Jaimoe and Butch Trucks immediately developed a unique relationship where the two of them became like one giant drummer-not because they played so alike, but the because they played so differently, and yet, in sync. Trucks was the more standard time keeper, driving the band with a thumping pulse, while Jaimoe exploded all around him, adding jazz swing and fascinating accents.

The lead band member was Duane Allman, guitarist with purple shirt and long blonde hair. He taught everyone of that time period how to play the slide. His brother, singer, organ, keyboards, is his younger brother Gregg. Gregg wrote this song when he was 18 or 19 years old.
Unfortunately, about a year or two after this album was released - Duane Allmann, guitarist, and leader of band (blonde hair/purple shirt) was killed in a motorcycle accident.
The band would continue on for many years. They would play many songs that weren’t jams - ballads, a variety. Probably one of the best live bands ever. Gregg Almann, has a beautiful song, Melissa, a ballad. You should take a listen. However, I don’t believe he ever recovered from his older brother’s death.
They were all the Almann Brothers - not just the two biological brothers.

@@AirplayBeats Duane Allman was asked why he had 2 drummers and he said, 'if James Brown can have two drummers so can I.' He also said, " We have an organ player, 2 drummers and 3 guitars, one big guitar and two little ones. Now all we need is a Bass player.
Gregg Allman has been called the Best White Blues singer ever. You never got the same show twice. If the band played two sets in a day you could go and hear them in the morning and come back at night and hear a different set. They would pick the songs as they went to jam on. They could play 'Statesboro Blues' for 5 minutes to lead off in the morning, then lead off the night session with a 15 minute jam session. During the concerts at Fillmore East 1971, they played this song for almost 23 minutes. They would finish that with a show stopping finish then launch into a 33 minute jam around the Donovan song , 'First There Is A Mountain'. They may play for an hour and a half to two hours one night then the next night play for 4 hours. They would play the same songs but in a totally different way. They were the best ever. Duane was the leader and driving force of the group. They weren't the same until 2004 when Warren Haynes from 'Government Mule' and Derek Trucks who took over them mantle of best slide guitarist ever from Duane. They never could really replace Barry Oakley on bass who died a year later than Duane on a parallel street less than a half mile from where Duane died. Oteil Burbridge took over as Bass player.
This was played in 12/8 time.

(On the keyboard) Greg Allman's voice, at age 22, was iconic southern rock. It embodied soul, pain, and resignation. a sound well beyond his years. His brother Duane (on lead guitar) echoed those emotions in his solos. (Not unlike how Queen guitarist Brian May echoed Freddie Mercury's voice). Audiences loved the long jams they did. The energy was driven by the 2 drummers. I was 18 when I first heard them, and was a huge fan. I still like the studio version of Whipping Post.

Yes - two drummers. They are playing different things. Jaimoe and Butch make it look easy, right? Two lead guitars. Both concepts unheard of at the time. Both the result of the vision of Duane Allman.
The length is nothing compared to one of the Mountain Jams. The time spent on any of those is well-worth it, but pee before you sit down to listen. :)
Thank you for your recognition of Berry Oakley, the bass player. He never got the recognition he deserved. Berry really died when Duane did. He just walked around for a year longer.
The vocalist is Gregg Allman, Duane Allman's little brother. Duane is the blond lead guitarist.
It's wonderful to see people who weren't around when the Allman Brothers came out giving them their props. Thank you for doing your part to turn new generations onto music that will enrich their lives.

I grew up in this time and watched these guys practice at a neighbor of my best friends house for the county fair in Alabama where they were staying for the weekend. There music took me on a path of lynyrd skynyrd, SRV, BBKING, zztop, Janis Joplin and the Doogie Brothers just to name a few . I absolutely believe the southern United States has the most diverse music with southern rocknroll . GREG ALLMAN IS THE LEAD SINGER.

Butch Trucks and Jaimo Johanson, one was playing the 2-4 the other the 3, they were so comfortable with each other they swapped, easily. Jaimo was the touring drummer for Otis Redding. Duane Allman, Dickey Betts both lead guitar. Duane and Jaimo met when they were doing session work in Muscle Shoals at Fame Recording Studio in 1968-69.
Greg Allman is singer, his brother Duane is on the lead guitar(bottle neck slide) Dicky Betts other lead, Barry Oakley on-bass!
They did twenty minute jams live!
    Nobody did it better! Synchronized!
I had the pleasure of seeing this band in different variations, they all worked even after losing Duane and Barry, a year apart… they made music for 45 years… I was lucky to personally know most of these guys except Duane and Barry.

The Allman Brothers were an absolutely fantastic and they have a ton of great songs in various styles. They were considered a "Southern rock" band, but they had a lot of blues, R&B, soul and jazz influences. The singer/keyboardist is Gregg Allman, who IMO had one of the greatest blues-rock voices in his prime. The guitarist immediately to the right of the keyboards is Gregg's brother, Duane Allman, who was one of the best slide players in the history of rock/blues (he also did session guitar work for King Curtis, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Mann, Wilson Pickett, and Boz Scaggs and he was a part of Derek and the Dominos). Unfortunately, he died at 24 y/o in a motorcycle accident. The bassist is Berry Oakley, who also died in a motorcycle accident at 24 y/o about a year after Duane and almost at the same location. The second guitarist is Dickey Betts, who was also a great player and songwriter, and the two killer drummers are Butch Trucks and Jaimoe. If you want to hear an incredible current slide guitarist, you should check out Derek Trucks (Butch Trucks nephew). He currently plays in a band with his wife, Susan Tedeschi (fantastic blues singer), called The Tedeschi-Trucks Band.

BTW, the beginning of the song with the cool bass riff and building guitar and keyboard parts is in 11/8 time, along with the similar sections between the choruses and verses, and then it goes into straight 4/4 time for the verses and chorus.

The chorus is written in 11/8 time, but the verses are written in 12/8. When asked by American Songwriter magazine how he came to compose such songs with progressions that are definitely nothing resembling blues or typical rock and roll, Allman replied that he's not entirely sure. "Man, I just stumbled onto 'em," he said. "I really didn't know exactly what I was doing, I just did it. My brother had to tell me that 'Whipping Post' was in 11/4 time; I had no idea." >>

People sat down through many concerts back in the day. Audiences gave respect to major bands because it's a show...not a party. Everybody wants to witness these incredible performances. There were also concerts where people stood up from their seats. However the attention was always on the talent/ performance...not audience participation.

You will never be able to appreciate this band unless you first allow yourself to listen to their music all the way through a song. It’s all one work from beginning to end, you don’t stop this frame to frame and catch their magic. They are are a drum band - that mastered the use of crescendo in creating their music. That is to say that their drummers laid down the pace for their music allowing it to build for their lead instruments, taking their listeners on a musical journey through their instrumentals in a way that is quite unique from anything else you will find. So, allow yourself to take the trip, and you will discover what a treasure they truly were.

My girlfriend and I saw Greg Allman [ with his own band ] sometime in the 90's. In a relatively small auditorium. His voice was mind-blowing. Accurate and powerful.
The Allman Brothers were an amazing band. I don't want to say they are underrated because those in the know KNOW The Allman Brothers. Supremely talented. Tons of great songs. Their album "Eat A Peach" is iconic. A double album full of good songs. "Blue Sky" is one of them, and it is magical. One of the best guitar solos ever recorded. And it is a double guitar solo. Check it out.

Back in the old days, when I was still a kid, the older venues still had seating for rock concerts, a hold over from orchestral concerts, this was true at least until 1976, mostly for standing on by then, but, by 1977 very few venues had chairs as they usually started to get thrown around near the end of the concerts.

At most venues the audience wasn’t allowed to stand or dance, unless it was a open floor club. Can you imagine being there and riding that performance. Yes they jammed and they drove the audience in to ecstatic exhaustion. It’s criminal that the young don’t have music venues the way we did. You could catch a music act or two in every town any night of the week.

Duane Allman camped out at Muscle Shoals studios in Alabama in 1969, hoping to get hired as a session musician. One day, Wilson Pickett showed up to record, and since the local diner was not hip to blacks or hippies, Wilson and Duane stayed back for lunch and Duane showed him some "Hey Jude" on guitar, and then he ended up recording it with him the next day. He found his way in, and in the process was discovered, told to start a band, and created Southern Rock, during that lunch break.
