50 years surfing, and this is the best commentary of surfing I've found. And btw I had my legrope anchored to the reef at Ponta D'Ouro Mozambique in 2012. Ain't fun. Happens. "The shallows" surfing scene was at Neds Beach on Lord Howe island.
You only get good surf there occasionally. It is thick with coral and gullies, you'd get cut up and ripped up unless you were an extremely competent surfer.
But the beach is very pretty looking and makes for a nice backdrop.

I think he’s being a little bit humble because probably he’s never tried it. I am just an intermediate longboard surfer and it is an easy trip for me to do, very easy, even on pretty big waves. I had a 9 foot long board, thin, Single fan, kind of modern, hanging 10 was really easy to do. I never fell off at hanging 10. Served in the Santa Barbara region in the 1990s. Idyllic life.

Big Wednesday was written and directed by John Milius, who was an avid surfer in his day and wanted to make the most genuine surfing movie ever made up till that point. Part of his deal was he would stop production to go out and do some surfing during filming when a great set came along. So, although dated now, it makes sense that that film had a lot of effort put into the surfing.
