. But you notice they always make the blonde haired blue eye characters black in adaptations. They did the same thing with Sarah and Maria in the last of us show. And they do it a lot with superhero adaptations. I don’t know what’s up with that but there’s definitely a pattern here.
Of course they do, have you forgotten what Funny Mustache guy said was the "master race" Blonde Hair Blue Eyes" they want to distance themselves as far as possible from those principles. Its understandable
@@erika_itsumi5141 That's a myth.. It was the Germanic people.. Blonde and blue eyes was seen as the peak of beauty. They weren't trying to manufacture those traits.. They did beat the entire world twice so the "superior" stuff was pretty spot on.

You as a “Black person” should know that Nico Parker is not a Black Woman. She is literally white and she’s perfect casting for Astrid. Just give her blonde hair and blue eyes and she’s good. Also you act like Black folks have control over the movie industry as if we demand for characters to be Black we never asked for Ariel or the other characters to be Black. We just want original Black stories and characters but the people in charge of Hollywood rather make race-swap characters and cause chaos- mostly at the expense of us Black folks since have to deal with the amount of racist comments and backlash on us.
They're the racist ones, however, because SOME white people were racist in the past, they mask their anger with that. Because, its interesting to note that cultures all over the world, not asians so much, but most everyone else, takes slaves and treats people of different colors differently. But here in the U.S. where free speech is allowed, the Leftists have taken control and are trying to create disunity by calling white people racist and then backing it up with the american slave trade. Which, im not defending, it was a bad thing, but, not all white people have to suffer because of what our ancestors did. No one is calling the Egyptians racist for having jews as slaves thousands of years ago, for instance. Thank god trump was elected and is coming back to fix the political swamp that is the U.S.
This movie literally could've been a live action sequel that follows Hiccup and Astrid's son and daughter as they go on some adventure with Toothless!!!
Or they could've just left it in animation. There's no legitimate reason why everything has to be "remade" as live-action. Animation is a legitimate art-form in its own right; there's no reason it has to be erased & superseded, as if it's some sort of embarrassment to "legitimate" filmmaking.
thats worse, because if they make another animated film and it's bad, it will tarnish the reputation of the original trilogy as it had such a perfect ending already, a live action is way less of a risk since it's a remake that is not a direct sequel, if it sucks, the originals still exists, if its good, then I guess the originals still exist either way

Why I like about this whole thing is that no one’s going after the actress (to my knowledge) she’s just going after a job and got it. We’re all angry at the writers and producers.
At this point, there’s got to be some kind of hard rule in Hollywood that if you don’t have a female POC character (preferably Black) in your movie (with a major speaking role and screen time), your movie doesn’t get made, PERIOD. This same nonsense keeps happening over and over again with franchise after franchise.
This does happen. Look at screenwriter blogs and pages. If you don't "push the message" your project isn't getting made. If it's a GREAT idea, they will buy the IP and alter it to assuage the woke.
They don't need to change the actress all they need to do is change her hair. Make her blonde to match the character. If she's the best actress for the job great! Now make her the character she's supposed to be acting as.
And the beliefs of the people forming the pattern of events. It always seems to be a certain ideological bent with *certain* beliefs on...a lot of things.
They won’t do that because they think animation isn’t real media. They belittle and bully animation and animators because they believe it’s a cute hobby for kids. That’s why they refuse to touch animation and treat animators as nothing.

First Hollywood came for the redheads, now Hollywood is coming for the blondes.

I think the argument is that complaining about it is harmful because black representation is too important. People getting mad over hair and eye color is fine because that doesn't involve the representation of a minority.

Gaslighting fans.. that always gets people in the mood to go see your film. 🤣😂

What about the mountain of ginger characters that have been changed to black? Do little ginger kids not deserve to "see themselves" in media? These race swaps only ever go one way.
Look at yourselves your getting upset over fictional characters and you dont even realize it or you do and still make a big deal out of nothing 🤣
@@kirby21-xz4rx least obvious bot comment
People forget that gingers have faced a lot of prejudice and oppression. In medieval Europe, they were accused of witchcraft, especially if they were women. In the 19th century, gingers were accused of being promiscuous (especially the women). In ancient Greece and Rome, red headed slaves were fetishized and fetched higher prices (especially...eh, you get it).
I think people tend to overlook this because most gingers are white. But its small wonder they are the ones who are more likely race swapped with black characters because gingers are a minority, so its only natural we swap them with a different minority!
@@kirby21-xz4rx proving the point
ok i get your point, but blondes are so common in mainstream media especially blonde women.
@@heehee845 this. THIS!!! So frustrating, it’s like they have to make the love interest look typical and not embrace the more unique features

And I thought that the Spiderverse had softened this type of people, but not even that
THIS! They always complain about people "appropriating" black culture but turn around and to it to other cultures. It's so annoying. Like just leave the movies and books alone if the "lack of represention" bothers you so much or whatever.
It specifically keeps happening to teenage female co-leads. If i had a nickle...

They actually race swap lots of male red heads and blondes, its just people don't notice as much.
Wait you're on to something cuz this happened with the little mermaid too
You see they keep doing this to female leads and co-leads because they want to indoctrinate young women and girls into their ideology and thus they target that demographic more than most others.
yes, first it was Ariel, and then Annabeth from Percy Jackson, and now Astrid. 😭
She also race swap another blonde character from the last of us. Hollywood is not just pushing out gingers, but their also pushing out blondes.
I may be venturing into conspiracy theorists territory, but I wonder if that's being done because a certain president-elect does seem to show a preference for blondes?

"Gaslighting" perfectly sums up everything about the live-action, thank you! Like they clearly didn't bother to cast people who look the part with some few exceptions cause Gerald Butler is just perfect for the part providing authenticity, this trailer even feels like it's tapping into people's nostalgia of the og movie and it just misses the point with things like this crucial scene of Hiccup trying to kill Toothless, they just didn't get the atmosphere and tone right, this moment is supposed to have tention and be very serious, and the live action just didn't get this tone with the expressions being really out of place, this scene in live action gives me the vibe "oh are you really going to kill this cute innocent animal?" meanwhile Toothless in the og movie atp was supposed to be a wild animal who wasn't tamed and feared Hiccup and thus we get the famous line of Hiccup "I wouldn't kill him because he looked as frightened as I was"
So, when Disney makes a live-action Princess and the Frog, cast a Chinese man as Tiana. I mean, if he's good at it.
"We're crafting a fantasy, not a historical fact."
Worldbuilding 101 is that if you can't maintain believable consistency, you lose the audience's willingness to suspend their disbelief. Therefore your craftmanship is shoddy garbage and belongs in a bargain bin.
they said the opposite when they "crafted" cleopatra
As a black woman…. CAN THEY PLEASE STOP BLACKWASHING MY FAVORITE WHITE CHARACTERS?! Astrid was strikingly beautiful in the movies and her platinum blonde hair in the last one was breathtaking. DEI needs to die and give us our characters back. They would get triggered if Tiana from princess and the frog was white or Asian instead of black, and they know that!
Also girl pop off at the end😂
She is clearly white so how is this race swapping?
No but Disney's Princess and the Frog was also completely changed to be its own version 😂 but they did it kinda tastefully (like change almost everything except the concept of the cursed frog prince and maiden's kiss) so people liked it as it was... But afterwards.. these people do sloppier jobs with time and we simply can notice it almost immediately.

ive noticed a pattern that of all the characters they choose to race swap in movies its almost ALWAYS the protagonist's love-interest.
Really
That's the goal.
⚪️ couples are a threat
Or the gay best friend lol
Everyone talks about Astrid but nobody talks about how the rest of the cast don't look anywhere near to the original characters. 1:22 that actually looks good so like yeah why not!!
People call it representation but it’s not
If you want representation make it! Come up with new stories, new shows, new movies. Recreating things that have already existed but changing a characters race is not good representation, it helps nothing, it doesn’t give you anything or add anything
And also it’s only ever making characters black, where’s the other races?
You see that also done in Vinland Saga, which has some historical accuracy. but just because Vikings had contact with Native Americans, doesn't mean we will start having Native American Vikings, that is not how that works,
the Vikings in fact left after they felt Vinland wasn't an inhabitable place to live.
This is so spot on. Just because one group made contact with another, it doesn't mean they settled down and have baby's with each other.

Not sure if your comment about two types of Vikings is about the movie or real life, but in real life there were by definition only Vikings who went on raids, as the word 'viking' was just the Nordic word for pirate, it was a profession, not an ethnicity.

@vpoof7804 Yeah I don't want to be hypocritical but I want to see what would happen if they race swapped someone TO white instead.
Hiccup and Astrid's children, as teens, fly to a new land with different people. BAM new cartoon.
Ya keeping order fans with the 15 year history but also bringing in kids of those same families to have bonding moments of or they age up older characters for the same bonding experience
That'd require effort and a new overall product. They fail on those every time because they're talentless hacks.
How would they recycle old assets with a texture pack update though? Its cheaper to use real people than it is to mocap and animate, just put em in costume and save the budget from having to hire mocap and voice actors while lessening the load on the animators.
But remember the boy has blonde hair we can’t have blonde hair apparently

Absolutely. They’re obsessed with race swapping the female lead/love interest.
Nico Parker is a white woman with curly hair so I’m not sure why it’s called race swapping? And Ariel is a fish anyone can play her. April was originally Black in the old comics. Do your research before spilling racist WS talking points.

Second Fun Fact:
Voice acting is different from live acting. People are hired for their voices, thus do not need to look like their character and why it doesn't bother people.
Ikr the media is just trying to blame this on raysism
100% agree on the second fact. Idc if a black guy voices a white characters. If his voice fits and he can do the job people will not care.
Also i assume people argue less about fishlegs because its a less popular character. Clearly doesnt mean it should be okay to have him not be blond when thats how he was depicted but at least that also means less articles trying to argue about this. Plus i assume the actor might be european so they cant pull the race card
I mean if a white guy voices it's a black character it should be okay as well.
Voice acting is great because the only thing that matters is your voice. It doesn’t matter what your sex is or your race. All that matters is that you can voice the character properly
This is sad.

It's not that there weren't mixed-race vikings, and if they wanted to have those in the movie, they could have. The problem is that astrid is white and blonde, and the actress playing at her is not.
It's like casting a white guy as black panther and you can use the fantasy shield as well

I'm still waiting for our "Anastasi" myth by hollyweird with Kelswy Grammer as thw titular character. Lol
Yep! But don’t worry they will keep Spider Gwen ⚪️ since her love interest is not ⚪️.

@@Sylmarys24 not saying that nico parker was the right choice (I haven’t seen the movie yet ofc so I can’t say for certain) but there’s a lot more to acting than just the looks. She might look like her but can she act like her?
I love how passionate you're getting with this one, I can tell you loved the trilogy! Its my favorite animation of all time! I love my cat and it always reminds me of the cat i had at the time back then.
The blonde hair makes her stand out from the others, with dark brown hair, she just blends in with the background and everyone's clothes. Same with the twins hair. You don't want your characters to mesh with the environment, it's boring to watch.
Blonde hair is a European trait and Jews don't like that. The entire point of the EU being formed by them was to erased cultural identity for white people.
It’s also funny to me, Nico Parker is a nepo baby. Her parents both have their hand in Hollywood and I’m sure that played a part in casting. Which is ironic because Astrid hated Hiccup for getting away with things because of nepotism
