This movie was a product of its time. The basic Final Fantasy premise was twisted so hard to make it approachable to the uninitiated (it succeeded in that, I didn't know a single thing about the games but felt no more lost than, say, with Independence Day) and the whole thing rode off the '90s wagon of CGI-powered sci-fi. Back then, you pretty much had to be set either in space or the future to be considered sci-fi, unlike today when even superhero movies get grouped under that moniker. Nobody would have called Raimi's Spider-Man sci-fi back then.

If you want a really bad trip, look up the old Final Fantasy anime ... "By the power of dirt" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 it'll make you look at the whole concept of Vincent like 'bruh wtf'
And this is from a life long player and fan, all the way back to FF the original....
The points you made are pretty on point. It's not a final fantasy movie, or a movie, but it is fantasy, they at least got that part.
Like someone else said, it's a victim of it's era....
