@davidmorgan6896 Haha, I once played with a 'min/max' guy and introduced him to GURPS. Told him you can't really do that in GURPS as you basically need a well-rounded character to survive. He tried to prove me wrong (we were playing 500 point characters in a sort of Fantasy game, but with super powers or something.. the GM was new...) and he spent all his points in Altered Timerate so he could move really fast... but otherwise, it was just a blacksmith... it was quite silly. But for sure, he never figured out how to cheat the system. I found fun tweaks that made a 1st level character practically unhittable in 2nd AD&D, all within rules. (-2 AC at 1st, with an 18 Dex, Splintmail armor and both proficiencies in single weapon style) this was before armor had a max dex bonus... 😜
@@slaapliedje In Hero System, very similar to GURPS, you can optimise, but it always comes back to bite. You can take advantage of rounding up when buying stats or powers and so be more effective, but that just makes it harder to advance with experience. You could do what your friend did and buy high Speed, so you go first and act more often, but you'll just burn endurance and spend all your time catching your breath. I love point buy systems, but the character you want is alway just out of reach; which is as it should be.
Love that you added extra games on the end! My most anticipated TTRPG is Dolmenwood but I'm also excited about the Stormlight Archives, Daggerheart, and Legend in the Mist. Wilderfeast was definitely on my radar and I had originally planned on backing it but just knew it would be hard to table with the groups I play with now. Great coverage!
I’m excited for my own game, Tales from Myriad to come out! Had a successful Kickstarter last year and it’s close to being finished and shipped to everyone
Really glad you mentioned Break!!, Shadow of the Weird Wizard and Dolmenwood. They all look fantastic from the previews so far. Very much looking forward to seeing if Daggerheart gets a free public demo, like the QuickStart for Candela Obscura. ICON from Massif Press and Tom Bloom (of Lancer fame) looks to have a very cool combination of the social systems from that game and FF Tactics style combat. The Boxed set released last year but the Core Rulebook and Bestiary for Dragonbane is coming out soon. I have been loving running Dragonbane and all other products have feel by the wayside for now.
Dragonbane was my group's favorite game of 2023. We're getting close to finished with the starter campaign and there will be a new campaign boxed set coming to kickstarter sometime this year.
I didn't notice it until i finally broke down and bought the Pendragon Starter Set instead of just ogling it in shelves and took a proper look, but Mark Smylie's art on the box front was instantly recognizable. I loved his Artesia graphic novels' (and, to an extent, its Fuzion-powered ttrpg translation) depictions of medieval fantasy battle and can't think of a better artist to be translating Arthurian legend into art. I hope the core book will be chock full of his work.
TMNT character generation was so cool, I remember making an entire zoo of mutants... anyway I would have thought Adventure Time would be a big one if it doesn't go the way of the Avatar.
Blister Critters! It’s a mutant cartoon animal TTRPG launching during Zinequest! Rad art, Saturday morning cartoon vibes, and a free Quickstart available now!!
The Magnus Archives RPG - coming from Monte Cook Games and Rusty Quill. Uses the Cypher System to bring the world of th4e Magnus Archives podcast to life. I kickstarted it and am itching to have the book in my hands
holy crap, i have a copy of the old TMNT rpg on my shelf. that and TOON were the first rpgs i ever owned, gifts from my older brother when i was a little kid. i had no idea they were remaking it! i might need to get that... for nostalgia if nothing else.
TMNT & other Strangeness is sooo worthy of a re release. Still one of the best rpgs ever. I can't wait to introduce a new generation of players to this classic game.
This was a lot of fun to watch, and I picked up a bunch of playtests and quickstarts off the back of it. Good variety too, not just "AAA" or "AA" productions. Cheers. For my part looking forward to Mythic Bastionland, Arkham Herald, and Fé Borg.
One classic RPG returning in 2024 is the Ars Magica Definitive Edition. It has only just been announced but, like Pendragon, is a GAMA award winner and considered one of the Best 100 Hobby Games of all time. Basically, it did Harry Potter before that was even a thing and still has arguably the best magic system in any RPG. It innovated the Verb + Noun format of spell casting (you can design your own magical spells and styles, even spontaneously in the game) along with a number of other concepts. Its creators went on to create D&D 3rd edition and Vampire: The Masquerade, respectively, and it was an early example of a independently designed, narrative game. It’s new ‘Definitive’ edition looks to be crowdfunded in the fall of 2024, so keep a look out!
Really excited for Wilderfeast, and Pendragon 6E. (Apparently also got a new Warhammer Fantasy rpg to look forward to, since Cubicle 7 is now developing one more focused on the part of the timeline that Warhammer Old World Battles is focusing on. And is gonna be more similar to Imperium Maledictum, instead of like Age of Sigmar: Soulbound, or 40k: Wrath & Glory)
Dolmenwood needs to be on that list - ok I actually watched til the end this time. Nice shout out! Other than that - excited for TMNT because nostalgia!
I for one am looking forward to Tales of The Valiant!!! Yes its powered by a 5e variant, Yes it runs very close to 2014 rules, but it has some new approaches to magic spheres, Talents , Linages and Heritages, and some refreshing class design..
I was genuinely concerned when Dolmenwood and Mythic Bastionland weren’t 1 and 2. On top of that, Knave 2e, and Cairn 2e should be out this year as well.
I would love to suggest Bloat Games Zombies 2nd Edition, And the two versions of the Dark Places & Demogorgons one for the Survive This rules and OSE both are great.
So many cool games coming out that I didn’t know about. There’s a small Sci-Fi/Horror Space Opera Game by a brand new developer that’s in Alpha right now Void Madness to keep an eye on.
Also The Almanac of Sanguine Paths A werewolf themed followup to Dead Letter Society. Tarot driven solo journalling/letter writing RPG where youre a Werewolf (AoSP) or a vampire (DLS)
It's kinda weird to me that you mention two videogame based TTRPGs but don't include the Final Fantasy XIV TTRPG, based on the popular MMORPG, that will come out this year, which should have the by far most fitting source material for an TTRPG
Most games are pretty vague on dates currently so I put links in the description where you can follow any specific ones for more info as and when it comes up!
When you said Monster Hunter I was like, but there's two versions of Monster Hunter International. Then I realized that you meant the video game and not the novels by Larry Correia. The premise of the novels is that monsters (vampires, werewolves, zombies, et cetera) are real and that there's a bounty system on them. MHI hunts the monsters and collects the bounties. There's two officially licensed ways to play, one using the HERO system and the other uses the Savage Worlds Adventure Edition ruleset.
KA Pendragon in beautiful and different. I have Dragonbane and I'm a bit disappointed. There is little of anything. It feels like easy going D&D and is a simplified BRP mechanic. It's nice but...
I am happy for people who are excited for Daggerheart but Candela Obscura really made me question the designers over there. Too half baked and "/shrug idk, the GM can figure it out" style of game for me. Eat the Reich maybe looked cool but I wanted to be able to read it before buying it, seemed like it could go either way for me.
I'm really looking forward to Arkham Herald (reporters against Cthulhu using Carved from Brindlewood rules), and Heroic Deeds (a d12 system with OSR vibes and an intriguing advancement system). I keep looking longingly at Stonetop too.
Being of Backer of Eat The Reich, having read the book and mastered a few games, I can safely say that it was a total bust for me and both of my tables. This is not a TTRPG, this is kinda a streamlined experience where 99% of the situations ends up in the same boring and imbalanced fights and where players, once they understood the rules, can exploit the system in many ways. This game will only appeal to tables where players loves to hear themselves describing their actions with no need for liberty, choice, nor roleplay. The book is cool looking though.
Agreed, it's not a typical TTRPG. More of a story telling game. Like Fiasco. And describing your own actions in an over the top way is basically the whole concept of the game mechanics. I liked it. But it's not for a campaign.
i am a great fan of trying out and supporting new rpgs and like that you promote that but please why do you need to mention D&D that often...we all can live and play without that dinosaur.

Oh, shoot, I didn't know there was a Lovecraftesque 2e coming. That's super exciting! It was a random find at Andy Hopp's Con on the Cob one year, and I've loved since then but never met anyone else who'd heard of it...

Probably won't come out this year, but the KS should... Tainted Grail, based on the highly acclaimed Board game! Cannot wait, I love the lore of the world it is set in.
TMNT & Other Strangeness and The Stormlight Archives are my top two picks from this list. Another I am really looking forward to is Evolved, a supers rpg powered by DCC RPG.
I'm looking forward to seeing Stonetop. I had learned about it somewhat recently, but am eager to see a game that'll in some ways be the upgrade from DW that has been needed for a while. At least it *may* be that. I think either way I'll probably like it. The Diablo and Assassin's Creed RPGs irritate me. They feel like the TTRPG version of themed Monopoly games. I'd be happy to not see them as their own dedicated RPGs. Maybe as system agnostic source books? But yeah, no one actually cares about any of the AC lore, it's mostly garbage and I think most people skip or snooze through the extensive dialog scenes in the video games... because they are dull and needlessly longwinded, and there are like thousands of them in every game.
*raises hand nervously* um... I quite enjoy the lore from the AC franchise, actually - so I'm quite looking forward to the TTRPG, to see what it brings to the table (pun unintended).
Given the trouble Palladium has had with their past reprint Kickstarters, I would not get too excited about TMNT and Other Strangeness. I started to Kickstart it, but backed out when I saw the states of their two previous projects. I am still torn. I definitely wanted the alternate covers and the minis/dice. Break looks great. And I was already looking forward to Triangle Agency. Daggerheart is iffy for me. I was interested at first, and still am about most of the system. But it's initiative rules sound extremely dubious to me, and more so the reasons behind them. Also, hearing Spenser talk about the game gave me the same pause as a few of the entries on this list. If you claim D&D is only for dungeon crawls (or worse attack it), then I have questions on multiple levels. If you have to attack some other system, it doesn't rub me the right way, nor does it make me confident you can stand on your own. And if you claim D&D (even if it 4E or 5E) is only for hack and slash, I wonder how well you read the books and played the system, and what kind of campaigns you've played. All of which makes me wonder what kind of game you have made. I will probably still get Daggerheart when it launches (if only for the 2d12 system). But it will have to do a lot to convince me to table it.
Titan Robotics was very successful and had no problems and the Robotech miniatures game wasn't all Palladium's fault. Plus Paramount and Nickelodeon is staying on top of things to ensure Palladium doesn't mess it up.
TMNT uses the same system it always did, which, even after I mastered it decades ago - was a completely lame system. Nothing about the system enhances gameplay, same category as D&D in that regard, rules built off wargaming and statistics don't do anything good for storytelling and drama.
I came here to negatively comment about all the modern bullshit ttrpgs that would undoubtedly be on this list and then direct people to old school quality instead.. however.. you actually did cover Dolmenwood.. sort of, at least mentioned it. Soo... carry on.
Thanks for the great video! Dolmenwood and Shadow Scar are top of my list this year. Oh, and of course Outsiders. The digital copies delivered yesterday, and I can't wait to dive into the new Trilogy mode.
Now, THIS here is a sign of the TTRPG hobby going through a golden age!
It degenerating into a childish cartoon of what RPG used to be.
@@SteveInTokyo-b8n can you elaborate on why you think that?
