Hungary lost part of its territory to the USSR, which annexed it to Ukraine. I suspect Orban hopes that somehow, with Russia's help, he will get it back. However, Romania and Poland also lost territory to Ukraine, but they are helping Ukraine. Hungary seems to have forgotten 1956 and who, actually, grabbed its land.
I suspect, that friendship between Hungary with Russia, to allow Hungary, in near future to receive Transylvania from Romania. It a old dream of them for that land adn if it is possible Transcarpathia from Ukraine. I still wander why Hungary is still in EU?

Actually in 1918 half of Donbas was in the Russian Empire, up until that point Ukraine had not existed for almost 350 years, it was created after the Empire fell to the Soviets for a mere few years. To regain Ukraine the Soviets supported the Communist Ukrainians and once they won the civil war it was integrated into the USSR. Russian SSR then gave Ukraine Donbas and several of the key areas they are trying to regain today. The reason for the transfer, it was far from Moscow it made more sense to control the area from Kiev & it solidified a friendship within the Union. Similarly Crimea was given to Ukraine in 1954 by Khrushchev for the same reasoning.

Hungary was treated really bad by the russians in 1848/49, during The I and II World Wars It was fighting with the russians, in 1956 It was invaded by russia and treated really bad once again. Yeah, as ukrainian myself it is also sometimes really hard to take, because all my life I was speaking ukrainian and so are the people surrounding me. I think the main problem here is the russification that was done throughout the years and finally after a little bit of the break with independence on our side, (of course, with lots of hardships and step by step progress) we started to slowly regain what was taken from us and get our identity back. New generations were born and during years ukrainian language and mentality was spreading gradually through the country. And obviously when Russia saw these changes that we truly wanted for ourselves, they chose to invade and strike again. So, yes, we have still lots of people who grew up with that language (and I cannot blame them because they were raised that way), but we were and still aiming to regenerate our language fully! I truly hope that we will be able to do it and that every other country in need of this treatment(like Belarus for example) would be able as well! Слава Україні!
