    As a Lithuanian I can say, we are hustling to help as much as we can, politically, militarily and even as civilian initiatives like fundraising for Bayraktar drone and the recent one for radars in which we gathered 14M euros. Regarding self interest sure that is there but I do hope Ukraine realizes that the rest of Europe bound together in NATO is perfectly safe without Ukraine. Any agression against Poland, Estland etc would trigger all NATO armies in total. So yes there is self interest but there is also a LOT of empathy and willingness help and pay the price for that . I know myself of people that went to Ukraine to help without pay and there are thousands right now that do the same. Dont underestimate the passion of doing the right thing in western europe (can only speak for them, theres lots of other countries). From a Polish perspective... Why are we helping Ukrainians? Because they want nothing but peace, freedom and prosperity. Just like Poles always wanted and struggled to get it. Because they were attacked and they are defending their country. Something we had to do multiple times and we respect everyone who is willing to die for his country. Because we experienced Russian "liberation" and we would not wish it upon our worst enemies. And most of all... Because we are brothers. Brothers who had pretty major disagreement and spilled a lot of blood but also brothers who will not let other brother get bullied.

Believe me, if we wanted to do our interest we wpuld have cultivated ties with Russia and left Ukraine alone. We had great difficulties on bills renouncing to cheap russia resources. Despite being strong and faithful to our idea of democracy, we know we are risking a third wolrd war with Russia. But we are also really disappointed.we believed Russia was nevermore a threat and the weak motivations by Putin led us to our great shock of aknowledging of russky mir and the return of soviet/tsatist imperialism. It is understood ukraine was only the first step,then moldova,georgiA, POLAND and BALTICS. Warships and submarines in the mediterrean. As a Dutchman let me answer the question why countries are helping Ukraine.
    1. The similarity in the rhetoric of Russia and Nazi-Germany when it annexed Czechoslovakia in 1938 and it invaded Poland in 1939. It shows the nature of Russia, and we don't want that in Europe.
    2. The atrocities committed by Russia in Ukraine. Bucha was an eye opener for many people, and led to much moral outrage. Unfortunately, this was not a single case, but was followed by many atrocities, too many to list them here.
    3. The heroism of the Ukrainian people. Yes, Ukrainians you impressed us!
    4. Self interest. Maintaining the world order is in everybody's interest. We do not want autocratic countries like Russia and China to set the tone.
    5. For Europeans: we have had so many wars in our history, we don't want that anymore. Respect of each other's borders, without having to think how they were historically, is an important element to keep the peace. Anyway, with free trade and travel in the EU, it does not matter too much how these borders are drawn.
    So, it is a combination of factors. The moral outrage is an important factor why support for Ukraine will continue among large parts of our populations.

Even tho i kind of agree that putin was quite transparent wth his intentions, motives and could be even right their country is fragile and only way out is expansionism as they always did. burn the land and conquer and push masses in front of GRU agents who shot anybody turning back. All valid reasons. I also think that support is given “differently” depending on whether you’re a government of a country or a citizen of it. This is neither bad nor divisive as both work together, and is a result of perspective. Governments look more towards the “big picture”; geopolitics, economies etc because that is their primary job. Individuals look at it from a more personal perspective; the protection of individuals, relief of suffering, standing up to overwhelming injustice etc.

    As a Ukrainian, I view the UK as my biggest ally because support for Ukraine is simply universal there across the entire political spectrum (from the far-left to conservatives). Only some very fringe activists like some Corbyn supporters dislike Ukraine. The UK also was the first country to start training Ukrainian troops and the first country to supply us with anti-tank missiles, tanks and (reportedly) long-range missiles. While the U.S. delivered much more military aid, it unfortunately has a lot of anti-Ukraine people from the Republican Party (Trump supporters). As an American, I'd say we help Ukraine because we want lasting peace and we can see that Ukraine is not the aggressor. As far as our own selfish interests, it is true that we would not want to see another "evil empire" forming, such as the former Soviet Union.
    Still, from this side of the ocean, we see a lot of downsides and risks to offset any ulterior goals. For example, the war worsens the already struggling economy, and the enormous expense comes at a time when we are already spending our grandchildren's money. The worst issue is the high risk of escalation, American troops becoming involved as American soldiers die overseas and, of course, the ever-present threat of nuclear or other WMDs.
    We do NOT see this as an excuse to hurt Russia. Every American would love to see this war end. If you think we were looking for an excuse to torment Russia, then why did we do so little when Russia "annexed" Crimea and sunk two big bear paws onto Georgian land?
    America is naturally isolationist and we see huge losses and huge risks. The main reason we are involved is the simplest reason: It is the right thing to do. That is a powerful force.

    As an American I sometimes make the "it's in our interest..." argument to my fellows who wonder why we are doing this. But for me personally it really comes down to two things.
    One is that this is a matter of right and wrong. Most wars are muddy, nuanced things, where it can be hard to say whether one side or the other is in the right (usually both sides are mostly wrong). That is not the case here. Ukraine was minding it's own business when Russia attacked them, committing atrocities wherever they went and proclaiming it's intention to commit genocide against the Ukrainian people. This is a morally clear situation. Ukraine is in the right, Russia in the wrong.
    Another reason is that I had the opportunity, many decades ago, to visit Kyiv when it was still part of the Soviet Union. I came away thinking that Kyiv was the most beautiful city in the world. When Chornobyl happened my heart wept for the people of Kyiv. It pained me to think of fallout falling upon such an extraordinary place. And now it is bombs that fall on that special city, and it pains me to think of this.

    I think that bearded guy has it. It's about the rules-based order. Borders are inviolate without the consent of the countries involved is one of those. This is rarely a black and white line and it's why there was less escalation after Crimea or South Ossetia because there were real questions regarding the will of the people of those areas. An attack on Kiev though was certainly one of those black and white issues. Western Ukraine obviously did not want to be ruled by Russia. There was no question about it. This was a clear violation of the rules-based order and the escalation meant that without a response, the west was essentially saying that it no longer applied. It would have given tacit assent to a Chinese takeover of Taiwan. The West believes that keeping borders inviolate post-WW2 is a key part of maintaining peace in Europe and throughout the world. Peace and stability are good for us all in almost every sense. If Ukraine is able to take back its borders it sends an extremely strong message to every country that the rules don't just exist on paper, but will be enforced. It is a shame that Ukrainians have to pay the price to send this message, but I think that all of us in the West are grateful to them for their sacrifice.

    Ironically, I think a case can be made that EU, NATO, & the United States are defending Ukraine for more or less the same reason that the RF has attacked it: it is a barrier, a bidirectional shield between those two groups of countries. If the RF takes it over, then its utility as a shield for the EU, etc., is greatly diminished, just as if Ukraine joins or is friendly toward the EU, etc., its utility as a shield for the RF.
    Personally, I feel that the Russians' worry about needing a shield is largely unfounded because I can't imagine that the EU, etc., would ever invade the RF militarily. On the other hand, Putin has very clearly shown the world that the same can't be said about worries that the RF might invade Europe. Therefore, the West is unlikely to let Putin win this.
    Of course, freedom, morality, international law, and future commercial interests are also involved.

    • @InqvisitorMagnvs
      @InqvisitorMagnvs ปีที่แล้ว

      The largest country in Europe, home to almost 40 million people (at least before Putin’s invasion) is a ‘shield’..? It’s a country, not a barrier. Why would EU, NATO, United States want a “bidirectional shield”? The West has constantly and repeatedly tried to engage Russia peacefully in diplomacy and trade (and buying lots of Russian gas), contrary to Putin’s delusions that the West has been out to destroy Russia. And Ukraine as “shield” doesn’t block borders with Russia (and vassal state Belarus) to Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Norway if Russia wanted to invade on a new front.
      Russia always wants to dominate puppet regime ‘buffer states’ they claim as their ‘sphere of influence’ due to unique Russian neurotic imperial insecurities-like the Soviet Empire and Warsaw Pact of hostages forced to pretend they were “allies” for half-a-century. And like the state of Belarus today that Ukraine is fighting to avoid becoming.
      Conversely all of Soviet Russia’s old Warsaw Pact buffer states raced to apply to join NATO as fast as they could, and Ukraine was trying to do so too (but contrary to Putin’s claims about “aggressive NATO expansion”, as if were an empire, it’s in fact an arduous process for a country to meet high standards to apply for membership and be approved unanimously by all existing members before being allowed into the club).
      There is obviously a fundamental difference in how Russia views nations of people as shields and treats countries as nothing but buffer states for their own interests. The Eastern Flank of NATO member states that have joined since 1990 are not treated as expendable shields to protect Western Europe the way Russia treated them in USSR/Warsaw Pact. On the contrary, NATO is committed making those countries’ _borders_ with Russia into secure barriers to prevent the countries from being invaded and reduced to human shields on a Russian warpath.

    • @gshenaut
      @gshenaut ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@InqvisitorMagnvs I agree there are differences. However, it is extremely common to hear variations on the refrain “if we don't protect Ukraine, then Russia will threaten Western Europe.” I've heard Ukrainians, Poles, and others make this point. In fact, I've even heard Russians suggest or even say outright that they will eventually take over, e.g., Poland and the Baltic states.
      I understand that pointing out the parallel eastern and western perspectives may sound like I'm equating them, and I'm not. Something can resemble something else in some way without being identical. In this case, the shields are part of the picture, but not the only part. Russia is motivated by some kind of divine mission to fulfill their destiny of uniting all Slavs in a great Slavic empire (or alternatively, to recreate the Soviet empire), by their paranoid fear of invasion by NATO (the western facing shield), and of course by the prospect of dividing up Ukraine's resources among the oligarchs. Ukraine is motivated by their desire to survive and to remain whole and independent. Europe and the US are motivated by their horror and disgust at Russia's actions, but also by their desire to forestall any future Russian aggression (the eastern facing shield). And, of course, arms manufacturers and dealers around the world are, as always, motivated by greed, and are currently LMAOing all the way to the bank.

    In the 1990s we gave our word we'd help defend Ukraine and its right to exist when it agreed to give up its nuclear arms in exchange for Russia respecting Ukraine's right to exist. Russia betrayed its word. The US will not.
    Ukraine has a right to exist. Ukraine has a right to cast its own sails and sail in any direction they wish. Moscow miscalculated on how strong they were. The miscalculated on how fierce the Ukranian spirit is and how strong the defenders really are. They miscalculated on how much we would be willing to help you in defending your land and existence. In 2014 we tried diplomatic and economic methods alone, that failed. Since then we've helped train and strengthen our ties.
    We didn't do enough in 2014. This time around we've set out to do as much as we can to both weaken the Russian war machine via sanctions and diplomatically pressuring Russia. We've also seen to it you have the items needed to protect yourselves. Personally I think we can do more. We should be sending F-16s. We should be supplying more armored vehicles. More advanced munitions. We've dispatched a great number of troops to Europe, if it wasn't for the nuclear fears we'd have our troops on the front lines. I personally would support doing so even now. But I do not want to see Ukranians being targeted with nuclear or chemical weapons. If that line is ever crossed we'll take a more active role with forces then. That is why Russia hasn't resorted to using them yet.
    We all know it wouldn't stop with Ukraine. We all know that guy wants to take it all. He finds whatever convieniant excuse he can to fulfill his evil desires. That's why he's allied with nations that commit genocide against their own populations. That is why he's allied with nations that use biological and chemical weapons on ethnic groups. That's why he aligns himself with totalitarian regimes that rob people of their freedoms and imprisons anyone who speak out against their governments.
    He's a criminal with a gun trying to commit strong arm robbery. If he doesn't get it he goes and tries to get a bigger weapon trying to force the world to give him what he wants. It is unfortunate for Ukraine having to have a despot like him on their border.
    Fortune favors the brave and the bold, Ukranians are both. Zelensky is the right guy to repesent Ukraine as he also proudly demostrates both and does everything he can by you to secure what's needed to survive and win. A great majority of the world admires your strength, courage, and will to survive as a free people.
    I heard a story recently which is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I forget which town it was, but they were and are facing food shortages. The Russian had mined the forests, so it's dangerous to forage there. Instead if letting their people starve the elders of the community have found the courage to go into the forest regardless to find mushrooms and other food sources. Instead of letting young able bodied individuals go they've taken over and have been risking it themselves since they've been blessed with a long life already allowing the younger generation to survive and hopefully also go on to live long and full lives. It's not that the youth wouldn't go too, the elders were strongly against it. That's a prime example of Ukranian strength, courage, bravery, love, and nobility. That's 100% why you are a people worth protecting and fighting for. And that's why I wish we didn't have to hold back ourselves. You're a people worth fighting for.

    Just came across this clip by accident, mixed feelings. On the one hand disappointed, somewhat feeling a lack of knowledge/gratefulness, and at the same time understanding that who do we in the West think we are considering it is the person in the street and particularly their soldiers who face the brunt of this war. Simultaneously a feeling of embarrassment & shame of not doing more whilst also having faith in our leaders/institutions about the need not to provoke an accidental nuclear exchange and all out war (WW3). A quick scan of the comments below was comforting where there is more explicit nuance & detail. The gentleman with trendy greyish beard & longer hair (sort of artistic looking) was interesting, as was the historian's view of "clash of civilisations". Even the guy who curtly declared outsiders only help for their own (economic) benefit (wrong in my view but would like to have heard more). Wish we did & do more for Ukraine before it's too late, as I fear we have decided here that Ukraine shall not lose, but not that Ukraine must win - definitions of each are important. Also outsiders, thanks to our media, have the impression that we are the reason Ukraine has not collapsed, rather than their own blood & iron, whereas the truth lies somewhere inbetween, e.g. most interviewed didn't really seem to grasp that non-military financial help from outside is the principal reason there is still a functioning economy in the country. Any comment can go on & on, but suffice to say we could do more, that more will take time as we decide upon the key question, that unfortunately will cost lives, that not all countries are pulling their weight (e.g. Hungary, but not only) that domestic problems do & will raise their heads as money is not infinitely abundant etc. etc. Enough.
