  • You don’t have to ask around too much to discover that Patek Philippe’s 5170 is considered one of, if not the best chronographs ever made. It’s slick, it’s slim, it’s executed to perfection-but it also costs some £40,000. Just how close can you get for a quarter of the price?

    Girard Perregaux used to make modules and (just like Jaeger LeCoultre), entire movements for Patek Philippe. And as you have mentioned, Patek Philippe (not that long ago), used ebauches and complete movements made by Lemania, not dissimilar from Onega Speedmaster cal.1863.. They took Lemania movement apart, scalloped few bits, polished the gears to death, so that no one else, can ever service the movement ... and stamped it with PP logo..
    So as in everything? You need to compare apples with apples and automatic movement with automatic movement. No doubt, Girard Perregaux do make fine manual wind movements in bi-compass configuration as well. It is just that in your case, Watchfinder has none of them in stock. It could be, because owners of GP watches .... don't want to part with them. One would hope, that for Girard Perregaux (makers of 3 bridges), being part of French luxury group Kering, will give them funding, needed to expand their range and to improve quality.
    Otherwise? Great review. Keep up the good work.

    • @quadZ_z
      @quadZ_z 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a funny thing that the high-end watchmaking community sets up expectations of absolute *perfection*. Generally speaking, I'm a firm believer in the concept of "perfectly imperfect". Part of the beauty in life is that true perfection is unattainable. Tattoos, for example: even with prefect execution by the artist, tattoos are bound to fade over time, to distort as your skin ages. This will surely bother many people, and those people won't get tattoos; I find peace accepting that "prefect" neither achievable, nor necessary to achieve beauty or satisfaction.
      I suppose luxury watchmakers aren't unique in aiming for utter perfection- Rolls Royce comes to mind. Pour enough time and money into something, and you'll get damn near close enough.
      (procrastination-fueled rant over, back to studying for me!)

    For once a disappointing review: this comparison makes no sense. The correct GP to compare the Patek with should have obviously been the caliber GP 3800-0001 fully integrated manually wound chrono with column-wheel and 40 mm case. The back is as beautiful as the Patek's and it also features the jumping minutes at the front... That was the matchup I was waiting & hoping for!

    >For the designers
    As a designer, Patek's dial typography is just not up to the level and is the main reason i dislike the brand. Terrible whitespace management, weird font selection, low readability. That serif on the outside is awfully kerned, uneven. The enormous gap in "15" seems a result of automatic settings and lack of manual adjustments. Chronometer markings would be much more readable if the font was less vertically proportioned, now it's one giant mess of numbers. The "2" in the subdials has a closed loop on top because the ink merged at that size (to the naked eye that would look even worse). This is the area where Lange always wins and Patek is bad unfittingly for its otherwise strong attention to detail. GP is far more pleasing to look at in these regards.

    • @AbstractMan23
      @AbstractMan23 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stasys Čhepulis yep I was also going to comment on the horrendous 15 kerning pair... the typography just looks so wrong and careless. Embarrassing at this high level.
      The two fonts they used are just jarring and awkward.
      Check out at 2:06 how bad the MA kerning pair is, as well as how distorted the letters are due to such thickly applied ink. The counterform on the A has almost completely filled in!

    Ironically enough, I just bought a GP Sea-Hawk from the late 30s or early 40s, it’s extremely similar to a Patak Philippe Calatrava 96!! Literally down to the case shaped, dimensions, and Breguet numerals on the dial and sub dial at the six! The GP Seahawk aren’t the most rare, but this version definitely is one of them as it’s almost classier than the more militaristic designed ones.

    My Alpha 'speedmaster' column wheel chrono movement was a big, pleasant surprise when viewed right out of the box. Now I'm even more impressed with it. $170. Delivered.
    Brand caveat, my Alpha 'explorer' was a waste of money- Erratic accuracy, stuttering second hand, hacks but won't restart without shaking and tapping. Alpha (Hong Kong) says it's running fine as far as they are concerned.

    So comparing what I assume to be a new Patek at 40 g's to a used GP at 10 g's means what? If you can afford a New PP crono these comparisons are useless, but entertaining. Just for thought, I got a Bambino with a brilliant dial that keeps marvelous time.

    Patek is worth 4x more, but that does not stop the GP from being a very nice watch. Especially the rose gold one with the ruthenium dial. There's also a very nice platinum cased one with a blue dial which imo rivals the Patek 5070P in the looks dep.

Or Kudoke 2. Love the high quality and content of this channel. The second best channel out there (2nd to Adrian @Bark and Jack).

    I have a breitling Super Avenger Chrono. Since December 1st when I reset the date I have gained 26 seconds of time in 20 days. I honestly dont know if that PP can say the same. My watch is also 300M waterproof. I know for a fact the PP isnt.
    It might not have the name and the pedigree. But for functionality I think my Breitling destroys the PP.

      Except if you actually could look past the hype you’d realize that the Patek is actually finished better overall.......as a mechanical/manufacturing engineer that studies finishing implication and having studied both the 5170 and the 1815. If you’re willing to look beyond the hype you have fallen into, I can explain.

      @@burritomaker69 the Patek is still incredible, but it does undercut the majority of equally complicated Pateks and does with arguably better aesthetics. Have to give it to PP on proportions though, much slimmer than any ALS

    Two companies are genuinely older - VC and Breguet. Blancpain claims it is the oldest watchmaker around but to me, this is BS because like other brands of similar posture, they claim the history that isnt really connected to the company that's around today. Blancpain, like Arnold and Son was ressurected from the dead and represents a vampire company if you know what I mean (returning to life after death kind of situation). So please stop claiming the history that doesnt belong to you and be honest about the lineage. I think this will go a long way in the watch community!

  • @golfpark94

    When people buy an PP they not only buy a watch but become part of a brand that has a very recognizable line of watches. Only lately new models seem to be more modern. In the case of Girard Perregaux it is hard to be able to see where the company tries to go. I do respect the craftmanship but some of the divers or chronographs are a bit extreme and may not be for everybody.
