Duane Allman "Skydog" was one of the greatest slide players ever! Unfortunately he died in a motorcycle wreck at 24 years old. He played with Clapton on the Derek and the Dominoes Layla album. He did a lot of sessions work with artists like Aretha Franklin, Wicked Wilson Pickett, etc. He and Erics version of Key to the Highway on the Layla album is a classic.

They're given credit for starting the Southern Rock genre but have done so much more. Duane Allman on the first guitar solo, he's known more for his impeccable slide guitar work and sadly left this world at the age of 24. Dickey Betts is the other guitarist and his solo takes you up to the crescendo. I highly recommend the very first track from this debut album which is a split or / song (medley) that is Don't Want You No More (instrumental) and leads into It's Not My Cross To Bear which is the first time most of the world heard Gregg Allman's vocals and his brother Duane making the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Dive deep!

I think it's a good idea to always listen to the studio version of a song first. In my experience the recorded version of a live performance just usually doesn't stand up to the studio version or the atmosphere of actually being at a concert. "Live at the Fillmore East" is an exception to that generality as is "Waiting for Columbus" by Little Feat which pretty much blew their studio versions out of the water. Highly recommend "Dixie Chicken" off that album.

One of the things that seems to be a problem is when official videos are used--(maybe copyright issues). In 1974, at a Frank Zappa Helsinki concert, in front of many American servicemen, just as Zappa was introducing the song "Montana", (which is about a dental floss rancher), some drunk person in the audience kept yelling for "Whipping Post", which Zappa didn't know. So he just made references to a whipping post in the "Montana" song. All of this was recorded and it's listed on the You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol.2 CD package as "Whipping Floss". I guess Frank later looked the original up, and liked the 11/8 opening time signature, because he used to play it live after that. It's on his 1984 album Them Or Us.

The original group had 2 guitarists, Duane Allman, known for his slide guitar playing, and Dickie Betts. They also had 2 drummers. Their big album was the double live one from the Fillmore East. They were often termed a "jam band" because live they would use the songs for extended solo vehicles. For example, this song is over 22 minutes on the Fillmore album. When Eric Clapton was in Florida recording the Derek and the Dominos Layla album, he went to an Allman Bros. concert, and ended up inviting Duane to be on the album, so Duane's slide guitar plays a big role on that album. Four months after the Fillmore concerts Duane died in a motor cycle accident, so that album is considered the definitive statement of the original lineup. You mentioned the more countryish "Ramblin' Man". That was written and sung by the other guitarist, Dickie Betts. Betts also wrote the more jazz influenced instrumental "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed", which is about 13 min. on the Fillmore album. I really like a later incarnation of the band featuring Derek Trucks (nephew of drummer Butch Trucks) on slide guitar, and Warren Haynes on the other guitar. Derek would also tour in Clapton's band and they would play the old Derek and the Dominos material with Derek playing Duane's slide parts. B.B.King called Derek the best slide player he had ever seen. See the 2002 Allman Bros. at the Beacon Theatre on TH-cam for a good example of that lineup.

Their first album that Whipping Post is on came out in November of 1969, Idlewood South followed in 1970. They had a small, but hardcore fan base but all of that changed in the fall of 1971 when their live double album, Live at the Fillmore East came out and put them on the map and is still considered one of the finest live albums of all time. Sadly, just when the Allmans were taking off, Duane Allman, the leader of the group along with younger brother singer/songwriter/organist Gregg, died shortly after its release in October of 1971. They had already done 3 tracks with Duane for their next album Eat a Peach, so they turned it into a Duane tribute double album. The first side is the only side without Duane, as three great new songs written by Gregg and remaining guitarist Dickey Betts. The 3rd side is the side with the 3 tracks with Duane and they had two live tracks that he played on. Sides 2 and 4 is the Mountain Jam where Daune Allman and the band flex their jamming muscles in one of the longest jams on record. The one that took the death of Duane very hard was Berry Oakley who began drinking heavily and ultimately died a year later in a motorcycle accident like Duane not far away from the original fatal crash. Even though Berry was only on a couple of songs on their next album Brothers and Sisters which despite all of the odds, became a huge hit. Dickey was becoming almost as good a writer as Gregg and was now the sole guitarist. They decided Duane couldn't be replaced so they added pianist extraordinaire Chuck Leavell and Dickey was starting to add a country element to rock/blues/jazz fusion.

The album you’re grabbing the song from is a more recent compilation album.

One of the truly great American bands overflowing with continuous inspiration. This original band formulation was very short lived very much in same way as Hendrix. But by God did they burn brightly!! This whole debut album I would say was equally inspired as the Doors first offering and would be ideally suited for Patreon supporters. The whole album hangs together in completeness without a weak track. The first song throws down the gauntlet with that great 60s outgoing energy and demands your attention! What's so totally apparent is that the band's identity was fully formed right from this beginning.
Fifty years later this band is still greatly admired and loved. They were a powerhouse group that all their intensity was contained within an emotional context that was smartly artistic. ABB was a very classy outfit that played with finesse and band unity (oneness) that you'll hear in Marley music such as "Could You Be Loved." The members were Duane Allman on lead slide guitar, Dickey Betts composer, usually backing vocals and either lead guitar or rhythm depending what the song called for, Berry Oakley bass, Gregg Allman primary vocalist, composer, organ and sometimes acoustic guitar, Butch Trucks (AKA affectionately as Freight Train due to his rock solid power) drums and Jaimoe on percussion. Collectively they released only three albums and in my view all are beautiful.
As a band they played blues because Gregg was a born bluesman, but they also were jammers who loved jazz improvisation which is especially obvious "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" a total classic. You may find as you go about your daily life the groove energy of that song is comfortably playing in your head and that's alright. They also did country flavored songs which were of the smart variety. And, last but but least, they rocked big time.
Following the live "At Fillmore East", not only was the public blown away by this release but all the musicians were too. Immediately Duane became the hottest session player around. He was on albums by Aretha Franklin, King Curtis, Boz Scaggs, Derek and the Dominos, Wilson Pickett who dubbed him Skydog. Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident while driving too fast he slammed into a flatbed truck that unexpectedly stopped in an intersection. Six months later Berry Oakley died in the same way.
As you can hear from the opening notes of this track, Berry was also a very gifted player. Bassist Oteil Burbridge from Dead and Company described him in one word: "revolutionary." That's because at times like all great bassists, they'll assume a lead-like role when the music called for it. That's why the listener would be given the impression of three guitars coming at them every now and then. It's interesting to note that Berry was a guitarist before he discovered that his true calling was bass.
Along with the Yes (3rd), ABB (Fillmore East) both attracted my complete instantaneous addictive interest. Although they musically were quite different what they shared in common was greatness. And I still see them that way, nothing has dimmed their brilliance.
Nick and Lex I hope you see this essay. I won't be doing another one. If my ABB prodding seemed to be about me, it really was all about turning you on because that's who I am. This was a giant American band like Doors, Dan, Feat and not to be missed!

Duane and Gregg Allman founded the band. Duane, one of the guitar players along with Dicky Betts, was killed in a car crash in 1972 as they were finishing up recording their third studio album, Eat A Peach. Then a year later Berry Oakley, the bass player, was also killed in a motorcycle crash.

The Allmans are a VERY DEEP rabbit hole, the band went from 1969 through 2016/17 in one form or another. Melissa, the 1st song Gregg ever wrote, is one of the biggest most widely known songs ( I named my youngest after it!)

My all-time favorite band. I saw them live at least 15-20 times and they were always fantastic, in all of their line ups (I actually cried the day Greg died a few years ago). Someone described them as a jazz band disguised as a blues band disguised as a southern rock band. I'd recommend listening to "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" from Idlewild South and then the incredible live version from Fillmore East.

Try "Revival" the first cut from the Idlewild South album and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" instrumental from same album. Two guitars, Duane Allman and Dickie Betts, Greg Allman keyboards, Berry Oakley bass, and dual drummers Jai Johanny Johnson and Butch Trucks. The Fillmore East Album is considered by many as the greatest live concert album ever. It has much longer versions of the studio songs.

I saw them at The Whiskey a month before Duane died.
A year later, bassist Berry Oakley had an motorcycle accident only 5 blocks from where Duane died. Berry went home but died of internal injuries a few hours after the accident.

Great reaction. I understand why you wanna cover the studio versions first. My first exposure to the Allman Brothers was live at the Fillmore East. It is such an amazing live album. Really shows their musicianship and a great recording for the time. It’s so SOLID Lots of good stuff in the catalog. In memory of Elizabeth Reed is a great instrumental as well as Jessica. A tangential southern rock fusion group you could look into would be Sea Level. Named after the pianist Chuck Levall who is a smoking hot piano player who played the great piano on the Alman Brothers, Brothers and Sisters album. The most commercial hit was Living in a Dream. They also shared the same drummer for a while. Another cool song you would like would be Thats your Secret.

Congrats! You just discovered the inventors of what quickly came to be called "southern rock". With two great guitarists,Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, Duane's brother Gregg on keyboards and vocals and two drummers to really drive their sound they defined the new genre. And though they stayed in that lane a lot, when they strayed out of it they showed great range. Like the following, "In memory of Elizabeth Reed". One day walking through a cemetery they saw a very old gravestone with the name Elizabeth Reed. So they decided to dedicate this composition to her.

A masterpiece by top musicians and artists, you owe it to yourselves to listen to their live album "At Fillmore East" recorded in March 1971 as it will blow you away! The live video for "Whipping Post" that you should watch is the11 minutes long (search for: The Allman Brothers Band - Whipping Post - 9/23/1970 - Fillmore East (Official)) and has Duane Allman on guitar so you can see his virtuoso playing; he passed away a year later several months after the March 1971 live Fillmore recording. The Fillmore East was a famous NYC concert venue that only held 2600 fans and had excellent acoustics. I saw the Allman Brothers there in 1969 as a warm up band for BST and have the playbill that the Fillmore used to give out at each show.
They deserve a deep dive and have a huge repertoire of great music.

Duane "Skydog" Allman, gone at 24! Let that sink in for a minute........He had already put in studio time with Wilson Pickett, King Curtis, Boz Skaggs, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Mann, Clarence Carter, Percy Sledge, etc. in Muscle Shoals, sat in with Eric Clapton and company on the iconic "Layla" album by Derek and the Dominos, Recorded The Allman Brothers Band, Idlewild South, Live at Fillmore East, and part of what would become Eat a Peach albums, and toured extensively. I've been listening since the first release and it's still hard to fathom! Nick, you're a guitar guy, you will do well to consume as much Duane and Dickey as possible! The Fillmore East album will blow your guitar mind! Duane wasn't a flashy, slasher, he had a magical touch, especially with the slide, and was a very nuanced player. RIP to absolutely one of my favorite bands, and Greg, Duane, Berry, Butch, and Lamar. Thanks for everything boys! Since you guys are "singles" oriented for the channel, I'd suggest "Dreams" "Don't Want You No More/It's Not My Cross to Bear" from the first album, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" "Hot Lanta" "Stormy Monday" and "Statesboro Blues" from Fillmore, "Melissa" "Blue Sky" (one of the most joyful songs ever, written and sung by Dickey), "One Way Out", "Ain't Waisting Time No More", and "Les Brers in A Minor" from Eat a Peach, and "Revival" "Please Call Home" from Idlewild South. So many more great tunes!

Thank you soooooooo much for doing the studio first, then the live. You are the ONLY reactors that seems to understand the importance of this. I liken it to eating German Chocolate cake with coconut pecan frosting or Pecan Pie (if you don't like these things, substitute your own loves here) for every meal. Sure, it's awesome art first, or well, ok, all the time 👍😊😉, but then you never learn to appreciate regular food or cake as it's just not as good ... and then, there are those bands who either, don't do live versions well (or as well) as in the studio, and that can turn you off to an otherwise great band. Kudos upon kudos for doing this the right way !!!

you mention going back to the 60s. Cream (LIVE Cream!), Procol Harum, Traffic, the Zombies, early Jethro Tull, the Yardbirds, early Pink Floyd, the Moody Blues (you've done). Just remember, if it's before 1967, chances are they are only 3 minute pop songs that have to fit 45 rpm singles, so you won't get to stretch out. I would suggest Hendrix OF COURSE, but you'll get the videos taken down, unfortunately.

Agreed! I don't even think I'd ever heard the word "fusion" in relation to music at the time of the ABB's early days. They did love jazz music, but that's as close as I can come to "fusion".
