A while back, I discovered Orca Slicer, a fork of Bambu Studio that could handle Bambu Lab 3D printers as well as other Marlin and Klipper machines too. Since then, it has evolved and I have adopted it as my primary slicer.
My patron Derek asked for a beginner’s guide on migrating to Orca Slicer. In this video, we cover download and installation, first run, basic slicing, security tips and other useful features. There is plenty that’s beyond the scope of this video, but hopefully enough is covered to let you hit the ground running.

The multiple plates feature is an excellent idea.
I believe that was adopted from Bambu Slicer? Though maybe it was the other way around 🤔
@@MarinusMakesStuff bambu has indeed had it for a while now
You do so much for this community - thank you! I'll be testing Orca out with a project this weekend.
This is a great video; thank you very much. I've been using Orca almost exclusively for several months, and you pointed out a few really great features and tips that I was not aware of.
Your smiling at the end is gettin better! Kudos to your coach
I ‘ve definitely subscribed. You know what you are talking about. It is very clear and detailed. Your hard work is appreciated. Keep going!
Hearing "Slick 3R" outside of my head is surreal haha. This is awesome!
Clear and concise, yet sooo full of little details! Many thanks, as I'm now a convert!
Just switched to orca for my K1. Loving it so far!
Nice overview, thank you. I'm going to try Orca out now.
I like how clear your videos always are. And you're explanation are amazing. Would you be willing to do an advanced setting video? myself I'm fairly adept in Oracle slicer But sometimes I don't even know what I don't know. And I always appreciate being able to watch it and learn something new.
This is another great video. Thank you very much! I certainly want to give Orca a try.
The multi plate feature is really neat, gonna have to check it out
I was really hoping you made a video on Orca Slicer I really like how you break everything down
Thanks, you make really clear and well explained content.
This look to have some new features prusaslicer lacks, will give it a try.
I must must say I was not convinced when I tried it first but your clip certainly brought me back to check it again...thanks👍😉
I switched from Cura to Orca and it’s worked very well! One thing that I liked more with Cura was that Z positions are defined from the bottom of a part, not the middle. I wish there was a toggle for it, since it makes placing modifier parts way easier.
This is the only thing I prefer in cura after learning orca
I was literally asking what slicer to use to accomplish this exactly with a spread of Mk4, mk3S+ and Bambu! Thanks!
I've been experimenting with OrcaSlicer a bit recently. I've been enjoying it, and there's a lot still being done to improve it. I recently helped get a default ender 3 profile added and someone else just recently helped add multi layer elephant foot compensation which I'm really happy to hear.
i tried switching from cura with my upgraded (klipper, micro swiss direct drive and dual 5015 blower fans setup) ender 3, but no chance. even at 50 mm/s my cura profile slices better and my main reason to upgrade is faster prints. could you share your profile details?
Thank you for this information. It was all I needed to start using Orca Slicer.
I bet part of the popularity is also down to your videos. I switched after your last one. Thanks for your work Michael.
I moved to Orca about a month ago and absolutely love it. I didn't mind Cura, but not having all settings in one massive laundry list on the side that I have to scroll through is nice. I also really like the device tab so I don't have to flip back and forth to a web browser to see what is going on in my Sonic Pad and two printers. Awesome video as always. I learned a few things today I had no idea Orca could even do that I should definitely be using!
I think its nice to have it all listed in the right side, so you won't forget anything before upload. It fairly quick to run them through....
Pleas more Orca Slicer Videos!!! Awesome
Outstanding video. Many useful tips that I will be coming back to.
Started out with Cura, them migrated to SuperSlicer based on your videos. I wanted to migrate to PrusaSlicer when 2.6 and tree supports launched, but was having trouble with my start and end GCode working properly. I might give Orca Slicer a try.
Very interesting indeed! Thanks, Michael!!! 😃
I'm thinking about getting a Creality K1 or the Bambu Lab P1S... We shall see which, but I think I've already chosen my slicer. 😊
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Great video. Professional as always!
Well done, thank you.
Great Introduction have yet to try it
Good info. Thanks!!
Very nice explanation! Your videos are so well made! I was to dumb to find the temperature settings here ;) great set of feautres!
I just came across Orca slicer and am using it to chase down a bear of a problem, so thank you, AGAIN lmao, for the education. Cheers from Texas.
Broke it down soooo well. Also coming from Prusaslicer wanting to check out orca features & single slicer for all printers.
Thank you for a great Video.
The new latest version is amazing!
Thanks! I plan to buy a new printer, I will definitely switch to Orca
Thanks for the video, I've been trying to start using Orca for some time, will finally give a go. I miss the right side panel of Prusa, looks more straight forward with all the infos readily available.
What I want to see in slicers is a command to straighten the model along x or y on the plate. Some people convert their models slightly rotated so that it will fit on smaller plates, butt on odd angles and it is difficult to revert the rotation.... it is useful when you want to split a model, or want to resize only in one direction.
As a work around, until this feature is implemented, wouldn't it be possible to use 'place on face' and rotate 90⁰?
It's tedious, but should work, right? 😅
perfect just what i needed
Please do a video on the Slicer settings and options for the AMS. It can´t wrap my head around how to deal with a dual AMS and how to set a specific filament to it´s position in the AMS.
One tip about the portable Zip. It's a best practice to remove any .DLL file from the original folder before copying in the new version. Depending on the version of the new .DLL files from the updated version, you could end up with conflicting .DLL files in the folder, leading to what developers call DLL hell. It may not hit you evry time you do the copy, but it's only a matter of time befor eit does, leaving you scratching your head about why things are broken.
This was a bit of a learning curve coming from cura but the features it has are great!
Really hope it will include toolchanger support in the future
im not really completely satisfied with any other slicer for my snapmaker with the dual extrusion module
Excellent video Michael! Thanks for the introduction to Orca, I've been looking around for an alternative, it is time for me to learn something new.
Thanks for this excellent guide, I’m waiting for my Xl 5 heads printer, It would be great if you could add a guide for the multi head slicer.
Thanks.
Excellent,
Please look into the Galaxy-Slicer as well
I 've been 3D printing for a around 5 years now, being in South Africa, its not TOO widely available, we dont have all the different machines etc here, and if we get them they are very pricey, so I always look for bargains.. Long story short, I got my hands on a CR6-SE around 18months ago, I managed to get it dialed in pretty good, and its printing ok. I decided to try other slicers to see if it makes a difference, and MAN o MAN I am over the moon with the quality i get now using ORCA... I recommend it to ANYONE!!
After switching from Cura to Orca my Ender3v2 started flying, and I notice acceleration is finally working. In cura I just could not find the way for it to work. I am loving Orca so far.
sadly superslicer is no longer updated so i've been using orca for the couple of months and it's a really great slicer with frequent updates
I tried it for a month but could not get on with it, Not having a global temperature setting was one missed feature, getting something sliced that would take me a few minutes in Cura took me forever with Orca, Cura is like a well worn pair of slippers for me and so I went back to Cura.
Thank you for this.
Nice video! Does it work with belt printers? On a second note, you should review the Lynx Diamond 3d printer.
Thank you... It's inspired me to look at changing, but after spending hours setting up Cura Profiles... is there a way to convert .curaprofile files so they can be imported into Orca?
According to a site I found, Curaprofiles are zipped inside the file, making the format incompatible with JSON (Orcaprints file type)
I know I'm being lazy - but I don't really feel like manually copying 6 different profiles from Cura to Orca. Any Suggestions?
Glad to hear you’re free of S3D
It would be nice if Superslicer profiles could be imported since that fork has sadly seen little development over the last year.
Seconded. I have quite some effort invested in multiple filament and print profiles/settings, and the inability to import is a major pain. Starting from scratch or manually recreating is a lot of work.
thank you the orca slicer fixed missing connection my k1 and prusa mk3s
Orca slicer is incredible, it's decreased workload getting my models to my printers. I can open my project sliced for one printer but say I want to do the same model on a completely different type of printer and flavour firmware it just takes a couple of clicks.
great video to go over the basics but you are wrong where you state orca slicer only works on single extruder printers, I'm using orca slicer for my IDEX snapmaker J1.
Just testing it. What supised me was no Ender 3 profile 😮. I has some impprovements over Prusa Slicer but not fully convinced if switching is worth it.
Great video as usual. Did you say that logging in will allow you to sync settings from one machine to another? That's not my experience today. Got it running on 2 Macs and no sign of syncing.
The only things I don't like about Orca, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong;
No option to add an additional wall every other layer, I don't know how much this actually helps with strength and getting better adhesion between walls and infill, but in my brain, it makes sense, and I miss is.
Less options for adaptive layer height than Cura.
No option to choose which printer to send a print to, if more than one printer is assigned to an IP address (I have two Ender 3 V2s running Klipper off a Raspberry pi), although this is a small gripe, as I'll usually just have Fluidd open in my browser and dragging and dropping gcode files is just about as easy.
The adaptive layer functionality is pretty similar to prusa slicer, which is far from what cura offers. But I do not use it that much, but when I need it, I just switch to Cura.
Orca Slicer is the best thing since sliced bread!
After watching i think i will give it a try
Great video...I'd like to suggest a video where you just go through and explain ALL the of options in Speed, strength and quality sections of orca. I just got the hang of most of the general settings in cura and now Im overwhelmed with how many options I am presented with in Orca....but want to understand them.
Is there any advantage to orca slicer over bambu studio if only for bambu printers? Thanks! Great video as always!!
Is it possible to import the settings/config from prusa slicer to orca?
I don't know if many are aware that .step files can be uploaded to Orca as well. I personally like how it improves your printed model's fidelity. We are no longer bound to meshed models only!
Parametric slicing let's goooo
This is awesome, I've been using SuperSlicer but it hasn't been updated in a year and i'm really missing out by not having stuff like tree support.
Same for me. It was definitely a factor in my change.
Is it possible to import Superslicer or Prusa Slicer settings (config)?
Holy crap I have so much to learn. LOL.
Thanks!
Looks good though different than the one I downloaded some time ago. It was so confusing to try and find anything that I ended up not using it. I normally use Cura except for fixing non-watertight models. I was happy with Cura until recently when somehow it got corrupted and would no longer slice with supports. I had to delete the two folders in the appdata directory which fixed the problem, but then all my custom settings and profiles were gone and I had to recreate them. I might try Orca Slicer again depending on if they have a profile for the Ender 5 S1.
I can't wait for CHEP to do this exact same video with less detail in 3 months time!
but CHEP shares his profiles, and they are very useful to me
if I have an anycubic vyper printer connected to the Sonic pad, do you recommend selecting the printer from the list or using the generic Kipper?
Hi and thanks for creating so many videos that have helped me using various slicers like Prusa slicer for my Tenlog TL-D3Pro idex printer. From what you said in this video, Orca does not currently support two print head printers or the paint on colour facility in the Prusa slicer. Are you aware of any other slicers that support two print heads and has the paint facility that Prusa has? Pruca has all the features to support my IDEX printer, but I'm always looking at other hopefully better slicers to play with.
I really like Orca Slicer, but there are two things that bother me... One is that the layer count sometimes gets all wonky.. Viewing the preview, the layer counts would count up fine up to a point (say 1200-ish or something) then the next layer would be like 900-ish and then continue counting up from there to the top of the model... Haven't been able to figure out a pattern. It still works, but the layer-count progress in the device page is all messed up because the current layer number is incorrect and the total layer (last layer) is also incorrect. The estimated time and percentage is still correct. The second thing is that it seems to generate g-code that prints some segments of overhangs in mid air, un-attached to anything. Seems like a bug.
I've got a quite heavily modified ender 3 v2 Neo with klipper and octoprint installed so i liked orca slicer especially for the "Device" tab it had... but with it i encountered retraction problems that i wasn't able to fix and had to switch back to Cura :(
yeah i dont known why my e3v2 moded only like cura :(
Are there mods available for Orca? Specifically something like "3D Print Log" for Cura.
awesome video as always! I'm using a klipper based Neptune 4 Max and am trying to work out how to pause my print at a certain height in Orca? Will I have to manually add it to the gcode, or can it be done directly from IN Orca? Any tips would be appreciated!
Great content, how about a video on Orca slicer with a sonic pad, cheers Gary Barford
Things have changed since just 4 months ago. at 9:52 there is another option "add handy models". Orca cube is under this now
Thank you for explaining the features. Ender 3 shows only 0.20mm Standard but PrusaSlicer has from 0.08mm to 0.28mm. How can I activate additional printer settings in OrcaSlicer?
This is one of the limitations where I think OrcaSlicer has regressed compared with SuperSlicer. You can of course create or modify your own, but the filaments or settings presented for your printer are only those that the maintainer thinks they would use. For me, eSun TPU is available for a lot of printers, but not for my K1. I have to add my own.
Hello Michael,
Sorry for my poor english.
Thank you for your great videos, they help me out - most of the time.
I added in Orca Slicer my "Ender 3 V3 SE" and everything works well. But I see that I can't change the build plate in the program. I like to buy an PEI plate for my printer, but how can I tell Orca Slicer that I use an different plate? At the moment the dropdown menu ist grey...
Thank you for your time and effort
kind regards
Harry
Excellent, but can I import my PrusaSlicer profiles? I would rather not have to redo all tweaks to a new slicer since I have no idea if I will like it or not, and don’t want to waste time if I decide to go back to PrusaSlicer.
Hey Micheal, i got an issue with orcaslicer, my profiles for my v0 are also linked to my v2.4 and vice versa, so i can access the v0 profiles as well as the v2.4 profiles regardless what printer i select. Goes for both filament settings and profiles. And idea how to resolve that?
Just started using Orcra, great video this helped a lot! I do have a weird issue. The build plate graphic is smaller than the grid I have laid out. I'm not sure how that happened or if its a concern.
Does OrcaSlicer have a hole size compensation setting? I think it may be Bambu Studio but it is not in PrusaSlicer. Great video, clearly I need to check it out. I am learning PrusaSlicer since I figured it would be better for use with my MK4. Thanks for the content.
I use Repetier to talk to all my printers, so my main slicer can talk to everything already.
I would love to find a slicer that does everything... WELL.
Simplify3d's new release is very very good. It just works. It is not as tunable as other slicers, but it works. It just works.
That said, what makes them so good, their slicing algorithm, is biased in that you can have models where it just won't see parts... weird, but reproducible.
Cura has some "plugins" that suit special needs. It also has a great set of calibrations and primitive stuff.
Lastly, Prusa. Their slicing algorithm is also different, and sees things very different than Simplify3d or Cura. Something invisible to S3d the other see.
SuperSlicer -was- good, even great for a while, and then Prusa and Cura had releases with new things that SS didn't... and combined with some internal struggles and...well... they are behind
All these rants are mine, just a low level,Hobbyist with no patience
I'm trialling Orca compared to Cura. So far I'm liking it! Certainly seems easier to get fast and decent results in Orca compared to Cura.
I have issues with orca after using Cura. I had all the settings the same but the estimated times are way longer in orca. I’m not sure why
I wish everyone would just stop with all these forks and just collaborate on one piece of software.
IDK why after every time i use it it messes up with my printer[Neptune 3Pro], lowers the Z offset like crazy
slow down the stepper motors
also ive noticed that the extruder doesn't left before layer change only if i activate Z hop which i hate to use
thanks for another amazing Video
Thank you so much for your very informative videos. I was wondering if you could help - I can't seem to add generic filaments to my Ender3 printers. What am I doing wrong ? I select all the filaments but only the Creality Filaments show up.
is this slicer compatible with RRF? Because in the setup you can only see klipper and marlins, that seems shorthanded.
3D print noob here. I really thought I’d give Orca slicer a shot after watching this, but can’t get it to print over wifi to my new Ender 3 V3 KE. Tried to setup Octoprint but can’t figure out how to access the ssh functions. Orca looks great, but I guess I’m stuck with Creality Print for now. That is printing great over my wifi. Maybe a video on adding plug ins and more detail on setting up wifi printing? Thanks
Great video. I have a V400 and am wondering if there are any profiles I would need from FLSun or do I just use the generic klipper / mainsail? Thanks again.
for some reason the travel speed between parts is usper slow and acceleratons/speedsettings/zhop dosent seem to affect it
do you know if it is possible for orca to be able to control a resin printer through wifi / raspberry pi 4 ?
I am using Orca and really like it, but I still don't know how to make one filament profile that can be used across all of m y printers, they only show up on one type like my Klipper corexy, but I can't use the same custom filament on my bed slingers.
I may have to convert from Idea Maker, this is quite nice.
It will be tuff first😎 just saying.... Its a shame that raise3d doesent care about their own slicer though.
Great video Mike! One question. With a sonic pad how do I connect to the printer? I tried earlier but couldn’t get it to work. I’m thinking maybe it was because I had the webpage for the pad open at the same time? Any help would be greatly appreciated 👍🏻
Thank you for great videos !
I just installed orca Slicer on Windows for a Creality CR6 MAX.
Would you have any idea why my extruder does not stop pushing filament ? It keeps forcing filament and the gear is skipping.
Also, the Flow rate tests I did on my different filaments are they good values in Orca, or do I have to do new tests ?
Thank you !
