He sounds tired and flat

AHA! I knew the chorus was just layered John parts.
It’s very easy to notice. I think it’s ok, you use some resources while recording to make the song more powerful, but even if you can’t bring exactly the same live, the essence is there.

Surely he could learn his own lyrics. Looks bad looking down all the time reading them.
He's actually not reading at all. He is very open about forgetting lyrics and improvises that on stage all the time. Also.. for a 60 year old who's been making music for over 40 years, forgetting some lyrics off of a song from one of the 2 double albums that came out in the same year, does warrant some slack, no? :p
But yeah.. the reason he actually looks down like that is because he needs to concentrate to get the melodic parts right. He is a great songwriter but a mediocre singer at best. And he knows.
It's actually brilliant commitment and love within the band that allows for this space.
