The difference in sound between closed and open cords is HUGE! Thanks for explaining this so clearly, Jim! 🎤🔥

A lot of singers use breathiness stylistically. I think the greatest pursuit of a singer is to find a voice that others desire to listen to. Sometimes these voices are idiosyncratic by the standards of polite vocal pedagogy, but they mark the times and seasons of peoples lives.

Hey Jim great video, I have a question for us, so I've been singing About A Girl forever but always knew I was singing it wrong, yesterday I found a yt video of just vocals for unplugged , it sounded like Kurt was singing in his nasal resonance with rasp, but he almost sounds like he's barely trying , I tried finding the placement and I could kinda do it but he also uses the yodel flip a ton, also listened to the bleach vocals only and he's forcing allot more but it's easier to hear what he originally did. My question is if I'm correct on this discovery and is it possible to get rasp in a higher placement ? On the easy friend part it sounds like he's singing in his nose😅 just wondering how you would approach this correctly. Thanks Jim😊

Hey great analysis my friend! Yes I would say go nasally on the higher parts. 😎👍🏼

It’s great to hear you are still learning after 30 years! I had my thyroid removed a few years back and took a year to be able to sing properly. However I can sing higher now where I was always guilty of singing full belly all the time but with limited ability.
I can sing stairway to heaven now! Not the falsetto and part though, I use a lower rock voice for that and it almost sounds pretty good lol.

That is awesome! So glad to hear you got your voice back! Nobody understands the frustration until they experience. You must be on 250mcg of Levo now (?) guessing because I have a friend who had his removed too... All the best and stay healthy my friend!

@@RockYourBestVocals thanks a lot! And yes I’m on the same meds. Been practicing karaoke in my car g for nearly a year now. Might be time for some open mics 👍🏼

hey I have a question that is similar to this. How to avoid squeezing the vocal cords while doing false fold compression? Sometimes when I do it incorrectly my vocal cords almost go numb and they do not respond well and my voice breaks up a lot.

False Fold is separate to Compression. Sounds like you may be blowing too much air, but it's impossible to diagnose in text... that's why professional feedback is so vital to progressing

Nice one. You are literally forcing a falsetto into a very weak head voice coordination. I used to do this as well until I studied bel canto and learned how to really keep that connected sound all the way up and down with no shift in tone or sound quality. The yawn WITH tilt, support and compression will do the trick. Bel canto Tilt position and snarl - look it up it will help you I promise.

Thanks Ricki, That’s exactly what I’m doing in the video 😎👍🏼
