I think you're on to something. A post-apocalyptic retelling of Robin Hood. Robin uses a bow because the gangster lords don't allow anyone but their militia to use the firearms that are left over from the nuclear war 200 years ago. The new nobles abuse their power and force the struggling remains of civilization to pay their exorbitant "protection" fees. Maybe they had a just leader, but he went off into the wastes to rescue a struggling group of survivors, leaving his corrupt brother in charge until his return. Still loyal to the old leader, Robin turns to criminal acts to try and fight against the brother. Sort of a Robin Hood meets Mad Max.
He is clearly a racist...In his show and in real life he is targeting and attacking white people... And he faces the obvious backlash calling others racists... Who didn't see that coming?
I love how they whine about how poor they are and how they can barely afford to live in this "dump"... while sitting in a big, beautiful and richly attired appartment, many people couldn't even dream of having. And apparently the mother can afford this all, completely on her own with just a single job, that still leaves her with enough free time to be an activist as well? I've been noticing that too. These stories are written by people who have no idea what they're talking about, nor the skills to research it. They either grew up in some suburban area where they only saw the "ghetto" on tv, or were so far removed from any reality that comes with this kind of life they have nothing to go on. You can tell when people are portraying a genuine experience because it's not contradictory like most of this stuff is. We have people with understanding parents who live in a nice house, don't seem to have any financial worries yammering on like they're one paycheck away from poverty with two households to choose from. These people have zero idea what no, or sht, options look like. They have no idea what desperation of this type is, and for a story like Robin Hood, you need to understand that much.

Thing is, Robin Hood was a noble himself. He knew the corruption and abuse the rich elites did to the people and so he chose to do something about it himself despite essentially being one of them.
Not to mention he and the Merry Men focused on the corrupt. My favorite Robin Hood story was of a knight debt trapped by a local bishop (the money was to ransom his son). Robin and company initially planned to rob him when they saw him, but hearing his story made them immediately change gears and help him. And heck, even the corrupt folks they robbed sometimes had changes of heart after being treated well by Robin.

Like I alluded to, Robin Hood would kidnapped people (i.e. rich, corrupt, nobles) take them to one of their camps, through them a feast with entertainment, and then takepart of their wealth as "payment". I believe one version of the tales I read had them divide the wealth into thirds. One third would be kept by Robin and company, another third would be distributed to the poor and various charities, and the final third would be returned to the victim. A bit more nuanced than just rob rich people, which is what this abomination boils down to.

The reason that Prince John was constantly taxing everyone wasn't because of his own greed, but because that money was needed to finance the various wars that Richard fought. Richard also had a nasty habit of getting himself captured by his enemies who would demanded large sums of money for him to be released. One such ransom I read about amounted to over a billion dollars, and considering inflation since my teenage years when I was obsessed with reading everything I could about the medieval world, I'd say it's an even greater sum.
What’s more ironic is the “bad guy” has more morals than any other character of in the entire show. Like in real life, he would be reasonable and a “good guy”

I think it's funny how the writers made a black character who's entire role in the story is to be a criminal and uses the title of "hood" then accuses the audience of being racist for not watching the show.

Its like Christians insisting other Christians watch crappy Christian films because it supports their values. That's okay if that's what you want to watch. I want to watch a good story that compels me to keep watching.

The thing with the sticks is in the original story, when Robin and John met they met on opposite sides of a stream, with a fallen tree acting as a bridge that wasn’t only wide enough for 1 person, because they both had staffs with them, they fought (and yes, that is roughly how staff fighting looks) for the right to cross the bridge first. Personally I'm really tired with just the trope of the main character being morally ambiguous or a "do whatever" kinda person. I miss when there was actually good people being main characters. Not someone who I need to come up with some kind of defense to justify them and what they do.

Robin is appealing as a character because of the fact that he represents a force of justice, taking some of the exorbitant excess the owning class has accumulated by sitting on their asses all day making people pay for the necessities of life like food and shelter, and giving it back to the exploited working class. Not just a guy stealing stuff because he can. Those kinds of characters are fun, but have a completely different kind of appeal than a Robin Hood. The fact that the writers for this show missed that is genuinely impressive.
Emotionally manipulative/abusive mothers are not an uncommon thing, especially toward daughters. I speak from experience. I don't know if the show is trying to highlight the mom's toxic behaviors or if it's trying to portray her as a well meaning helicopter parent.
The mother is portrayed as a "friend" to her daughter... by enabling the daughter to be slutty and worse. Also, it's an issue in modern black culture that black women will raise daughters to be lifelong friends/dependents instead of adults.
One major thing I would fix about this show (and many other things) is Robyn’s backstory. Rather than a black girl growing up in the projects, have her as the daughter of a successful black businessman/woman. She goes to private schools, has tutors, can afford nice things, etc. Then have her parent(s) lose their jobs because of their companies CEO deciding to downsize and close the office they work in, while simultaneously revealing the company to have had a record year of profit and the CEO’s living an extravagant life while their employees suffer. So Robyn decides to fight the CEO and gets together a group of misfits to air the company’s dirty laundry and ‘rob’ them of their customers, all to the disapproval of her parents who just want to move on. What do you think?
If the parents are all that successful being downsized would likely have been bundled with a lovely compensation package along with a hiring bonus from whatever company successfully courted them. Robyn's revenge spree would likely embarrass them more than anything else. It doesn't seem the best setup.
If they had made the first episode feature things like , say Robyn and her Mom having their own little bakery or something, trying to make things works. Watch them both having second jobs in the evening just to make ends meet while living in a rundown apartment. They are just scraping by, but one day, one day their own bakery will take off. That's their sparkle of hope. And then Evil Prince John comes in, obviously having bribed city council or the bank (and damned well show this in a scene) or whatever and closes down their bakery so he can build stuff. Then maybe I could have rooted for her. Instead...we don't see mom working at all, just busy tresspessing cause she can't just protest outside of the building where it would be ok. Robyn delivers a grand total of 1 package. The rest of the time they seem busy with having sex I guess cause of refilling the condom jar remark, painting signs, more tresspassing with friends to make rap videos....while their apartment complex looks pretty fine to me. Heck, even has a gym!
It's funny how you can find many better ideas for the scenario and characterisations in the comment section, than what the actual director came up with. From people who have a better understanding of the issues themselves, as well as the actual legend of Robin Hood and its message.
If you went with the bakery idea, then John could have been a gang leader, with the sheriff as an enforcer and they could be extorting local people and businesses for 'protection' money
With Robin Hood, especially the ones that tie in the Crusades, you also have the setting where the overall person in charge is not the true ruler. It's Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham who are getting greedy while John is acting under the aegis of his brother who is away at war in the Crusades. Robin is sent home for whatever reason, normally one where he was captured and was released, partially, on agreement to not participate in the war as part of his parole to find out that the Prince and his buddies have been raiding to coffers and bleeding the peasants and others illegally. It's why King Richard's return is a major thing in a LOT of tellings of the story. It's a lot of corrupt bureaucrats who illegitimately stole power that Robin is fighting against. One of the major things with Robin Hood is that he's also an example of what a true noble ought to be in things, when the government turns on the people their job is supposed to be fighting it as well. And in several versions of the story, Robin is the descendant of one of Arthur's knights or Arthur himself. This show, however is a group of thugs out to be thugs
Hopefully someone reads this long rant, *warning* I live about 30 minutes from Sherwood forest, and my family have lived in this area for generations, so Robin Hood is a part of cultural heritage for me. What everyone fails to understand about the Ballad of Robin Hood is that it isn't about "taking from the rich to give to the poor", the story is a reminder to those who hold power what their duty is to the men and women who serve them. An example of what i mean is when Robin and his men kidnap and rob the Bishop, they tie him to a tree and he assumes they're either going to kill or torture him, instead Robin unties him and asks him to perform mass for him and his men, to remind the Bishop that his purpose and role should be first and foremost to bring religion to common folk and nobility, not to collect and horde tax money that is used for corruption. I wrote this before i watched this video, glad our fox girl thing picked up the moral of the story 😊

The Sherriff vehicles are very American (don't know how they are in Canada, but definitely not British). And when "Little John" shows up he's wearing an American Army uniform (Canadians have a different pattern and Brits have a different pocket arrangement). We already have a modern day Robin Hood and it's Green Arrow. Oliver Queen is the perfect modern interpretation of Robin Hood, he fights crime with a bow and arrow.He fights for the people against the corrupt elitist system. Oliver is also a more interesting, complex and charismatic character because of his evolution from spoiled rich playboy to hero. If you want to do a modern day Robin Hood esc teen drama fine. But at least try to be more original or creative with the concept. And maybe try being more subtle with the messaging.
So funnily enough to, the reason you probably thought of the “Bear Necessities”, is because the animations from the Jungle Book, were reused in Robin Hood for the animation of Little John. There are a few circumstances that this occurred.
Trivia: sheriffs in Canada aren't at all like they are in the US. For the most part they do courtroom stuff, like security and prisoner transport. Some provinces do have them performing limited law enforcement, but even then: a sheriff isn't a rank. A sheriff isn't the head of the local police organisation. He or she is just another peace officer.

Well, most people active on the internet are in their late 20s or younger (many are under 18). So it's quite understandable they likely saw the Disney version first, which itself was already considered an old movie when I was a child. It is likely that many of us never had a chance to watch the older version.

With the “Director X” thing My guess is that he was trying to do what the likes of Malcom X and his companions did - who changed their previous surnames to “X” so that they wouldn’t have the surnames given by those who enslaved their ancestors. A correction of sorts. Robin Hood is a legend that may or may not have some loose basis in reality, like King Arthur, we will never really know what actual inspiration it had if any, just theories. A lot of the popular version of the story comes from an oral tradition that became somewhat formanized combined with the usage of the character in a novel from 1819 called "Ivanhoe" which takes place in the same time period (also being fantasy) and uses Robin Hood under the name of "Locksley" as a supporting character. A lot of his current characterization and even look comes from how he was presented in that as initial printings had illustrations. It is important to note that anyone who thinks Robin Hood was a criminal or anti-government or anything somehow missed the point, or saw the stories too young to really understand the concept. The idea is basically that King Richard the Lionheart was captured during The Crusades (something like this really happened), a noble who fought in the Crusades, Robin Of Locksley, returns home to find that due to the religious and political alliances that allowed the powers of the time to unify, "Prince John" has taken over England due to blood ties to King Richard, though this happened due to political alliances with France to whom he was primarily loyal, and well France and England have some nasty history "The Hundred Years War" and all of that. This is why you have the whole thing of Normans (a reference to the city of Normandy where French power was centralized at the time) oppressing the Saxons. Prince John being pretty much French has used him being the highest ranking royal they can find to take over England and start taxing the crap out of the people for not only his own enrichment, but also to send back home to France. So you pretty much have the imagery of England paying taxes to a hated foreign power due to blood ties and politics. You can sort of guess how that pissed people off. At any rate, this was from a time period where things like knights and nobles were not seen as being bad. In fact calling someone "noble" or having "noble traits" still has positive associations going back to this time. While of course things didn't stay that way, understand that originally nobles did take decent care of their people in a sort of symbiotic relationship before what we all know historically happened. Robin Hood is a throw back to the time period where it was not considered somehow offensive to think a literal "White Knight" was going to come charging out to protect his people from bandits or whatever as nobles actually did that sort of thing once upon a time. At any rate in this context Robin is a good ruler, and the rightful lord of those lands. He tells Prince John he can fuck right off with what he's doing, so Prince John declares him an outlaw even if this is technically all Robin's land in the name of the missing king. Robin is supposed to be the one who collects the taxes based on what's reasonable, and then give a portion of that to King Richard, and in the context of the story since he was well liked before he had to leave for the crusades, we can presume he was reasonable about it. From there as we know the details vary, but Prince John fails to kill Robin, and Robin goes and rounds up a bunch of militia as "bandits" who start robbing the tax collectors lead by the local Sheriff, and murdering the crap out of any French soldiers or Knights Prince John sends after him from his foreign alliances, as using foreign troops was a big part of how he was supposed to have seized power. The story ends where Robin keeps this going long enough for King Richard The Lionheart to return from The Crusades, and of course then Prince John has no claim to rule since the actual king is back and there is no need for a regent. Given what happened he of course is generally portrayed as simply pardoning Robin Hood, and declaring him the king. In some stories, he dies when Prince John tries to murder King Richard or something, and then unleashes one final arrow over Sherwood from the battlements of his castle, and of course kids around the general region could then look to see if they could find Robin's final arrow for many generations. It's been told in different ways as it's a legend, we can assume if something like this happened, the specifics are probably substantially different, sort of like any reality that might have been behind King Arthur. I doubt many read this (I've written it before to explain it on youtube) but if you read most of the versions you'll notice all of these elements. This is sort of why something like Robyn Hood is genuinely offensive, they miss the point of the story and why it resonated all these years. The thing is Robin Hood was not a criminal... he was simply declared one, he's literally the rightful ruler of those lands, defending his people against incredible odds. It's a story about a guy fighting a foreign invader, and a totally messed up political situation that was hurting people. Also if you must know the reason why Robin Hood uses a longbow is specifically nationalistic symbolism as he's fighting The French. See in verified history in the final major battles between France and England, France seemed to have an overwhelming advantage and pretty much road in with masses of knights, being a group of cocky bastards, and a bunch of British levies with Long Bows mostly just stood back and massacred them all with massed fire as at the time they had never seen anything like that before. If you look up things like "The Battle Of Agincourt" you will find out this is absolutely true, and it turned France from the obvious winner, into a bit of a joke as the literal flower of French Knighthood got turned into pincushions in massive numbers. Thus the Long bow is specifically symbolic of England really messing up the cocky French and turning the tables against them specifically when there should be overwhelming odds in their favor.... pretty much what Robin Hood is doing on a smaller scale you might note. As a result you might get the impression this story is intended to be just a wee bit nationalistic on top of everything.
This comment is historically inaccurate, and misplaces events by hundreds of years. The hundreds Year war didnt take place until 250 years or so after the time of King Richard and King John. There are other glaring issues in yoir comment but i dont have the time or inclination to point them all oit. But they are numerous.
About Robyn's job, she "picked up a few more apps" so she is probably just doing deliveries of various kinds for companies. Or driving an uber or shit like that.
From the perspective of retelling the classic Robin Hood story, it's maybe important to remember that the main character is one of society's elites. Having a privileged education as a ruler and knowledge of the realm beyond the visible area of the story helped justify his actions, because he was able to judge the consequences to society. (You could also argue the specific ways in which society and the local government was messed up helped as well.) Might be able to claim that given the changing forms of education, in the modern age a normal person with enough access to high-quality data and putting in enough research and study to comprehend it could do the job. One of the big problems with taking the story into an urban setting is that you replace the steady stream of travelers who basically disappear from the world like game NPCs once robbed and out of sight with people who will be sticking around, and you replace the forest which could theoretically (albeit not usually in practice) provide all a bandit group needs to survive with an environment entirely dependent on goods flowing in.
What's even worse about the mom willing to risk her life, her kid's lives, the other residents of the building's lives, being able to walk again, and her children having a bright future all for rented buildings; the buildings themselves are not actually wanted. These are project buildings and they were, and are, hated by EVERYONE. They were hell for residents because in actuality they were built to put as many poor people into as possible, meaning the rooms themselves were small, the building was not given actual care when built, it was any actual, professional, self-respecting architect's nightmare. Most, if not all, of these buildings were abandoned because no one wanted to stay, and were hated so much that when the day came that the buildings were blown down, the old residents had a front row seat and CHEERED as the buildings came down. And the director thought they were a good example of housing for people to the point they would risk their lives for less than the minimum. The real residents WISHED this was what the living environment looked like. Why would he think these atrocities were good thing for poor people to want to save?
i dont understand why the american black subculture bled into the Canadian black subculture, they really don't have the same issues with poverty as the ones in the states do, there is no issue with police brutality and nothing even close enough to that of the states to really justify calling racial violence by cops or the like I just find it so very perplexing

When a show runs on average from 43-52 Minutes with no commercials, and Alteroi spends likely more time broadcasting (57 minutes) what a crapfest it is, that truly shows how patheticly this show impacted her. I got nothing else to say she didn't masterly say or crack up better over in that video.

The basic concept of a modern day Robin Hood was already done in the '80s, and actually done well, and that was the A-Team. Even Knight Rider was closer to the concept of modern day Robin Hood who rights wrongs and punishes those who are above the law way better than this.

The show is about thieves helping people and bringing down corrupt people and while also stealing and giving back to those that were harmed by the corrupt. It features a diverse cast and interesting stories that are both fun and moving at times.

I think the john and robyn stick fight is in reference to how Robin and Little John meet in the actual story, Little John and his outlaw gang attempt to force Robin to pay a toll to pass a bridge, then a fight with quarter staffs begin, Robin defeats John but John respects Robin and they become firm friends

The fact that Robin Hood has to actually be explained as not actually stealing from the rich to give to the poor as really meaning to take back what was taken from the poor by the elites and given back so they can survive is what really gets me . I think you're on to something. A post-apocalyptic retelling of Robin Hood. Robin uses a bow because the gangster lords don't allow anyone but their militia to use the firearms that are left over from the nuclear war 200 years ago. The new nobles abuse their power and force the struggling remains of civilization to pay their exorbitant "protection" fees. Maybe they had a just leader, but he went off into the wastes to rescue a struggling group of survivors, leaving his corrupt brother in charge until his return. Still loyal to the old leader, Robin turns to criminal acts to try and fight against the brother. Sort of a Robin Hood meets Mad Max.

I've been noticing that too. These stories are written by people who have no idea what they're talking about, nor the skills to research it. They either grew up in some suburban area where they only saw the "ghetto" on tv, or were so far removed from any reality that comes with this kind of life they have nothing to go on. You can tell when people are portraying a genuine experience because it's not contradictory like most of this stuff is. We have people with understanding parents who live in a nice house, don't seem to have any financial worries yammering on like they're one paycheck away from poverty with two households to choose from. These people have zero idea what no, or sht, options look like. They have no idea what desperation of this type is, and for a story like Robin Hood, you need to understand that much.

Thing is, Robin Hood was a noble himself. He knew the corruption and abuse the rich elites did to the people and so he chose to do something about it himself despite essentially being one of them.
Not to mention he and the Merry Men focused on the corrupt. My favorite Robin Hood story was of a knight debt trapped by a local bishop (the money was to ransom his son). Robin and company initially planned to rob him when they saw him, but hearing his story made them immediately change gears and help him. And heck, even the corrupt folks they robbed sometimes had changes of heart after being treated well by Robin.

Like I alluded to, Robin Hood would kidnapped people (i.e. rich, corrupt, nobles) take them to one of their camps, through them a feast with entertainment, and then takepart of their wealth as "payment". I believe one version of the tales I read had them divide the wealth into thirds. One third would be kept by Robin and company, another third would be distributed to the poor and various charities, and the final third would be returned to the victim. A bit more nuanced than just rob rich people, which is what this abomination boils down to.

The reason that Prince John was constantly taxing everyone wasn't because of his own greed, but because that money was needed to finance the various wars that Richard fought. Richard also had a nasty habit of getting himself captured by his enemies who would demanded large sums of money for him to be released. One such ransom I read about amounted to over a billion dollars, and considering inflation since my teenage years when I was obsessed with reading everything I could about the medieval world, I'd say it's an even greater sum.
What’s more ironic is the “bad guy” has more morals than any other character of in the entire show. Like in real life, he would be reasonable and a “good guy”

Robin is appealing as a character because of the fact that he represents a force of justice, taking some of the exorbitant excess the owning class has accumulated by sitting on their asses all day making people pay for the necessities of life like food and shelter, and giving it back to the exploited working class. Not just a guy stealing stuff because he can. Those kinds of characters are fun, but have a completely different kind of appeal than a Robin Hood. The fact that the writers for this show missed that is genuinely impressive.

One major thing I would fix about this show (and many other things) is Robyn’s backstory.
Rather than a black girl growing up in the projects, have her as the daughter of a successful black businessman/woman. She goes to private schools, has tutors, can afford nice things, etc.
Then have her parent(s) lose their jobs because of their companies CEO deciding to downsize and close the office they work in, while simultaneously revealing the company to have had a record year of profit and the CEO’s living an extravagant life while their employees suffer.
So Robyn decides to fight the CEO and gets together a group of misfits to air the company’s dirty laundry and ‘rob’ them of their customers, all to the disapproval of her parents who just want to move on.

More compelling premise than what we got in the actual movie.
If the parents are all that successful being downsized would likely have been bundled with a lovely compensation package along with a hiring bonus from whatever company successfully courted them. Robyn's revenge spree would likely embarrass them more than anything else. It doesn't seem the best setup.

If they had made the first episode feature things like , say Robyn and her Mom having their own little bakery or something, trying to make things works. Watch them both having second jobs in the evening just to make ends meet while living in a rundown apartment. They are just scraping by, but one day, one day their own bakery will take off. That's their sparkle of hope. And then Evil Prince John comes in, obviously having bribed city council or the bank (and damned well show this in a scene) or whatever and closes down their bakery so he can build stuff. Then maybe I could have rooted for her.
Instead...we don't see mom working at all, just busy tresspessing cause she can't just protest outside of the building where it would be ok. Robyn delivers a grand total of 1 package. The rest of the time they seem busy with having sex I guess cause of refilling the condom jar remark, painting signs, more tresspassing with friends to make rap videos....while their apartment complex looks pretty fine to me. Heck, even has a gym!
It's funny how you can find many better ideas for the scenario and characterisations in the comment section, than what the actual director came up with. From people who have a better understanding of the issues themselves, as well as the actual legend of Robin Hood and its message.

With Robin Hood, especially the ones that tie in the Crusades, you also have the setting where the overall person in charge is not the true ruler. It's Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham who are getting greedy while John is acting under the aegis of his brother who is away at war in the Crusades.
Robin is sent home for whatever reason, normally one where he was captured and was released, partially, on agreement to not participate in the war as part of his parole to find out that the Prince and his buddies have been raiding to coffers and bleeding the peasants and others illegally. It's why King Richard's return is a major thing in a LOT of tellings of the story.
It's a lot of corrupt bureaucrats who illegitimately stole power that Robin is fighting against.
One of the major things with Robin Hood is that he's also an example of what a true noble ought to be in things, when the government turns on the people their job is supposed to be fighting it as well. And in several versions of the story, Robin is the descendant of one of Arthur's knights or Arthur himself.

I live about 30 minutes from Sherwood forest, and my family have lived in this area for generations, so Robin Hood is a part of cultural heritage for me.
What everyone fails to understand about the Ballad of Robin Hood is that it isn't about "taking from the rich to give to the poor", the story is a reminder to those who hold power what their duty is to the men and women who serve them.
An example of what i mean is when Robin and his men kidnap and rob the Bishop, they tie him to a tree and he assumes they're either going to kill or torture him, instead Robin unties him and asks him to perform mass for him and his men, to remind the Bishop that his purpose and role should be first and foremost to bring religion to common folk and nobility, not to collect and horde tax money that is used for corruption.

I feel old now, realizing how many Americans and just people in general have forgotten this. I think oversimplifying it to "stealing from the rich to give to the poor" was a huge disservice to the original legend.

That reference is what really confuses me as to where the heck this is supposed to take place. The Sherriff vehicles are very American (don't know how they are in Canada, but definitely not British). Oliver Queen is the perfect modern interpretation of Robin Hood, he fights crime with a bow and arrow.He fights for the people against the corrupt elitist system. Oliver is also a more interesting, complex and charismatic character because of his evolution from spoiled rich playboy to hero.

So funnily enough to, the reason you probably thought of the “Bear Necessities”, is because the animations from the Jungle Book, were reused in Robin Hood for the animation of Little John. There are a few circumstances that this occurred.
Trivia: sheriffs in Canada aren't at all like they are in the US. For the most part they do courtroom stuff, like security and prisoner transport. Some provinces do have them performing limited law enforcement, but even then: a sheriff isn't a rank. A sheriff isn't the head of the local police organisation. He or she is just another peace officer.

Well, most people active on the internet are in their late 20s or younger (many are under 18). So it's quite understandable they likely saw the Disney version first, which itself was already considered an old movie when I was a child. It is likely that many of us never had a chance to watch the older version.

Robin Hood is a legend that may or may not have some loose basis in reality, like King Arthur, we will never really know what actual inspiration it had if any, just theories. A lot of the popular version of the story comes from an oral tradition that became somewhat formanized combined with the usage of the character in a novel from 1819 called "Ivanhoe" which takes place in the same time period (also being fantasy) and uses Robin Hood under the name of "Locksley" as a supporting character. A lot of his current characterization and even look comes from how he was presented in that as initial printings had illustrations.
It is important to note that anyone who thinks Robin Hood was a criminal or anti-government or anything somehow missed the point, or saw the stories too young to really understand the concept. The idea is basically that King Richard the Lionheart was captured during The Crusades (something like this really happened), a noble who fought in the Crusades, Robin Of Locksley, returns home to find that due to the religious and political alliances that allowed the powers of the time to unify, "Prince John" has taken over England due to blood ties to King Richard, though this happened due to political alliances with France to whom he was primarily loyal, and well France and England have some nasty history "The Hundred Years War" and all of that. This is why you have the whole thing of Normans (a reference to the city of Normandy where French power was centralized at the time) oppressing the Saxons. Prince John being pretty much French has used him being the highest ranking royal they can find to take over England and start taxing the crap out of the people for not only his own enrichment, but also to send back home to France. So you pretty much have the imagery of England paying taxes to a hated foreign power due to blood ties and politics. You can sort of guess how that pissed people off.
At any rate, this was from a time period where things like knights and nobles were not seen as being bad. In fact calling someone "noble" or having "noble traits" still has positive associations going back to this time. While of course things didn't stay that way, understand that originally nobles did take decent care of their people in a sort of symbiotic relationship before what we all know historically happened. Robin Hood is a throw back to the time period where it was not considered somehow offensive to think a literal "White Knight" was going to come charging out to protect his people from bandits or whatever as nobles actually did that sort of thing once upon a time.
At any rate in this context Robin is a good ruler, and the rightful lord of those lands. He tells Prince John he can fuck right off with what he's doing, so Prince John declares him an outlaw even if this is technically all Robin's land in the name of the missing king. Robin is supposed to be the one who collects the taxes based on what's reasonable, and then give a portion of that to King Richard, and in the context of the story since he was well liked before he had to leave for the crusades, we can presume he was reasonable about it.
From there as we know the details vary, but Prince John fails to kill Robin, and Robin goes and rounds up a bunch of militia as "bandits" who start robbing the tax collectors lead by the local Sheriff, and murdering the crap out of any French soldiers or Knights Prince John sends after him from his foreign alliances, as using foreign troops was a big part of how he was supposed to have seized power. The story ends where Robin keeps this going long enough for King Richard The Lionheart to return from The Crusades, and of course then Prince John has no claim to rule since the actual king is back and there is no need for a regent. Given what happened he of course is generally portrayed as simply pardoning Robin Hood, and declaring him the king. In some stories, he dies when Prince John tries to murder King Richard or something, and then unleashes one final arrow over Sherwood from the battlements of his castle, and of course kids around the general region could then look to see if they could find Robin's final arrow for many generations. It's been told in different ways as it's a legend, we can assume if something like this happened, the specifics are probably substantially different, sort of like any reality that might have been behind King Arthur.
I doubt many read this (I've written it before to explain it on youtube) but if you read most of the versions you'll notice all of these elements. This is sort of why something like Robyn Hood is genuinely offensive, they miss the point of the story and why it resonated all these years. The thing is Robin Hood was not a criminal... he was simply declared one, he's literally the rightful ruler of those lands, defending his people against incredible odds. It's a story about a guy fighting a foreign invader, and a totally messed up political situation that was hurting people.
Also if you must know the reason why Robin Hood uses a longbow is specifically nationalistic symbolism as he's fighting The French. See in verified history in the final major battles between France and England, France seemed to have an overwhelming advantage and pretty much road in with masses of knights, being a group of cocky bastards, and a bunch of British levies with Long Bows mostly just stood back and massacred them all with massed fire as at the time they had never seen anything like that before. If you look up things like "The Battle Of Agincourt" you will find out this is absolutely true, and it turned France from the obvious winner, into a bit of a joke as the literal flower of French Knighthood got turned into pincushions in massive numbers. Thus the Long bow is specifically symbolic of England really messing up the cocky French and turning the tables against them specifically when there should be overwhelming odds in their favor.... pretty much what Robin Hood is doing on a smaller scale you might note. As a result you might get the impression this story is intended to be just a wee bit nationalistic on top of everything.

This comment is historically inaccurate, and misplaces events by hundreds of years. The hundreds Year war didnt take place until 250 years or so after the time of King Richard and King John. From the perspective of retelling the classic Robin Hood story, it's maybe important to remember that the main character is one of society's elites. Having a privileged education as a ruler and knowledge of the realm beyond the visible area of the story helped justify his actions, because he was able to judge the consequences to society. (You could also argue the specific ways in which society and the local government was messed up helped as well.) Might be able to claim that given the changing forms of education, in the modern age a normal person with enough access to high-quality data and putting in enough research and study to comprehend it could do the job.
One of the big problems with taking the story into an urban setting is that you replace the steady stream of travelers who basically disappear from the world like game NPCs once robbed and out of sight with people who will be sticking around, and you replace the forest which could theoretically (albeit not usually in practice) provide all a bandit group needs to survive with an environment entirely dependent on goods flowing in.
What's even worse about the mom willing to risk her life, her kid's lives, the other residents of the building's lives, being able to walk again, and her children having a bright future all for rented buildings; the buildings themselves are not actually wanted.
These are project buildings and they were, and are, hated by EVERYONE. They were hell for residents because in actuality they were built to put as many poor people into as possible, meaning the rooms themselves were small, the building was not given actual care when built, it was any actual, professional, self-respecting architect's nightmare.
Most, if not all, of these buildings were abandoned because no one wanted to stay, and were hated so much that when the day came that the buildings were blown down, the old residents had a front row seat and CHEERED as the buildings came down.
And the director thought they were a good example of housing for people to the point they would risk their lives for less than the minimum. The real residents WISHED this was what the living environment looked like. Why would he think these atrocities were good thing for poor people to want to save?

I loved your explanation of Robin Hood and what its truly about. So much of Hollywood doesn't understand it and the fact that it's lost on so many people baffles me.
There is a comic book hero called Robyn Hood female version of Robin Hood that was monster hunter, I was very disappointed when I found out that in this series Robyn Hood is not hunting monsters and supernatural creatures
When a show runs on average from 43-52 Minutes with no commercials, and Alteroi spends likely more time broadcasting (57 minutes) what a crapfest it is, that truly shows how patheticly this show impacted her.
I got nothing else to say she didn't masterly say or crack up better over in that video.
The sad part is, with just a few tweaks, this could have actually worked.

The basic concept of a modern day Robin Hood was already done in the '80s, and actually done well, and that was the A-Team. Even Knight Rider was closer to the concept of modern day Robin Hood who rights wrongs and punishes those who are above the law way better than this.

And what sorta pisses me off about that comic is that the whole Batfamily is with her and Batman is by himself. I’m black and I watched the first episode and I felt nothing the whole time it wasn’t till the stick fight scene were I just had enough and watched something else.he can call me racist but honestly the shows sucks.
The thing is though there is already a modern day Robin Hood no not Arrow the show I'm talking about is called Leverage. The show is about thieves helping people and bringing down corrupt people and while also stealing and giving back to those that were harmed by the corrupt. It features a diverse cast and interesting stories that are both fun and moving at times.
Leverage was so fucking good! It came out at the perfect time too

I'm looking at this and...I thought after seeing some stuff that the show was going to be shit...let's just say, my incredibly low expectations couldn't have ever prepared me for this and have been thoroughly shattered.

I think the john and robyn stick fight is in reference to how Robin and Little John meet in the actual story, Little John and his outlaw gang attempt to force Robin to pay a toll to pass a bridge, then a fight with quarter staffs begin, Robin defeats John but John respects Robin and they become firm friends

Rather than post-apocalyptic I think a Dystopia would work better for what they were going for (Well, what I THINK they were going for, I have no idea what was going on in their minds when they greenlit this) Government vs rebels, rich vs poor, you don't have to push it as far as the ridiculous Teen Dystopias out there, just keep things simple, it might be cliche but it's still better than this.

The fact that Robin Hood has to actually be explained as not actually stealing from the rich to give to the poor as really meaning to take back what was taken from the poor by the elites and given back so they can survive is what really gets me . As a kid I may not have had the right words to describe what it meant but I knew Robin Hood didn't just steal from the rich and gave to the poor I understand he took what was already taken from the poor and gave it back. Why people can't understand this now when I and all the kids I grew up with knew this as little children makes no sense to me

THANK YOU! Dear god, I am so sick of people using the "It gets good after X number of episodes/hours" defense for movies, shows, and games. I don't care how supposedly good a game like Final Fantasy 13 is after the 50 hour mark. I'm not about to slog my way through the previous 50 hours of crap just to get to that point. Same thing applies here. I don't care if Robyn Hood becomes the Citizen Kane of TV shows within the last 2 episodes of it. I'm not sitting through all the previous crappy episodes just to reach a point that, quite frankly, is too little too late.
For a guy "all about calm meditation to solve violence" he certainly promotes a lot of violence and crime in his work. In my opinion, that shows exactly who he really is.
