    Simon isn't casting Bigby's Hand. It's Maximilian's Earthen Grasp. It perfectly fits the spell's description. From being made it the same type of earth it was pulled from (cobblestone), to being reformed with a bonus action the first time it's smashed

    • @TheGIJew.
      @TheGIJew. ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It doesn't act like an earthen grasp though. He can manipulate and control it freely, it doesn't just come up from the ground and grapple a target

      Its Bigby's Hand. They released character sheets for all the characters, and Simon has Bigby's on his spell list and not Earthen Grasp. His and Sofina's hands just have different aesthetics, that's why they look different.

    I’m glad you mentioned bardic inspiration! I liked they way they handled bard in this movie. It was a very subtle “I find you strangely compelling right now” instead of an in-your-face spell casting ability.

      Wow, I couldn't disagree more. I think the barred was done HORRIBLY. I love everything else about the film, but they felt inept or lost with utilizing the bard. He was more like the leader of the A Team than a bard imo.

    10:57 I think Simon cast Scorching Ray there. Firebolt's damage increases as you get more powerful but it doesn't do extra bolts, and a twin spell would only send 2 instead of three, Scorching Ray does 3 blast at its basic level (which I think is 2nd?).

    • @AdderTude
      @AdderTude ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I figured it was Magic Missile, since the spell adds more darts the more spell slots you have and (at least in the Baldur's Gate games) a high-level version can shoot three missiles at once.

    • @elwourmo993
      @elwourmo993 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      thought the same thing! also i'm fairly certain that what they call chaos bolt is supposed to be magic missle. it's depicted as red to pink in most media but it doesn't say so in any description +sofina blocks it completly with her shield (which is something the shield spell does specifically)

      well the party should be at a considerbly high level if you think about it. They face an enemy that can cast lvl 9 spells. And if i not mistaken then Meteor Swarm is a 9th level spell wich means Sofina casted in the last encounter two 9th level spells when normal player character only get one 9th level spell slot if they don´t get that one certain epic boon.

  • @psimas1982
    @psimas1982 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    It was a super fun movie, and this was a great break down. I think that during the meeting with Forge and the rich dudes, Sophia seems to be concentrating on something. It takes a bit of time to discover the intruder (just long enough to get the information they need, conveniently), and I personally think it was "detect thoughts". And then possibly "see invisibility" to check for an invisible enemy. When she doesn't see anyone, and because she is a wicked smart magic user, she comes to the conclusion of a shapeshifter... Just a thought.

    I am pretty sure 55 was Scorching Ray, not Fire Bolt, since it was 3 rays. Also I in the hand battle, I think Simon used Maximillian's Earthen Grasp, not Bigby's Hand. At 9:53 I'm pretty sure Sofina casts Watery Sphere there, not Otiluke's Resilient Sphere, for a number of reasons.
    1. The sphere looks like it is made of water (this can be seen most clearly when it bursts).
    2. Otiluke's Resilient sphere can't be moved by the caster, while watery sphere can.
    3. Otiluke's Resilient sphere can only contain one creature, not 2, while watery sphere can trap up to 4 medium creatures.

    • @Xalonus
      @Xalonus ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Im going to have to disagree with you friend. The Watery Sphere is a sphere of complete water, both players were able to breath and scream while in the sphere. Additionally the sphere is a floating conjuration with a 5 foot radius, which means it would be far larger than we see (able to occupy 4 tiles. I will point out Resilient Sphere could technically fit both players in it due to the target only having to be one player, and the maximum size of said player can be large. Which 2 players would technically be considered large. She also doesn't move the orb the thing just start rolling on its own, and bouncing. Again Watery Sphere floats, therefore cannot bounce. And finally when the spell ends it can extinguished a fire, which is another indicator that when it bursted, if it was in fact Watery Sphere there should have been a puddle of water and wet players. But there wasn't. Regardless, it was a sick use of the spell, if it was either one lol, and it was a great and fun movie through and through haha.

    • @BYERE
      @BYERE ปีที่แล้ว +7

      As Xalonus pointed out, it quite literally says in the spell that Resilient Sphere can be moved by the victim pushing against the wall (for up to half their movement speed... though in this case it gained momentum and started rolling on its own).
      The sphere itself is weightless, so assuming you're strong enough to lift up the victim/s inside it, you can actually pick the sphere up without worry.
      Watery Sphere can ONLY be moved by the caster, not those inside it, and only by 30ft at a time. It's not subject to momentum.

    Personally, I haven't seen their stat blocks but I like to think of the spells like this:
    #1, Kira's necklace isn't casting Invisibilty, its acting like a Ring of Invisibility.
    #2, Simon cast Fog Cloud to block the chasing guard's vision, not Gust of Wind.
    #3, Simon could be casting Magnetism, but he later says that he knows telekinesis, so telekinesis seems more likely.
    #4, That could be Holy Weapon, but I think Magic Weapon is more likely since it's in the Players Handbook
    #5, Since Sofina later casts Time Stop using her 9th level spell slot, the fiery meteors would be Melf's Minute Meteors, which has six meteors instead of four
    #6, ok that is clearly Animate Objects and not Polymorph
    #7, Since Chaos Bolt only shoots one bolt, this spell should be Magic Missile, 3 blasts of force damage.
    #8, Many people think that Simon's hand spell looks more like Maximilian's Earthen Grasp, I think so as well.
    #9, If you look closely you can see Simon actually casts 5 bolts of white energy, some are blocked by Sofina's shield. Maybe upcasted Scorching Ray with the sorcerer ability to change the damage to cold?
    #10, Simon casts Scorching Ray, firing off one, two, three bolts!
    #11, Xenk used divine sense

    • @Phoenixfede1989
      @Phoenixfede1989 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      to #5: It could be that the DM of that game gave Sofina an epic boon so she would have two 9th level spell slots. but your explaination is also good.
      to #3: I don´t know, Telekinesis say´s you can use it to one object, Simon clearly used it on multiple at the same time even when they where all clung together. but they only do when that cluster of metal objects float over so unless you want to say Simon used two concentration spells here at the same time i don´t think that telekenisis is the right answer

I didn’t see any comments about this, but although I originally thought that the assassin was using green flame blade, but I personally thing that it is a re-flavored flame tongue. First, with green flame blade, the blade only catches fire when the attack happens, but the assassin lights it when he draws it, it stays lit, and in his battle with Xenk, Xenk grabs the blade and it seems to burn him even without being swung. I've never played a sorcerer, so this question might have an obvious answer to folks who know the rules, e.g. casting two cantrips simultaneously. But from what I gather, Mage Hand could conceivably do everything we saw in that scene.
    Regardless, this was a fun and informative video, and I felt that the film handled magic really well. I'll look forward to what they do next, whether they decide to stick with the current band of misfits or start exploring different aspects of Forgotten Realms lore.

    2) Concentration-based spells cast through Wild Magic don't require concentration to maintain, and always last the full duration. Thus, he couldn't have just dropped the spell whenever he wanted.
    As much as I loved the movie for its sticking to details as per the games, this was one instance of "Rule of Cool" writing, as opposed to "Rules as Written".
    Also, for a sorcerer who can't even attune to magical items, I highly doubt Simon was Lv13 or higher (aka, able to cast 7th level spells like Reverse Gravity, even by accident)

    The wagon heist was the standout sequence in the film. It was so good that the confrontation with Sofina (as enjoyable as that was) couldn't match it.

    I wish they had emphasized Edgin’s spells/abilities more as not seeing any indication of them really makes him feel less bardic. Super fun movie though!

    a very fun video! i'm not a d&d player myself so most of the easter eggs and homages (except the owlbear) went over my head, but i highly enjoyed the movie and immediately rushed to google to see if anyone made an article listing all the spells because i found it so interesting! so thanks for this video.

    Notable, when Simon successfully counterspells the time stop at the end of the film, it’s likely that it was upcast for a lower dc given the line “I’ve gotten stronger since then” or whatever the exact line is

    The fresh cut grass thing is not a Critical Role reference. According to Wikipedia, D&D: HAT filming took place between April and August 2021, while Campaign 3 of CR didn't start until October of 2021. Unless Sam Riegel gave the film makers a clue several months in advance, there's no way it could be a reference.

    I didn't realize that these characters had character sheets! I wonder if I can sneak them into my games as NPCs. | |D

    Some much love went into this movie and one aspect I really like was how they did their back stories. Normally backstories are more or less layered in during most movies over the course of the run time. In most D&D session it is kind of like "Ok exposition the shit out of your background all at once right now so everyone at the table knows what they are dealing with". Everyone got those 2-3 minutes of literally just reading off their back ground. Was a nice little nod that I appreciated. Also how Xenk was almost robotic in his NPC like nature and replies. Since he was a DMPC placed in meant to drive the story forward. Even him walking in a straight line at the beach walking over the rock rather then around it. As he was single focus minded.

    I always thought that time stop accelerates the caster to a very high speed instead of actually stopping the surroundings.

    Brilliant! I was trying to name all the spells myself when I watched it, but I don't know D&D quite that well yet. It would have been nice to see you give the number of unique spells used, rather than find a number that works for a good title, but I suppose that's the algorithm for you.

    During the final encounter Simon casts scorching ray, not firebolt. It fires three rays, all of which unfortunately miss, one with a nat 1 maybe because it looks like one of them glances on Doric.

    Thank you for this. I was wondering what spell had them trapped in the first scene with forge. Trasmute Rock, huh. Would never have guessed.

    I loved this movie. It captured the essence of D&D perfectly.
    I dragged 5 intially reluctant family members & friends along with me & they loved it too!
    I did like how they interpreted the spells in the movie. The Speak With Dead sequence played out brilliantly. Especially the mid-credits scene.
