Windows 7 was released in October of 2009. Back then the world of computers was different and some would argue - better. 13 years later now that security support is no longer there is Windows 7 safe to use today?

Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 are dead operating systems now, and Windows 10 is falling into that same category on October 14th, 2025, I am not saying that Windows 7 in that time frame was a bad operating system, I use to love Windows 7, but times have changed, the recommended operating system now is Windows 11.

I'm still using Windows 7 and everything works flawlessly, plays all the games and runs all software I need it to. I really don't want to upgrade to 10 or 11 - they're just so anti-user and privacy. In fact, I've been using this same installation of 7 since 2015. Rock-solid.

I can reboot my *2011* W7 laptop and have a browser open in 60-90 seconds. My 3 yr old W10 laptop is up to about 5 minutes now. When I first got it that process took about 30 seconds. With *every system update* it has gotten slower. As I mentioned in another post, it's ridiculous to have to install an entire new operating system every 6-12 months when you can't update the drivers from the computer manufacturers website.

This is one of the reasons why i use Windows 7, for example, Windows 10-11 telemetry, you got a lot of disk usage, i use hdd, and ssd. I don't want to degrade it, when i tried Windows 10 on this system, my hdd became an unstoppable sound generator.
So, you know, "Security", everything can be secured by users, we do not need windows updates. Windows 7 With only Service Pack 1, working without any bugs.
When i read a lot of answer about "Why do you use windows 7 in 2023?!" I feel confused, why other people want to change my choice, and others choice? For example, 4 years ago, every day a guy not stopped telling me "Update to windows 10, because Windows 7 is..." I asked to stop, he didn't stopped it. Probably it just microsoft hive mind category.

I am writing this comment on my main Windows 7 PC which is my daily driver. This installation was originally a fresh Windows 2000, upgraded to Windows XP, upgraded to Windows 7. Basically, the same installation for the past 20 years. Can it be used safely in 2023? Yes, but it requires working behind a few layers of security like disabling features in the registry, disabling ALL Microsoft update access, and installing EVERYTHING in offline mode. The other 9 PCs in my office all run Linux Mint, and for what it's worth, Mint is as easy to use as Windows 7 with the added bonus of better security. You're asking why I stay with Windows 7? Investment is why. Over 20 years, I've invested in a ton of software at full retail price. Much of it will no longer install on Windows 10 as registration servers are no longer online. Much of that software is coding and graphical development apps that provide functions that are not available in modern counterparts. Windows 7 is the solution.

Windows 7 can be made to run "fine" on modern 2023 hardware, which would be interesting to see a video about. The only caveat in running a dual-boot Win7/Win10 machine (on an Intel 10th gen machine) is: CSM=enabled for Win7 to boot to desktop. Win7 can be installed on a modern system with AHCI mode & GPT formatted SSD & with CSM=disabled, but the final boot to desktop will require switching the bios setup to CSM=enabled. Also: if using an official Win7 installation disc, may require using a PS/2 mouse, until the correct USB driver can get installed.

Because I love Windows 7 for gaming! It come with two 1 TB Seagate hard drive (Advanced Format = AF) and it's CMR types. I did upgraded RAM to 16 GB DDR3 @ 1600 MHz from 8 GB DDR3 @ 1600 MHz and added Western Digital Blue 6 TB hard drive (CMR type) SATA for to put a lot of PC games on there. Finally play Starcraft 2 and SpellForce 3 (with modded to remove few useless effect like fogs, blur to increase FPS speed up gain about 10 - 15 FPS total about between 30 FPS - 45 FPS on Intel Core i7 3770 @ 3.4 GHz, 16 GB RAM DDR3 @ 1600 MHz with Nvidia GT 630 (Kepler type) with 2 GB DDR3 VRAM. Windows 7 rocking and very solid operating so far for 10 years! No motherboard failure, No GPU failure, No RAM failure, No Hard drive failure and No Power supply failure yet!!! If something go gone wrong then I know to fix is to replace hardware parts on myself. Powerful HP desktop computer model name is H8-1360T and it's beast gaming computer used low power without overclock so far! Hooray!!! 👍
Because Windows 7 and Windows XP are real sister operating system which are best in the world!🤩
I had old DELL computers with Windows XP used for gaming and love it. I played Starcraft, Warcraft 3, Age of Empire 2 and 3, SpellForce 1 to 2, Armies of Exigo, Age of Mythology and Stronghold games.
I had MSI laptop come with Windows 10 (I disabled auto update with program name is StopUpdates10 to prevent any problems also it will work for Windows 11 and later to block auto Window updates) and play Nintendo Switch games on Yuzu emulator and Ryujinx emulator on Nvidia RTX 3060 and running amazing smooth. Awesome!
I did try Linux Mint running on my Windows 7 used VMware Workstation Pro program without change operating system. I love Linux Mint look similar to Windows XP and 7.
If Microsoft company doing a lot of worse in later new operating system then I will never touch it and will going to Linux Mint for everyday to use on internet in near future. Cheers

Windows 7 is by far in my opinion the best OS that microsoft ever released and theres a reason its still being used today despite support ending in 2020. Its simple and comes with none of the spyware or bloat that was introduced in 10 and 11. 7 was my main OS up until microsoft pulled the plug on it. I have to use win 10 for work now but i use kubuntu linux as my personal main OS.
Despite win 7 being so good, i cannot really justify using it in 2023/2024 due to their not being any official security pstches for many years now. I also know that 2024 will be the last year of support for several programs including firefox and also for any gamers out there, valve is also cutting windows 7 steam support in 2024 as well.
Despite how brilliant this OS has been and how its held up over the years, more and more programs are going to continue ending support therefore eventually upgrading to 10 and 11 will be essential to keep using your pc's. I do agree that MS Windows 7 was the best OS they ever made. I still have a 2nd gen i7 running this OS and it will continue as long as I have a supported anti-virus. I get the Windows update problem and raise you the Intel CPU flaws. The funny part was MS Windows 10, which chased us into Linux and upgrades to AMD based systems. Our biggest problem was locating printers and scanners with Linux support. Lucky timing there, as we're still printing and running Linux (MINT /Cinnamon) all these years onward. While I will happily help friends get into Linux, I won't tell you or anyone else that they have to move to Linux, as there are way too many variables to each individual situation that will spell success or failure with Linux.

Its still usable and most Linux operating systems were too slow on this so I just installed Windows 7 which seems to run nice and snappy and I can run some Windows apps. I don't really need the internet much but its still ok for light basic browsing occasionally. I can run MS office and clamshell anti-virus. I'm not going to be keeping any personal information on this or using it on social media or anything like that so security isn't a concern for this netbook but I do plan on installing TinyCore Linux on another partition of the drive. However, I found a PERFECT solution. I found WinAllBack. It makes Win11 look and work very much like Win7. If it weren't for this software, I probably would have gone to a Win7 theme software. However, the theme software(s) that I tried didn't change how the start menu works as much or the Win7's style of things like the control panel and system properties. I still would prefer true Win7 on my new hardware, but this software gets me as close to my favorite OS that I can get.

@@vengeance2825 0patch is a patching tool which runs and it patches bugs etc and loopholes in the system, I got it running on 3 x 64 bit win 7 pro systems and its great, dont go for the free version but go for the professional one, and you need to buy one for each system but they are very cheap
