Just listened to Jon Krakauer's essay on Mark Foo and came here to see him. From Krakauer's account he seems to have been a loving son, brother, and fiancé, as well as a good friend to his fellow surfers. I hope his loved ones have found peace.
Kelly Slater in his twenties was a force to be reckoned with.Today he is the master gladiator who comes out of any barrel unscathed.He is definitely supernaturally gifted.Blessings.
I remember seeing Mark out at Lani's one winter when it was pretty big. I remember that he charged but because of his popularity, his north shore celebrity status, and being surrounded by so many admirers, he didn’t seem to be in any hurry to grab a wave. It was somewhat of a social event coupled with a surf sesh. I used to record all of the H3O shows on video tape. I went through this tape and came across this particular show with this interview which appeared to be a classic; Mark Foo interviewing the future 11 time champ noting even then it was apparent that Kelly was going to be something very special.
He sounds like Jordan. Thinking about surfing 100% of his time. Shows what true dedication and determination looks like. We think we work hard, little do we know we have SO MUCH more capacity to work even harder. Trick is to find the “thing” we love to work on, otherwise it’s just a “grind.”
Too bad he didn't ride a longer board like that in the last Sunset Contest. He got so good at dropping into late barrels he forgot about carving big waves on a longer board....

Slater is killing it here. His style was fully developed at a young age. Respect to a man that just won the Pipe Master's at almost 50. Respect due.
