Great reveal! The Doobies did not become famous when Michael McDonald joined the band. They were already huge, with multiple hit songs, including this one, which is more swampy than their other early hits. You should definitely react to more of the same, like "Listen To the Music" "China Grove" "Jesus Is Just Alright" or "Long Train Running," all classic Doobies.

  • @steveperelli3305

You guys are so entertaining. FYI the singer song writer here is Pat Simmons. He as well as Tom Johnston, both guitar players, write and sing. Their music is so versatile. Long train running is a great one to get your reaction to. BTW Pat and Tom are Doobie founding members. MM filled in for awhile during Tom Johnston’s temporary leave of absence. They still tour today. Another rabbit hole??

Saw them in 2011 and is still the most entertaining show I have been to. When they had done a few encores people began leaving but we noticed that the Doobies were hanging around the side of the stage, slightly out of sight. So we went up and they were waiting to talk to anyone who came up to them. Amazing guys and great fun to listen to. No pretensions at all, just loved being appreciated.

The Tom Johnson era of the Doobie Brothers is well worth exploring. Even this track isn’t all that much like the rest of their material. But they had a long roll of great albums before Michael McDonald.

The band at this time consisted of Tom Johnston: guitar, Pat Simmons: guitar, Tiran Porter: bass, John Hartman, drums, and Michael Hossack: drums (yes, the Doobies had two drummers!!). Two additional musicians who worked on this album would later become full-fledged members: Keith Knudsen and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter(who was formerly of Steely Dan).

The personel in Steely Dan and the Doobie Bros were ALL Los Angeles studio musicians. They all played (usually uncredited) on many songs by many artists. Many of them are multi instrument players.
They ALL came to L.A. from different places. Mostly NY and East Coast.

I'd like to suggest another band from that era, The Atlanta Rythm Section. They were a really talented southern blues rock band that fits in well with the Doobies, Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers. "Spooky" "Imaginary Lover" "Not Gonna Let it Bother Me Tonight" "Champagne Jam" are some of their hits.

Pre MM Doobies was a pretty wonderful time. I love most of the MM Doobies stuff too but they are so distinct from each other IMO. Black Water is super atmospheric. My favourite pre MM song would be "Natural Thing". Great choice for this video. And when i describe this type of music, I say "music from the country" as opposed to "country music". It sounds like it comes from the land.

The Doobies has many hits prior to Michael. A lot of people really reacted negatively to the introduction of Michael McDonald. I'd say both lineups were great in different ways, unlike Chicago, which became schlockmeisters after Kath.

    • @chuckhutton5087
      @chuckhutton5087 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Lol!! “schlockmeisters”. Pretty harsh. True, Chicago did become rather sappy following Terry Kath’s death. My biggest complaint about post - Kath Chicago is the horns were not as prominent during Bill Champlin era. Peter Cetera leaving the group in ‘85 to go solo was a major setback, as bassist Jason Scheff is very good but very different than Pete.

Interesting that you never heard early Doobies -- "Black Water" was a big hit on the radio, and so were "Listen To The Music" and "China Grove". "Another Park Another Sunday" was another Tom Johnston hit, before he had to leave the band (health reasons it seems). There are lots of other wonderful Doobie/Johnston songs, too -- I'm especially fond of "South City Midnight Lady" -- it would be difficult to find a more enchanting and exquisite Doobies tune.

I thought you would guess who the band was by the harmonies....yes....The Doobie Brothers.....Hhahahahaha......the look of shock on your face was "Classic!!!!!" lol

Both are great, but the Tom Johnston era is more rocking which is my favorite. When I was a kid my dad played the Doobie's album "The Captain & Me" all the time and I still enjoy it. So many options with this band, and if you follow through the albums you can hear them adapt every couple years and expand/differentiate their sound, especially when Michael McDonald joined. This particular album is a banger, start to finish. The one before it, "Toulouse Street," is another. So many great rockin' hits, and quite a few under-the-radar deeper tracks that are worth a reaction. And the record AFTER this one, "The Captain And Me" is arguably their best, most consistent album, and with four hit songs on it. Here are way too many suggestions, more or less in chronological order:
Listen To The Music, Toulouse Street, Disciple, Song to See You Through, Spirit, Eyes of Silver, Road Angel, You Just Can't Stop It, Down In the Track, Another Park Another Sunday, China Grove, Long Train Runnin', Dark Eyed Cajun Woman, Clear As the Driven Snow, Without You, The Captain and Me, Take Me in Your Arms, Wheels of Fortune, Takin' It To the Streets, For Someone Special, It Keeps You Runnin', Turn It Loose....
that's about where I personally began to lose interest. I missed Tom Johnston's chemistry with Patrick Simmons too much.

The short story - Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons founded the Doobie Brothers. Had a number of really big hits in the early part of the 70's (Listen to the Music, Long Training Running, etc.). Johnston got sick and had to sit out a tour, and Michael McDonald was recruited to fill in. When it became clear that Johnston wouldn't be able to return, McDonald became a permanent member. He brought his own unique sound to the band, and a whole new era of hits. But the band was very successful before he came along.
Eventually, the band split up. For various reunions, it was primarily Johnston and Simmons, but McDonald still joins them, and in fact, all three are touring this summer as an anniversary celebration.
I highly recommend reading "Long Train Running", by Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons. It's a great retelling of the Doobies' story.
Next up, you should listen to some of those early hit records. Start with their first smash, Listen to the Music.

That was fun watching Nick try to guess. The Doobie Brothers music before Mike Mc is a whole different animal. And that tune is different than their other great music. Very versatile band. Compare the songs Rocking Down the Highway, or Long Train Running style to Cheat the Hangman or Toulouse Street and you'll understand. Black Water is from my favorite album What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, and it doesn't sound anything like the other songs on it. Song to See You Through is my favorite track.

This was fun. I had a feeling Nick was going to guess Little Feat. Long Train Runnin' is (I think) an even better song and completely different. The studio version is great but there's also a live video performance that's amazing, the band onstage is so tight.

That whole album is great probably my Favorite before Michael McDonald joined the band. Another Park Another Sunday, Daughter’s of the Sea, Eyes of Silver give you quite a taste of the variety they always brought to the table.

Nice reaction. It's not that I disliked the MM-era Doobies, but I definitely preferred the original Tom Johnston Doobies, and missed them greatly when they became little more than MM's backup band. You should absolutely do more of the "real" Doobie Brothers... there's lots of great stuff to discover.

Black Water was from the Doobies 4th studio album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, with the original band lineup:
Patrick Simmons - composer, acoustic guitars, lead vocals
    Tom Johnston - backing vocals[19]
Tiran Porter - bass guitar, backing vocals
Keith Knudsen - backing vocals, dubbed-in drums
    John Hartman - drums
Written & Sung by Patrick Simmons (never left the band) and two albums before Michael McDonald would join the group (following Skunk Baxter who joined from Steely Dan on the album after this one - Stampede).
Novi Novog played the Viola on this track - Not a member of the group but also played on the song "Takin' it to the Streets for the Doobies and played as a session player with as wide a variation as Bonnie Raitt - Prince - Michael Jackson & Frank Zappa!
She was part of the group "Chunky, Novi & Ernie" (2 albums -73 & 77)

That was a fun reaction. I knew Nick would not guess the band. The original Doobie Brothers sound so different. I've seen the Doobie Brothers 4 times live. All were pre MM. I loved the early Doobie Brothers. They have 5 great albums prior to MM. Every album has great songs on them. I would try "Listen To The Music" next. It's from their second album Tolouse Street and was a big hit. The song Tolouse Street is a great song as well. They were very versatile in their original music. Not just one specific sound. Another possible rabbit hole for you. :)

Growing up in the 70's the Doobies (pre-Mike) are the soundtrack of our lives. This album - What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, The Captain And Me, Toulouse Street, The Doobie Brothers, and Stampede (the first Doobies album with Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of Steely Dan fame), are all amazing.

@@bobhalvorson4374 I'm a fan of MM for his backup vox/harmony work with Steely Dan, but tire quickly of his lead vocals. I know that's not the most popular sentiment, but that's where I'm at. There's just something so personal about those early Doobies tracks. They always conjure memories of good friends, girlfriends, good times, and important events of our teenage years.

I really love this first era of the Doobie Brothers. The bluesy, "grittier" style is more appealing to mean, less pop although I really like McDonalds voice.
Try live "Jesus is Just Alright", ton of jam.

Don't feel bad but she got you. My friend some times does this to me for a while. Cause i'm a music lover of music/ex d.j. Sometimes he cheats by giving some obscure song that didn't make the top 40 charts or figure out a genre that i don't have history with, but it's fun cause he does stump me often. He's from Chi town & i'm from MN.

This is before Michael McDonald, put Pat Simmons is singing most of this song who was still in the band after Michael Mcdonald joined. Tom Johnson did most of the lead vocals before he left and Michael joined. Current the band is doing show with both Tom and Michael. A friend saw them in Vegas last week.

That was Pat Simmons in vocals, Tom Johnson was the main vocalist for the first 5 records. Michael McDonald cane on basically on the 5th album tour & sang on the 6th album “Takin it to the Streets “ because of Tom’s illness at the time

The Doobie Brothers are a bit like Genesis and Chicago in that they had very distinctly different eras in the life of the band. The Doobies had the Tom Johnston then the Michael McDonald eras, Chicago had the with Terry Kath then after Terry Kath eras and Genesis had their prog years with Peter Gabriel, their prog years with Phil Collins and their pop/rock years with Phil Collins. I can't think of any other bands like that but surely there must be some!

This one was an awful lot of fun to watch with Lex singing along and Nick wondering how the heck she knew the song so well and the guessing game at the end. And I have to admit, Doobies are a neglected band for me and you've got me thinking I'll be picking up some albums to try deep cuts and different line ups. I grew up hearing this song too, BTW. I was in 6th grade when it came out.

Ah I needed this one today, had a lingering bad mood from an aggravating conversation hours ago, and the song tore a bunch of it away - Used to hear it on classic rock and oldies stations all the time but it's got to have been a few years.
This is the first I've ever heard a reactor mention Little Feat - their "Waiting For Columbus" double-live album has been a favorite for... damn, 30 years. Guess I'm off to search the channel and see what you've done of theirs.

The musicians of the Doobie Brothers are more than competent and creative. Michael's addition only changed their musical direction, not their excellence.
They had several hits before Michael joined them, though people now don't realize that.
    Have a great day!

It's so cool watching people discovering this music for the first time. I've been listening to the Doobies since their first radio hit which was Listen To The Music (ironic) in 70 or 71 and I loved them from the start. They have gone through many changes since their first lineup but many of the original members are still around. You really need to go back to the beginning because through all the changes the music has maintained a high level and all these songs that I've heard a million times on the radio still sound as fresh today as they did 50 years ago.
