    There's actually a feature on Nintendo Switch to have a slight joycon input even when you don't touch the joycon. This feature also called "joycon drift" forces your character to keep moving and prevent screen burn.

    As an OLED TV owner for the last 5 years, burn in is much less of a concern than people think. I almost exclusively game on my TV and it has about 4500 hours of usage with zero noticeable panel uniformity issues. Newer OLEDs are significantly better at mitigating burn in than my 2016 model, so if mine is safe, a new one will do even better.

    • @armeniancrusader301
      @armeniancrusader301 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Yes but it’s still a risk. OLEDs can differ from each other, one can get burn in very soon and the other won’t get burn in for like the next 7 years and so on. I mean there is MiniLED technology now wich is as great as OLED (you gotta look how many zones the TV has though, the more the better)
      Samsung has released their new Neo QLED line up (wich has been here since like mid-late 2020 I don’t remember) of 4K and 8K TVs wich can get very deep blacks and realistic colors like OLED TVs but don‘t have the huge cons that OLEDs have such as burn in and lower brightness.

    • @mazda9624
      @mazda9624 2 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      @@armeniancrusader301 As a TV salesman, I can tell you that the Neo QLED TVs have a long ways to go before they can match the OLED TVs in plenty of aspects. While the Neo QLEDs can get brighter, they still exhibit quite a bit of blooming even on the top of the range 4K model (QN90A). And all the other ones such as the QN85A and the 8K TVs still have pretty poor black levels

      I think this is how Apple does their burn-in mitigation. I think they use a kind of accumulation filter in software to subtly dim parts of the screen that aren’t as heavily used so that the whole screen “dims” evenly. I remember a story where somebody did a screen replacement on a burned-in OLED iPhone, and imagine their surprise when the burn-in suddenly appeared in reverse on the new screen.

  • @johnd7564
    @johnd7564 2 ปีที่แล้ว +129

    The simplest thing to way to check for burn-in is to load some monocolor images. 100% white, 50% gray, black. Any burn-in will be visible as changes across the screen.

    • @MarkGibbons
      @MarkGibbons 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      But thats an unrealistic scenario. I don't think this test is about how quickly he can damage the OLED, it's about whether anyone, anywhere should be worried about it while doing what the switch is intended to do, gaming.

    • @johnd7564
      @johnd7564 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      @@MarkGibbons Ahh, sorry, I didn't say that well. I was suggesting that after he tries to burn in with 1100 hours of a static image (as he did), he can then CHECK for OLED damage by loading an all-white or all-gray image. If he sees anything other than a flat white or gray screen, he knows there's damage.
      It would absolutely make sense to also look at it with other games loaded and see if it's intrusive. But "is there ANY damage?" is easier to diagnose with the test I suggested.

    • @Etsa
      @Etsa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Can't help to wonder how big of a deal it is if you have to go through all that trouble to see it though. That's like looking for scratches on your phone with a magnifying glass if you can't see it without the magnifying glass, it's not an issue.

    • @johnd7564
      @johnd7564 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@Etsa Yeah, I agree with you. It's just really hard to say "there is or there isn't damage" when you're looking at a moving, complicated screen. But in other kinds of content (say a blue sky in Ace Combat) it would be more intrusive. Thus my suggestion to definitively spot damage.
      CRTs were subject to burnout, too. I've seen such TVs where there was burnout that really intruded into other viewing experiences. How much it was bothersome depended on the content.

    I've got 3 OLED Switches and measure Samsung panels all the time on smartphones. It's very common for the white points to be every so slightly different in their balance of red, blue and green. I'd say it's just that you are seeing here and not from burn in.
    All 3 switch's white points look very similar in their target but one of them looks slightly more neutral, SLIGHTLY, while the other two have a bit more green cast. As you turn up and down the brightness the white point changes slightly, ever so slightly, as well since their are RGB balance errors through the grayscale. It gets worse as the brightness decreases. Looks terrible below 40% in shadows for example. I can't even play games on this thing at lower brightness if the game uses many darker scenes. The grayscale errors are just too great. This is also typical of Samung calibrated panels, in general, with their galaxy phones! Drives me nuts. Always has.
    Fyi iPhone also uses Samsung oled panels but the RGB balance is usually better, when I measure them, through the brightness scaling of the grayscale. Guess Apple cares to mind those errors where Samsung just doesn't??? I throw my hands up.

    • @ahmadzabeer983
      @ahmadzabeer983 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It'd be a waste to throw whole panels out just because a few parts are not up to par. I assume Apple just buys the top percentage panels of the ones Samsung manufacture, as they are supposed to be the same panels.

    It's very common to see LCD TV's that have been used as billboards in banks or shops to exhibit ghastly color anomalies from display static imagery for 12 or even 24 hours a day, people just assume the panels are simply busted because burn in is just not something we assume to be affecting LCD tech.

But because it's RGB subpixel structure, not PenTile, I thought it would look better. (Low quality display was the reason I didn't buy the 2017 Switch.)
      Due to easily visible pixel structure I give the Switch OLED display C+ grade. If it were exactly the same but 1080p would give it A-. That's quite high, but doesn't really need more than 60Hz and RGB structure is nice compared to PenTile. 1080p would mean decent 314 PPI instead of really borderline 209 PPI.

      This isn't some kind of fear-mongering being spread around by the anti-Nintendo crowd. OLED burn-in can happen on just about any OLED screen. It's nice to see Samsung's panel performing so well under this stress test, and that should be the bottom line. I wasn't too worried about burn in with my OLED Switch. I had a plasma TV for years and those things were far more prone to burn in. I would often leave it on the news channel with the little ticker on the bottom for hours on end as background noise while I worked on other stuff and in the 12 years I owned that TV, I never had any issues with burn in. The screen finally just died a normal death with zero burn in. Early OLEDS were a lot more prone to it than the current generation of panels so, I would be surprised if anyone had issues with burn in on their Switch under ordinary use. Your experiment showcases that though perfectly.

    Burn-in is an issue I had instantly and first thought of with the OLED Switch. I never wanted one, but it had occurred to me about Burn-in. I'll get a new Switch eventually, whenever they come out with an even better model than the OLED, and the second version of the Switch that had better screen and battery, etc.

    Could you try viewing the screenshots on a lower brightness to see if you can spot the burn in then? And also darker screenshots / areas in a game in general. On my old AMOLED screens the burn in was most noticeable once the screen was more dimmed, like for example from playing a dark game, or watching a night scene in a movie. At full blast or in bright scenes the burn in was almost never visible to my eyes.

    We got my 7yo an OLED switch for Christmas, as well as a wireless controller; when I first connected the controller, it was as if the left control stick were locked hard right.... I nearly pissed myself (after going through the time to set it up, download updates etc.) as we were going to play some smash together. Thankfully a reboot fixed it, chocking it up to a strange glitch with all new hardware, but man was it worrisome. it's only been a couple months, but so far the joycons are fine, our aftermarket controllers are fine, screen is fine. I can't believe how nice it looks, my first handheld was a gameboy... so you know, resolution, screen size, color... things I'm not used to seeing in a handheld (even though I've had a smart phone for the past ~16 years or so).

    10:34 There’s actually a green tint splotch issue going around. It’s because they’re using displays that Samsung doesn’t want to use or something, or they’re not calibrating them well at different brightness levels. Look it up, you’ll find pictures and videos

    on a galaxy S8 i actually found noticeable burn-in in 2 weeks.
    by default it doesn't allow you to set the navigation bar to black, but i used an external command to set it to black anyway because it most resembled the look of previous devices. (the buttons would look like they were not part of the screen)
    after about 2 weeks i noticed that the area where the notification bar had been was a lot brighter in apps that hid it, and this was most noticeable on all-white screens.
    so the most extreme burn-in test you can do is to put up a screen with mostly white and at least 1 true black element(which turns off the pixels completely), and then check it with an all-white screen.
    a smart enough oled screen could perhaps eliminate burn-in by tracking the usage of each individual sub-pixel and continuously recalibrate it, increasing the relative brightness a tiny bit the more it has been used.
    no burn-in would be visible until sub-pixels decay beyond what it can compensate for, although the screen would gradually consume more power as it gets more use.

    This seriously cool for the future of any OLED product. Maybe because it's a 720p screen and the pixels are bigger they last longer?
    I really like all the updates to the OLED switch, the kickstand, the bigger screen, the chassis improvements. None of which matters to my switch that lives docked 95% of the time. Still glad I ran to Costco at the beginning of the pandemic and picked one up.

    I think burn in is a concern for all screens. Not just OLED. In my office we have a decent mix of IPS and OLED screens that display Finder windows, notes, and gmail all day while turning them off probably like twice a week. Half the IPS screens have crazy burn in displaying a ghosted image of some Finder windows or Desktop wallpaper. The OLED screens are fine. We do have more IPS screens than OLED but still.

    I don't know if this is something anyone's pointed out but I believe non-primary consoles only have to be online to verify you can launch the game. After that as long as its an offline available game you can disconnect. I gave my lite to my dad and all hes been playing is Arceus, so all he does is connect & start the game then disconnect from the internet. Since thats all he plays so far he just puts it in sleep mode when he's done so it doesnt kick him off when im constantly switching games. I did test it while both consoles were online and it would kick one off when the other logged on as it normally does.

    My buddy used to play cod zombies so much that the UI burned into the TV. This was back in 2011. I'm sure TVs don't do that as much anymore. He'd have that UI on his screen for months at a time. 1 game of zombies would sometimes last 12-18 hours when going for high rounds.

    I went to Target a few days ago and they have an OLED and standard model side to side. They both can play the same demos and vids. I simultaneously booted a video preview for Luigi mansion. 3.
    You tube reviews can not justify how good the OLED screen looks. I want one now. Now when I play my Gen 2 switch I feel like I'm missing out on vibrate color palettes.
